Here Comes Summer....
|
 |
Here comes one of my favorite three-day weekends. The pool here is crystal clear, the lawn chairs are out and the hammock looks inviting. I have no plans except for watching the local town parade on Monday, which the boys and I always call "a Mayberry moment." It's incredibly amateurish, but watching it I always get a lump in my throat at some point --- usually when the older veterans walk by. Knitting (making this cool shawl in a new pattern) and reading on the agenda....lots of both. Oh, and we have a new grill, which supposedly has a ton of features I "am going to love." I think that that was hype to get me all excited about Tom and the boys hitting the hardware store to buy this last weekend. I got an amazing sales pitch from them on why we "needed" this.
This week we have GREAT interviews with Barry Eisler (I told him the other day that after sharing his books with readers I now know the correct spelling of requiem and assassin for future Scrabble games) and Khaled Hosseini (who with this new book I now am calling by name instead of "THE KITE RUNNER author"). I loved both books, and they would be great long weekend reading.
Also, my son Greg's first Bookreporter.com interview runs this week, as he interviews f-stop Fitzgerald (yes, Fitzgerald interviews Fitzgerald) about his new book THE MIGHTY FALLEN. My sons and husband enjoy touring war memorials on vacation trips, so this book was one they all pored over. Greg has a great eye for photography and thus he welcomed the opportunity to talk to f-stop about this book, which gives readers a look at more than 150 war memorials. As we celebrate Memorial Day this weekend and think back on our fallen soldiers, we have made this our "Don't Miss" title of the week. The photography is breathtaking, and author Larry Bond writes terrific prose to accompany the photos.
We also kick off our Father's Day Duffel Bag of Books Contest today. We have SEVEN great books and what I am calling "manly prizes." It's not too early to shop for dad. And dads, may we suggest you read our list, print it, circle your faves and leave it where your family can find it? Trust that ideas for gifts always are welcome! A couple of years ago I was invited to a book party where the author greeted me in her pajamas. Marian Keyes hosted a party in her jammies for her book UNDER THE DUVET. We had lunch and great conversation while she chatted with us. This fun memory still has me smiling as I share news that her book ANYBODY OUT THERE? is our new Summer Beach Bag of Books title this week. I had great fun shopping for this one...including tucking in some Irish tea to honor Keyes's roots. See details below.
Our new One to Watch author is Holly Peterson, whose book THE MANNY will be in stores on June 19th. It's the story of a woman who hires a male nanny to care for her son who is in need of some male attention, as her husband is too busy to have time for him. What happens? Funny story: we had a male nanny one summer. He was great with the boys, and they all had a great time. The house was never clean, but the adventures were noteworthy. His last day the boys and I flew to Atlanta. Before we left, the "manny" packed the boys' backpacks. We hit a four-hour gate delay and I thought...at least we have things to do in the backpacks. Oh, I was so wrong. We had a stuffed bunny, crayons and a videotape. The boys STILL laugh about this; I guess the look of horror on my face was memorable. Since then, when I ask them to pack, they say, "Can you REALLY trust us to do this? We're guys." Okay, no mail about this being sexist. THEY said it, not me!
