Today's Featured Book and Contest: CROSSING THE HORIZON by Laurie Notaro
Before Amelia Earhart was even on the radar, aviatrixes in London, Florida, Paris, Germany and New York were gearing up to follow in the footsteps of Charles Lindbergh and his record-breaking flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Several were pilots to begin with, and had already broken barriers for women in the field.

Inspired by true events and real people, this novel follows three women all bitten by the flying bug in 1927: Elsie Mackay, daughter of an Earl and one of the richest woman in England, the first female to get her pilot's license in Britain; Mabel Boll, a glamorous society darling (and former cigar girl) with two dead husbands and a massive bank account, ardent to make the historic flight; and Ruth Elder, a 23-year-old beauty pageant contestant who used her winnings for flying lessons and became the preeminent American girl of the sky.

Each determined to be the first woman to pilot across the Atlantic, Elsie, Ruth and Mabel were daily names on the front page of the largest newspapers in the world. After years of thorough research, author Laurie Notaro shares their stories through striking photos and stunning prose as they collide, struggle and literally crash to chase the fame and place in history each one desperately desires to win.
