Happy Thanksgiving...and Shopping Small!
|
As I write this newsletter on Wednesday morning, the wind is blowing and the snow is falling. Christmas weather for Thanksgiving! We come to you a couple of days early so the staff may enjoy a much-deserved long weekend. I am very grateful for all of them.
Cory is coming home tonight for the holiday; we have not seen him since September, thus I am looking forward to this! He texted last week that he has “a new radical haircut.” The only other thing I have heard about it is that it’s “very short.” I hope I recognize him! His being home means the vibe around the house goes way up as he and his friends meander around. I am looking forward to it and hope that the weather does not mar these plans or those of any of you who are traveling for turkey. We once again have a fresh-killed turkey for Thanksgiving, which Greg picked up last weekend.
Yesterday, as Greg and I drove into the city, there were 10 busses from Western Carolina University headed into the city. On the side of them, there was a sticker that said "Macy’s Parade." I did a quick Google check last night, and it turns out this will be the band that leads the parade tomorrow! We wondered why there were 10 busses, but I learned that “The Pride of the Mountains is one of 10 marching bands performing…it's also the largest band performing with 505 members.” The student body at the school has 10,000 students. You do the math on the percentage of students who are in the band!
The holiday weekend provides a couple of good opportunities for readers to connect with authors and get signed books for the holiday. First up, on Saturday, the American Booksellers Association’s “Indies First” campaign will be part of Small Business Saturday. More than 1,200 authors will be volunteering as booksellers at more than 400 independent bookstores, handselling books to customers and making recommendations. Here is a list of who will be signing where; it’s quite an impressive group! Wouldn’t it be fun to tell your gift recipient that Kristin Hannah (pre-order your copy of THE NIGHTINGALE, coming out February 3rd), Garth Stein (A SUDDEN LIGHT) or Chris Bohjalian (CLOSE YOUR EYES, HOLD HANDS) helped you pick out their gift? By the way, I confess that I get emotional every time I watch the American Express commercial for Small Business Saturday and hear Paul Simon’s “America” swelling in the background. The Book Report Network is a small business, one of the companies that form the backbone of this country, and I relate to other small business owners who lay themselves on the line each day to find ways to sustain and grow their businesses without corporate safety nets. I encourage you to shop and support small business owners on Saturday --- and start that shopping by visiting the indie bookstore near you.
Also, we’ve learned that “100 prominent authors --- including Donna Tartt, David Mitchell, Dan Brown, E. L. James, Jeff Kinney, George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton --- each signed roughly 5,000 copies of their latest books for Barnes & Noble. The company will distribute the 500,000 signed books among its more than 650 retail stores.”
Beginning on November 29th, Penguin Random House will launch #GiveaBook, a social media campaign designed to promote books as gifts this holiday season and give back to U.S. children in need. Every time someone uses the hashtag #GiveABook on Facebook or Twitter before December 25th, Penguin Random House will donate a book to the Save the Children organization, up to 25,000 times. To learn more, check out #GiveABook on Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook. There is also a #GiveABook video challenge, encouraging people to name a book they are giving to a friend and challenge three friends to create their own videos.
Something else to note with the holidays in mind: There will be a special version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, created by Jesse Kornbluth (you know him as the co-founder of Bookreporter.com) and illustrated by Paige Peterson. I love the story behind this. Here’s how A CHRISTMAS CAROL originally came about: “In 1843, Charles Dickens was the most celebrated writer in England. But his wife was pregnant --- and he was broke. He needed a bestseller…fast. And he knew just what that might be: a holiday story. Two months before Christmas, he set to work. Six weeks later, he was done. By Christmas Eve, every copy of A CHRISTMAS CAROL had been sold. In more than 170 years, it’s never been out of print.” Jesse tried to read the book to his daughter, but she was bored. He went on to learn “that when Dickens read the story on stage and he performed it 127 times --- he didn’t read all of it.” So Jesse took on the task of cutting the 28,000 words down to 13,000 and hired an illustrator to work with him to re-cast the story for a great read-aloud for today. I have spent the last few months listening to audiobooks. During my “test drives,” I came up with a list of 20 that I think have good storylines and appealing narrators. It took me time to come up with this list as I confess there are some narrations that I just could not wrap my ears around (witty, eh?). This list includes the winners in my eyes --- audiobooks that gave me a chance to expand my reading horizons as I listened to titles that I have not had time to read in print. My commute has been a lot more fun for discovering audiobooks. Please note that with the exception of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, much of this material is toooo adult for young ears, thus listen with discretion! I currently am listening to BIRD IN HAND, an earlier novel by Christina Baker Kline, who many of you know as the author of the mega-bestselling book club favorite, ORPHAN TRAIN. This is a very different book for her, but I am thoroughly enjoying it!

Although I sadly was unable to attend this year’s Miami Book Fair International, Bookreporter.com reader Cristina Vazquez was kind enough to give us her thoughts on the event, which you can read here. Her comments made me feel like I was there, and I so wish I had been! Many thanks to Cristina for taking the time to share! Also, Miriam Kassenoff attended by herself (so she could move around freely) and shared that her favorite panel was “Is There a Monster in Your Laptop,” which addressed the issues of “losing the art of reading hardbacks and browsing in bookstores.” She moderated a panel that presented three Holocaust-themed books, and the turnout was amazing --- 75 attendees with standing room only! She is most looking forward to reading Roger Rosenblatt’s THE BOOK OF LOVE, out January 2015.
Last week, the New York City - Southern New York Chapter of the National MS Society announced the finalists for the 19th Annual Books for a Better Life Awards. The winners will be announced during an awards ceremony hosted by Meredith Vieira in New York City on March 23rd. Click here for all the nominees.
And now our television watch. “Homeland” last week was brilliant --- so much unresolved, which keeps the suspense high. I would have made a different plot twist in last week’s episode of “The Good Wife” and had Cary have his phone tape his encounter in the car --- it would have been brilliant. “The Affair” has many plot issues and editing holes, but I continue to enjoy it. I am watching ahead on a preview account, and Noah’s way back to Montauk was clever. I find that people are on the fence about it, but they keep watching. I finally figured out what is not working for me on it: It’s like each episode is written without the person before consulting the book on what a character is doing. It would make for an interesting project to break down Noah and Alison to see these issues.
This coming Sunday the 30th at 9pm ET, Fox News Channel is set to air Killing Kennedy. Based on Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard’s book of the same name, this Emmy-nominated film drew a record audience of 3.4 million viewers when it originally aired on the National Geographic Channel.
I am off to chop chop chop, which is the staccato beat of Thanksgiving prep. There will be a small gathering tomorrow with just my parents coming over, which I am happy about. As we have not seen Cory in a while, I am looking forward to just hanging out. Homemade pizza tonight!
