An Interview with Caragh M. O’Brien, Author of the Birthmarked Trilogy

Posted by tom

Caragh M. O’Brien is the author of the young adult dystopian novel BIRTHMARKED and its sequels, PRIZED and PROMISED. She lives with her family in Connecticut and recently resigned from teaching high school English in order to write. In this interview, Caragh discusses her basic audiobook listening preferences and why the ever-popular Jim Dale is her favorite narrator.

Question: What does a great narrator add to an audiobook?

CMO: The right narrator brings his or her own personality to the story, infusing it with energy, sensitivity, emotion and humor. So much is conveyed through delivery and timing that the narrator’s voice becomes inextricably tied to the story, the way a friend’s voice belongs to a friend.

Q: What types of books do you like to listen to on audio?

CMO: Novels.

Q: What do you do while you listen?

CMO: I listen to audiobooks with my family on road trips.

Q: Do you have a favorite narrator? Tell us what makes his/her work so enjoyable for you.

CMO: Jim Dale, who narrated the Harry Potter books, is my favorite narrator. His voice is so crisp and expressive. I’m in another world when I’m listening to the Potter novels.
