Celebrating a Book Launch in Style
I had so much fun last night at Kristin Hannah’s event celebrating Tuesday’s release of her new historical novel, THE WOMEN, an upcoming Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that documents in stunning detail the largely unknown contributions of women in the Vietnam War. Joining me at Symphony Space in New York City were Tom and Lisa from our team, along with my friends Annmarie and Beverley.
The discussion was moderated by Elisabeth Egan, a writer and editor at the New York Times Book Review and the author of A WINDOW OPENS. Excerpts from the book were read by Miriam Silverman, who you may recognize from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fleishman Is in Trouble.” I read this book months ago, and hearing Miriam brought back details that I had forgotten. It also reminded me how Kristin’s prose sets both the tone and the emotion that her characters are experiencing. After the discussion, some very excited (and a few visibly nervous) audience members asked Kristin questions about THE WOMEN and her writing process.
Kristin is always so engaging, and I loved seeing her interact with her passionate readers and genuinely show how appreciative she is of their support. There is so much enthusiasm for this book, and it showed in a BIG way last night! Above you can see Kristin in conversation with Elisabeth, as well as me with Kristin right before the event started. (I am laughing as I had this crazy asymmetrical vest that was layered over my jacket, and it was half-on and half-off.) She walked into the lobby to say hi to me, and people who were waiting there said, “There she is,” in hushed tones as cameras went off. I loved this as her author rock star moment! The last photo above shows Kristin leaning into a question from the audience. I share this one as I loved how even her body language showed the respect she has for her readers. As the event wrapped up, the audience moved to the edge of the stage and Kristin happily chatted with them before she was whisked backstage.
We are excited to share our rave review of THE WOMEN this week from Eileen Zimmerman Nicol, who has this to say: “Grab your tissues. THE WOMEN moved me to tears on several occasions. Although I was young, I remember the times that Kristin Hannah describes, and the way she weaves history, politics and cultural changes into Frankie’s life skillfully evokes the tumult of that period. Frankie and her friends and lovers are well-drawn characters, and the novel’s pace will keep you reading.”
Don’t miss my Bets On commentary in next week’s newsletter, including something I noted when I thought about the book later.
And now...your chance to see Kristin virtually.
Back in October, we did our first-ever LIVE “Bookreporter Talks To” interview. Our guest was William Kent Krueger, and we talked about his latest novel, THE RIVER WE REMEMBER.
We were so thrilled with the turnout and the feedback we received that we’ll be doing another live interview, this time with Kristin. She will be answering questions from those who won a copy of THE WOMEN in a contest we ran last November. We plan to have some of these contest winners ask their question on camera, and I’ll be asking questions on behalf of those who are camera-shy.
The event will take place on Wednesday, March 6th at 7pm ET. If you would like to attend, you can sign up by clicking here. We are looking forward to what promises to be another fun and informative evening!
Word of Mouth Reminder
THE WOMEN is one of the prizes in our Word of Mouth contest; the other is THE YEAR OF THE LOCUST by Terry Hayes, which we plan to review next week. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read, and you’ll have a chance to win both these titles. Please do so by Friday, February 16th at noon ET.
Hank Phillippi Ryan’s new psychological thriller, ONE WRONG WORD, is now in stores and will be a Bets On selection. The book, which is our current New Release Spotlight title, explores the insidious nature of gossip, scandal and lies --- and how careers, friendships and even marriages can be shattered forever.
According to our reviewer Pamela Kramer, “Hank Phillippi Ryan is a master at throwing curve balls that completely change our field of vision. We thought she was leading us in one direction, but as it turns out, she was providing clues that take us not only on a different path but to a different state entirely.... The final twist is truly unexpected, and we ultimately are appreciative of the engrossing tale and the nail-biting ending.” Find out why I’m betting you’ll love this book just as much as Pamela did in next week’s newsletter.
I was happy to catch Hank on “Tamron Hall” on Tuesday. Along with talking about ONE WRONG WORD, she reflected on the start of her career and becoming a novelist in her late 50s. Click here to watch the segment. We will be touching on these and many more topics when I talk to Hank next Friday for a “Bookreporter Talks To” interview. We plan to share the video and podcast of our conversation in the February 23rd newsletter.
Winter Reading Update
We are giving away five copies of ONE WRONG WORD in a Winter Reading contest that will be going up on Tuesday, February 13th at noon ET. Normally these are 24-hour giveaways, but as a special Valentine’s Day treat, we are extending the deadline to Wednesday, February 14th at 11:59pm ET. That gives you 12 extra hours to submit your entries!
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
A LOVE SONG FOR RICKI WILDE: In this enchanting love story from Tia Williams, the New York Times bestselling author of SEVEN DAYS IN JUNE (a 2021 Reese's Book Club pick), a free-spirited florist and an enigmatic musician are irreversibly linked through the history, art and magic of Harlem.
-
THE TEACHER: Freida McFadden’s latest novel is a darkly funny and unsettling back-to-school thriller about a hot potato student, a wife who wants more, twisting secrets and long-awaited revenge. Fun fact: Freida writes under a pseudonym. Until the end of 2023 when she left her practice, she was a doctor who moonlighted as a writer. Ah, what her patients did not know about her!
-
THE PRICE YOU PAY: Peter Ash must follow his closest friend, Lewis, into the criminal underworld when secrets from the past threaten everything they hold dear in Nick Petrie’s eighth thriller featuring the Iraq war veteran.
-
FOURTEEN DAYS: Set in a Lower East Side tenement in the early days of the COVID-19 lockdowns, this collaborative novel from the Authors Guild has an unusual twist. Each character in this diverse, eccentric cast of New York neighbors has been secretly written by a different, major literary voice --- from Margaret Atwood and Douglas Preston (the book’s general editors) to Tommy Orange and John Grisham.

News & Pop Culture
Reader Mail:
Elizabeth wrote, “I won DIVA by Daisy Goodwin and FAMILY FAMILY by Laurie Frankel in a Word of Mouth contest. Oh wow, thank you! I appreciate all you do.”
Another Word of Mouth winner, Nora, wrote, “I was so pleased and excited to receive two books in the mail recently! One was ABSOLUTION by Alice McDermott. I have not read anything about the Vietnam War, so I am very interested to find out more. The other is LET US DESCEND by Jesmyn Ward. I have not read any of her books, but just peeking in makes me want to sit and read all day. She has a great gift to pull one in and stay.”
Gretchen commiserated about my issues signing on to Amazon Prime Video shows: “I have had the same problem the last two weekends. I agree that it must be overtaxed. I didn't understand why I couldn't get a show that had been advertised as being available. At least now I know that it's not our equipment. I watched the first episode of 'Expats' but did not really like it. Nicole Kidman's acting seemed off to me. I'll go back and watch another episode or two.” I confess that I found a few parts of the third episode to be very disturbing.
Ron wrote, “I love your amaryllis!”
Karen also wrote about the flowers, noting, “You can plant those amaryllis bulbs after they finish blooming --- and it warms up outside! Just peel that wax off and plop them in the ground in a morning sun spot. They get huge in the ground.” I have to try this out!
Betsy wrote this about a February 29th birthday: “A friend in my Women's Group is throwing a coming-of-age birthday party for her husband that day, since it's the 18th February 29th since his birth! Clever, no?” I do agree it's very, very clever.
For Those Enjoying “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”: You may want to check out this piece on “CBS Sunday Morning” that ran last week about Capote’s Black and White Ball.
“A Gentleman in Moscow” on Paramount+ with Showtime and Paramount+: This highly anticipated series based on the 2016 novel by Amor Towles will premiere on Friday, March 29th. You can see a first-look short trailer here.
“Criminal Record” on Apple TV+: This series looks interesting. I am going to check it out.
These flowers continue to enchant me. I definitely do not need flowers for Valentine’s Day!
Our Editorial Director Tom Donadio’s birthday is Tuesday. If you want to drop him a note to wish him a happy day, his email is [email protected].
Super Bowl weekend is ahead! Aside from the game, let’s see about the halftime show and the commercials.
Read on, and have a great week.
