Author Interview -- May 25, 2007

THE MIGHTY FALLEN: Our Nation’s Great War Memorials --- a collaboration between international photographer f-stop Fitzgerald and bestselling author and Navy veteran Larry Bond --- is a poignant and elegant tribute to some of the significant conflicts and the heroes that have contributed to America’s rich and noble history. Consisting of over 150 photographs and descriptions of memorials across North America during a 10-year period, Bond and Fitzgerald capture the essence of honor and sacrifice conveyed in these structures, which range from the newly erected World War II memorial in Washington, DC to Civil War battlefields and Revolutionary War figures.

The book presents hundreds of memorials, monuments and statues that honor over 300 years of military service and are meant to convey more than just a time and place. Intent on bringing history to a more personal level, Fitzgerald’s photographs --- along with accompanying text by Bond that describes the memorials and tells the stories behind them --- focus on the memories and emotions that the stone and bronze structures evoke, and often highlight the names and faces of the fallen soldiers who did not live to see the battle’s outcome. Some of the stirring images included are Women in the Civil War, which is a rendering of a Confederate sculpture in Raleigh, NC; a statue of Andrew Jackson from New Orleans in Fighting President; and Soldiers Remembered, of Boston’s World War II Memorial.

THE MIGHTY FALLEN is an evocative and a visually stunning collection that examines the power of memory and the ways in which people are immortalized, and commemorates all those who have dedicated their lives to serving their country.
