LINDA
Flesh and Blood by Karen Wiesner

I freely chose to review this book on my own. Jo Jo Summers risked her heart once and regretted it. She lived her life now as a paper doll with no emotions, no danger, and no pain. But hooking up with a stranger turned her world upside down as he was so very good to her in ways her ex wasn't, and she sneaked out the door of the hotel thinking she'd never see him again. Ten years later she'd find out that she was wrong. Randy Briggs only wanted to protect her but she was so jittery that he just had to hold her, and then after one night of hot sex, bang she was gone and he had no way to contact her and looked for her everywhere! Ten years later, he rehabbed houses and sold them at a profit, but the last house sold before he could find her.

Pamela
Fates and Traitors by Jennifer Chiaverini

4
Had to give a high mark because I couldn't put the book down, even knowing the ending! The author looks at John Wilkes Booth through the eyes of the women closest to him.

Sandra
Beacon 23 by Hugh Howey

2
At first I found this tale of the space-age equivalent of the lighthouse keeper to be fascinating, but I became bored halfway through this short book.

Lorraine
The Wonder by Emma Donoghue

4
Interesting read. I was rather appalled by many aspects of the story. So many curious judgements with little attempts for characters to communicate and clarify opinions. The ending was unexpected, but it fit somehow.

Rhonda
Hungry Heart by Jennifer Weiner

5
First book of essays by Jennifer. She is open and honest about her life. Her family is amazingly unusual but always full of love.

Jill
The Wiregrass by Pam Webber

4
A debut novel that will stay with you long after you are done reading. Cousins spending summer in small southern town with an aunt and uncle. Struggles with puberty, first loves, evil secret that will shatter many lives. Reminiscent of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.

Harriet
Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett

4
Told from the alternating perspectives of various family members, the story is about mental illness as it affects a family. It centers on the oldest son, Michael, and the ways his mother and siblings try to help him and themselves.

Jill
This is Your Life, Harriet Chance! by Jonathan Evison

5
This is an amazing life review process story of 78-year-old Harriet Chance. Do not be swayed by the narrator's disarming style (I was surprised, but the style worked well for the book.); this is a story with substance. Harriet comes to terms with events and people in her past. She had avoided confronting these things, but the book explains why. In so doing, the author portrays a character who we can strongly identify with. A wonderful read.

Melissa
The Best Friend by Shalini Boland

5
I loved this book! Absolutely brilliant! I first read THE GIRL FROM THE SEA, which I loved and could not wait for the author to put out another book, and now it is here and I loved this book even more! This book grabbed me right from the very first page and kept my interest throughout. It is one of the most intense thrillers I have read in a long time! The characters were so real and believable, and I cannot even get over the level of craziness! I highly recommend this exciting story!

Melissa
The Obsidian Chamber by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

5
After having read and devoured CRIMSON SHORE, I was super excited to read this book. We start off almost immediately after the last book ends, and it is an exciting page-turner from beginning to end. There are three separate stories going on and each one is just as gripping! Lots of action and surprises! A great book!

Jane
Breathing Room by Patricia Elam

5
A first novel written by professor of creative writing a Howard University. Two friends, a photographer married to a lawyer and a single mom with a teen daughter struggle to maintain their friendship through disagreements about daily life choices. Although this was written a generation ago, it still holds up as one mother struggles with marital choices and the other struggles with raising her child in a time of violence and the need for a peaceful solution. It addresses the question of college friends remaining close after so many years. Ms. Elam is now at work on a second novel to be ready in the next year or so.

LINDA
Awakened by Fire by Erin Kellison

5
I freely chose to review this ARC as I had read the first book and wanted to continue with the story. Samantha Vine returned to the very place she escaped when she turned eighteen, but now at twenty-five she had to be a bridesmaid in a hideous dress no less! She only needed to go to the wedding to visit with her grandad, then escape back to her cozy life in Phoenix. Easy peasy. Yeah, right. Billionaire dragon-shifter Warrick Voclain was a member of the Bloodkin Triad and he is no stranger to power as the head of the household Voclain. He knew his trusted steward's granddaughter had a teenage crush on him, but with her dazzling return now all grown up he had to have her, even though he was one hundred and fifty-four.

Wendy
The Velvet Hours by Alyson Richman

3
Compelling.

Rosa
I Will Send Rain by Rae Meadows

5
I received an Advance Reader's Copy of this book. This is a beautifully-written story that reminded me of John Steinbeck. Set in Mulehead, Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl in 1934, this is the story of Annie Bell, mother of 15-year-old Birdie and 8-year-old Fred. Annie and husband Samuel are farmers and are struggling through the drought. Many families are leaving Mulehead to go west to California for a better life, but Samuel is determined to stay, feeling called by God through his dreams. There is desperation throughout the story, sometimes interrupted by moments of rain and hope. The writing is poetic and I lingered in the words. I may have to read this again to savor it some more.

Yvonne Palagano
A Friend of Mr. Lincoln by Stephen Harrigan

5
Wonderful book about Lincoln's dark side and his suffering with depression in his early days as a lawyer and how he settled in Springfield. It's a fiction book based on fact and very interesting.

Carolann Goslee
Casino Royale by Ian Fleming

5
My husband read these books when he was in high school and college. Five years ago our sons bought him a set of paperbacks. I just finished the first one and will try to read the whole set this winter. The descriptions of Bond are amazing.

Terry
Victoria by Daisy Goodwin

4
In 1837 Alexandrina Victoria, 18 years and one month of age, becomes queen. This is the story of the beginning of her reign and her struggle to prove she was more than a child and capable of ruling her country. It is the story of a young Victoria who has feelings for her Prime Minister - the only man she feels listens to her. Victoria, who dislikes her cousin Albert and refused to marry yet later does; years later she mourns his death. Set to be televised in early 2017. A delightful and engaging story. Victoria is stubborn, strong, and lovable. I highly recommend this book.

Shirley
An Obvious Fact by Craig Johnson

4
Continuing my enjoyment of the Longmire series with my favorite characters in a new setting, BUT I would rather see them back in Absaroka County. All Longmire fans will want to read this. Henry may have found an adult child, but new fans should start at the beginning of the series.

Susan
The Girl from Venice by Martin Cruz Smith

5
I don't know how to say this any other way but I loved this book. Cenzo Vianello is one of my favorite characters in a book ever. He is exactly what he is, a fisherman in the lagoons near Venice, Italy. I had no idea that they fished there. I always just pictured it was full of gondolas but apparently before and during WWII, they did. This is the story of a female Jewess on the run from the Nazis in the waning days of WWII. The fisherman's brother is a big star for Mussolini and there are so many other twists. You may think you don't want to read another WWII novel but this is different. It is just so entertaining and worth the read.

Nancy
All Is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker

4
This book provided some interesting develoments as the story unfolded. I was interested to learn about the use of memory-erasing drugs for trauma victims and the controversial results. The final chapters had a surprising twist.

Judy
The Cottage by Michael Phillips

4
THE INHERITANCE continues and finds all those characters who might have inherited "The Cottage" in Scotland interacting with each other. Can an American girl, who the town folk don't like, find a way to understand Scotland and her people on this small island of which she is now "the Laird"? You will love this story of conflict, love, and faith.

Phoebe
Becoming Nicole by Amy Ellis Nutt

5
Written with a scientific eye paired with a keen view of social-emotional challenges children face who are born with a body that does not match their innate sense of their identifying sex, this is the story of a small boy's journey to become the girl she knew she felt she was and the amazing family who supported her.

Holly
Troublemaker by Leah Remini

4
I like Leah Remini because she is outspoken and wanted to know her thoughts regarding Scientology. I found the book interesting and entertaining. She tells it like it is.

Tessa B C
Chasing Cezanne by Peter Mayle

3
This is a fun romp of a crime caper, featuring the rich and famous, a couple of big-time art thieves, a curious (but legitimate) art dealer, and an art forger who is ready to make a change. Of course, there’s also a lovely young lady to brighten the landscape. And who could argue against the delights and magic of Paris and Provence? It reminded me of the Cary Grant movies of the 1940s and 1950s.

Jackie
Extreme Prey by John Sandford

3
I truly enjoy John Sandford, but I found this to be a slow read, not as exciting as his past books. He has great characters and twists in the stories he writes.

barbara
All Who Do Not Return by Shulem Deen

5
This book opened my eyes to a community that is very insular yet not understood. As such, the interaction among them is strange in modern times.

Norene
Wild Irish Heart by Tricia O'Malley

4
A really nice romance.

Judy
The Bookshop on the Cornwe by Jenny Colgan

5
This book grabbed me on the first page. I was glued to it until I finished it. Nina is a wonderful character, a real woman with more courage than she gives herself credit for. This book is for anyone, but mostly for readers, writers, poets, artists, dancers, farmers and best friends.

Judy O.
Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

5
Jodi Picoult usually takes on controversial topics as the focal point for her books. This one is racism, a very timely problem for sure. Ruth, a black long-time nurse in a labor and delivery section of a hospital is arrested and tried for failing to care for the baby of white supremacists, and the baby subsequently dies. In her defense is the fact that she has been forbidden by the parents from touching their baby, and another nurse is always supposed to care for him in the hospital. The day that he goes into respiratory distress she is alone in the L & D room. She is arrested for his death because she seemingly did not do her job. Picoult's books are always a treat to read, and this is no exception.

Marsha
Etched in Sand by Regina Calcattara

4
This book is a true story. It takes place on Long Island. It is hard to believe that such abuse takes place. It is amazing that the author rose above her life to become a noted political person. The book is a page-turner. I recommend it to everyone.

Thomas
Airbag Scars by Jim Heskett

5
I really enjoyed reading this book.

Thomas
Blood on the Tracks by Barbara Nickless

Jack Emery has their computer guy Abner Tookus go over the casino’s records and he finds the withdrawals. Abner knows who the hacker is, but feels like a traitor when he gives up the name. Then the guys hear of a plot to rob the casino and they go after the man who thought up the robbery. The women of the Sisterhood books were very good, for the most part, but the ones about the men of the Sisterhood are a disappointment.

Linda

Linda
Do You Want to Start a Scandal by Tessa Dare

5
Great book deserving more than 5 stars! A young lady plans to tour the continent with her best friend and doesn’t want to get married, but her mother is determined to find her a husband. Charlotte knows her mother has selected Lord Granville and she confronts him in the library. She thinks he is a cold, unfeeling man and tells him she will marry only for love. He tells her he can never love anyone. Thus, their relationship begins. As she tells Granville several times, she is innocent but not ignorant. Lots of funny situations where you find yourself laughing.

Blue Monday by Nicci French

5
I am obsessed with Nicci French's Freida Klein series. Must begin with BLUE MONDAY and continue through to fifth "Friday" book to be released soon.

Julie
The Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly

5
Gripping story of women who were used for experiments at Ravensbruck concentration camp for women during the World War II. Very well written and it held my attention until the last page.

Linda
Let’s Play Make-Believe by James Patterson and James O’Born

3
A short BookShot. Christy Moore’s wealthy husband Brennan is divorcing her and leaving her with nothing due to the pre-nuptial agreement she signed. She meets Martin Hawking, a genial guy, who just wants to have fun. The two like to play make-believe games, such as taking a Bentley out on a test drive lasting several days. What Martin did not know was that Christy had a plan to get even with Brennan and Martin would be playing an integral part.

Deborah
Apprentice in Death by J. D. Robb

5
I absolutely love this series. Ex-cop turned into a revenge serial killer and training is his daughter to be his sharp shooter. The story is a strong paced one and is a fairly quick read. I almost hated finishing the book as I have to wait for the next one.

Rochelle
Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

5
Jodi Picoult's voices are so authentic that when I started reading I was extremely uncomfortable, but I couldn't put it down. I'm glad I continued to read. I have read all her books except her first. This is indeed one of her best. The characters remain with you long after the book is finished.

Sue
Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

3
I feel like this should never have been published, but, on the other hand, it was a fantastic book for our book discussion group. Also, I learned a lot about the South and what it was like to live during that time period.

Kay
Cannery Row by John Steinbeck

4
A riveting portrait of hardscrabble lives in California.

Peg
Inheriting Edith by Zoe Fishman

3
This novel involves a single mother, Maggie, who is bequeathed a beach house in a former friend's will. There is a caveat and that is the friend's mother, Edith, lives there. Maggie will have to care for her. Edith is 82 and diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Neither is looking forward to this arrangement. Things get off to a rocky start but gradually the two women come to accept the arrangement and form a bond. The side stories contributed to the novel and made it more heartfelt as both women learned what was important to them, love and understanding. Since I have done volunteer work with Alzheimer's patients, I like how the author wrote Edith's condition into the story to help us have a better understanding of this terrible disease.

Sheree
Nutshell by Ian McEwan

5
I really enjoyed the story of the unborn child's experiences of what is happening in the outside world and to him in the womb, his mother and his uncles murder of his father and what finally happens at his birth. It keep me reading to see what was going to happen. I did not like the characters of his mother and uncle. Great read!

Linda
Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

4
I really liked this book. The main character, Katie, really seemed to have a good head on her shoulders, even when the rest of her friends and acquaintances may not have.

Janet
The Twenty-Three by Linwood Barclay

5
Suspenseful final book in the Promise Falls Trilogy. Beginning on page one the reader will be hooked.

Jan
Arrowood by Laura McHugh

4
A good American gothic mystery. Lots of clues, many suspects - almost two decades ago, twin girls (not yet two years old) were kidnapped from their front yard and their older sister (8 years old) was supposed to be watching them. They were never found. There were clues but no bodies and no convictions. Now the older sister has returned to the homestead after making a mess of her life - like her mother and her father - and she is haunted by the disappearance of the twins who were in her care in the front yard. She left them for a moment and they disappeared. There are many clues, many false leads, lots of secrets about her parents and the neighbors. A wonderful read.

The Secret Diary of Lydia Bennet by Natasha Farrant

4
This book will transport you into the mind of Lydia Bennet, a 16-year-old with a desire to leave boring behind. Discover what it feels like to be the youngest of five sisters in a time when respectability and status mean everything in 1811's society. The story is a diary and reads from Lydia's viewpoint throughout. Descriptions of Brighton and bathing (swimming) are interesting and vivid. Knowing her fate from Jane Austen, I was still rooting for another ending for Miss Lydia. Highly recommend this book as a companion read to PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.

Liza
The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald

4
I enjoyed this sweet debut novel by Swedish Bivald. A woman makes a trip from Sweden to Broken Wheel, Iowa to meet her long-time fellow book-loving pen pal, only to arrive to find people leaving the woman's funeral. To everyone's surprise, she decides to stay, and ends up opening a bookstore using her pen pal's vast book collection. A quirky cast of characters who eventually warm up to the newest member of Broken Wheel, only to learn that her visa is soon expired and she must leave. A good book for fellow book lovers.

Gladys

Who proves to be loyal to France and who proves loyal to England? Can true love survive among the many threats to its existence? Hang on for a royal roller-coaster ride. Cheryl Bolen is a gifted writer who has earned many awards.

LINDA
Cocoa and Chanel by Donna Joy Usher

5
I freely chose to review this ARC from an unknown author, I am glad I took the chance as this book is hilarious! Chanel Smith opened her big mouth and told her sleazy boss's husband that she was joining the police department in order to escape his unwanted advances, and naturally living in a small country town the word spread like wildfire. Returning home, her mum told her how proud she was of her as word had reached her mum before she could explain. In all of her life she'd yearned for this so now she applied. Just her luck there was a need for female officer and now she couldn't tell the truth because the whole town was there to send her off. Suddenly overwhelmed with the town's love she was on her way to make the town proud of her.

Linda
Thrice the Brindel Cat Hath Mew'd by Alan Bradley

5
I have read and loved every single one of Alan Bradley's eight books. Others of my friends have commented how much they enjoyed listening to the audio version so I decided to try one out myself.

Linda
I'm Just a Person by Tig Notaro

3
Tig Notaro is a stand-up comic who, within a very few weeks, experienced multiple personal illnesses and the sudden death of her mother. Basically the book is an examination of her life and her relationship with her stepfather. I think this book could have used better editing.

Marilyn
Memory of Muskets by Kathleen Ernst

5
This latest installment in the Chloe Ellefson series is my favorite so far. It is set at Old World Wisconsin, which is a state historical site. The historical details and connection to Civil War reenactment are fascinating!

Phyllis
The Girl Before by JP Delaney

4
This very good psychological thriller alternates between Jane (the now girl) and Emma (the before girl) and builds the suspense and intrigue from the first page. The story is mainly set in a futuristic smart house where tenants are accepted after filling out an extensive questionnaire and approved by the owner. Jane, as current tenant, discovers that Emma, the tenant before her, died in the house and becomes obsessed with trying to find the reason. The characters are well developed and the plot interesting. I will look for more from this author. I received an advance reader’s edition.

Bonnie
Forty Autumns: A Family's Story of Courage and Survival on Both Sides of the Berlin Wall by Nina Willner

5
I just finished reading this terrific non-fiction book. Willner's mother escaped from East Berlin as a young woman, leaving her family there. She emigrated to the U.S., got married, and raised a family, all with little contact with the family she left behind. This book tells the story of the years 1945 - present. Once the Wall came down, the family was reunited. Willner, herself a U.S. Intelligence officer, tells their story. I lived through this era and visited Berlin when the Wall was up, including taking a bus from West into East Berlin. Willner's depiction of the vast difference in the two places is very accurate in my memory.

Phyllis
The Secret Diary of Lydia Bennet by Natasha Farrant

4
Set in the same time as PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, we learn the story of the youngest Bennet daughter, headstrong, impulsive Lydia and her infatuation and friendship with Wickham, which leads to marriage. Lydia can be annoying and self-centered but you can’t help but me amused by her thoughts and diary entries. This is a fresh, fun, light re-imagining of one of Austen’s characters.

Maureen
Winter Street by Elin Hilderbrand

4
A family with problems at Christmas. This is a book trilogy with WINTER STREET being the first. I did enjoy the characters and will definitely want to see what happens to them in Book Two.

Patti
The Art Forger by B. A. Shapiro

Fast moving, interesting look at the world of art. Is it a forgery or is it authentic? Throw in a love story, secrets and history. Enjoyed tremendously.

Loved it. Can't wait to read another Sara Blaedel thriller.

Lynn W
Last of the Breed by Louis L'Amour

3
Someone said this was the best of L'Amour's books. Since I've only read one other, I surely can't make that judgement, but I was up till 3:00 this morning finishing it!!!

Jim
The Steel Kiss by Jeffery Deaver

4
Another book in the Lincoln Rhyme series. Deaver has added some new character plot twists that will likely show up future books in this series.

Marie Ledin
Before the Storm by Steena Holmes

4
Thank you, Steena, for the free book. Very moving and emotional work involving how shooting and death at an elementary school affect each family on an individual basis. Have to read the rest of this series.

Marie
Stillwater Rising by Steena Holmes

Continuation of BEFORE THE STORM (Stillwater Bay, #5), which leaves you hanging on for the rest of the story. Excellent. Now on to the next book of this series.

Lori
Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple

5
WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE? was a 5 for me and this one was a 4.5. I don't think it will be as universally loved, but I couldn't put it down. I found a lot of the side plots very interesting and would have liked to have them expanded. I think book groups would find plenty to discuss with this book. I would be delighted if Semple would write a sequel; I'd love to find out what happens to the characters.

SHIRLEY L FIELDER
Before I Go To Sleep by S. J. Watson

5
I recommended it to my book club.

Brady
They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky by Benson Deng, Alephonsion Deng, Benjamin Ajak with Judy A. Bernstein

4
If you think America is a land of bigotry and suffering, you should read this book. It is the story of three boys having to fend for themselves from early childhood as their parents were killed in a war that never ended. The trials and tribulation experienced is just horrible, but their human spirit and dedication to live overcame all liabilities. This is educational as well as an interesting history of a part of the world most Americans know nothing about.

Robin
Mermaid Moon by Colleen Coble

4
You know what it feels like to snuggle up with a favorite blanket, all cozy and warm? Well, for me, Colleen Coble’s books do the same thing. Her stories spread through me, giving me that warm, happy feeling. Her latest book, MERMAID MOON, is a mystery, a romance, and an altogether delightful story. I highly recommend it. And while you’re at it, grab a cup of hot cocoa and a nice blanket. Then settle in for a wonderful journey.

Sheila
The City Baker's Guide to Country Living by Louise Miller

4
Olivia Rawlings bakes for the prestigious Emerson Club in Boston until an unfortunate incident with a Baked Alaska. She heads to small-town Vermont to visit her friend Hannah and finds a job at an inn there. There's something for everyone in this book - food, of course, and also Olivia finding a family and love and some heartbreak, small town Vermont - country fairs with an apple pie baking contest, sleigh rides in the snow, maple syrup running in the spring, and a dog, Salty, the Irish wolfhound mix.

Maureen
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

4
I have read other Kristin Hannah books and they were very much chick lit and just okay. This book, however, is not. This was a page-turner from the beginning. I love this time period and the stories coming out of Europe during the war. I highly recommend this book. If you've read others by her and didn't like them, I urge you to give this one a shot. This is by far her best book.

Francisca E B
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

3
Good but not great. It’s a compelling story, and I really liked having the action take place within the lives of these two women. However, at about the midpoint of the narrative, it took a turn towards a romantic melodrama that just really irritated me. And I thought the flashback “mystery” was entirely unnecessary and manipulative.

Kathy
A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway

3
My book club read this. We usually choose one book each year considered "classic". Our group of 7 was pretty vocal about their feelings for this book. Only two really liked it and the rest were very lukewarm. One person stated she "could not figure out why anyone would think this was his best", which she had read somewhere. Criticism ran from "dull" to "boring" to "good writing but no substance". We did agree there were a few hilarious scenes, especially with Scott Fitzgerald.

MURDER IN CONTAINMENT is the 4th book in Anne Cleeland's outstanding Acton and Doyle mystery series. If you want an engrossing mystery with complicated, quirky characters this is for you. Acton is Lord Acton and Kathleen Doyle is the love of his life and his obsession. Both are detectives with Scotland Yard. Lord Acton has a tendency to take the law into his own hands, and it's up to the fair Doyle to keep him on the straight and narrow. The secondary characters are just as clever and colorful as the leads. Although you could read this book as a standalone I definitely recommend reading the books in order in order to understand the relationships among the characters. I highly recommend this series. This is the best of the four books.

Before I Go to Sleep by S. J. Watson

4
BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP is S. J. Watson's debut novel. It is a master of twist and turns with the central character a woman who has no memory. Every day Christine Lucas has to depend on someone else to tell her who she is, who he is and what happened to her to cause this condition. Until one day, a phone rings and a man who claims to be her doctor tells her to go in her closet to a shoebox that contains a journal. Christine begins to read and so the journey back begins. It is a story that has many different paths with different characters and a question of trust.

A taut, fast-paced thriller.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

5
I could not put this book down and that has not happened in quite some time. I disagree with some others about the characters and found them fascinating. While there are some stretches that are confounding or a bit much, on the whole I found the book quite well-written. The author has a real gift for helping the reader to imagine the plot unfolding, and I was considering sleeping with the light on. Some reviewers have compared the book to GONE GIRL but I have read that too and did not compare them at all. I am not familiar with other books by Ms. Hawkings but I'm definitely looking for more.

Mary Lou
The Witches by Stacy Schiff

2
This is a 417 page historical rendering of the year 1692, when witches, accusers and old white men judges abounded. Not so different from present day really - just kidding. The subject, the Salem witch trials, is interesting, but this book is so dry. The writing is obscure, repetitive, and sometimes boring. I read the whole thing because it is my book club selection for this month; otherwise I would not have lasted beyond the 50 page rule. It is only in the last chapter that the author begins to speak to the reader, providing insights and analysis as to how the whole witch hunting era came to be. Stacy Schiff is an award-winning author, so she is no slouch. I just thought the subject could have been so much more interesting and compelling.

Dorothy Flood
Sweet Tomorrows by Debbie Macomber

5
This is the conclusion to the Rose Harbor series set in the town of Cedar Cove. You'll find out if Mark and JoMarie ever got together again or did she find a new love. If you've read the others you must read this or go back and start with the first. They were all great.

Marilyn
Another One Goes Tonight by Peter Lovesey

4
Excellent English detective novel--the latest in the Peter Diamond series. It is complex and compelling. Just when Diamond, and I, thought I had it figured out, it takes another twist. It kept me guessing until the very end!

The DCI Jones Casebook: Cryer's View by Kerry J. Donovan

5
I freely chose to review this ARC and I was hooked from the very first chapter! Someone has killed twenty-one people, a human trafficker gets off as it is suspected that there's a mole in London's National Crime Agency warning him. With the death of a junior member, Chief Superintendent Brain Knightly suspects a dirty cop in his organization, and with D.S. Cryer's memory he is perfect for the undercover assignment in London, even with his recuperating leg wound no one would suspect that he's a smart cookie after DCI Jones's friend tweaked his personnel file. Philip Cryer had been injured on the job when he fell through a rotten roof as he chased a bad guy and he drove his wife loopy as he wanted to go back to work.

Lori
First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen

5
I loved this book like I have with her others I've read ! Something magical with her stories. This book reunites characters from her first book, GARDEN SPELL, which I loved. These characters hold your attention. I especially loved Bay and Josh beginning a relationship and how true they are to themselves. I hope to hear more from them if there's a third book. I feel you could enjoy this book by itself but would be better read having a good insight from GARDEN SPELL of the characters and the history. Wonderful read. Look forward to her next!

Big Sky Christmas by C. J. Carmichael

5
Grateful for the family that adopted him as a youngster made it impossible for him to forgive himself for being the driver when one of his brothers was killed in an unavoidable accident. Nobody blamed him but he could not get the accident from his mind. He had loved that brother and, alas, had loved that brother's fiancé as well. He worked hard but sought a lifetime change for himself. You'll enjoy this story. C. J. Carmichael is a gifted writer.

Far From True by Linwood Barclay

5
Everything Linwood Barclay has written, I've read and absolutely loved it. Each book keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end, when all the pieces come together. FAR FROM TRUE is no exception. The second novel in his newest trilogy, it's packed with detail, drama, and suspense. There are so many different pieces to this story, from multiple crimes and lies to numerous characters, but Linwood writes in a way that makes sense and each part is kept together. I am anxiously awaiting the release of the third book to this trilogy!

Marion
The Johns: Sex for Sale and the Men Who Buy It by John Malarek

4
This is an eye-opening and brutal account of the globalization of human trafficking. Written at times from the john's point of view, it reveals an incredible indifference to the suffering of women and children. Why am I reading this? It's homework for a piece I'm doing on human trafficking. It's very explicit and detailed. I guess I didn't expect this movement to be this well organized.

Kara
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

5
A moving memoir of surviving and thriving while being raised by dysfunctional parents.

Mary Lou
Wilde Lake by Laura Lippman

4
This is a very good, complex mystery set in Columbia, MD, a suburb of Baltimore. Lu Brant is county prosecutor, as was her father before her. Lu grew up in Columbia with her dad and big brother AJ, and her life is built on secrets, lies of omission, cover ups and loving deceit. Lu is oblivious to it all, plowing ahead with her career and her life. She adores her brother and dad, and accepts what she’s told in her personal life. Laura Lippman writes a really good tale in this novel, with good character development and believable plot. The book gets a bit complex and obscure from time to time, but I really cared about Lu and her story, so I kept with it. Finished it in a day.

Karen
Commonwealth by Ann Patchett

5
Character development of two blended dysfunctional couples with 6 children between them. One of one couple enters an affair with policeman's wife; he becomes obsessed with after meeting her at her infant daughter's christening. They eventually marry, engendering a hatred of the parents by their 6 offspring. All children have very different and distinct personalities. The youngest, Albie, being instrumental in the oldest's, Cal's, death from a bee sting due to a very bad allergy. The Benedryl Cal kept to treat himself was fed to Albie to put him to sleep and keep him out of the other siblings' hair due to his childish, disruptive behavior. His birth at the height of the affair left him neglected, irresponsibly, by the parents.

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman

5
Yet another 5+star-rating book by Mr. Backman. Storytelling at its best, in so many ways. Not until I was several pages into the book did I realize it is (sort of) a fantasy while weaving in lives and circumstances of real characters. The relationship between the two main characters is heartwarming and precious. If you enjoyed A MAN CALLED OVE, you will doubly enjoy this book. (I rushed right out to buy his next book!)

Jane
Abducted by Dana Mentink

5
An inspirational suspense story that will grip you. You will hope over and over again Sarah and Jett can escape. Danger lurks in many ways. A painting stolen and wanted back by two evil men who will stop at nothing. Sarah tries to find something in evil men to have them show compassion to no avail. Jett sent by Marco of Sarah's family's Detective Agency to watch out for Sarah. Sarah had walked away from a relationship with him in high school. Romance, danger, God at work and so much more. As with all Dana's books, you will be encouraged.

Rufus Harms was guilty of the murder of a child while in the Army and has been in prison for 25 years. He receives a letter from the Army that brings back the memory of how the murder occurred. How contacts his attorney and this story takes off. It includes attorneys, family, the FBI and the Supreme Court. Bodies start piling up and you aren't sure who's responsible. This is a good read that includes a love story, complicated people and tears at the end.

Joyce
The Dollhouse by Fiona Davis

4
I love the time period of this book. Interesting characters as well.

Anita
After You by Jojo Moyes

5
This was a sequel to Ms. Moyes book, ME BEFORE YOU. It tells the story of Louisa (Will's caretaker and girlfriend). She is still struggling to get over what happened after almost two years. I thought this book was an excellent follow up, and very funny at times. I enjoyed it immensely.

4
A handsome rogue who charms women, dances the tango, and then steals jewels finds himself as a professional dance partner on a South American cruise ship. He meets a beautiful, rich, married woman whose path he will cross again during the Cold War and once again as both are aging people. The story starts in the glamorous 1930s and ends in 1990. Translated from Spanish, it is a rich novel that is also rather melancholy.

Another Inspector Erlendur novel that is translated from Icelandic. Erlendur, who is always haunted by lost people, is confronted, again, by the case of a teenager who left home decades ago for school and was never seen again. At the same time he is charged with finding the murderer of a local man who worked on the U.S. Air Force base and must have fallen from a very high place to end up with the trauma he suffered.

Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline

4
A story about a current day rebellious teen who is in the child welfare system. In working off community hours instead of being sent to juvenile hall, she meets an elderly woman who was sent west from NYC on the Orphan Train in 1929. The characters are well developed and the story is well told. I felt like I knew the girls and am so thankful that I did not have to experience what they did. My heart goes out to all the street children who were sent on those orphan trains to find new homes. It was a book I sat with in the shade on a summer's day and read and read. I did not want to put the book down.

A 40-ish CPA desperately wants the right husband (this time) and a baby. She meets a charming artist and falls in love. He insists that they spend a month in Morocco where he once lived. They arrive in a blistering hot village, and nothing is as it seems. Not the man. Not the trip. The writer does a good job of describing the Saharan country’s culture and beauty. A fast-paced thriller.

Ron
Kick by Paula Byrne

5
A fascinating, compelling portrait of Kathleen Kennedy, sister of John and Bobby, who died tragically in a plane crash at 28 years of age. She was the most vivacious of the five Kennedy girls and defied her parents by marrying into British royalty. The author is the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy.

The Nature of the Beast by Louise Penny

4
Chief Inspector Gamache has retired to the lovely village of Three Pines. He thought that he left evil and crime behind in Quebec. Instead he has found it in a hidden supergun and the killing of a little boy, which brings Gamache back to being the talented inspector. I love all Louise Penny books, but I felt like this one really needed editing. I would have enjoyed it more if the author/publisher had not denied the reader valid information sooner. It was about page 158 before the reader was told what the mysterious object hidden in the woods was. I was tempted more than once to just put the book down because I felt the readers were being played with.

Malice by Keigo Higashino

4
This #1 international bestseller murder mystery is a translated from Japanese. It is written unlike the usual mystery in that we know who committed the murder early in the story. The inexperienced detective pieces together the why of the murder by using all the clues, and that is the true mystery. It was a very interesting way of reading a murder mystery. The detective, the murderer, and the victim all had previous ties as early as middle-school when bullying set the stage for the events that would bring them together later in life.

Great read. The start of The Promise Falls Trilogy. Exciting and captivating. A lot of unexpected twists in this novel. Murder, family troubles, etc. A lot going on. Would recommend this book to all that love reading mysteries. Fast reading - you won't want to put it down.

Smooth Operator by Stuart Woods and Parnell Hall

Bridget Jones's Baby: The Diaries by Helen Fielding

3
This is a fun romp with our Bridget. It is like a beach read - in October. It is not great lit but it is entertaining and a bit long-winded like our Bridget. It bored me about 2/3 into the book, but the ending was satisfying so I forgave the lapse.

I always like Joseph Finder's books. I get his newsletter also. By showing my receipt I was eligible to receive a pencil shaped like a gavel.

Izella
Fates and Traitors by Jennifer Chiaverini

4
For those who love history, this book really brings out lots of information about Booth and his family and his co-conspirators that was unknown to most. I found it really interesting and I could hardly wait to get to the assassination even though I was familiar with the story. Chiaverini has written her usual, well-researched book.

Another rollicking adventure with the sex-crazed, funny characters that only Janet can create. Light, enjoyable reading for a Sunday afternoon.

Look Past by Eric Devine

5
Gritty, gutsy YA mystery featuring a most amazing protagonist who is transgender. The author does a stellar job of getting inside Avery's head to show what his thinking is like.

Ginny
Irina's Children by Tilar J. Mazzeo

5
This is an extraordinary true story about Irena Sendler, a fiery, intelligent and brave young woman who some have dubbed the female Oskar Schindler. She courageously entered the Warsaw Ghetto time and again and removed thousands of Jewish children to save them from inevitable death. Although small in stature she was large in heart and would take unimaginable risks with her life to save the lives of others. This in a incredible story and I can't believe I've never known about this part of WWII history.

The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain

5
This is a terrific read. I was engrossed in the story from start to finish. I, like the main character, was ambivalent about how the silent sister's life played out.

Natalie
Seveneves by Neal Stephenson

4
Not your average sci-fi book. Stephenson present us with a normal world that turns to chaos in a blink of an eye. Without explanation the moon has burst into pieces that changes everything. Scientists quickly conclude that the Earth will be destroyed by the crumbling remains of the moon within a couple of years. So the race is on to expand and populate a floating outpost in space similar to the International Space Station. The story follows the process of who goes, what do they take with them and how to plan for eternity in space. The problems and possibilities are as endless as space itself.

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

5

The Book That Matters Most by Ann Hood

4
Among several things, this showed how a book club can bring different people together yet find a common bond. I found the way they selected the book by using the instruction of the book that mattered to you the most an interesting idea. Also this book club brought people of different backgrounds together, which made for interesting discussion.

Enemy of the Tates by Nic Saint

1
I freely chose to review this ARC. The Tates were rising stars in Hollywood, well at least Cleo was riding high in the clouds while Mark's career was slowly going down the toilet, but their agent assured him he'd bounce back soon. Cleo was shopping in downtown LA and as she strode to her car she saw a man was in the driver's seat who resembled her husband, but he wasn't Mark. As she opened her door to see what he was up to, he fell out the door dead as a door nob, but then Mark stepped up behind her and suddenly the police accused her of killing the look-alike! Mark Tate's career was so far down in the dungeon that he needed a ladder to claim out, but his agent told him to be patient as his star would rise again but he wasn't sure...

Suzanne
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

5
Really enjoyed this novel. It is so different from what I normally read. It is like a biography of a life, a death, a friendship, a neighborhood, old friends, new friends. Wonderfully written and I was always anxious to get back to it after I had laid it down for a while to get some work done. I have started his second book, MY GRANDMOTHER SAID TO TELL YOU SHE'S SORRY, and am looking forward to it. Great reading here by this author. And I think there might be a movie out of the first one, A MAN CALLED OVE.

Terry
Sorrow Road by Julia Keller

4
SORROW ROAD is a mystery/thriller. Excellent atmospheric tone, a small town in West Virginia in the middle of a snow storm. Well-developed characters who are relatable and one mistake when the men were young that has come back to haunt them now when they are old. Packed with action and ample suspense. This is one "mighty fine" book.

Linda
All is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker

5
An excellent and thought-provoking novel. Great for book clubs!

Deborah
Bettyville by George Hodgman

5
A very different book than I would normally read, however, I enjoyed it tremendously. Betty is the mother who is in need of care due to her age. Her son, who is gay and has lost his job as a well respected writer from Manhattan has come to the small town in Missouri to care for her. The story has comedy and sadness, in addition to a bit of nostalgia of being home again in a small town. Recommended read.

Slender Wish by Kerry Casey

This is the third book in the series and all have been awesome. Once you start reading you just don't want to put the book down. There are so many twists and turns that you just want to keep reading.

Wonder by R. J. Palacio

5
This is a beautiful book about 10-year-old Auggie, who was born with a severe facial deformity. After previously being home schooled, he is ready to start fifth grade in a regular school. While showing how various students react to Auggie, the book explores the themes of bullying, love, kindness, and acceptance of those with differences. The book is told through both Auggie's voice and the voices of other students he comes in contact with. It's definitely a worthwhile read for people of all ages. A movie version of the book starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, and the young boy who starred in "Room" will be coming out in the spring.

The Seven Year Dress by Paulette Mahurin

5
A wonderful story of WW II. This is a true story told by the survivor, Helen Stein. She spent seven years hiding from the Nazis and surviving Auschwitz. It tells of the atrocities and fears she survived. I highly recommend this book.

Pauline
The Day Diana Died by Christopher Andersen

5
Christopher Andersen has written an account of the days and hours leading up to the fatal accident that took the life of Diana, the Princess of Wales. He presents the different view points of what happened. I found the reaction of Prince Charles to news of her death most interesting. The coolness of the Queen seemed strange though enlightening. He makes you think how she might have saved herself. He puts to rest various persistent rumors such was she the victim of a murder plot? Was she pregnant at the time? She still shines with beauty, grace, heartache and compassion.

Debra Caruso
Reuben, Reuben by Peter De Vries

5
This book is unlike anything I have ever read. Funny, interesting, kept me wanting to read it. I am totally delighted by this read.

Esther
Death by Cyanide by Paula Reed Ward

3
This is a non-fiction account of husband convicted of killing his wife using cyanide. I found the style somewhat dry and more like a news story. Would have liked detail on how the prosecution and defense developed their strategies for their cases. Still an interesting read for those who like true crime stories.

Tessa B C
A Deadly Cliche by Ellery Adams

3
I like this series. I like Olivia’s independence and “get on with it” attitude. Her relationships with the town’s residents are developing nicely in this second installment. She is definitely beginning to open up to the possibility of love and affection in her life. I thought the reveal was a little over-the-top, but I was still sufficiently entertained. I’ll keep reading this series.

Night Watch by Iris and Roy Johansen

4
The 4th book in the Kendra Michaels series. I really enjoy this series, I really like Kendra and Adam Lynch. This book introduces Jessie Mercado, a sassy PI. I hope we see more of her in future books. Kendra was born blind and in this book we learn more about the doctor and the medical procedure that gave her back her sight. Because of her blindness she developed her other senses to hyper-awareness; it's always interesting what she sees that no one else does. If you like Iris Johansen's Eve Duncan series you will like these books!

Doctored Evidence by Donna Leon

4
Once again, Commisario Brunetti senses that Lieutenant Scarpa has not examined all the evidence concerning the murder of a most-disliked old woman -- one who has annoyed all the neighbors and disgusts even the doctor who must visit her on a weekly basis. Accusing the woman who has been caring for her and pursuing her to her death, Scarpa considered the case closed. And even when another person comes forward with evidence that said caregiver could not be guilty of the crime, he chooses to not believe her.

Good debut novel tells the story of Nadia and Luke who met when she was 17 and he was 21. Nadia has just lost her mother and something happens that they keep a secret for which they pay for as the years go by.

The Secret Chord by Geraldine Brooks

5
Another beautifully-written book by Geraldine Brooks. Each of her books takes you into the world about which she is writing and carries you through the story. You learn, you love, you ache throughout.

P.K.
Hot Pursuit by Stuart Woods

3
I've only recently discovered Stuart Woods' Stone Barrington series. I really like the series so l am sorry to have to say I was disappointed in this installment. I felt the book focused too much on non-Stone characters, airplane technology, and the excesses of the rich. The two main storylines were thin and resolved too abruptly.

Florence
Missing by James Patterson

3
Patterson is writing the same book with different authors. That's not to say they are not fun to read; however, the formula is getting old in the "Private" series. His Alex Cross novels are quite different in that you know the characters quite well by now. By my account, his grandmother is about 110 years old, but who's counting. I think his Michael Bennett series has "Private" beat.

Karen

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

4
Wonderful story of a man who tries to shut himself off from the world after the death of his wife. His solitary life changes when a baby is left on the floor of the bookstore he owns. As he moves on with his life, he becomes interested in a publisher's saleswoman. Truly a story of love, loss and the true meaning of friendship and families.

Shelley Thompson
Woman of God by James Patterson

5
WOMAN OF GOD is jam-packed with the life experiences of Brigid Fitzgerald. She is humble, educated, driven, and filled with empathy for her fellow mankind. The details and action in Africa and Italy are so spot-on that I had to double check that this was a fiction book. The storytelling brings you directing into the action, and at times it was difficult to put the book down. By the end of the book, I was torn between wondering how Brigid could go on with so many onslaughts of misery, and reveling in how she actually does deal with it all. She's amazing. I hope there are really people like this in the world!

Jeane Campbell
Five, Six, Seven, Nate! (Better Nate Than Ever, #2) by Tim Federle

4
The sequel to BETTER NATE THAN EVER, all budding young theater lovers will like this followup. Would think most middle-schoolers will enjoy both titles. Nate is in rehearsals for the theater production of E.T.: The Broadway Musical and it's not all that he thought it would be. Received the Lambda Literary Award for LGBT Children's/Young Adult (2015).

I have discovered a favorite new author. Tana French is first-class. Set in Ireland, this author transports the reader to a setting unfamiliar, yet all too real.

Ross Poldark by Winston Graham

5
It seems like I have been reading a lot of books lately set in other countries. This novel is the first in a 12-book series set in Cornwall, England. If the rest of the series is as good, I will be reading a lot about England in the 18th and 19th century in the near future.

The Lost Boy by Camilla Lackberg

5
I am currently reading THE STONE CUTTER by this author. I should have read it prior to reading THE LOST BOY. Even though the plot is different, the characters stories are continuing in time. Thus, THE STONE CUTTER should have been read first. The author is topnotch and the books are difficult to put down. Highly commend this Swedish author.

Helen
What You See by Hank Phillippi Ryan

4
Excellent mystery. Terrific plot lines and the fabulous Jane Ryland returns. The author manages to have a amazing, twisting plot line move into another plot line while having a personal family crisis going on at the same time. I was intrigued from the get go. Great book.

Linda
The Twenty-Three by Linwood Barclay

5
Answers the question of why all bad things that happened in Promise Falls, NY pointed at the number twenty-three. This book is extremely fast-paced and keeps you turning pages right from page one. The ending will definitely surprise you and make you think about what one might do when pushed up to the end of what one is able to handle.

Diana Trabanco
The Portable Veblan by Elizabeth McKenzie

This book was so quirky and different that I can't even imagine how the author came up with it. It has talking squirrels, Norwegian philosophers, traumatic brain injury devices and some wacky characters. It sounds like it would be a hot mess, but it isn't. It is funny, sad, annoying and fascinating all at the same time. You can't figure out where it is going, but you want to be on the journey to the end and it doesn't disappoint.

An interesting look into the lives of some very colorful folks!

Phyllis
The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney

4
The dysfunctional family consisting of Beatrice, Jack, Melody and Leo Plumb are all waiting for the joint trust fund, "the nest", to find their true financial happiness! Needless to say their intricate relationships get in the way of life, but make for an interesting and easy read.

Just One Look by Harlan Coben

4
Grace, a wife and mother, picks up photos that have been developed from a family outing. There is a mix in the batch that appears to be about 20 years old and is of a group she doesn't recognize, except one who could be her husband. When she questions him, he leaves the house and doesn't return. She tries to find answers and discovers that others in the photo have mysteriously died or disappeared. The twists and turns of this story keep you guessing until the end.

Rushing Waters by Danielle Steel

3
I choose this audiobook while a hurricane was raging on the east coast, which was purely coincidental. The book is not really great but not really bad. Ms. Steel writes what I call basic fiction and would be pleasing to most. I think I have read too many books, but I now like something with more substance to the story. The dangers that one encounters during the storm and the relationships of the characters are the main plot. I would recommend it if you like Ms. Steel's stories.

Dark Wolf Adrift by Aimee Easterling

5
DARK WOLF ADRIFT backs up to show Hunter Green's previous life as a Special Ops member while he lived under the radar in a human world. He signed up again as he was good at sniffing out bombs for the Navy, but when an underwater mission forced him to shift in front of his friend when he had no choice but to fight a shark that was interested in his bleeding friend, he knew from the look in his partner's eyes that they would never have the same relationship of their past, even though he'd saved both of them from being shark food. Then, he took a detour that would show him his mate, but before he could get close enough she drove away and he didn't know her name.

Another "in death" novel -- they NEVER disappoint!

Margie
Collecting the Dead by Spencer Kope

5
This debut thriller is well worth your time. Kope's protagonist is Magnus "Steps" Craig, who works for the FBI as a tracker. Steps is known as the Human Bloodhound because of a unique and secret (to all but a few) ability which is revealed as the action unfurls. The cases are fascinating, Cope's writing stye is accessible and intriguing, and Steps is an appealing, though haunted, character. One can only hope this is just the beginning of a long series.

Becoming Queen Victoria by Kate Williams

4
I love books on Queen Victoria, mainly due to the fact that they really remove the myths about her. My four-star rating on this book, however, is due to all of the information on Princess Charlotte and finding out how her death and the life of Queen Victoria were linked. I really wonder now if Princess Charlotte hadn't died if the girl who would become Queen Victoria would have ever been born since none of George IV's brothers seemed inclined to marry or have legitimate children until disaster struck, and Princess Charlotte died in childbirth along with her son. I really enjoyed this book.

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

5
Plot is intricate, revelatory, and ultimately satisfying. You care about the characters. The writing sucks you in so that you are totally immersed in the story. Not for the faint of heart, though -- it can be very brutal in places. All in all, an amazing read. I hope he writes another book soon!

Jimmy the Stick by Michael Mayo

3
Jimmy Quinn is a likable owner of a speak-easy during prohibition. Jimmy had an injury which requires the use of a cane, thus "Jimmy the Stick' which he uses as a weapon. One of Jimmy's gangland connections asks him to protect his wife and baby son while he goes off on business. The Lindbergh kidnapping had just occurred. While at the house of his friend, Jimmy runs into a lot of sleazy characters, as would be expected. Lots of confrontations and surprises. Good reading.

Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly

4
This book takes place during and after WWII, and tells us about three women who are very involved with the war and its aftermath. Caroline lives in NYC but is very involved with a handsome French man. Kasia is a young girl in Poland who helped with the underground, but she is apprehended and put in Ravensbruck, which is a concentration camp for women. Gerta is a young German doctor who becomes a doctor at Ravensbruck. The lives of these women collide in some serious ways. I enjoyed the book a lot, but I thought that, at almost 500 pages, it was way too long. This is Kelly's first novel.

Pretending to Dance by Diane Chamberlain

4
The main character, Molly, is trying to adopt a child with her husband. She has to deal with her own past, which involves her relationships with her birth mother, adopted mother, the death of her beloved father with MS, and a friend who introduces her to older boys, sex and drugs.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

5
Great murder mystery. I feel that it is loosely based on the classic, "Rear Window". I just saw the movie and feel that it was very faithful to the book. Highly recommend.

Linda
Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley

5
OH! MY! GOSH! I loved this book. I had no idea what to expect. Lily is Ted's much loved dachshund. As any animal lover knows, the pet often substitutes for a child. The relationship has many similarities, especially if it is just the two in the family. Unfortunately, dog years are accelerated compared to those of the human companion resulting in a grief so vast, logic might suggest we not enter into such a union again. Instead, people owned by pets usually seek another relationship to salve the broken heart. This book fosters the range of emotions experienced by anyone who has loved and lost a pet.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

CITY OF BONES is a young adult science fiction book. Clary’s mom is kidnapped and she find out about a whole new world full of werewolves, vampires, demons and shadow hunters. It was an interesting read if you feel like escaping into a fantasy world.

Sweet Salt Air by Barbara Delinsky

4
SWEET SALT AIR is a wonderful story of friendship, new love and finding our way through life's difficult situations. I've been a Barbara Delinsky fan since THREE WISHES came out about twenty years ago, and like all of her books that I've read, this one did not disappoint. Charlotte and Nicole drew me in from the beginning, and as their story unraveled it was clear that it was a special friendship that could pick up after ten years for a common goal and weather such a big bump in the road. I was so glad that Leo's character evolved into someone with so many layers. It'd also be great if the cookbook was a real thing...so many wonderful recipes. All in all a lovely story!

ELEANOR
Far From True by Linwood Barclay

5
This is the second book in the Promise Falls Trilogy. Had to hurry up and read it to see what was going to happen in this book. Does Sam lose her son Carl? The secrets that come out after the drive-in screen crashes down. Who was in the convertible? Was it Adam and his wife Miriam????? Who killed Olivia and Rosemary - was it the doctor???? What does the number 23 mean. It just keeps popping up in nasty ways. I would recommend this whole series to anyone who is interested in mystery/thriller novels. Can't wait to read THE TWENTY-THREE, the third book in the series.

Margaret
Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

5
Jodi Picoult must have put in lots of time on research in order to write this sensitive novel. Her comments at the end of the story are almost as important as the novel itself. The subject is racism in America. This novel is also about hospitals, labor and delivery nurses, tragedy, white supremacists, the judicial system, and family relationships. The author has many well-developed main characters who carry the novel, but some of her secondary characters are significant to the story as well. I think this novel will be discussed for a long time. It's about a subject that affects all of us, one way or another. I highly recommend it with 5 stars.

Jan
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

5
This book was published in 1938 and is still a great read today. It is the story of a widower who marries a young unschooled girl who is unsophisticated. This is the only flaw in reading the book today. The second wife is a nothing. She returns to the family home and is treated poorly and smugly by some of the staff. He is lost in his own world at times but the words are still there to put fear into the reader. We know what something awful has happened and something awful is going to happen. I was surprised at how well the plot stood up. If you have not read this mystery, you should. It is well written and a joy to be entertained so well.

I loved this book! It really made me take a step outside myself and view the way in which I interact with all people I come into contact with. Thought-provoking, heartfelt and satisfying story that dares to look at the race issue in the U.S.

IQ by Joe Ide

5
This book is a fast-paced, entertaining debut novel for Joe Ide. Isaiah Quintabe is an unlicensed, underground detective who solves problems for the disenfranchised. His brilliant mind (hence the name IQ) helps him to develop a reputation as an expert problem solver. You'll love this book and hope Joe Ide is a fast writer and can get the sequel out quickly.

Once Upon a River by Bonnie Jo Campbell

3
I hardly know what to write about this novel. Very early on I was disturbed by Margo and the adults around her. I wanted to hug her and keep her safe and warm. And then I wanted to shake her till her teeth rattled. And yet … she is a compelling character and I couldn’t just turn away from her. Still, this is no HUCKLEBERRY FINN. Twain’s central character had a certain innocence about him, which Margo seems to lack.

Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris

5
Grace is a beautiful woman, who works hard and helps support her sister, Millie who has Down syndrome. She goes to a special school and is seventeen years old. One day while in the park she meets Jack who is handsome, a very successful attorney. He represents battered women and has never lost a case. Their courtship is brief and before you know it they are married. Grace never thought she would find "the perfect husband", especially knowing that someday Millie might live with them. Most of her boyfriends had always felt uncomfortable with the situation and so their relationships seemed to end. Jack is fine with it and even was the one who first came over to Millie in the park. What goes on "behind closed doors" is shocking and frightening.

The Singles Game by Lauren Weisberger

4
This is an interesting look at professional women's tennis through the story of Charlie, a mid-twenties player recovering after an injury. It shows that a professional player's life is mostly practice, working out, travel and tournaments. Charlie has her wins and her mistakes as she goes after a Grand Slam win. It is a good light read.

Jack and Grace live a life of perfection to the outside world, but their reality was a marriage filled with terror. We know dysfunction exists but this is to the extreme. Once you start reading this book you won't want to put it down.

Sandra
Boy, 9, Missing by Nic Joseph

2
The story tries very hard to be a psychological one but it doesn't live up to the plot. There were too many extras that convoluted the main mystery of a 9-year-old found dead in a bathtub of water, while a dinner party was going on that night. As a reader, I lost interest.

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

5
This book was a really good read. It accurately represents many facets of high school life -- the good, bad and ugly. Having grown up in a dysfunctional, abusive household myself some aspects of Eleanor's life were all too real. Two big thumbs up.

Great historical fiction. The author's language beautifully portrays the island of St. Thomas and Paris in the 1800s.

Commonwealth by Ann Patchett

3
I've really enjoyed Patchett's previous novels, especially THE PATRON SAINT OF LIARS and BEL CANTO. That said, I was underwhelmed by COMMONWEALTH. It was okay but I have a feeling by next week I won't remember anything about it.

You Will Not Have My Hate by Antoine Leiris

3
This is a very slight book, more a long essay, about the days following the terrorist attacks in Paris last November. Leiris' wife was one of the victims and this book tells how he copes.

Brenda
Lab Girl by Hope Jahren

5
This library book called my name and invited me to dive into science. Science is asking questions about the world around us and then trying to discover the answers. The science of is plant science or geobiology. Most of the book deals with two themes: work and love. Most of the "love" theme is dealing with agape love, not romantic love. The book was amazing to me because Ms. Jahren allows the reader to see her totally in 3-D; flaws, strengths, and totally human. Because of Ms. Jahren I will never look at a tree the same way again. I will also try and plant some trees. "Science has taught me that everything is more complicated than we first assume, that being able to derive happiness from discovery is a recipe for a beautiful life."

The Last Town (Wayward Pines Trilogy, Book 3) by Blake Crouch

The most suspenseful of the Wayward Pines trilogy so far! Kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page. Great characters, plenty of nail-biting suspense and those "abbies." Wow! Loved it!

Messiah by J. E. Taylor

I freely chose to review this ARC on my own and I was captured from the very first chapter! Colonel Matt Robbins captured an alien pod that wandered into the Earth's Galaxy and he was leery of what he'd find. He was unprepared for the stench that assaulted his nose as he stepped inside the pod. At first he thought the pod was empty until something moved in the waste. Andre was exiled because of his eye color when the Emperor killed his mom and dad and sent him to die in space when he was only six years old. He never had a chance to go to school or make friends as they never stayed anywhere long enough, but after years of dreaming to some how be saved, he was unsure that the man standing inside his pod wasn't a dream too.

This is a delightful Hanne Wilhelmsen mystery. Hanne is a police detective in Oslo and realizes that serial murders are occurring. Along the way, there is a violent rape of a med student. The rape affects the student and her father.

Patricia Miller
Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris

4
This was a really good read...and I found myself speeding through it! It truly kept building all throughout the book, so that I couldn't wait to see how everything turned out. I guess my only criticism would be that sometimes it was hard to believe that Jack was SO able to completely convince everyone else in the world that she was not to be believed. That seemed like maybe a bit of a stretch. Anyway, it was still very enjoyable.

Mothers Tell Your Daughters: Stories by Bonnie Jo Campbell

2
2.5 stars. I think it was a mistake to read/listen to Campbell’s novel ONCE UPON A RIVER back-to-back with this collection of short stories. I can take only so much distress, so much sexual tension and acting out, so much of watching women make bad choice after bad choice after even worse choice. There were a few stories that were humorous or touching, but most were distressingly dismal and depressing.

Paris For One and Other Stories by Jojo Moyes

4
Jojo Moyes' newest book is a collection of nine short stories, all portraying strong women as the lead character. The first and longest story, Paris For One, is reminiscent of ME BEFORE YOU. The main character, Nell, is a twenty-six-year-old who has never been to Paris. She invites her jerk of a boyfriend, who does not respond to her texts before she boards the train from England to Paris. Alone in a foreign country, not speaking the language, Nell has the adventure of her life, finding love along the way. One of my favorite stories is Between the Tweets, as Moyes spins a tale with an ending that would make Edgar Allan Poe smile. Very entertaining and good for book group discussion!

The Friendship Riddle by Megan Frazer Blakemore

4
THE FRIENDSHIP RIDDLE is about a 6th grade girl who finds herself on a quest - first alone, then with pals. There are clues to solve, and even some spelling. The story accurately depicts the emotional ups and downs of the tween set. An easy read that doesn't get boring or predictable.
