Hellbent: An Orphan X Novel

February 2018

HELLBENT by Gregg Hurwitz is my favorite of his three books in the Orphan X series. For those who do not know the series, its hero, Evan Smoak, was raised to be part of the Orphan Program, one of a group of children taken from a group home at the age of 12. He was trained as an assassin. One day he ditched the program and reinvented himself as the Nowhere Man.

Evan helps people in need via a referral program. Once he helps one person, they are then told that they should pay it forward by referring someone in need to him.

This time the voice on the other end of the call is not a stranger, but rather a man who Evan truly loves: Jack Johns, who trained him for the Orphan Program. He has a job for Evan --- to find and save a recent Orphan recruit, a young girl who is whip smart and skilled at life on the run. At the same time, other orphans are out to find both of them.

HELLBENT has a lot of the heart and soul that I loved in the first book, which I missed in the second installment. Here we see another side of Evan as this young female recruit, who is tough as nails, works her way into his world. It also has some incredible action scenes, as well as some tech action that will make your head spin. And there are a lot of scenes set in his amazing apartment.

Just bravo.

And okay, I have a huge crush on Evan.

While this is a series, each book is written tightly enough --- with enough backstory --- that it can stand alone.
