Here Comes My Favorite Weekend of the Year!
PLEASE NOTE: We were unable to send this newsletter yesterday as a tech issue took the site offline. We apologize for the inconvenience!
Ah, the weekend when the clocks change is my absolute favorite of the year. I mull umpteen ways to spend the extra time. Yes, it will be dark earlier in the evening, but I usually still am at my desk at 5:00 when the sun goes down (actually often until 7:00), so that does not really matter. In fact, seeing that it is dark reminds me that any of the outside tasks that I might have planned to do, but did not get to, can wait another day.
This is also Halloween weekend. Factoid for you: The next time that Halloween will fall on a Saturday is 2037. That is the same year that Memorial Day will be early, and Labor Day will be late, so we will have a long summer like we did this year.
I am reading WHALE HARBOR by Mary Beth Keane, which definitely will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection. I am talking to Mary Beth on Monday, so look for that interview next week. I am listening to the audio, which is terrific, as well as reading the print version. I also have been listening to IN THE GLOAMING by Alice Elliott Dark, which is fabulous. I had seen the film adaptation that came out in 1997.
As we turn the page to November, I am making a small stack of year-end titles to read --- and interviews are being set up. We are so close to thinking “next year.”
Our latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Robert Kolker, whose new book, THE VANISHING FAMILY, chronicles a nine-sibling unnamed family affected by an inherited form of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). This Bets On pick explores profound questions about identity, caregiving, genetic testing, and whether or not people would choose to know their fate if a hereditary disease runs in their family.
FTD is frequently misdiagnosed for years as depression, schizophrenia or addiction, delaying proper care and support. Approximately 40% of these cases are inherited; the remaining 60% are sporadic. The disease typically manifests between the ages of 40 and 60. It is systematically underdiagnosed due to its behavioral (rather than memory-based) presentation. The condition's invisibility in public health frameworks means that many affected individuals, including those who are homeless, may go unidentified.
Robert shares how he worked with each family member to listen to their story as he was researching and writing. Click here to watch the interview or here to listen to the podcast.
On Wednesday evening, Kathryn Stockett joined us for October’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event to discuss her #1 New York Times bestseller, THE CALAMITY CLUB, a Bets On selection that released in May and still is on the NYT list. Eleven enthusiastic readers appeared on camera to ask Kathryn questions about the novel.
We touched on many different aspects of the book in the hour that Kathryn gave us, including what inspired her to tell this story about a group of unbreakable women fighting for what’s rightfully theirs, the historical research she conducted as she wrote about the South, and the characters she was drawn to the most. She also explained why it took 17 years for her second novel to be published, following the enormous success of THE HELP.
Click here to watch the event or here to listen to the podcast.
Our final “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event of the year will be held on Thursday, November 12th at 8pm ET. Our guest will be Sally Hepworth, and she will discuss her most recent novel, MAD MABEL, an instant New York Times bestseller and a Bets On title.
After I talk to Sally, we will give readers the chance to share a question for her on screen. We have special sign-in directions for these attendees, and they will get to chat with Sally in our “backstage green room” before the program starts. Then we will turn to questions that have been dropped into Zoom’s Q&A feature. Click here to register for the event.
If you would like to ask Sally a question, please fill out this form by November 12th at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city, state, email address and phone number, as well as your question. And indicate if you would like to be on camera or off.
We will be hosting our 15 ½ Annual Book Group Speed Dating event on Wednesday, November 18th at 1pm ET. If you are a bookseller, librarian or book group leader, and would be interested in attending this event, please email me using the subject line “Speed Dating.” Tell me a bit about yourself and what you do with book groups.
This is a “trade only” event, but we plan to share the publisher videos, PowerPoint slides and other materials in the November 20th newsletter. Invites to those who attended the last program went out on Thursday.
Retired LAPD detective Harry Bosch delves into the darkest chapter of his past in Michael Connelly’s new thriller, THE HOLLOW.
When Bosch was 11 years old, his mother was murdered, and he became a ward of the state. Decades later, his half-brother, defense attorney Mickey Haller, informs him that he is entitled to $400,000, but Bosch doesn’t want the money. He wants justice. Forced to face a history that scarred him, Bosch must bring down a sadistic criminal and finally put to rest the demons of his past.
Ray Palen has our review and says, “This may be one of the finest books that Connelly has ever written, which is incredibly high praise considering he is one of the best writers on the planet…. There is so much to love about THE HOLLOW, and I can go on for days singing its praises. Whether you are a longtime fan of this series or a newcomer, do not miss it.”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:

-
OFF THE RESERVATION: A ragtag group of activists sets out to repatriate the bones of a Blackfeet boy taken to the infamous Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Stephen Graham Jones’ return to the Blackfeet reservation of THE ONLY GOOD INDIANS and THE BUFFALO HUNTER HUNTER.

THE QUEEN OF ROSES: Spanning the ballrooms of Pasadena, the sunlit gardens of Altadena, and six decades, this new novel from Julia Kelly --- the international bestselling author of THE LIGHT OVER LONDON --- connects the stories of two women striving to overcome societal pressures and build their own lives.

Reader Mail:
We got some lovely notes about our “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event with Kathryn Stockett.
I had shared some historical information during the program that Claire from Signal Mountain, TN had sent me about her maternal grandmother's adoption in Georgia.
Claire wrote, “Wow!!! We were moved to tears when you shared my email and the three letters about my grandmother's 1899 adoption from a Georgia orphanage on THE CALAMITY CLUB book discussion/Zoom tonight! I had invited my husband to listen in, too, and we were so delighted and appreciative to hear and see our story online. There are so many more readers who may have this same history but do not have the letters. I videotaped the segment and sent it to my adult daughter in VA who said her friends had just talked about the book tonight. And I plan to share the video with my book club tomorrow night! You made my day!!!”
Lois wrote, “Last night's webinar was so wonderful. Thank you so very much for working so hard to provide us with such an inspiring program. Please send me, if possible, the information you shared at the conclusion pertaining to future programs and book discussions. I was totally impressed with Kathryn and her commitment to writing. It was wonderful. Thank you for all of your work in coordinating and presenting. Looking forward to hearing from you.”
Mary wrote, “It was a great interview, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks so much for your response.”
Another person named Mary wrote, “Tonight’s program was really outstanding. Thank you so much. LOVED the book.”
Sandy wrote, “I listened to the program on Wednesday night. It was great.”
Joline wrote about winning a recent Word of Mouth contest: “Thank you so much! I was surprised and excited to hear that I had won copies of AMERICAN HAGWON and THE VANISHING FAMILY, both of which are high on my list of books I wanted to read. I had just finished reading a book on the day I received my copy of AMERICAN HAGWON. So, of course, I dove right into it and am absolutely loving it! Thanks again for your wonderful newsletter and Word of Mouth contests as I always look forward to your wonderful content and entering the contests.”
“The One About Matthew Perry” on Netflix: This three-part documentary about Matthew Perry is very interesting. But talking to a friend today, I think his memoir, FRIENDS, LOVERS, AND THE BIG TERRIBLE THING, was even more compelling.
You Can See Everything in theaters: Three people reached out to me about this film this week, all of whom gave it raves. It's a documentary that “follows Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the former health company known as Theranos, in the weeks leading up to her prison sentence following her guilty conviction for defrauding investors.”
“Pride and Prejudice” on Netflix: Here's the trailer for the six-part limited series, which is coming on December 3rd.
We live on a street where the driveways are long, and the houses are far apart, so we get few little revelers here. Those who come are encouraged to take multiple pieces of candy. We try to make it worth their walk!
There are two children in the neighborhood who are getting books, along with candy. One is getting HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM THE VERY BUSY SPIDER by Eric Carle. Last year, when we gave her HALLOWEEN BUGS by David A. Carter, she promptly sat on the porch and started turning the pages. The other child, a boy, is getting THE GOODNIGHT TRAIN HALLOWEEN by June Sobel. One is already a big brother, and the other is going to be a big sister soon. When his new baby sister gets a hand-knit blanket, he is getting Sobel's THE GOODNIGHT TRAIN BABY ON BOARD.
I love weaving books into people's lives whenever I can!
Read on, and have a great week...and an extra hour!

THE HOLLOW: A Bosch Novel by Michael Connelly (Thriller)
Audiobook available, read by Titus Welliver and Cameron Monaghan
When Harry Bosch was 11 years old, his mother was murdered. He became a ward of the state, housed in MacLaren Children’s Center, a notorious facility where abuse was rampant. Decades after its closure, a lawsuit has resulted in a massive settlement for former residents. But when Bosch’s half-brother, defense attorney Mickey Haller, brings him word that he is entitled to part of it, Bosch says he doesn’t want the money. He wants justice. The news awakens Bosch’s memories of a place he had hoped never to revisit, and of a boy nicknamed Chops, a fellow ward who wound up dead. Bosch is certain that Chops was killed in a hidden space under the stairs --- the kids knew it as “the hollow” --- and his murder covered up. Now he is determined to reopen the investigation and learn the truth. Reviewed by Ray Palen.

Nathan Yellow Tail, one of the survivors of the revenge murders, finds himself in the hospital after a terrible accident that should’ve killed him and that nearly killed his best friend, Sebby. Nate’s life is out of balance, so when he is given the chance to reset his life, and maybe save Sebby in the process, he steps up again. This time it’s into a camper van that is almost as run down as his broken body, filled with three older Blackfeet, to find the bones of the lone Blackfeet boy who died at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School --- where many Indigenous children were abused --- and repatriate this boy home. Featured Review: FICTIONAL SELVES by Kyle MacLachlan
FICTIONAL SELVES: A Memoir by Kyle MacLachlan (Memoir)
Audiobook available, read by Kyle MacLachlan
Kyle MacLachlan’s funny, moving and playfully self-aware memoir charts a career that could belong to no other. Plucked from obscurity to star in David Lynch’s Dune, the Hollywood blockbuster that never was, MacLachlan rebounded with a startling performance in Lynch’s provocative masterpiece, Blue Velvet, which would mark him as a master of the unusual and ultimately lead to his career-defining role as Agent Dale Cooper on the TV sensation “Twin Peaks.” FICTIONAL SELVES is a book of doppelgängers, with MacLachlan mirrored by his own prodding ego (“Other Kyle”), the iconic characters he inhabited, and the ones that eluded his grasp but gave him a profound and surprising lens onto himself as a person and a performer. Just before midnight, a car swerves to avoid something --- or someone --- mysteriously standing in the road, only to slam into a fallen tree instead. In the pitch black, four more cars follow in a pileup no one can seem to avoid. Stumbling out of the wreckage, five strangers find themselves in a backwoods dive bar, waiting for daybreak and hoping for cell service. But as tensions rise and a storm rages on outside, the occupants of the dive bar start to notice that not everything is as it seems. Time is moving differently, and they quickly learn that going outside --- whether to assist another accident victim or to hike for help --- is a very bad idea. There’s something in the woods, something that isn't natural. Could the figure in the road have been a warning? Or something more sinister? Reviewed by Rebecca Munro.

DOPPELGÄNGER by Sam Riviere (Fiction/Dark Humor)
At Northwick Author Development Academy, an elite incubator for the creative class, originality is both fetish and mandate. Its candidates arrive ravenous for distinction --- only to discover, after a year of carefully engineered “disorientation,” that their work has converged into something eerily uniform. When a student in the sophomore cohort, Carl Sample, announces his intention to provoke a stranger into punching him --- an act pitched as both personal exorcism and artistic experiment --- the action seems grotesque, comic and vaguely prophetic. Before Carl can enact his plan, another student is assaulted in town. This emerging crisis of coincidence binds the cohort in a tightening web of surveillance and mythmaking, as intention and event fall fatally out of sync. Reviewed by Sarah Rachel Egelman.
