Gabriel
I Was a Teenage Death God by M. J. Beasi

3
I started to really not like any of the central characters in this book. Sam was pushed aside, with not a whole lot of personality or agency. And Charlie and Ravi… obviously they were going to have angst and tension between them, but the way it was written made them so irritating. Ravi’s anger at Charlie pushing him away was fine before he knew about Charlie’s powers, but when it increased after learning about them, it was hard to like him or want him to get into a relationship with Charlie. He kept acting like he was completely the victim and ignoring Charlie’s fears. Charlie didn’t make himself look all that good in those moments either.

Appointment With Death by Agatha Christie

4
Hercule Poirot is vacationing in Jerusalem and overhears siblings talking about killing their nasty stepmother, Mrs. Boynton, a former prison warden. When she is later found dead, Poirot is called in to investigate. He questions the siblings, as well as others who accompanied the group to Petra. As he hears their stories, and their belief as to who is responsible, he identifies the real killer. Short mystery. I can truly never figure these out!

Jane
The Unraveling of Julia by Lisa Scottoline

3
After the murder of Julia's husband, Mike, who was trying to defend her from getting her purse stolen while they were walking home one night, her life felt over, of course. She's a big believer of horoscopes and reads them daily, many of them in fact. She was catching up on her email and she found the one for the day Mike was murdered. Then she receives a piece of mail from an estate lawyer in Italy telling her Emilia Rossi left her a vineyard, a villa, and 40 acres of land in Italy. She doesn't know anyone in Italy. She was adopted and who knows if it was someone in her biological family.

Life: A Love Story by Elizabeth Berg

5
Another lovely, beautifully written book by Elizabeth Berg, this one is part epistolary novel, part biography, and part third person narrative. The letter writer is a 92-year-old woman recounting her life as she looks over her belongings and remembers why she saved certain things. It’s by Berg, so it’s storytelling at its finest. In some ways it reminds me of THE CORRESPONDENT but with a much more likable character.

Second in a series set in my home state. Intriguing.

Maryann

I loved this book.

Jayme
Summer of a Thousand Pies by Maragret Dilloway

4
This was a great YA book about a 12-year-old girl whose father ends up in jail, and she must go live with an aunt she has never met who owns a pie shop. Though the pies are key, it really is about adjusting and accepting and reaching out. I was really impressed with the depth of this book.

Pam
Lady Tremaine by Rachell Hochhauser

5
A dramatic retelling of Cinderella.

Aida
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

3
Very detailed.

Susan
Whistler by Ann Patchett

4
As with most Ann Patchett’s book, this was a gentle, enjoyable read. She kept my interest by slowly revealing the relationship between Daphne and her former stepfather, Eddie. Even though it did not have a twisty plot or a murder to solve, I found myself reading for long periods to see how the story would end.

Betty Jo
The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett

4
Very readable story set in Oxford, Mississippi during the Great Depression.

Karen
The Missed Connection by Tia Williams

4
What I love about Williams’s writing is her propensity for creating electric chemistry, sharp banter and messy, yet relatable characters. Even with a few frustrating miscommunications, some repetition, and an ending that felt a bit rushed, it was still a joy to spend time between these pages.

Rene
Good Joy, Bad Joy by Mikki Brammer

5
What a wonderful book of friendship, mother-daughter relations, and navigating a lifetime of decisions. Highly recommend!!

Kathleen
It's Not Her by Mary Kubica

5
This was such a compelling mystery - couldn't put it down.

Simonne
Tom Lake by Ann Pachett

2
Whiny, immature daughters of a former summer stock actress demand to know her past with a now prominent movie star. The look-back story wouldn’t be so bad if the three adult daughters weren’t so aggravating. Nice love story between the protagonist and her husband.

Denise
Strangers by Belle Burden

3
This book is beautifully written and the story is heartbreaking, but it felt like it was a stretch to take this from a beautiful article to a full book.

Simonne
The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett

5
This funny, sad, compelling novel certainly lives up to and beyond its hype and hope. Too busy and interesting to describe. The characters are great and true. A look at what the Great Depression caused to so many people.

Rosa
The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett

5
This is a story about strong, smart females who overcome their circumstances with grit and courage and sisterhood. Set in Mississippi in 1933, there are two main characters: Birdie is the sister of beautiful Frances, who is married to wealthy Rory. Meanwhile, there is 11-year-old Meg, a young girl who has been abandoned by her mother and now lives in an orphanage. The story is compelling and the writing is so smart and so funny at times. I rooted for these characters and I couldn't put this book down, couldn't wait to see how it all ended, but I was sad when I finished the book because I didn't want it to end. Bravo, Kathryn Stockett!

Francisca
When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago

4
Santiago is an American writer who burst on the literary scene with this memoir of her childhood growing up in Puerto Rico. Her writing is vivid and expressive. She details the joys of living close to nature with a loving family, and the strife of poverty and her parents’ arguing, and of her responsibility as the oldest in a family of four, then five, and ultimately eleven children. There are some scenes that are quite distressing, including sexual abuse and domestic upheaval, but on the whole this is a very uplifting and inspiring memoir.

Sheree
John of John by Douglas Stuart

4
I can’t say the book was a page-turner. It got better toward the end, but I just couldn’t get into the characters. None were likable.

Jean
Taft by Ann Patchett

3
Teen brother and sister befriend the manager of a bar where the sister works. They are grieving the loss of their father. The brother copes badly, getting bad grades and selling drugs. The sister develops a crush on the much older manager. No one has the life they want, with the teens falsely blaming everything on their dad's absence. The device of going back and forth in time (which I never like) is used. I liked the characters less as I got to know them.

Linda
The Queens of Crime by Marie Benedict

5
This unique story blends historical fiction and mystery with legendary female mystery writers of the day solving a mystery. Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Emma Orczy, Margery Allingham, and Ngaio Marsh are friends and investigate the murder of a young English nurse. Do not miss this suspenseful, clever, and fun read.

Sandy
Silver Alert by Lee Smith

3
Parts were good and parts were not. I did enjoy most of it. I would give it 3-1/2 stars.

Elizabeth
Canticle by Janet Rich Edwards

4
I listened to this book. The narrative was quite compelling and had a mystical, poetic quality. It tells the story of Aleys, a young woman in 13th century Bruges who has religious visions. When a rich wool merchant wants to marry her, she escapes and seeks refuge from the Franciscans, male monks who don't know what to do with this young woman who does not want to enter a nunnery but wants to preach as the Franciscans do. They tell her to convert women to her cause and send her to live with the Beguines, a community of independent women who are viewed with suspicion by the townsfolk. I found this historical fiction fascinating as I had never heard of the Beguines or knew much about the medieval women of this time period.

Nancy
My Friends by Fredrik Backman

5
A little confusing.

Cindi
My Husband’s Wife by Alice Feeney

4
What a lot of twists and turns there were in this thriller. I still not sure I know who all the characters really were. I like books that flash back and then return to the present which was achieved very well. The atmosphere of the town and the house were very effective. The ending was very satisfying. I would like to read more of her books.

Vicki Fought
Daughters by Corinne Demas

4
Having daughters of my own I can definitely relate to the main characters.

Lynda
Boleyn Traitor by Philippa Gregory

4
I'm especially fascinated by Gregory's historical novels about the Tudors. Her latest book is about Jane Boleyn, Anne's sister-in-law. Jane was a maid-in-waiting to five of King Henry VIII's wives. The court during Henry's reign was full of intrigue and treachery. Most anyone in his circle connived to win favor with an especially cruel, immoral king. It's a cautionary tale that tyranny is not a good thing.

Susan
Whistler by Ann Patchett

5
Daphene Fuller runs into her stepfather in a museum and it brings back her childhood memories. Why did he suddenly disappear from her life suddenly? The book explains it in such a way that the reader has to finish it to find the answer.

Joan
The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride by Joe Siple

5
Such a charming book. So glad I read it. Might read it again in a year or two.

MH
Daughters of the Sun and Moon by Lisa See

4
This book covers a little-known period of history in California, during the building of the railroad, when women were brought in from China to serve in brothels for the Chinese workers. Although some women were brought in as wives, they were basically slaves and had few, if any, rights. Rivalry between the Chinese tongs who ran these districts escalated into a war during which innocent people were executed by vigilante justice.

Jeanne
It Girl by Allison Pataki

4
IT GIRL by Allison Pataki was an interesting and entertaining historical fiction book set at the beginning of the twentieth century that tells the story of Evelyn Talbot, a young girl who becomes a famous studio model and advances to the Broadway stage as powerful, wealthy men promise her the moon, the sun and stars for her affection. This was hard for me to follow and a bit slow-paced as I read about all the artists Evelyn posed for and the various forms of art she was portrayed. The ending was a total surprise and great.

ROSE
Revenge Prey by John Sandford

3
Lucas is assigned to provide security to a Russian family defecting from Russia while they await entry into the Witness Protection Program. The husband was known for torturing and executing spies and for giving up the names of Russian spies in the Pentagon. The Russians want revenge. Russian assassins lying in wait kill the wife, while the husband evaded the bullet. Many exchanges of gunfire erupt throughout the book as Lucas and his team chase the Russian assassins. Lucas realizes intelligence is being leaked. Once he identifies the leak and learns the truth, a CIA agent develops a plan. Another exciting adventure featuring Lucas Davenport, although not my favorite.

Is This a Cry for Help? by Emily Austin

3
Darcy is a librarian who has recently returned to work following a mental health crisis. She is reminiscing about her former boyfriend, Ben, who she dated for several years before realizing she wasn't in love with him. Now married to Joy, she learns of Ben's death, and wonders if the end of their relationship caused it. She sees a therapist and voices her feelings. Additionally, a patron at the library is angry about the policy allowing access to all materials. Darcy tries to diffuse this anger and they host community meetings. Joy and Darcy discuss their feelings and their needs. This felt like a therapy session to me.

The Bookbinder's Secret by A. D. Bell

5
I love a book within a book! Lilian Delaney is an apprentice bookbinder in 1901 when her employer sends her to pick up a commission from a collector. While there, she is given a book that had been saved from a fire. Curious about the book, she finds part of a hidden story of young lovers in its binding. When she tries to research the story further, someone who will do anything to keep her from discovering the truth endangers her life and the life of her father and loved ones. I really enjoyed the story of the young lovers as well as Lily's sleuthing. Terrific debut.

The Burning Side by Sarah Damoff

5
Have a box of tissues nearby - especially as you approach the final chapters. This is a deeply moving story of love, commitment, and finding your way through life's darkest moments. Whether it's Leo and April losing their home, their marriage, and ultimately finding their way back to each other's hearts, or Billy and Deb facing the heartbreaking realities of Alzheimer's and dementia, each journey is a powerful testament to enduring love. Through sickness and health, through trials and tribulations, this book beautifully reminds us that love is resilient.

Carol
Midnight Burning by Paul Levine

4
Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin team up in this historical thriller fighting a plot to assassinate Hollywood stars. An entertaining and sometimes humorous time!!

Jayme
Theo of Golden by Allen Levi

3
I know I am in the minority with my rating of this book, but a 3-star read doesn’t mean I didn’t like the book - I just didn’t love it. There is a lot to like. The premise of the book, Theo’s secret and the gifting of the portraits kept me reading, but I was wondering midway when and where this book would end. I think it is about 75 pages too long. Good editing would have helped with the meandering feel of the book. There is a lot of telling in the book instead of showing. I think this book has merit, and as a self-published debut it is good. I am glad that it seems the author is now with a publishing house. His next book could be amazing.

Leslie
The Help by Kathryn Stockett

4
A classic for sure. I had seen the movie recently and wanted to read the book. The writing is impeccable, infused with humor, which was pleasantly surprising! The character development was wonderful.

Kim
Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cusimano

4
Finlay is mistaken for a contract killer, and what ensues is a funny caper and series of mistrials as she tries get in and out of trials. A really fast and fun summer read! I was thrilled to learn there was a series at the end of the book. Can’t wait to see what kind of trouble Finlay gets into next!

Luella
The Dark Mirror by Samantha Shannon

4
Not having read the previous books, it took a minute. The story was emotionally charged and fast-paced.

Donna
Children of the Wild by Kevin Powers

3
As someone who thrives on historical fiction, I really anticipated enjoying this WWI saga, CHILDREN OF THE WILD by Kevin Powers, more. Don’t get me wrong, it is a beautifully-written book bringing both the peaceful Virginia ridge and the bloody French battlefields to life. However, with there being three main characters, Ennis, Roy and Samantha, I would have liked to have seen Samantha’s character a bit more developed. Also, some of Ennis’s actions towards the end were very questionable to me.

Lesley
Buckeye by Patrick Ryan

4
The best way to describe this novel would be a little slice of Americana. Major themes include the effects of the numerous wars, generational trauma and family. It is more lighthearted than not, and some of the characters are very endearing!

Pam
Culpability by Bruce Holsinger

5
Outstanding family drama about the implications of AI. Lots for book clubs to discuss in this one!

Pam
Blue Heaven by C. J. Box

4
Riveting and propulsive thriller about two children who witness a killing and are on the run before the killers can find them.

Pam
The Trouble Up North by Travis Mulhauser

5
Immersive family drama set in Northern Michigan. I adored this resilient, flawed family as they dealt with changing times.

Pam

4
Engrossing story about the world of beekeeping and the friendship of wonderfully diverse characters! Love the found family theme!!

Pam
The Summer War by Naomi Novik

4
A war between two kingdoms, a terrible curse, love, family, and loyalty are the underpinnings of this beautiful fairy tale written by the incomparable Naomi Novik.

Pam
A Far- Flung Life by M. L. Stedman

5
What a gorgeously told family saga. Complex, authentic characters, the beautiful Australian setting, and broad, universal themes bring a depth and meaning rarely found in novels. The tragedies this family faces make it a difficult book, but there is redemption, hope, and light at the end of the story.

Dortha
After Anna by Lisa Scottoline

5
It was a very interesting read told from two POVs. It alternates back and forth between the POVs telling the story and revealing the ultimate twist.

Michele
The Lowe Job by Grace Alexander

3
Very reality family oriented - not for anyone who might object to sexual subject matter.

Betty Jo
The Girl from Greenwich Street by Lauren Willing

4
Perfect for America 250. Founding fathers Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton, and Brockholst Livingston defend the builder and architect Levi Weeks in the first transcribed murder trial in American history. This book is the community summer read in Natchez, Mississippi. Weeks built the 1812 historic home in Natchez named Auburn.

Diane
The Bookbinder's Secret by A. D. Bell

3
I always love a good historical fiction, especially when I can learn something. But sadly this was one book that most of the book club did not care for. It seemed a lot of the story was not as believable as it should have been.

ROSE
Finding Grace by Loretta Rothschild

5
Wow, this book was so different! Honor and Tom are parents to Chloe, but Honor desperately wants another child. When Honor can't carry another child, or produce eggs, they turn to an egg donor and a surrogate. Honor and Tom's marriage is on edge because she is so consumed with having a second child, and has picked the perfect egg donor. Then the unthinkable happens, and Tom must make a decision that will upend his family's life. Tom finds out some very personal and confidential information, and given an opportunity to come clean, he doesn't. But, he falls in love, and now it will be harder to admit what he did. The story was told in Honor's voice, and it was fascinating to hear her thoughts of what was happening and what she set in motion.

The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett

I was intimidated to read such a long book, but I was absolutely enthralled by this story. The characters are so delicious and fleshed out, the plot is meticulously researched, and this humongous book flew by. I absolutely loved it!

Kin by Tayari Jones

5
After finishing THE CALAMITY CLUB, and rejecting it as a book club pick due to its length, I picked up KIN and once again found myself loving the characters, the theme, the depth of the story and its brilliance as a book club pick. It has shot to the head of my list for next year's picks.

The Burning Side by Sarah Damoff

5
When her husband, Leo, tells her he wants a divorce, April is so shocked that she leaves a burner on and later they wake to their house burning down. Escaping with their children, they go to live at April's parents' home, where Leo has always been welcomed. They don't immediately tell the family about their marital troubles. Deb and Billy, April's parents, have a secret of their own. Billy has early onset Alzheimer's. The story, told by various characters, explores lost love, enduring love, abandonment, loneliness, and life's struggles. I loved this beautiful novel.

ROSE
Finders Keepers by Natalie Barelli

4
I didn't know what to expect from this book, and it kept surprising me with multiple twists! Rose is living in NYC, barely getting by, when she passes a bookshop and sees a book that is her story! She realizes that this is the diary she wrote as a 13-year-old infatuated with her teacher. Her laptop had been stolen and the diary was on it. Now, someone named Emily Harper has taken her story and published it, claiming the credit. The problem? Rose admits in the book that she killed her teacher's wife. Now she has to get the laptop back and find out why Emily published her story. However, she didn't realize what she was getting into, as Emily is not what she seems. I enjoyed this quick read.

Sandy
The Paris Novel by Ruth Reichl

I would give this one 10 stars if I could! When her estranged mother dies, Stella is left with an unusual inheritance: a one-way plane ticket and a note reading "Go to Paris". What follows is an adventure of a lifetime.

ROSE
The Dead Girls Book Club by Zia Rayyan

3
Well, I didn't expect that outcome! Amelia's husband, Ken, is distracted as he is working a murder case. He comes home late, if at all. Amelia is feeling lonely. One day, some women overhear her talking about her husband being the lead detective on the case, and they invite her to join their book club. It is an odd book club. Yes, they read books, but they also promise to have each other's backs, no matter what. They also claim that all men are monsters, and eventually, they will turn on you. As the women bond together over their husbands, the killer keeps up their murderous spree. When one of the women in the group is attacked, they begin to suspect that something isn't right. Very similar to Freida McFadden books.

3.5 rounded to 4 stars. In 1966 California, Beverley, Elsie, and Margot are an unlikely trio of housewives. They were all married to murderers. Now, more women are being killed and they are making it their mission to find the man responsible. Beverley, unbeknownst to her friends, is carrying on an affair with married Det. Roger Greaves, and gaining insight on the killings. She also visited her ex in prison to ask questions about a murderer's mindset. Elsie is a journalist, and Margot is a glamorous woman, trying to move on. Their sleuthing leads them to discover a critical clue in discovering the identity of the killer. This puts their lives in great danger.

The Better Mother by Jennifer van der Kleut

4
3.5 rounded to 4 stars. Savannah has a brief fling with Max and later finds out she is pregnant. When she tells him, he is elated, but he mentions that he is back with his ex, Madison. He says that both he and Madison are excited for the child and will support Savannah however she needs. Then, Madison starts invading Savannah's life, telling her what to eat, where to go, how much exercise to do, etc. Savannah asks Sam to talk to Madison, he assures her he will, but Madison doesn't listen. As the pregnancy continues, it is obvious that Madison wants the child herself. The story gets a bit outlandish, and Madison is a true psychopath. I found the last chunk of the book to be far-fetched, but I wonder how far people will go for their wants?

This is a very relevant topic and it provided a good discussion for our book club. We are a senior group so not too techy and some are apprehensive of the use of AI. He provided a good story with lots to think about.

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green

1
I really didn't enjoy AN ABSOLUTELY REMARKABLE THING by Hank Green. I found it slow and pretty boring. I was expecting a real alien story, but it was mostly about a giant metal statue in the middle of a city. It just wasn't my kind of book.

Lauren
The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain

5
A backlist gem!! I am a library enthusiast and have been delving into older books that have been beloved faves of my book friends, and THE DREAM DAUGHTER has been recommended to me countless times, although I was constantly drowning in my TBR and putting this backlist book on the bookish back burner. I am SO GLAD I decided to bite the bookish bullet and finally borrow it from the library! I binged it in two days! It’s time travel mixed with historical fiction and family drama! As a new mama, this book plucked my bookish heart strings in such an emotional way! Five stars and teary eyes!

Julie
Dissection of a Murder by Jo Murray

4
This story kept me on the edge of my seat and I really enjoyed the twists and turns. One of the twists I did predict but I still thought was good. I do wish we got more info on “Witness X’s” upbringing to help us better understand the character; that felt a bit underdeveloped. Also, some of the forced feminism at the beginning of the book was a little fake but maybe that was intentional? Overall, a good story and a captivating read.

Susan
The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett

Breakneck by Dan Wang

4
This book talks about how China is a country where engineers are mostly in power versus the United States where lawyers are mostly in power. Therefore, the U.S. (especially infrastructure) is bogged down in lawsuits and China superior in building. Mr. Wang discusses other positive and negative aspects of China as well including their response to COVID, as well as the one child policy.

Mindy
Land by Maggie O'Farrell

I finished this book feeling swept away in this family drama. This is not a book you can read quickly or skim through. Each word is beautiful and lends to the feelings and atmosphere created. It was a hard story but told very well.

The Midnight Train by Matt Haig

3
I have read several books by Matt Haig and this is my least favorite. The writing was good, however, the plot was predictable.

Elizabeth
Buckeye by Patrick Ryan

3
The book is a good read, but not a compelling one. All the characters seem to lack emotion so I was less involved in their lives.

Laura
Twice by Mitch Albom

4
This is the story of a man who has the power to live any time of his life, twice, but only twice. He has to accept the outcome of the second time. It’s a story of love and longing. I really enjoyed the ending. It’s a fast listen and is read by the author.

nanci
The Gulf of Lions by Caitlin Shetterley

5
I loved this book from the first page. Having never read or known about this author, the book appeared somewhere in my search for a next read. I was intrigued by the title and beautiful cover, and I bought it for my Kindle to read on vacation. I read some of it on the plane, saved the rest for my week stay visiting family and friends. The story got better and better. The characters were well established by now, almost friends, and I rooted for them, cried with them. I was delighted when they were. The mountain vistas, the lavender fields in Provence and the crisp rivers and lakes so enticing. Alice and her daughters, Iris and Sophie, swam, laughed, cried, fought, shared meals with strangers and healed their rifts. A gorgeous read.

Suzanne
Her Cold Justice by Robert Dugoni

Keera Duggan, returning from Italy, is trying to recover from jet lag and playing catch up at the Duggan family law firm. JP Harrison, their investigator, comes in needing to talk to Keera. His nephew needs a lawyer after being taken to the police station with charges pending. A man he had worked with was shot and killed along with the brutal murder of his girlfriend. Billy Ford and his partner Rossi are in charge of getting the evidence in the case against Michael.

Dorothy
Where the Wildflowers Grow by Terah Shelton Harris

5
Loved this book! The story keeps you turning the pages. The characters make you care about them, even minor characters. The themes stay with you long after finishing the book. And nature is like a character throughout transforming characters and readers. I wanted to know how the book ended but was sad when it did because I didn’t want to move on. I got it from the library but ended up buying a copy to read it again. This is rare for me. My favorite book of the year so far. Don’t miss it!

Mrs. Astor and Alva Vanderbilt used all their social standing trying to outdo each other hosting dinners and gatherings trying to exclude the other. Both were very devoted to their children experiencing tragedy in early deaths and marriages to “unacceptable “ spouses. They eventually found some peace and acceptance. Alva Vanderbilt eventually became engaged in the Suffrage Movement. She finally found peace in her life by trying to help others.

Lesley
The Descendants by Kaui Hart Hemmings

5
This tragi-comedy set in Hawaii was adapted into an Oscar-winning screenplay and it's no wonder why I love it! The characters are so well drawn and the conflict in the book is continually pushed to the limit. It is a funny and at times tragic look at what it means to lose a loved one, but in this case what is gained becomes so much more. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall

5
One of the best books I have ever read. My heart was beating a million times a minute. I loved every page of this wonderful book.

Patti
Theo of Golden by Allen Levi

5
Lovely book with deep characters, great moral teaching and most of all a book about empathy, compassion and kindness. I would consider this book in the same category as TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE by Mitch Albom. It might be a book you want to gift to others or at minimum pass around the family. The author took time to adequately describe each character and at the end I didn't know who was my favorite person besides Theo. I might say Helen as she was so interesting. I also loved Kendrick as the wise man who was a janitor with a hard life but dealt with it with courage and happiness. Then there was the artist who put this all on paper. I imagine spending lots of time in that diner looking at the portraits and wondering what these people were like.

God's Country by William Kent Krueger

Great characters and setting in the BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area). Mystery and moral dilemma.

Marilyn
The Underground Sisters by Soraya M. Lane

5
THE UNDERGROUND SISTERS by Soraya M. Lane was a historical fiction novel that took place during the Nazi invasions of France and Amsterdam and in present day. It was based on true events where two young women involved with the resistance in their respective countries find themselves in Ravensbruck, an all women’s concentration camp. The characters were believable and flawed. All of my emotions were affected while reading this book. THE UNDERGROUND SISTERS was both heartbreaking and uplifting. It was hard to read during certain scenes, but it is so important to remind ourselves of the atrocities that the Nazis inflicted so they are never allowed to happen again. This was a well-written and researched book. I recommend it highly.

One of the most excellent books I've read this year. The setting is Medieval Bruges, where a young girl whose name is Aleys lives with her parents, two brothers and a sister. When their mother dies, Aleys leaves home and finds her way into a community of religious women that is not church related. Aleys has religious visions and even heals a young boy. I'ts a story of religious and politiclal turmoil and how it eventually affects Aleys.

Once and Again by Rebecca Serle

4
Rebecca Serle novels are always a delight to read, and this one was no exception. ONCE AND AGAIN sparks the readers imagination with the possibility of a do-over. I think most everyone at some point in their lives has a moment (or many moments) they would like to go back and do over, or a situation where they want to change the outcome. This story was magic!

Songbird in the Gallows by Alta Hensley

Saylor's father is murdered and Blue, her father's best friend, has promised to protect her. But first he has to find her and then keep track of her while the people who murdered her father are trying to do the same thing to her. Can Saylor allow someone to help her when she feels like she's been abducted? As both Saylor and Blue navigate their feelings, they form an alliance and more that will work for them both. No spoilers here, this is a must-read.

The Covering by Miss Cheyenne Mitchell

5
THE COVERING is a fast-paced story about two teenage sisters, Celia and Drew Bellis, who are being raised by a family of vampires. Although they don't know it and have moved around from place to place many times, they will be horrified to learn their family's horrible secret and the reasons for them moving from place to place when many terrible murders occur. THE COVERING is filled with mystery and horror with a jaw-dropping ending like no other.

The Jewish Hospital by Jonathan Hammel

4
THE JEWISH HOSPITAL by Jonathan Hammel was based on true events in the only Jewish hospital that was allowed to operate in Berlin, Germany during the Nazi regime. It was both engaging and fascinating. I had never read about the ordeals the Jewish doctors and nurses, who worked in this hospital, had to endure. The author based his novel on the experiences of his own grandmother who worked as a nurse in this hospital during that harrowing time in history. It was thought-provoking and informative. The characters were authentic and very believable and engaging. I highly recommend this book.

Daughters of the Sun and Moon by Lisa See

5
Lisa See has long been a favorite author. Her writing encompasses the historical details we have come to expect from her. DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON was based on true events that actually occurred. It portrayed the lives of three Chinese women that arrived in America, all under very different circumstances. Their lives, while separate, intersect and they become reliant on each other. They each had to individually and collectively learn how to forge their own paths and learn how to navigate the challenges and heartaches they encountered in their new homes. It was about discrimination, fear, friendship and courage. These characters will stay with me for a long time. I still find myself thinking about them. I highly recommend this book.

ROSE
Dolly All the Time by Annabel Monaghan

5
This is definitely my favorite Annabel Monaghan book, and it is narrated by Julia Whelan - double win! Dolly Brick has moved home to Whitfield, RI with her son, Gus, to assist her father for the summer. She encounters wealthy, socially awkward Stewart Whitfield while returning from an errand and helps him with a flat tire, and finds out his fiancée has just broken their engagement. Stewart needs his family to see him as trustworthy and steady, so he asks Dolly to be his fake girlfriend. She agrees for a hefty sum, which she needs to fix the roof on the family home. This is a sweet and fun story, with some serious moments. There are deep-set feelings of abandonment and trauma, but the love story shines. I really enjoyed it.

ROSE
The Beach at Summerly by Beatriz Williams

5
The cover of this book would lead you to believe it is a light summer beach read. But, it is so much more! The story is told in two timelines: June 1946 and April 1954. In 1946, Emilia (Cricket) Winthrop is the caretaker's daughter for the Peabody's mansion, Summerly. Cricket and the Peabody boys, Amory and Shep, were great friends growing up. Now older, they are dealing with the aftermath of WWII. Cricket and Shep become close. When Olive moves to town, Cricket is awed by her and the opportunities she offers. Then, Sumner Fox arrives and needs Cricket's assistance to trap a spy feeding info to the Russians. Cricket's plans for her future are derailed. Eight years later, Fox asks for Cricket's help again. Interesting historical fiction.

A Pair of Aces by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray

5
I really enjoy this pair's writing, and I always learn something! Eunice Carter is Manhattan's first Black Assistant DA. Her team is working to shut down the mob, targeting Lucky Luciano for gambling, extortion, and tax evasion. Eunice focuses on tying him to the prostitution business and believes she can find a correlation. She enlists the help of Polly, a madam who is a Russian Jewish immigrant and very protective of her girls. Polly is not anxious to help, fearing for her life and the lives of her employees. While there is no indication that Polly and Eunice met in real life, the authors imagined a collaboration. I learned about these two remarkable women, and what it took to build a case to topple the mob.

The Happily Ever After Playlist by Abby Jiminez

5
This book checks all the marks for a great summer read, although truth be told, I could read her books any time of the year. I love her characters, her storylines, and her happy endings. I am obsessed with Abby Jimenez! I can’t wait to read the last book of the series.

Very good book. The only thing I had a hard time with was the actual "railroad". I think I would have enjoyed it more if that part had been more realistic.

Niki
Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth

5
Mabel evokes many feelings as you are reading the book. You feel her sadness, her disdain for others, and her loyalty and love. Sally Hepworth created a character that fit the story, a curmudgeon 81-year-old who will stay with you for a while. Or until another character captures your attention...

Isola by Allegra Goodman

4
ISOLA is a work of historical fiction inspired by the real life of a French noblewoman in the sixteenth century. Marguerite is heir to a great fortune and a life of privilege. Then she is orphaned. Her inheritance is relegated to a cousin who spends it all. He forces Marguerite and her loyal servant, Damienne, to accompany his expedition to New France. On board the ship, she engages in a relationship with her guardian’s servant. When they’re discovered, they are brutally punished and abandoned on a deserted island. This is a story of resilience, inner strength, love, and faith. Ms. Goodman’s writing brings it all to life in vivid detail.

Sean
City of Bones by Michael Connelly

5
Michael Connelly might be the best at this. This is a simple police procedural. That doesn't mean the story or characters were simple, but the book doesn't rely on an insane twist to be good. Here, a decades-old murder is discovered and Bosch is on the case. He's not a super cop, full of flaws, but he's an excellent detective. Watching how his brain works a case is fantastic. There were also some shocking developments here that I didn't see coming. The series isn't afraid to do the unexpected. I really enjoyed the supporting cast, which is vital to this book. The book shows the importance of one decision and what can come from it. Overall, just an excellent book.

Marcia
Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth

4
It's an interesting story about an 81-year-old woman and her 6-year-old neighbor. Mabel didn't have the best childhood. She rarely felt loved, and she still doesn't think she has friends except for Daphne, a friend from kindergarten, and pesty Persephone. At the end of the book, I liked it.

Valley of the Moms by Hannah Selinger

3
I enjoyed the dual narrators, Anna and Denny, before and after the murder. Denny's navigation of single fatherhood was very realistic. It was well written and conveyed the small town politics feel of a PTO very well. I only gave it three stars, because I like a true ending with no loose threads, even if the ending is probably more accurate than I would like.

Ellie finds her estranged father beaten up behind a bar in Alaska. She soon realizes Pete, her father, has gambled away the family fishing boat as well as the permit which allows them to fish. The bookie gives them till the end of the fishing season to repay what is owed. With real grit and gumption Ellie knows just what needs to be done and how to do it. The characters are well developed, showing just how resilient a single mother can be, especially when the chips are down. I listened to the audio. Thanks to NetGalley - the narrator did a great job putting the reader in the middle of Alaska.

Natalie creates a social media presence built around her perfect life as a trad wife. Then one day, she is back in the 1800s as a real traditional wife without any of the amenities she had in her present life. Her husband, Caleb, is now a different man with cold, dead eyes. Her children are different, including Mary, a child she didn't have in the present. As the story floats between two timelines, it is obvious that Natalie didn't realize what she was signing up for when she married at such a young age. As the truth of her life and the persona she has crafted is exposed, she tries desperately to save her image. I will have to think about this one for a bit as it is unsettling, and the values it held dear are those that gets exploited.

The Honeymoon Suite by Rebecca Taylor McKay

4
If the Amalfi Coast has been on your bucket list, then I have a book for you - THE HONEYMOON SUITE by Rebecca Taylor McKay. It’s been almost four years since we were fortunate enough to vacation in Atrani on the Amalfi Coast, yet reading this book transported me right back there to the breathtaking, picturesque cliffs and sun-bleached alleyways. This suspenseful tale is set in 1961 on the Amalfi Coast. Clara and Spencer seem like the perfect couple, yet when Clara receives a cryptic note, it not only has her questioning who her husband really is but also who she is. With its 1961 setting, this compelling read is a vintage-style read with themes of obsession and betrayal. A perfect beach read.

Bree has never recovered from the death of her daughter, Mel, 10 years earlier, or her subsequent divorce from Logan. She now lives in Uruguay with her partner, Sebastian. Then, her ex-husband calls and tells her that there has been a change in the case. A statement by the convicted killer questions whether the right person was arrested for Mel's murder. Bree returns to the U.S. and the college town where her daughter was killed to get answers to her questions. She stumbles onto some information that turns her life upside down. This was a quick read with a few red herrings intended to throw you off track. Jealousy and infidelity were themes throughout the novel.

The Keeper by Tana French

5
I just finished THE KEEPER by Tana French, and I'm sad, not that the end is sad but that this is the third book in a trilogy. It's sad that I reached the end. No more Cal or Lena or Trey. No more Ardnakelty, Ireland. The trilogy centers on Cal, a former Chicago police detective who has moved to a small farming town in Ireland, Ardnakelty, for its beauty and its seeming simplicity. But it isn't long before he discovers that his first impression wasn't exactly correct; he was right about the beauty, but troubles find him partly because people there know he was a police detective. Heck, the police there (the "guards") think of him as one of them.

The Fatal Unpleasantness at Netherfield by Claudia Gray

5
The newest release in the Mr Darcy and Miss Tilney murder series. This time the author takes us to Netherfield Park, home of Charles and Jane Bingley. Of course, we are not far from Longbourne, so the Bennets also make appearances! I just love this series and the two sleuthing young characters. This might not be my favorite book in the series but it is still a wonderfully fun read!

The Hazelbourne Ladies Motorcycle and Flying Club by Helen Simonson

4
The Great War has ended and the men have returned, which means the women of England are no longer needed for the jobs they held during the war. But you can’t un-ring a bell, and you can’t expect that someone who has tasted freedom and the glow of accomplishment will easily give up the chance for more. Simonson’s writing has been compared to Jane Austen’s. Like Austen, this is a comedy of manners, where strong-willed heroines chafe against societal expectations and true love wins in the end. Just lovely.

This is a leisurely read of a mystery novel to be savored for its atmospheric, descriptive writing and the multi-layered plot. I enjoyed the "breadcrumb trail" of clues that lead to many possible suspects. The dual timeline and characters in each were easy to follow and eventually intertwined to a more complicated, surprising ending.

A challenge to read a book involving sports had me picking up this cozy mystery. I did enjoy the behind-the-scenes look at high-level skating competitions, including the intricacies of judging (in the old system, where ordinals were sometimes more important than actual scores). But I would have liked more push/pull between the detective and the amateur sleuth, Bex.

This a long mystery taking place in small town Missouri with a cast of characters. It’s the 1970s, it’s unchallenged parenting and there’s a slew of girls going missing. Our main character saves one teenager from being kidnapped only to find himself the victim. From there the mystery launches and the story of love, loss and friendship begins. It’s a long read but it’s a page-turner.

Fox and I by Catherine Raven

3
I really wanted to love this memoir; it has been on my TBR list for years, but I just didn't connect. Raven is a biologist who has isolated herself in a cabin in Montana. She had a very poor childhood and was verbally abused by her father so she feels that she never really had friends or a loving family. She begins an unlikely friendship with a fox, reading to him from THE LITTLE PRINCE daily. The fox seems to watch and listen, but obviously can't speak to her. When wildfires come to the area, she is concerned about the wildlife and makes her way to escape. She reflects on the fact that foxes will take many years to learn to trust humans, and although she fed the fox and read to it daily, they were truly two different species.

This was freaky! Poe is a podcaster who interviews people who admit to crimes, while keeping her own crime quiet. When Poe was a teen, she witnessed her mother being stabbed to death, and when the killer saw her, he forced her to watch while he burned her house down. She hunted the killer and murdered him. But, now, a man is claiming he is the killer on her podcast. He knows too much information not to be real. Did she kill an innocent man? Her boyfriend and father are concerned that Poe is in danger from this man who claims to be the killer, and they are afraid for her if she admits her own crime. This is an eerie thriller where you hear the thoughts of a deranged person and confront the moral question: is it right to kill a killer?

She betrays her friendship by being intimate with Skandar, the husband (but not fully). Although I am now retired, I found the points made in this short book valid and worthwhile. I would have loved to have this manual when I was working. I experienced many of the issues the author discusses, and her methodology is clear and concise for dealing with them. She provides examples and solutions. This is a must-read for employees and employers alike. A great workplace manual! Great advice. I loved the reality checks, and the manner in which the book was structured.

Cinderella from the perspective of the evil stepmother, who isn’t all that evil after all, just a mother trying to do the best for her two daughters and one stepdaughter. Dear Evan Hanson: The Novel by Val Emmich, Steven Levenson, et al.

3
DEAR EVAN HANSON is a Tony-winning musical so I was curious to check out the novel. Sometimes young adult fiction can be so refreshing to read, but this was difficult for me to get through. The subject matter is hard: depression, loss, isolation, suicide, drug abuse. I was so stressed reading it! I can't figure out why this is a musical, but that is not to say that it has nothing to offer. I did not really enjoy the novel but can see how some might.

This is set in a fictional very small island, Harris, in the outer Hebrides where the main commerce is to weave the tweed and raise sheep. The wool of the sheep is too rough and the wool for the tweed has to be imported so it's a precarious life. Three generations of a family of McLeods are in the story. The characters love each other deeply, though it is not obvious from their interactions in the beginning.

You Killed Me First by John Marrs

5
This was so insane! I fully accept the newer genre of twists for the sake of twists, but this worked for me. The book is about three women/neighbors who all have secrets and then things get crazy. John Marrs has this ability to make me fully comfortable in the weirdest situations. The novel switched between each of the three main characters as they go about their lives, lying, cheating, committing crimes, and more. There were so many times I audibly gasped. I didn't see any of the many twists coming for the most part. This won't be for everyone, but I flew through it, excited to get to the next chapter. Overall, pure entertainment.

Reading this book had just become a part of my daily reading until I reached the end, and then it hit me — how I had become so fully invested in each of the characters and the deep impact this story has had on my thinking. The characters are so beautifully developed as the present and past stories unfold. “Whistler” is the perfect title for this book that isn’t focused around this named horse. Loved this book, the characters, the way the story forms and how it’s told, the careful structuring of what “Whistler” truly means. A delicate discussion of life, death, relationships, and life’s losses and triumphs. My favorite 2026 read so far.

Subitle: Lessons Unlearned From America’s Most Violent Hurricane. I remember Camille, but I did not remember the absolute devastation of those communities that Camille hit head-on. The authors included many interviews with the survivors. The first-hand narratives of the storm’s strength are gripping and terrifying. Published in 2005, just after Katrina hit New Orleans, the subtitle is truly apt – “Lessons Unlearned” indeed!

This fun novel captures Midwest America of the early 1950s. Switchboard operators, small town gossip, saddle shoes, scandal and family are at the forefront. Vivian believes it’s her duty to eavesdrop on phone calls she’s personally connected at the switchboard until she overhears something scandalous about herself. From there, a cast of characters unfolds a myriad of secrets. The women are strong and overcome so much in this page-turner.
