Small town kid Trey Newton doesn’t just like ghosts --- he hunts them. Or at least he’s trying to when he’s not dealing with homework, the annoying Vicki Winters or watching his most favorite TV show, “Spirit Trackers,” which is hosted by local celebrity Rex Rangler. If Trey could be anyone when he grows up, it would be Rex, the coolest paranormal investigator this side of the Ghostbusters --- he’s also a paleontologist, by the way. Dinosaurs and ghosts! What a combination!
But at the start of LOST IN GHOSTVILLE, Trey has bigger problems to deal with than seeking out spirits. For one, his dad is out of a job, and not many places are hiring. The businesses in Trey’s town are closing left and right with no sign of improving. Two, he just got banned from attending the class field trip to Rex Rangler’s new dinosaur museum, the Dino Barn, and all because he was hunting ghosts in the girls’ bathroom. And finally --- and much more sadly --- Trey is still devastated over the passing of his grandmother, who got him interested in hunting ghosts in the first place.
"LOST IN GHOSTVILLE is a fun and only slightly spooky romp about friendship, dealing with grief and the importance of family."
Clever kid that he is, however, Trey finds a way to attend the field trip anyway. He hitches a ride with his mom (although he does have let that obnoxious Vicki Winters share the trip with him) and promises his teacher not to make trouble at the Dino Barn. After getting dropped off, though, it becomes clear to Trey that he’s not at the Dino Barn at all. His mom dropped him and Vicki off at the wrong place. A scary place.
Trey convinces himself that the building is the Dino Barn, despite Vicki pointing out that it’s run down and actually doesn’t have a Dino Barn sign on it. Inside they meet some particularly odd characters, one of whom claims to be the town’s founder, Wethermerry Lewis. It’s not long before the two realize that the people in this building aren’t people at all. They’re ghosts! Thankfully, they’re friendly ghosts and mean no harm to Trey and Vicki.
Not all is well in the ghost world, though, as the spirit of Wethermerry Lewis informs Trey and Vicki that someone is kidnapping all the town’s ghosts --- including Trey’s grandmother! So the three join forces, along with Trey’s friend, Hardy, to find out who’s behind the madness, and what exactly lurks inside the soon-to-open Ghostville museum.
LOST IN GHOSTVILLE is a fun and only slightly spooky romp about friendship, dealing with grief and the importance of family. If a reader is worried that they might get nightmares from Trey’s adventures, know that the ghosts in this book aren’t the type to jump out and say, “Boo!” They each have interesting stories to tell and certainly know how to have a good time. Author John Bladek also includes a helpful glossary in the back of the book for the more challenging ghost hunting terms. There’s also a hint that this won’t be the last adventure Trey, Vicki, and Hardy have hunting ghosts. So stay tuned, and don’t be scared!
