Reading MINOR DRAMAS & OTHER CATASTROPHES by Kathleen West was a perfect way to escape from staying home and to remember days gone by when children actually went to school and we could see each other in person. In this book, we meet several people --- each of whom is imperfect in some way --- and we grow to, if not like them, at least understand and sympathize with them.

About the Book

Perfect for fans of WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE and SMALL ADMISSIONS, a wry and cleverly observed debut novel about the privileged bubble that is Liston Heights High --- the micro-managing parents, the overworked teachers, and the students caught in the middle --- and the fallout for each of them when the bubble finally bursts.

When a devoted teacher comes under pressure for her progressive curriculum and a helicopter mom goes viral on social media, two women at odds with each other find themselves in similar predicaments, having to battle back from certain social ruin.

Readers of a certain age who are familiar with Mickey Spillane’s creation of hard-boiled detective Mike Hammer may not immediately think of him as being associated with the western genre. As co-author Max Allan Collins notes in the introduction to his latest release, Spillane created a western character for a screenplay intended for John Wayne. Following Spillane’s death, Collins brought that individual to literary life in THE LEGEND OF CALEB YORK. Read More

When Sheriff Caleb York's deputy is shot down in cold blood, York has no doubt the bullets were meant for him. It's the first nasty step in a plan rustled up by Luke "Burn 'Em" Burnham --- eliminate the law, corral a team to rob a bank in booming Las Vegas, New Mexico, then lay low. Then they get wind of one little hitch: not only is York still alive, but he's gunning for justice --- and revenge. As the winter weather bears down, a chilling cat-and-mouse begins. York isn't about to let Burnham and his gang of miscreants get away. It'd be a cold day in hell if he did.

Laird Barron is very well known in horror and dark fantasy circles. Over the course of two decades, he has received multiple accolades for his shorter fiction and collections. In the past few years, Barron has turned his hand to what are known as full-length works (though, if a short story tells the full story, isn’t that full-length, too? Just asking). Barron has been slowly constructing an ongoing story arc involving a private investigator named Isaiah Coleridge. Read More

Ex-majordomo and bodyguard to an industrial tycoon-cum-U.S. senator, Badja Adeyemi is in hiding and shortly on his way to either a jail cell or a grave, depending on who finds him first. In his final days as a free man, he hires Isaiah Coleridge to tie up a loose end: the suspicious death of his nephew four years earlier. At the time police declared it an accident, and Adeyemi isn't sure it wasn't, but one final look may bring his sister peace. So it is that Coleridge and his investigative partner, Lionel Robard, find themselves in a tiny town in New York State that is home to outsized secrets and an unnerving cabal of locals who are protecting them. At the epicenter of it all is the site of a stalled supercollider project, an immense subterranean construction that may have an even deeper, more insidious purpose.

Hollywood Park: A Memoir by Mikel Jollett

June 2020

HOLLYWOOD PARK by Mikel Jollett is a brilliant memoir, with a unique storytelling structure that enhances the read.

As a young child, Mikel lived in what started as a commune in California that later devolved into a cult called the Church of Synanon. I confess to being riveted to the behavior that happens in a group like this, but I knew little about Synanon as I started reading.
