You Will Pay

Lisa Jackson's YOU WILL PAY is told in an interesting architectural way, using "Then" and "Now" instead of traditional chapter headings. Although she numbers the chapters, she puts the place, time and characters' names on the page. The story is very tense, with the characters starting out as counselors at a camp for kids. That was "Then." "Now" a skull has been found in the sand near the campsite, and while the police know who the skull belongs to, they have not yet made that information public.

During the summer highlighted in the story, two girls went missing and a serial killer escaped from a local prison. For 20 years, no one knows the real story of what happened "Then." Finding the skull opens all of the memories and old wounds that developed that fateful summer.

"Lisa Jackson is one of those writers who twists the plot and puts the characters in fascinatingly dangerous situations. YOU WILL PAY is a perfect example of her talent."

Among the main characters is Lucas Dalton, the stepson of the camp's owner, a preacher and one of the meanest men in the story. Lucas is a hunk, and the girls fall all over him. He even has an affair with his stepmother. In the "Now," he is a senior detective in the sheriff's department. He is not the only one to play a part in the "Now," as the other counselors and some of the campers are drawn into the current mystery. Since no one knows what happened to the missing girls "Then" or "Now," gossip spreads like wildfire again.

One of the campers, Kinley Marsh, is now a reporter for the online newspaper NewzZone. She goes to interview Jayla, a former counselor at Camp Horseshoe. Kinley was always curious and asked a lot of questions. Jayla is appalled by the nerve of Kinley tracking her down after 20 years. Kinley tells Jayla about the bones found near the camp and says, "... the conjecture is that it will be Eleanor [Elle] Brady or Monica O'Neal. I do know that it is a female."

Now “seven former female counselors are coming back to the small Oregon town --- among them, Bernadette Alsace, the woman Lucas has never forgotten. Each one knows something about that terrible night." They took an oath never to tell. "And as they reunite, a new horror unfolds. First come texts containing a personal memento and a simple, terrifying message: YOU WILL PAY. Then, the murders begin.”

Lisa Jackson is one of those writers who twists the plot and puts the characters in fascinatingly dangerous situations. YOU WILL PAY is a perfect example of her talent. Readers won't be able to put the book down and will find themselves on a rollercoaster of suspense. This is a perfect summer read, but remember to keep the lights on.
