Happy Halloween

Anyone with children may be shaking their heads like me at how Halloween as a holiday has grown since we were kids. We had a costume and a pillowcase for trick or treating and at the house there was a cut pumpkin with a candle. This pumpkin was carved with a knife. Really elaborately decorated homes had cornstalks! Now there are these over-the-top displays with spider webs, large size lawn ornaments, orange lights and store-bought bags for hauling the loot --- and complete pumpkin carving kits.

Somehow the holiday crept up on me this year and we have none of our Halloween paraphernalia out of the attic, so I feel like the Grinch of Halloween. I can see I better get a move on lest I disappoint the kids who show up at our door expecting our usual "over the top" excitement. My younger son is going out as Jack Bauer from "24". My mission for this weekend is to make a tape of Kiefer Sutherland saying, "My name is Jack Bauer and this is the longest day of my life," that Cory can play when people ask who he is. I also need to make him a mask. Okay, there's half a day accounted for! For those of you who have a little ghost or goblin that may enjoy a book, we have a terrific roundup of Halloween Books for kids on Kidsreads.com.

Speaking of books for kids, Alexander McCall Smith has written a series of books for children. So for those of you who are fans who want to share his books with the younger set, look no further than our feature below!

Our lineup this week continues the theme of last week of bringing you more of the titles that are racing into bookstores these fall months. It is the biggest fall that we have seen in years, and there are books that are certain to get you out browsing and buying. We have excerpts of some of the titles to give you a chance to do some reading ahead at home before you leave for the store. Our lineup this week also has some advance reader feedback about SMALL ACTS OF SEX AND ELECTRICITY by Lise Haines.

We have been enjoying reading the poll results about how you shelve your books. It's always fun to see what others do. I finally put all my yarn into one cabinet last week and I now feel like I should attend a Knitters Anonymous meeting and say, "I am Carol and I am addicted to yarn." You know a hobby is out of control when you need to buy furniture to house it. I found myself perusing a catalog this week for a cabinet for organizing it better after I spent an hour online reading message boards for what other people do.

As I mentioned I will be attending the Miami Book Fair on November 16-19. As always, there is a stellar lineup of authors. I was slipped the schedule for the author panels this week, which should be live shortly, and once again I am trying to figure HOW I am going to see everyone who I want to catch either reading or talking. If you are planning to be there, please let me know and perhaps we can meet up. Among the authors who I am excited about seeing are Sara Gruen (WATER FOR ELEPHANTS), Nora Ephron (I FEEL BAD ABOUT MY NECK), Charles J. Shields (MOCKINGBIRD), Paul Levine (KILL ALL THE LAWYERS), Brad Meltzer (THE BOOK OF FATE), Sy Montgomery (THE GOOD GOOD PIG) and Lisa Unger (BEAUTIFUL LIES).

The clocks change this weekend. We gain the hour that we lost back in April. I have 24 things planned for this hour, as usual. #1 would be to read a book in bed while knitting. Yes, that will be a way to multi-task the hour and make it into three! Or wait, I can haul the Halloween stuff out of the attic. Have a great week and enjoy your extra hour no matter how you spend it.

Featured Historical Fiction Author: Jeff Shaara, Author of THE RISING TIDE

We are so excited to be launching a NEW Feature --- Historical Fiction --- and Jeff Shaara is the perfect inaugural author. A modern master of the historical novel, Shaara has painted brilliant depictions of the Civil War, the Revolutionary War and World War I. Now he embarks upon his most ambitious epic, a trilogy about the military conflict that defined the twentieth century that begins with THE RISING TIDE, which comes out November 7th.

More about THE RISING TIDE:
THE RISING TIDE begins a staggering work of fiction bound to be a new generation's most poignant chronicle of World War II. With you-are-there immediacy, painstaking historical detail, and all-inclusive points of view, Shaara portrays the momentous and increasingly dramatic events that pulled America into the vortex of this monumental conflict.

More than an unprecedented and intimate portrait of those who waged this astonishing global war, THE RISING TIDE is a vivid gallery of characters both immortal and unknown: the as-yet obscure administrator Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose tireless efficiency helped win the war; his subordinates, clashing in both style and personality, from George Patton and Mark Clark to Omar Bradley and Bernard Montgomery. In the desolate hills and deserts, the Allies confront Erwin Rommel, the battlefield genius known as "the Desert Fox," a wounded beast who hands the Americans their first humiliating defeat in the European theater of the war. From tank driver to paratrooper to the men who gave the commands, Shaara's stirring portrayals bring the heroic and the tragic to life in brilliant detail.
