Young Emily Vole has not had an easy time of things. Found abandoned in a train station as a baby, she was adopted by the shallow and cruel Daisy and Ronald Dashwood. After their triplets Peach, Petal and Plum are  born, Emily is reduced to domestic servitude. It is not until Emily meets her next door neighbors --- Miss String and her giant talking cat Fidget --- that her life begins to change for the better, albeit for the stranger as well. The pair help her with her chores and teach her to read and write (in a few languages), and generally bring some much needed joy and companionship to her life.

One day while sharing tea and cakes with Miss String and Fidget and looking at some interesting objects from their attic, Emily picks up a set of carved golden keys. When she touches them, the keys come to life, running around on tiny legs laced into tiny boots. The keys, it turns out, had been waiting for a new Keeper to awaken them! Emily learns the keys can unlock a hidden cache of fairy wings inside a magical shop.

Magical and interesting and just the right amount of creepy, OPERATION BUNNY is a delight to read and is the beginning of what will surely be a successful chapter book series.

The fairies hid their wings to protect themselves from the evil Harpella, but now that the keys are awake, Harpella is on the hunt again and means to not only rid the world of fairies, but to stop Emily from helping them survive. Harpella visits the Dashwood home, forever changing Peach, Petal and Plum. Far worse, though, is her murder of Emily’s beloved Miss String. Soon Emily and Fidget are on the run from Harpella, hoping to help the fairies and avoid more damage and destruction.

With the help of a wingless fairy detective, a keen human detective and a train conductor-turned-rabbit, Emily and Fidget find their way to the magical shop Wings & Co. and hope to thwart Harpella’s terrible plans.

OPERATION BUNNY is sweetly silly, quite odd and has a thread of darkness running through it. Harpella is a powerful villain intent on death and destruction but the smart and resilient Emily is a heroine up the challenge of stopping her. David Roberts’ black and white illustrations are quirky and strange, perfectly complimenting the story.  Magical and interesting and just the right amount of creepy, OPERATION BUNNY is a delight to read and is the beginning of what will surely be a successful chapter book series.
