Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship

John Chatterton is a world-famous diver. Growing up privileged on Long Island, he was obsessed with the ocean. He spent years as a combat medic in Vietnam and came home with a distinctive case of PTSD, which was not recognized at that time. He got over his health issues by taking up diving and became a shipwreck explorer. He had several television shows, including “Deep Sea Detectives” on the History Channel, where he investigated the wreckage left behind by famous ships like the Andrea Doria and Lusitania. In PIRATE HUNTERS, Chatterton takes you on a tour with partner John Mattera as they search for the Golden Fleece, the vessel belonging to the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister.

"Robert Kurson of SHADOW DIVERS fame is a fine writer who builds the tension of the adventure gradually.... [PIRATE HUNTERS] will fulfill all your needs for an intriguing summer getaway --- without having to go anywhere but your couch."

Bannister was a big deal in the 17th century, a man more destructive than other famous pirates such as Blackbeard. However, its discovery and identification would make it only the second one in history that would be found in its entirety like this. And so the chase is on. PIRATE HUNTERS takes readers through the whole process, from beginning to end.

With cutting-edge technology on their side, as well as a determination to use everything at their disposal to make sure they could find the ship, the explorers take on the world --- facing down rivals, overcoming legal barriers, thinking and acting like pirates themselves. Robert Kurson of SHADOW DIVERS fame is a fine writer who builds the tension of the adventure gradually. Every piece of the plan gives readers cause to worry, wondering if the next step of the story is going to be fulfilled in a positive way or if there is another nefarious situation at hand that will come and take them down.

Even the paperwork is interesting; the amounts of bureaucracy and research that have to be waded through and accomplished make this like a fun-loving thesis project. PIRATE HUNTERS makes all the legwork compelling --- no small feat because it threatens the momentum of the adventure. Fortunately, Kurson knows just the right way to weave the story lines together to make for the most remarkable trajectory.

When you look for a summer beach read or a summer retreat into an air-conditioned movie theater, you want something engaging that will take you away from everyday life. PIRATE HUNTERS does just that. It will fulfill all your needs for an intriguing summer getaway --- without having to go anywhere but your couch.
