Books on Screen

Each month, our Books on Screen feature spotlights movies, television shows, miniseries and specials that are based on books of various genres --- including novels, memoirs, comics, children's books, short stories and poetry --- along with the latest DVD releases.

March 2013

Coming off the heels of the Oscars, we present to you the book-to-screen adaptations that will be making their way to a theater (or a living room) near you in March. Check out former Oscar host James Franco, who plays the Wizard of Oz as he first arrives at the Land of Oz in Oz: The Great and Powerful. In Admission, Tina Fey acts out your greatest college admission fears. Meanwhile, "Game of Thrones" returns for a third season on March 31st. And it's a big month for Stephenie Meyer fans, as the long-awaited adaptation of THE HOST comes to the big screen at the end of the month, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 is now out on DVD.

February 2013

It’s February, and love is in the air! Whether you are looking for a night out and a quirky romance like Warm Bodies, a chick flick to watch with friends like Safe Haven, or television shows like "Monday Mornings" and  “Parade’s End” to curl up with and enjoy while having some “me” time, there is an exciting book adaptation on a movie or TV screen near you.

January 2013

It's cold outside, and what better time to snuggle up with a book? Or, perhaps, a movie based on a book. As we all know, January is an exciting time in Tinseltown --- the Golden Globe Awards are given out and Oscar nominations are announced. Lots of book adaptations have been recognized by the Academy this year, including big screen versions of Yann Martel's LIFE OF PI, Doris Kearns Goodwin's TEAM OF RIVALS, Victor Hugo's LES MISERABLES, and Matthew Quick’s SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK. But this month also brings a new crop of film and TV releases with print origins. Among them are Gangster Squad, “The Carrie Diaries,” John Dies at the End, and Parker, based on a character made famous by Donald E. Westlake when he wrote as “Richard Stark.”

December 2012

Winter is almost here, and the holidays are right around the corner. So when you’re not running around doing some last-minute shopping, take a breather and check out the films, TV shows and DVD releases headed to the big and small screens this December.

November 2012

Winter is almost here, and while television shows are well under way, there are some highly anticipated movies about to hit the big screen this month. From historical to romantic, there’s something this month for everyone (though you might need to try to pry yourself from your warm bed first).

October 2012

This month on the big screen is all about the action movies (with a little bit of singing thrown in). So while you’re trying to escape the colder days, or preparing for the swarm of children on Halloween this year, make sure you squeeze in some time for these books on screen adaptations.

September 2012

The official end of summer is nearing, and these early days of fall will be perfect for some futuristic crime-fighting and a dash of family drama. While you’re wishing for those warmer days to stay a little bit longer, be sure you check out these releases on both the big and small screens.

August 2012

This year, a number of big movies are releasing for people of all ages during these "dog days of summer."

Among these standout releases is The Bourne Legacy, which stars Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, whose life was affected by the events in the first three installments of this blockbuster series. Watch as he figures out how to handle the same situation Jason Bourne was thrust into.

July 2012

Summer is well underway, and that means big summer blockbusters are battling it out for that top spot at the box office. When you aren't enjoying the Great Outdoors, be sure to check out July's books on screen adaptations, which are sure to entertain (or at least get you out of the hot sun for a few hours).

June 2012

The official start to summer is almost here. And you know what that means --- a whole three months of summer blockbusters! June already brings some great, long-awaited titles to the big screen. If the weather just gets too hot to handle, have no fear; there are plenty of cinematic adventures awaiting you (hopefully in an air-conditioned theater).
