Shadows in Death

One evening, in May 2031, veteran New York City Police and Security Department Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke, are called to the scene of a murder in Washington Square Park. Watching from the sidelines, Roarke scans the crowd and spots an old nemesis from Ireland who gives him the middle finger. He immediately knows that mayhem is brewing.

Cobbe considers himself a wronged man and the hero in his own sad story. His deep-seated hatred for Roarke goes all the way back to their childhood days. Cobbe’s claim that he is Roarke’s half-brother has never been acknowledged to this day, and Roarke knows it isn’t true. But Cobbe believes that he is the rightful heir to the family name and has caused Roarke more than his fair share of pain. So why is he in New York City, and what exactly is he up to?

"The story highlights the themes of loyalty, love and devotion that are central to the series in a way that makes this book one of the best."

Eve and her assistant, Delia Peabody, pay a visit to the victim’s husband. When he shows no noticeable shock, sense of loss or even a moment of grief, Eve is immediately suspicious. Looking to get a rise out of him, she comments on a painting on the wall by an artist who was his wife’s illicit lover. This is the only time that the bereaved spouse reacts, which tells Eve that her instinct is dead on. As she sets out to prove her suspicions, the trail leads her straight to Cobbe.

The NYCPSD has its work cut out for them. Cobbe’s rap sheet is long, and he has been a known assassin-for-hire for years. Eve also is aware that he is on a personal mission to rid the world of her husband. Cobbe will make mistakes as this is a personal vendetta; he is impulsive and won’t take time to research a plan of action. Roarke is asked to consult with the team and help them anticipate Cobbe’s next moves.

As the search narrows, the chase leads them to Ireland. Roarke and Cobbe find themselves back where it all began, but now Roarke’s family is in danger.

SHADOWS IN DEATH, the 51st installment in J. D. The story highlights the themes of loyalty, love and devotion that are central to the series in a way that makes this book one of the best.
