Heading South

I am writing this Thursday night as I jot notes of things to take with me to South Carolina tomorrow when I head to the South Carolina Book Festival in Columbia. Confession here. I hate packing to fly. The fact that everything I want for 72 hours needs to fit into one bag is true pressure. I think I have the books picked out. I am going with an advance reading copy of A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS by Khaled Hosseini, best known as the author of THE KITE RUNNER, which will be in stores on May 27th. I started this one this week and I am itching to read more. I also am bringing BECAUSE SHE CAN by Bridie Clark, an "insider tale" of the publishing industry like THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA got inside the magazine biz. It sounds like a complete romp and the kind of book I can disappear into on the plane when there is way too much moving around and I have trouble concentrating. And because I am headed south, I also have with me Cassandra King's QUEEN OF BROKEN HEARTS, which will be in stores on March 6th. Three days; three books. Got that piece right.

Now, what to bring to knit? Sleeves for the chenille sweater that I am making (for the record, sleeves look really strange when you knit them)? A new scarf? I need something I do not have to concentrate on. How much yarn? How many needles? And where is that yarn shop I want to check out in Columbia? Okay, time to find the extra foldup travel bag so I can fit everything in on the way home since there will be more books. And hey, I CAN have two bags, right? Oh, and swimming stuff. Hmmm...can I fit in the swim barbells and the drag buoy? I need the waterproof MP3 player. And clothes. Wait, it's in the 60s. Maybe I need less of them. But then it's in the 30s at night. I need double clothes. I can see that this packing experience is going to be very interesting.

I am looking forward to this weekend as it's a chance to visit with my author pals --- Charles Martin, Patti Callahan Henry, Michele Martinez, Ad Hudler and James Born. And it's also a great opportunity to get to hear some new authors like Dorothea Benton Frank, who is kicking off the event Friday night. I have heard from a few of you who are going to be there and I look forward to meeting you. I will be easy to spot. I probably will be knitting and I probably will be wearing turquoise. A few years ago Charles Martin was with me at a book fair. I said I was going to run up and change for dinner. He said, "Into another turquoise outfit?" I stammered and tried to find something pink in my room to prove him wrong. I failed.

Joanne Fluke is our newest featured Mystery Mayhem author. The author of the bestselling Hannah Swensen series, Joanne Fluke has all the ingredients at her disposal to whip up a sweet and suspenseful little culinary thriller. Her latest, KEY LIME PIE MURDER (which comes out February 27th), promises to make spines tingle and mouths water. We have 35!! copies of KEY LIME PIE MURDER to give away to readers who wish to preview and comment on the book. Interested? Be sure to send your name and mailing address to [email protected] by March 2nd.

By the way, just reading about this book has me salivating for key lime pie. I can see my family wondering where THAT came from if I whip one up.

In stores next week is SHOPAHOLIC & BABY by Sophie Kinsella. I read this one over Christmas and if you are a Kinsella fan, or in for a chick lit escape, you will enjoy this. Our Word of Mouth entrants have this as one of the prize offerings along with TEN DAYS IN THE HILLS by Jane Smiley. Are you a book concierge? Take a look at our poll and tell us if you are.

Our monthly update to our New in Paperback feature is here. We know that for many readers a book makes its way to their homes only when it's out in paperback. So for you we have pulled together a varied list of fiction and nonfiction. Note: it was a very special moment at the office ten years ago when the first books that we had reviewed in hardcover came out in paperback. We realize the same review would work with a new cover and ISBN. True joy!

Please note: The International Thriller Writers, Inc. (ITW) has announced the launch of its new bestselling thriller-author studded "Brunch & Bullets" luncheon series, debuting Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood, California. A portion of the proceeds for this event will benefit the national literacy program, Reading is Fundamental. A second luncheon is scheduled to take place on the East Coast this summer. Many of today's top thriller authors will be in attendance, including Sandra Brown, David Morrell, Gayle Lynds and John Lescroart. For details on how to get a ticket to this event, click here

By the way, college hunting was truly fun last weekend. While we heard presentations and took tours, I also was taking notes on something I think few other parents were noting: the school colors. Life at college will bring the following colors into your wardrobe: Syracuse (orange for the Orange, formerly the Orangemen), Fordham (maroon for the Rams) and NYU (purple for the  Fighting Violets). This is something to ponder along with the quality of one's education. I was trying to figure out what color I would be most happy knitting with in a year or so.

I fly back Sunday night in time to catch the end of the Oscars. I have my favorites picked out and I look forward to seeing the results.

Have a great week...

Author Talk: Norman Mailer, Author of THE CASTLE IN THE FOREST

Throughout his six-decade career, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Norman Mailer has written such legendary and sometimes controversial works as THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, THE ARMIES OF THE NIGHT, THE DEER PARK, THE EXECUTIONER'S SONG and HARLOT'S GHOST. His latest novel, THE CASTLE IN THE FOREST, explores the early life and motivations of Adolf Hitler, told from the perspective of an Assistant to the Devil. In this interview conducted by J. Michael Lennon (Mailer's archivist and Emeritus Vice President and Emeritus Professor of English at Wilkes University), Mailer explains why he chose to narrate the story through the voice of this unusual character and describes how doing so was less challenging than his previous attempts at writing omnisciently. He also sheds light on some of the symbolic aspects of the novel and discusses how his cultural background and family history prompted him to write the book.

THE CASTLE IN THE FOREST by Norman Mailer (Historical Fiction)
In his first major work of fiction in more than a decade, Norman Mailer has set out to explore the evil of Adolf Hitler. The narrator, who is later revealed to be an exceptional presence, gives us young Adolf from birth, as well as Hitler's parents, siblings, and the intimate details of his childhood and adolescence. Not only is she whipping up treats for the chamber of commerce booth at the fair; she's also judging the baking contest; acting as a magician's assistant for her business partner's husband; trying to coax Moishe, her previously rapacious feline, to end his hunger strike, and performing her own private carnival act by juggling the demands of her mother and sisters.

A New York Times best-seller, it won the prestigious Bram Stoker Award and earned numerous critical raves. SCAVENGER, Morrell's latest novel, takes us in a harrowing new direction: a desperate high-tech scavenger hunt for a 100-year-old time capsule. Frank Balenger, the resolute but damaged hero of CREEPERS, now finds himself trapped in a nightmarish game of fear and death. To save himself and the woman he loves, he must play by the rules of a god-like Game Master with an obsession for unearthing the past. But sometimes the past is buried for a reason.

SCAVENGER is a brilliant, frightening hunter-hunted tale that layers modern technology over the dusty artifacts of earlier times. The result is a surreal palimpsest, one that contains the secret of survival for Balenger and a handful of unwilling players who race against the game's clock to solve the puzzle of the time capsule, only to discover that time is the true scavenger. Morrell's trademark action sequences are embedded with fascinating historical clues that make SCAVENGER a thrill-a-minute page-turner as well as a mesmerizing literary experience.

More about THE MERCY SELLER:
In the fifteenth century, with religious intolerance spreading like wildfire across Europe, English-born Anna Bookman and her grandfather, Finn, earn a living in Prague by illuminating precious books, including forbidden translations of the Bible. Finn subscribes to the heresy that people ought to be able to read the Word of God for themselves, without having to pay a priest for the privilege, but holding that belief is becoming more and more hazardous. When the authorities start burning books and slaughtering heretics --- including the man Anna was to marry --- Finn urges her to seek sanctuary in England, but her passage abroad will be anything but easy.

In London, Friar Gabriel dutifully obeys church doctrine by granting pardons . . . for a small fee. But then he is sent undercover on a spying mission to France, where Anna has set up a temporary stall as a bookseller. Anna has no way of knowing that the wealthy young merchant frequenting her stall is actually a priest --- just as Gabriel does not know he has met the woman who will cause him to doubt his vows.

As Anna continues her journey to England, where the movement to stamp out heresy is growing ever fiercer, Brenda Rickman Vantrease brings us a richly imagined and immensely rewarding novel of love, faith, and dangerous secrets.
