Alan Knightley is a renowned private investigator who has solved some of Britain's most challenging criminal cases. When he fell into a coma four years ago with no signs of recovering, his son Darkus learned his trade by reading and memorizing all of his old case files So when Alan finally wakes up, Darkus is ready to tackle the new case, whether his father likes it or not.

And what a case it is: ordinary citizens with no previous criminal record and no obvious links to each other suddenly start robbing banks all over the country. The only potential connection between them is a new, bestselling book called THE CODE, a New Age self-help book written by a mysterious recluse named Ambrose Chambers. But surely a book could not affect normal people so profoundly --- it wouldn't be logical.

A smart, sophisticated middle-grade mystery.

Alan Knightley believes the answer lies with the Combination, an ancient and nefarious criminal organization he considers responsible for nearly every unexplained crime. Somehow, the Combination has harnessed THE CODE to achieve its evil ends --- and only he can stop them. But Alan does not have access to his old case files, and he has a tendency to fall back into his coma at inopportune moments, leaving Darkus and his stepsister, Tilly, to crack the Combination on their own.  But can Darkus's wits and Tilly's street smarts overcome the seemingly occult forces rallying around them?

KNIGHTLEY & SON resembles classic Sherlock Holmes in Darkus's careful attention to details and logic, and its memorable, lively characters fill out the sometimes hazy plot. The book's style is never condescending, which will appeal to older readers as well as younger readers. This smart, sophisticated mystery novel for middle-grade readers is the start of a delightful series about a delightful father-son detective partnership.

The detective Alan Knightley just woke up after a four-year coma. While he was out, his son Darkus read of all his old cases, and he's learned a lot about detective work. Good thing too --- because they find themselves caught up in a conspiracy. Because Alan is still recovering, he tends to fall asleep at the worst possible moments, meaning that young Darkus might just have to solve this mystery by himself.

About the Book

The once highly in-demand detective Alan Knightley has just woken up after an unexplained incident kept him asleep for four years. While he was out cold, his son, Darkus, took it upon himself to read of all his dad's old cases, and he's learned a lot about the art of detection. It's a good thing too --- because suddenly the duo find themselves caught up in a crazy conspiracy that involves a group of villainous masterminds (who keep appearing and then vanishing), some high-speed car chases (that will have everyone fastening their seat belts), and a national, bestselling book with the power to make people do terrible, terrible things. But because Alan is still suffering the effects of his coma, he tends to, well, fall asleep at the worst possible moments, meaning that young Darkus might just have to solve this mystery...by himself.
