Hello, Summer

May 2020

HELLO, SUMMER by Mary Kay Andrews is a juicy summer read with a mystery woven between the pages. In it, Conley is a young reporter set to leave her Atlanta job to head to Washington, D.C., to work at a hot investigative reporting website when suddenly the company there folds. Without a job or an apartment, she is forced to head back to her small hometown in Florida and work for the local paper that her family owns.

Conley finds herself caught up in the story of a congressman’s death on a country road. She happens upon his car accident as she is coming home at the wee hours with an old family friend. Something does not feel right about the scene there, and she starts to explore why. It ends up that the congressman had a lot of secrets, and she is determined to pull together the truth behind them.

The book is a commentary on newspapers and journalism today, and how rapidly it has changed. What do these changes mean to a small-town paper? What is that paper’s role? Mary Kay Andrews worked for the Atlanta Journal Constitution for 14 years, and this ode to journalism today compared to the past is authentic. Layer in the cast of characters in the town, as well as the writer of the newspaper’s “Hello, Summer” column, and you have a lively story. And, yes, it also has a blossoming romance. Good beach reading!
