Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty

5
This delightfully scary middle to upper grade reader has some real family values as well as a likeable heroine and a complimentary cast of clearly drawn characters. The plot is satisfying, easy to follow and challenging to solve. The real Biltmore House and surrounding estate and the Pisgah National Forest are supporting characters. If a visit to Ashville is in the future, this book is a great way to generate interest in the history, fixtures and furnishings of the house. (The horse stable is now a restaurant!) The importance of family, to do what is right and defend the helpless are the ethics that Serafina embodies.

Gloria
The Last Painting of Sara de Vos by Dominic Smith

5
Wonderful read, especially if you appreciate and love art.

LINDA
Hunter, Hunted (Book 1) by Ashley Meira

5
I was given this ARC in return for an honest review. Take a talking cat, a talented witch and hunter for monsters on light duty, mix in a murder, and a traitor and you have one great book! Morgan Maxwell was kicked out by her dad and given to Lady Cassandra to raise when her mom died. No answers as to why didn't he want her came from either adult. Now all grown up Morgan is accused of murdering six demons and now Heaven and Hell want answers and her death.

Most Wanted by Lisa Scottoline

Try to imagine your thoughts when you see a photo on the television that looks exactly like the one given you of the sperm donor with whom you are presently pregnant. Your marriage is under attack as you desperately try to find the truth. It is really a thriller and twisted tale that keeps you wondering, "What would you do?"

Unknown Means by Elizabeth Becka

5
I love the "realness" of the characters of this book. It shows how well they do their jobs in spite of their insecurities and problems.

Laurie
A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler

5
This is a wonderful book. Laugh out loud funny at times. Loved it!

A Room Full of Bones (Ruth Galloway Mystery #4) by Elly Griffiths

3
Ruth, a forensic archaeologist, is to supervise the opening of a medieval bishop's coffin. Upon arrival at the Smith Museum, she discovers the curator lying dead beside the coffin. That's just one mystery to be solved. Racehorses, snakes, drugs, curses, Aborigine skulls(!) all figure in this startling story.

LINDA
The Tomb (A Maxine Decker Thriller: Book 3) by Lynn Sholes and Joe Moore

5
I won this book and agreed to give it an honest review and wish I'd read the other books! Retired OSI agent Maxine Decker loved tracking down stolen art, but now she's on a deadly mission to prevent the assassination of a Supreme Court Justice! This was after she captured the world's most wanted drug lord and now she's on the cartel's hit list!

A Moment to Cherish by Jennifer Faye

4
If you read any of Ms.Faye's books in the Whistle Stop collection then you will truly enjoy this one. Once again we are introduced to some special characters in the book. Bella Nez has lived here for as long as she can remember and although some of her memories are ones she would rather forget, she does love the people, especially Mason Noble who she had recently been engaged to. Mason has declared his candidacy for Mayor of the town and Bella is afraid her past will ruin his chances for winning. Mason and Bella seemed like the perfect couple, but with all the time he has been spending at work and on his campaign Bella feels that his new commitment is not something she wants to be part of.

Deborah
Bad Little Falls by Paul Doiron

4
I'm a fan of C. J. Box's books about game warden Joe Pickett, so when I discovered Maine game warden Mike Bowditch in books by Paul Doiron, I immediately started reading the series. I just finished book three, BAD LITTLE FALLS. Mike is a new, young game warden and he seems to have a knack for getting into trouble, thwarting directions from his superiors, and generally messing up his career while somehow solving crimes in the rural parts of Maine. At times, I find Mike's knack for getting himself into trouble almost painful and find myself wondering "what was he thinking", but I'm drawn into the stories and end up hoping that Mike comes out alive and with his career somehow back on track.

4
Nice, short story with humor.

Lost and Gone Forever (Scotland Yard Murder Squad #5) by Alex Grecian

4
Saucy Jack is back, continuing his wicked puppetry of Walter Day. Although this is #5, I was still thoroughly engrossed in the plot and the parade of characters. The characters I knew are evolving and one even left me with a bit of a surprise twist (unexpected). Jack and his ingenuity and ruthless ways never ceases to amaze me. I'm a little undecided about the Day character but we'll see where he is heading. If you've enjoyed Neville Hammersmith, he's fully aboard in this edition. There are some new characters, some plot meandering and hopefully #6 will come along and continue the series of escapades.

A Thousand Naked Strangers: A Paramedic's Wild Ride to the Edge and Back by Kevin Hazzard

4
This is a subject I know nothing about - I have never needed an EMT (thank goodness) so this world is totally foreign to me. I found (most of) it fascinating! Some of the strange calls an EMT can get. There were a few off-subject tangents (like hospital politics, EMT classes) that dragged a little but for the most part, I was riveted to this book. It makes you appreciate your health!

Bonnie
Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

4
Haruf doesn't disappoint and this novel is one of his best.

Bonnie
Siracusa by Delia Ephron

5
Ephron's novel is told from several points of view and each is compelling. This book grabs you and doesn't let you go until the end.

Bonnie
I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

3
I enjoyed this novel more than I expected to. It's somewhat young adult in theme with some magical realism thrown in, but all-in-all a quick, entertaining read.

Rosa
All the Time in the World by Caroline Angell

5
This is an impressive debut novel. Charlotte is a young composer who becomes part of the McLean family when she is hired to be the babysitter of the two boys, Matt and George. The parents, Scotty and Gretchen, are wealthy Manhattanites, living on the Upper East Side. A tragic accident leaves the boys motherless, and Charlotte is left to face the challenges of grief and loss with Scotty and his sons. Told from Charlotte's perspective, the story goes back and forth in time, before and after Charlotte's death, and the storytelling is brilliant. I was sucked in from the start and fell in love with Matt and George, just like Charlotte.

Harriet
Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler

3
A disappointment. I usually enjoy Anne Tyler, but this is not one of her best. Most of the characters were not well developed and not nearly as interesting as Tyler's usually are. It falls short as a modern day telling of "Kiss Me, Kate."

KC
Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris

5
By far one the best book of 2016 for me. I was only about 30% into the book when I had my first OMG moment. A domestic psychological thriller with such surprises in store for its readers that I plowed through just to get to the ending. Bravo.

Marsha
The Bridge Ladies by Betsy Lerner

5
I loved this book. I was hooked from page one. I felt like I really knew the characters. The story was great.

Nancy J
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

2
I was not at all impressed with this offering. The characters were flat and the story, while uniquely crafted with the converging timeline, was bland. Maybe the movie will be better.

Marion
Rogue Lawyer by John Grisham

3
Kind of boring. It is a couple of short stories instead of one big thriller.

Evelyn
Food with Friends: The Art of Simple Gatherings by Leela Cyd

4
I read cookbooks like novels and this one was a great read. Ms. Cyd includes a story with every recipe. The photographs are lovely in full color and quite a few of them. There are a number of the recipes I can see myself trying and the possibility of them becoming regulars for my family. Examples would be special additions to oatmeal, an everything breakfast board, and red cauliflower hummus. That said, I couldn't give the five stars as in my opinion, the "simple" in the title is a little deceiving, as many of the tips and recipes have difficult to find ingredients - at least in my rural area. Examples of this would be a German mustard in a tube and Tunisian chili paste. The book is great for foodies who enjoy reading cookbooks - like me.

Linda
The Making of Donald Trump by David Cay Johnston

4
I chose this book because I was familiar with David Cay Johnston's work since I'd read an earlier work of his. I went into the book thinking that Johnston would give an unbiased opinion of The Donald. Having finished the book, I'm not sure that I still think Johnston is unbiased, but his prejudices align with mine. The book is brief but damning about 30 years of Trump's litigious, criminal, and immoral behavior. Much of the information contained in this book I had read previously in other places. It should not have come as a surprise that Donald Trump has two mottos, "Always get even" and "Hit harder." I'll be sure to stay out of his way.

Melissa
The Girl from the Sea by Shalini Boland

5
This book was a gripping psychological drama that I did not want to put down. The writing was excellent and I never saw the ending coming! I highly recommend!

Linda
The Shark by Mary Burton

5
The book begins with a hunt in the woods for a man suspected of using runaways for prostitution. Just how this chase connects with Virginia State Trooper Riley Tatum's past unfolds slowly like a flower opening. The story follows with a murder of a runaway, which brings back memories of something that happened in the trooper's past life. This book holds you you from start to finish. Get ready for surprises!

Tessa B C
Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

3
3.5*** Eleanor is the new kid – and target – at school; Park is a quiet loner who prefers listening to his music tapes and reading comics. Eleanor winds up sitting next to Park on the bus and slowly they begin to notice the value in one another. I can certainly see where the target audience would love it (as my niece did). But for me it’s just a little better than average. Fair warning: there is some very vulgar language in the book.

Marcia
Leave Me by Gayle Forman

4
(I received this book as an Advanced Reading Copy.) I could identify with working mom, Maribeth, the main character. In her early 40s, she has a heart attack resulting in surgery. She expects her husband to step up and help her. Too soon, she's again saddled with the responsibility of the twins, house, work, etc. One day she walks away from it all. It's like a woman's "finding oneself" book. She meets interesting new friends during her sabbatical from her marriage. Another storyline is the fact that she is adopted. Does she really want to find her birth mother? It was a fast read and enjoyable.

Sharon
Death of a Crafty Knitter by Angela Pepper

Quick read.

Sharon
The Lanvin Murders by Angela M. Sanders

3
A fur coat, a key in the lining, old "entertainers" and a vintage clothing shop. What could go wrong other than an ex-husband and a murderous style...

Sharon
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

4
Very well written but difficult to read because of the strong emotional response I had. WWII and the Holocaust are not easy topics to address, but this story shows the plight of the French during that era. Tears, sadness, joy, hope fear -- a full range of emotions were evoked as I read.

kristine metoyer
Kill Switch by Neal Baer and Jonathan Greene

5
Digging into this book, I finally had to read the author synopsis. No surprise why I am attracted to this storyline. I watch many crime and detective shows, including the Law and Order they assisted in producing. The flow of this book and the characters intertwine fantastically. I really was hooked and looked forward to picking up the book again. If you like crime and detective stories, this book is one to add to your library of books to read.

Patricia Lewis
Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler

4
This is an interesting story about a family of two girls and their scientist father. The younger sister is precocious and pretty. The other has cared for the three after their mother left. The story revolves around a situation where the father has a famous foreign scientist working with him...but his visa is about to expire on the cusp of what they hope us a wonderful scientific discovery. The daughter is asked to marry this man "just so he can stay and continue the work". I enjoyed this book very much.

Betty
The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith

4
The second in the Cormoran Strike series and just as strong as THE CUCKOO'S CALLING.

Nicolette
Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon

3
Wow, almost a year later I made it through the second Outlander novel. This one was thick in the middle with political (uninteresting to me) content. Although I was determined to keep coming back to it, I put this book down more than a few times. But...I've heard that the story only gets better from here on out. I have the next two novels on my to-read shelf at home and once I have forgotten how much it took to get through this one, I will tread on with the highlanders.

The blub on the cover attributed to Lee Child reads, "Suspenseful, sensitive, sexy, subtle." Who could argue with the best writer out there. He says it best.

Syrena
LaRose by Louise Erdrich

4
Great characters. Subtle yet moving.

JEAN
An Unlikely Daddy by Rachel Lee

5
This book was an unusual but beautiful story which was hard to put down. A CIA operator is friends with the husband of a widow who is expecting a baby. Trials, secrets, and lots of human experiences make for a good book.

Lori
See Me by Nicholas Sparks

5
Loved this all the way to the end! This was a different writing for me by Mr. Sparks, more on the romantic mystery side, a nice surprise. I loved the characters. It gave a really good insight into Colin on what he had been through and turned his life around. It makes you not to be too quick to judge when you don't know what has caused people to be how they are. Loved the setting in Wilmington - one of my favorite places. Read this in two days!

Karen
Marlene by C. W. Gortner

4
I received this book in the Summer reading contest. I have read this author before and enjoyed his books, and this was another great read. I knew nothing about Marlene Dietrich before reading this and reading about her life growing up and during World War II was captivating. If you enjoy historical fiction as I do you will like this book.

Linda
I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh

5
Best psychological thriller ever! I never saw the twist coming!

Gina
Everything I Don't Remember by Jonas Hassen Khemiri

1
This book won the most prestigious literary honor in Sweden so I thought it would be an interesting read. It was maddening. It was a perfect storm of lots of foreign names and lots of conversations about a "mystery" (used loosely here) about the death of Samuel. Let me add that it was not clear who was talking when the characters were giving a viewpoint on Samuel's death. Reminded me of Henry James' WINGS OF THE DOVE in which something is going on... but what that is was a mystery to me. It was a difficult book to decipher and only intrepid souls like your writer should slog through it. You should read something/anything else.

Dorothy Flood
Moment of Truth by Lisa Scottoline

5
Jack Newlin, a very successful lawyer married to a very wealthy woman, came home to find her murdered. He was sure their daughter was responsible. Thus, to save her he confessed to the murder. Did she do it or did her boyfriend? You'll enjoy, as with all her books, a surprise ending. I couldn't put it down.

Linda
Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

4
I put off reading this for a long time, not wanting it to lessen in any way my appreciation of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. But I finally had to read it. I can't believe it was written so long ago. I thought it was wonderful. Harper Lee was able to capture the essence of Scout and relay it to the reader. Wonderfully written.

Debbie
The Cantaloupe Thief by Deb Richardson-Moore

4
I surprisingly enjoyed this novel set in Georgia. Deb Richardson-Moore employs all her journalistic training to present a story rich in memories and poignant on the issue of the homeless. Branigan Powers emerges as an exemplary journalist turned detective. Branigan exercises and eats fruits and vegetables and does not smoke, but she enjoys an occasional wine. I detest retelling the story and giving away clues as to the identity of the killer. The story alternates among Branigan, Malachi Martin, a homeless man, and a recounting of a murder 10 years ago. The story flows as gently as a lazy summer stream that suddenly surges into a battering rapids. The setting is concise, but establishes a vivid picture in your mind of the murder scene.

Death, Taxes, and a Satin Garter by Diane Kelly

5
I was gifted this book by the author with no strings attached. Book 10 starts with Tara Holloway, Special Agent with the IRS, is intent on getting Flo Cash caught for cheating Uncle Sam out of possibly hundreds of dollars, but Flo has quieted her donors to her radio station and Tara has to come up with a way to loosen their tongues. Tara is obsessed with catching Flo with her pants down while she plans her best friend's bachelorette party. One thing you don't want to do is tick off this five foot two agent!!

Suspenseful easy read thriller about spousal abuse.

What Lifts You - Uplifting Designs to Color & Create by Kelsey Montague

5
This coloring book's impressive pages are printed on very high-quality paper. That was the first thing I noticed even before looking at the complex, inspirational designs. This interactive coloring book is divided into three sections: (1) Share Your Dreams where you can fill out the questions, (2) What's Missing where you can add your own art, and (3) Art Section where you can color pages that can be used as frames, masks, crowns, etc. There are pages of toucans that can be used as origami paper. This book will keep me busy for months! I feel it's the Cadillac of coloring books! I received a copy of this book from The Reading Room in exchange for my honest opinion. Thank you!

The Oracle Philon: A Coulton Banyon Mystery by Gerald J. Kubicki

5
The author supplied me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Something is causing man-made sink holes, water spots and horrible atrocities that killed millions around world. Vortices and Kaley West were called in to retrieve valuable artifacts for her boss's insurance company and possibly earn her a sizeable percentage, but once she vaulted into the Florida sinkhole, she only found she'd opened a Pandora's Box, and it would take the newly formed MAD team to put the monsters back in the box. THE ORACLE PHILON is another awesome must-read, and I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next!!

Lynn W
Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl

4
Thoroughly enjoyed this book about the author's sojourn as the restaurant critic for the New York Times. To avoid detection she finds Claudia, her mother's friend, an acting coach. They develop alternate personae for Ruth: clothes, wig, makeup, even a name and backstory. Ruth marvels that these "other women" dwell within her. She fools everyone, sometimes even her husband for a short time, but never her four-year-old son. Recipes included!

Bonnie
Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler

The Kept Woman by Karin Slaughter

5
This book makes me want to join the GBI just so I can meet Will Trent. Oh wait, he's not real. The writing is so well done and there are just enough details to make the reader feel immersed in the heat of the action. Descriptions are clever, such as, "Going outside was like walking straight into the mouth of a yawning dog." Yep, that perfectly describes the Atlanta humidity this summer. THE KEPT WOMAN is the 8th book in the series, but can stand alone. It has suspense, drama, romance, and even unicorns. I hope Karin Slaughter is already writing the next Will Trent book!

Karen
The Charm Bracelet by Viola Shipman

4
I chose this book because of the cover picture (shame on me)---BUT I am so happy that I chose it. This is a heartwarming and thoughtful story about the women in one family and how the charms on each of their bracelets represent the highs and lows they have experienced, the people that have shaped their lives, and the lessons they have learned. I have always been curious about the "why" of the choices of the charms that people choose to adorn their bracelets. It seems that not all choices are so visually evident. This is a nice relaxing summer read. This is a debut novel for the author.

Marsha
What We Became by Arturo Perez-Reverte

4
Wow--this tale of a scoundrel, tango dancer, thief, lover and all around charming character takes place between the World Wars and takes us on a very interesting journey as his past is revealed when he meets the woman he loves only three times in his life. Espionage, honor and courage are noted as we learn what makes him the man he becomes.

All Is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker

4
Fifteen-year-old Jenny Kramer was invited to a huge party and with a boy she really likes. But when this boy talks to another girl, Jenny drowns her sorrows with a lot of booze. She goes outside alone, to a wooded and secluded area. There she is brutally raped. If you were her parents would you approve of a controversial drug that would erase the brutal crime? To spare your child the reality and agony of such a thing? They do but there are major repercussions. Walker's debut was a twisted, raw, and complicated tale to tell. I didn't like the narrator. He was too righteous, arrogant, pompous in the entire center of the story. He took away what was unfolding before him and made it about himself. I do recommend it despite that individual.

The Perfect Con by Raleigh Blake and Alexa Wilder

5
The author gave me this ARC in return for an honest review. Sofia Costello learned to trust no one when planning a heist after her mom turned her dad in to stay out of prison. That was the last she'd heard from her. She had begged to go on their jobs, tried to convince them that she could do it but every time they refused. At 27 she decided to spend the summer with her uncle at Aurora Beach to get her head clear of Anthony's betrayal and lies and party with her best friend. At the mall they were caught shoplifting and a gorgeous hunk walked into the room like he owned it. Leo Battista just knew that Spider had run with the jewels. He had given time to plan the heist when he never called at the agreed upon time and after months of planning.

The Hollow Ground by Natalie S. Harnett

4
Interesting historical fiction book. I would have liked the author to go deeper into the coal mining process and the immediate and long-term effects on the residents.

The Second Girl by David Swinson

5
A great mystery! Not a lot of description (except for describing all the needles and broken bottles and gravel where he throws the bad guy), but a cop with a great solve rate who is deep into drugs and who is given an opportunity to retire with a small pension. He still has to work a little to make money for his drugs or he has to steal them. With his stash getting low, he stakes out one of the drug houses where the drugs and money are stored – there is always a guard but sometimes the house is left unguarded for a brief period. Frank Marr has been on a stakeout at such a house for days waiting for his moment. When the guard is called away, Marr frantically searches - no drugs but a teenager tied up in the bathroom. Get it!!

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

5
A classic that gave me a peek inside the old genteel South. Scarlett is the girl you love to hate, but her motives and practical nature help her and her family survive. There are places in the novel that are racist by today's standards, but the value lies in its picture of the reconstruction of the South that may be entirely true.

Andra
Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid

5
This is a book that looks at both sides of the question, "What if I had done that instead of this." It is the story of a young woman who has moved around in the search for her perfect place to live. Due to a turn in circumstances, she returns to the place where she grew up. Upon her return she reunites with her best friend and the one that got away because of decisions that were made. To celebrate her return her friend sets up a dinner with old friends and the old boyfriend. As the evening comes to an end, there is a question of whether to leave with her best friend or stay and reconnect with the old boyfriend. This is where the story begins, she decides to leave but what if she stayed? What would life have been like?

Those who liked NOBODY'S FOOL will re-connect with many of the characters. However, the story stands on its own; you do not have to have read the first book to appreciate EVERYBODY'S FOOL.

Miller's Valley by Anna Quindlen

Love the writing style and the main character. I live in an area in MA where 4 towns were "drowned" to create a reservoir so the subject was of interest to me. She tied everything up nicely at the end.

13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad

4
It conveys real concerns that fat people have in terms of how society views them, how it affects their relationships, particularly with parents and significant others. Lizzie, the main character, undergoes many life changes throughout the story, and thus changes in her self-perception. The author conveys realistic insights that resonate, at least for me, about how fat people, particularly women, view themselves. At first, I found the way the story was told a bit jarring and confusing, but I got used to the format quickly enough so that I could enjoy the book. It is a sobering, yet humorous at times, read.

Terry
Sex Object by Jessica Valenti

4
I was excited to read this book as a women and as someone who has experienced quite a bit of sexual harassment in her life. The book starts out slow with pieces of her every day, sometimes wild, life. Around the middle that changes and she writes about a personal scenario so horrific and raw that you can't put the book down. You will fear for her, cry, laugh, relate, and admire this strong yet vulnerable female as she takes control of her life. Every woman can relate to some type of sexual harassment in their life whether they realize it or not. Read this book, please!

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson

3
The book was funny at times. The book did tell you a lot about the Appalachian Trail from its being to its ending. The only thing is that it told more detail about the Appalachian Trail then it did about the two men walking the trail and the things they came across. The movie of the book was much better.

Kathryn
The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

4
I really enjoyed Ware’s IN A DARK, DARK WOOD and was very excited to get my hands on THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10. Again Ware sets up an interesting situation with likable and relatable characters. Lo Blacklock is a thirty-something journalist who gets the assignment of a lifetime - to take the maiden voyage on a small-scale luxury yacht. On Lo’s first day she borrows mascara from the woman in the next cabin – 10. Later that night she is sure she heard someone go overboard. She talks to security only to learn that no one is staying in cabin 10. What happened and who among the other guests and crew is to be trusted, one of whom is an ex-boyfriend? Is Lo imagining things? An awesome beach read!

Marked for Life by Emelie Schepp

4
Just when I thought that there was nothing new in the police procedural/crime thriller genre, along comes Swedish author Emelie Schepp and her heroine Jana Berzelius. The storyline is captivating from the beginning to the end, the characters are complex, and Jana is both enigmatic and thoughtful at the same time. Once you read this book you will be waiting for the next one with bated breath.

A Matter of Grave Concern by Brenda Novak

5
Brenda Novak is one of my go-to authors, but I didn't know that she wrote historical fiction! This book is a romantic suspense story set in London during the 1800s. Abby is hoping to become a surgeon like her father...but to do so his medical college must have bodies for dissection. She takes it upon herself to purchase the needed cadavers from disreputable body snatchers. Lucien is a nobleman disguised as a member of a body snatchers gang, and he's looking for his missing half-sister. He becomes Abby's protector in order to save her from the gang. I've been a big fan of Brenda Novak's Whiskey Creek series and her romantic suspense books, but I didn't know she wrote historical fiction. I feel like I've found a new author! Great book!

Cynthia
Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult

5
A compelling read focused on a school shooting committed by a student who is retaliating for having been bullied and outcast by his classmates. Picoult does an excellent job of describing a young man who represents a common profile for people who commit such crimes. She also explores the impact on the families of those touched by this act. A griping tale in this time of all too frequent seemingly random violence.

Becky
Serafina and the Twisted Staff by Robert Beatty

5
Another delightfully scary middle to upper grade reader from Beatty that continues the story of Serafina. The evil is back at the Biltmore Estate. Serafina has fled into the woods. A tragedy has caused her ally to doubt her, wolves and other strange creatures are attacking and there is an evil presence in Biltmore itself. Can Serafina triumph again?

The Girls by Emma Cline

2
What a sad and depressing book! Inspired by the girls who followed Charles Manson and committed vile crimes for him, this book follows a depressed and lonely girl as she falls under the spell of one of the followers of a cult leader in the 1960s. Although some of the book is written from the perspective of an older Evie, most of it written as present day in the 60s. Evie as a teen is depressed and depressing. Evie as a middle-aged failure is even more depressing. Skip this one! Well written but who needs it. 2 of 5 stars

The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan

3
TNE NARROW ROAD TO THE DEEP NORTH by Richard Flanagan is a grim and fierce book about a Japanese POW camp in Burma in WWII. The book seemed to be divided into three sequences. The first was a love story, the second involved the prison camp, and the third the aftermath as the prisoners and their captors returned to their homes after the war. The Japanese were brutal and committed many atrocities in the camp, and they were laid out in great detail. This book is not for the faint of heart, so be forewarned. It made the long list of the Man Booker Prize, beautifully written, but harrowing and extremely difficult to slog through. The only reason I stuck with it was due to it being my book club selection for July. Read at your own risk.

Wilde Lake by Laura Lippman

5
WILDE LAKE was a study in contrast and comparison for me. As a teacher of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD for over 25 years, I was astounded at the similarities, but approved of how skillfully the author updated the plot and characterization. I think if I had not read Lee's masterpiece previously, I still would have enjoyed WILDE LAKE. Maybe enjoy is the wrong word. Let's try captured.

Susan
Being Mortal by Atul Gawande

5
I think it is a must-read for all. It helps us move through the end of life and what matters at the end. In Lincoln, NE, it is our "One Book, One Lincoln" this year. There are a number of public discussions around the community led by physicians and others. It helped me understand how endings are so important, first for the individual at the end of their life and for those remaining. I am in two different book groups who have discussed the book with great interaction.

Brenda
Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine

4
This book was full of back-stabbing adventure. I am really amazed that objects and people in this series are transported by translations. I really did not foresee all the escapes that happened in this book. The author did a good job with the romance, just enough and no sappiness. It is fun to think of books and automatons as being alive. I enjoyed this story a little more than the first book in the series. I am looking forward to Book 3.

My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Patok

Asher, as a very young child, had a talent for painting but his Jewish father did not approve. This is not what Jewish men did. Asher followed his dream and pursued the only thing he knew he had to do.

Tessa B C
Circling the Sun by Paula McLain

3
McLain does extensive research and had a wealth of information on which to base this work of historical fiction. I appreciate how she paints the landscape of this part of Africa in the early part of the 20th century. I recognize Markham’s intelligence, determination and tenacity, but she never seemed to learn anything from her mistakes. I struggle with giving the work a higher rating because I so disliked Beryl Markham. McLain chose to focus her work on Beryl’s childhood and young adulthood, so that the character is just becoming the woman we know about when the novel ends. And I’m left feeling disappointed in both Beryl and the book.

The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu: And Their Race to Save the World’s Most Precious Manuscripts by Joshua Hammer

3
I'd give this a 3.5 stars. The story is fascinating. A man sets out to acquire ancient ephemera that had not been archived, and transfer the care and conservatorship to Timbuktu's librarians. Fortunately, he and other like-minded bibliophiles realize a Mali regime change could mean the destruction of these documents so they form a large group of smugglers to hide these valuables from Al Qaeda who seem intent on destroying anything ancient which is seen as heretical. The undertaking was massive and drew financial support from unbelievable sources (someone set up a Go Fund Me page). The story, at times, is gruesome and head shaking.

The Velvet Hours by Alyson Richman

5
Mathilde Beaugiron was born in poverty in France in the late 1800s and later became Marthe de Florian, a courtesan. Her apartment was willed to her granddaughter, Solange. Solange locked the apartment, its contents and secrets when she fled the Germans entrance into France. The apartment was left untouched until it was discovered 70 years later. This is a marvelous story of love and sacrifice. I loved this book and felt I was watching the story as it evolved.

This is his first novel and hopefully we have not seen the last of his protagonist, Gibson Vaughn, who is a computer hacker, investigator and one of a kind. He is hired to find out what happened to his childhood friend, the daughter of a man running for President of the U.S. who disappeared ten years ago. What a ride, what a thriller. Enjoy.

The Global War on Morris by Steve Israel

3
I received a review copy of this book. This delightful satire about former president and vice president (Chaney and Bush – who had which title?) claims that all statements presented by the two politicians are true – he does not make that same claim for Scooter Libby, Karl Rove, etc. Written by a former congressman, we learn of life-long government employees who practically run the federal government by themselves, have the power to create new jobs for themselves, and, best of all, have a secret maxi-computer (NICK) which spies on everyone and seriously mixes up info. It is a fun read, almost as fun as reading The Donald's retorts to anything and everything. The debut novel is copied by the Donald.

Kelly Rodriguez
Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler

4
This book had me so interested in reading it from the moment I picked it up. It centers around Tess who is a 22-year-old that has just moved to New York with no real plans for what she's going to do with her life. She finds a job at a downtown Manhattan restaurant as a "backwaiter". The story centers around her learning the "ins and outs" of an upscale restaurant. The descriptive language used to tantalize your senses for the food, wine, and lifestyle in the restaurant business will have you mesmerized and wanting for more.

Brenda
Harmony by Carolyn Parkhurst

2
This story about family had some really unique characters in it. The story was well constructed, it just was not for me a story that begged to be read. There were twists in the story that I had not foreseen happening. I might in the future give this author another try at entertaining me.

Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld

5
The book is a modern re-telling of Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. All the characters have the same names as the originals, but their lives have been updated for the 21st century. The author has come up with some unique ways of taking the concerns and sensibilities of the 19th century and make them believable for today. A quick but delightful read.

Something to Hide by Deborah Moggach

5
Deborah Moggach has such an ability to be able to weave separate storylines in and out of each other and still maintain a coherent story. I was a little confused in the beginning at the Prologue wondering why it was there when it seemed to have nothing to do with the storylines when lo and behold, a couple of characters popped up way in the last part of the book as minor characters. This time the main locations the story takes us to are London, England, Beijing, China, White Springs, Texas, and Assenonga, West Africa. Now if THAT is not enough to already pique your interest, I do not know what can.

Marylyn
The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George

4
A story of love and loss and reawakening which developed slowly but thus gave time for the characters to emerge fully. I usually give a book at least sixty pages to 'catch' me before I give up, and this was one that needed that introduction but was worth the wait.

Amy
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

4
I expected THE NIGHTINGALE to be another WWII story, much like all the others I've read. However, I was pleasantly surprised this one focuses on the role of women in the war. It alternates between present and past, which sometimes ruined my emotional attachment to the characters, but I'm so glad I picked it up!

Deborah Smith
The Nurses: A Year of Secrets, Drama, and Miracles with the Heroes of the Hospital by Alexandra Robbins

5
This non-fiction book was written by a reporter. It was an excellent read, in my opinion, for anyone who has an interest in the healthcare system. This book follows four nurses at various hospitals for a year. This book provides an intimate look into the healthcare system and I believe is a must-read for preparation and knowledge needed if you must be in the hospital system. The author does such a good job with the material. It flows well and isn't mired down in medical jargon.

Norma
The Round House by Louise Erdrich

3
A story about a 13-year-old Native American Indian boy who deals with the rape of his mother and the torture it inflicts on the family. The exact unknown location of the crime is critical. Who has jurisdiction, the Ojibwe reservation, the local or the federal courts? Even when it's understood who committed the crime it is unclear even if it will come to court. It had a dual theme of coming-of-age of young teenage boys with solving a social crime. Could this be an American-Indian TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD? To me many parts seemed mundane and the plot wandered many times. This may satisfy the writer but tries the patience of the reader. I enjoyed learning about the Ojibwe traditions and beliefs.

Night Moves by Nora Roberts

3
It's about a popular songwriter who moves to a small town to "get away from it all." She buys a dilapidated house and is fixing it up herself. Of course, she meets the town hunk who doesn't trust newcomers, especially rich ones. Things heat up when they start to re-landscape her yard...and get some surprises. We all know how the book is going to end, but it's somewhat entertaining getting there.

Sharon
Chance Developments by Alexander McCall Smith

4
McCall Smith always seems very accessible to me and this is no different, even though it is quite different from anything of his that I have read previously. Stories he conjures from looking at old and unidentified photos deal with love, with friendship, and with the struggle each person has to learn just who he or she is.

The Discovery of Sockett Greeny by Tony Bertauski

5
I obtained this ARC from the author in return for for an honest review. The story was confusing and boring at first but it captured my attention as I continued to read. Sixteen-year-old Sockett Greeny went to his homeroom to see that his two friends had left him behind and entered virtualmode ahead of him. He quickly sat down plugged into the net, and looked for his two friends. He found himself in trouble and a strange feeling over came him. The next thing he knew he was back in his body and the teachers said he'd crashed the database! After school he was sent home and his mom showed him where she went when she "worked". He didn't know if he was blessed or not by his psychic powers, especially when he arrived at Paladin Nation.

Panther's Prey by Lachlan Smith

2
This is the fourth in a series about Leo Maxwell, a lawyer working as a public defender, and too much of this novel depends on your understanding of previous books. Most of PANTHER'S PREY, however, can be understood. Leo has worked alongside a young woman, Jordan, defending a client who confesses to crimes he did not commit. Leo has a week-long affair with Jordan--one week. In the majority of the book, then, Leo risks his life numerous times to learn what happened to Jordan. It would be easier to accept Leo's actions if they were on behalf of a wife of 30 years. The story drags; it is slow. Characters lack personality, even Leo, even Jordan's father. It is boring.

Francisca E B
The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa

5
A beautifully elegant gem of a novel. The slow way in which the Housekeeper, Root and the Professor get to know one another is framed by his lessons on the poetry of mathematics. I liked how Ogawa used the Professor’s and Root’s love of baseball to frame their growing friendship. It is a story about love (not to be confused with a “love story”).

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

5
The last few months I've been reading essentially nothing but the newest mysteries. Out of all those books, THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR is my favorite! The characters are very deeply developed and the story takes all kinds of turns and twists that I didn't have any idea were coming. Shari Lapena weaves the story very concisely, without any extra fluff, keeping the pages turning.

This latest book in the Flavia de Luce series is a step up from the last one when Flavia was banished to school in Canada. Well, she's back home in familiar surroundings. It's Christmas season, her father is ill and in hospital, and there's a murder mystery to be solved. She sets out to solve it just like always. Flavia is starting to grow up and it shows in her behavior. There's not much chemistry involved in this novel, something I missed since she's an expert. Alan Bradley does his usual good job in letting us in on what Flavia is thinking regarding the murder she's trying to solve and the family worries she's experiencing. He makes her as delightful as ever. I hope the next book comes out soon.

The Stranger by Harlan Coben

4
I received a review copy via First to Read. The first thing that attracted me to this novel was the author. Coben is one of my favorites. I've read four of his books so far and have enjoyed them all. His descriptions of surroundings, occurrences, and characters set the scene. His voices vary according to the characters' age and circumstances. His astute observations of human nature and behavior are spot-on. The dialogue is true-to-life and, as always, he injects some humor. The chapters are usually short, often ending with a cliffhanger, making his books unputdownable. Coben wastes no time. The "stranger" is introduced to protagonist, Adam, in the very first chapter.

This Susan Mallery at her best! The story revolves around three daughters and the preparations for their mother's wedding. All three women lived through the same life-altering incident in the past and it affected each one of them differently because of 'who' they were and at 'what point in their life' they were at when the incident occurred. This is an interesting story that is funny at times, a little thought-provoking and it will have you thinking about events in your own life. Really good summer read.

The Beautiful American by Jeanne Mackin

Very interesting novel about model/photographer Lee Miller, focusing primarily on her time in France in the 1930s and in England after WWII. Such a different lifestyle back then!

The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson

This is a perfect thriller for me. The story remained interesting throughout and there were at least three twists I did not see coming (usually I can see them coming a mile away). I highly recommend this book. Very interesting ending as well. I loved it!

The Creepshow by Adria J. Cimino

I won this book from a contest site and agreed to give it an honest review. Although this is not a romance book it did address sexual harassment in the workforce and how one brave woman handled it. Wanda Julienne had just returned to work at Wilt Investment Services from maternity leave only to find that one of her co-workers had fallen to her death, out of a window. A man co-worker was singing in a loud voice and dancing in puddles in the library before he was taken away by guards, and her client's funds were in a decline when Thomas had done the opposite of what she told him to do! As a Senior Funds Manager, she was proud that her clients had enough trust in her with their money, only to have Thomas undo her hard work.

The Other Me by Saskia Sarginson

This is a novel that will interest you from the very first page. The settings shift between WWII Germany and some 50 years later. It's a coming-of-age story with compelling drama and some mystery. The characters are sympathetic and real. Highly recommended reading. One of the best books to read this year. If you have not had a chance to read it, I recommend picking it up.

This is three different stories in one. Interesting but not one of her best.

Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult

This is another great Jodi Picoult novel from 2012. I read it again, and I was just as mesmerized by it. Luke Warren is a wolf expert, and he has chosen to devote his life to them. \He even went so far as hiking into Canada and living with a wolf pack for two years. After he comes home, he is injured terribly in a car accident and remains in a vegetative state for many days. The doctors and his son recommend taking him off life support, but his daughter remains adamant that they should wait. This is a satisfying and thoughtful read. Picoult never disappoints me.

Something Beautiful by Jamie McGuire

4
I love Jamie McGuire's books, and this one definitely did not disappoint. You have a good story line, good characters you fall in love with, some romance, some drama and a good ending. She writes in a way that you feel like you are right there with the characters, and you can't help but cheer for them or want to yell and shake them. It is not a very big book, but it does pack a punch.

The McCullagh Inn in Maine by Jen McLaughlin

This is one of those James Patterson short books that he has been promoting. I thought I would give one a chance. It was not a bad book for being a short read, but I would say that it was one that I would recommend. It was your typical girl running home from the trouble she created somewhere else, catches up with old flame, tries to play tough girl and battle her own problems, old flame saves the day.

Deep Dark by Laura Griffin

5
Laura is one of my favorite authors. This is book #10 of her Tracers series, and it is really good. I don't know how she continues to make each book better than the previous one, but she does. I have a hard time putting down these books. DEEP DARK did not disappoint. Great characters, a hot male and a story that keeps you guessing. Very enjoyable read.

The Hundred-Foot Journey by Richard C Morais

Hassan Haji is born into a restaurant family and becomes a celebrated French chef in this delightful fable. The book focuses on his life’s journey, and those bumps in the road that might derail his ambitions. There is a significant clash of cultures when this Indian family establishes their Maison Mumbai in the small French village of La Lumiere. But good food will always attract a following.
