White Lies

White Lies

A
naked moonlight swim under a "brilliant desert moon" on a humid
Arizona night with sexy Jake Salter is a reckless and excitingly
brazen step for Clare Lancaster. No regrets or second thoughts
spoil the sensual experience that captures the souls of Jake and
Clare. Passions soar, and our hero and heroine quickly become
lovers. There is no denying the "dazzling energy of passion"
between them. Passion hotter than the Arizona desert is what keeps
the reader turning the pages of WHITE LIES.

Jake has "a rule against sleeping with anyone involved in a case.
So what? Rules were made to be broken." He isn't afraid to pursue
his hunger for the woman who stirs his blood, readily admitting, "I
knew it would be like this…knew it the first time I saw
you."

Jake and Clare belong to the Arcane Society, whose goal is to
identify and study individuals with paranormal talents. Jake's
special power is that he is a "hunter," while Clare is an "exotic."
Clare "had a preternatural ability to sense the unique kind of
psychic energy generated by someone who was attempting to
prevaricate or deceive." She can sense the "energy of a lie." Jake
"can see like cats and owls in the dark" and feels energy that is
"Raw. Elemental. Dark. It's like touching the heart of a
tornado."

When Clare meets Jake, he affects her senses like no other man
before him. Clare's powers as a human lie detector give her even
more reason to go after Jake. She knows that when Jake tells her he
wants her, he isn't lying. It isn't her psychic powers that cause
her to go after Jake; it's her pure feminine instinct and the
reverse role of "huntress" pursuing a "hunter" that makes Clare
stay in Phoenix, despite the fact that she has found two dead
bodies and is still a suspect in the murders.

Clare's half-sister, Elizabeth Glazebrook, was being drugged by her
husband, Brad McAllister. Clare is able to detect the truth of
Elizabeth's volatile situation due to her psychic powers and helps
Elizabeth free herself before Brad destroys her in an effort to get
closer to the Glazebrook fortune. When Brad and his mother, Valerie
Shipley, both turn up dead, Clare is a suspect because she found
both bodies. Clare's father, Archer Glazebrook, is a wealthy and
nice man trying to do right by a one-night stand that produced
Clare. The killer is someone within the Arcane Society who gets
caught up in a secret subset society, the cabal, and a crazy
reinvention of an ancient alchemical formula that is a
para-enhancer. "Running hot" on the formula is a ticket to
incredible power.

Admittedly, this is a bit far-fetched, but WHITE LIES is
fiction. Amidst some bizarre events, murder attempts on lovers and
attacks via psychic mind blast, Jake and Clare pursue a pulsating
relationship that is also recognized by Arcanematch.com as a
perfect match. The undeniable strength of the instantaneous
chemistry between Jake and Clare ignites fierce needs that make
them open up their senses to "fully savor the moment."

You don't have to be a fan of paranormal plots to enjoy WHITE LIES,
Krentz's second Arcane Society novel (following SECOND SIGHT,
written under her pseudonym, Amanda Quick). There are ample steamy
romantic scenes and enough well-written suspense-laden occurrences
to keep the reader turning the pages. The undeniable strength of
the book is Krentz's characters and her craft for writing
believable and hot-blooded romance. In a Krentz novel, the hunter
always gets his prey. In WHITE LIES, the huntress gets the hunter
--- a strong message to women that if you want a man, then go after
him with a passion.
