Fran
Backseat Saints by Joshilyn Jackson

5
Fans of her debut novel, "Gods in Alabama" will love the story of Rose Mae Lolley! Full of sass and good old country spark, Rose Mae, "Ro", sets out to escape the wrath of her abusive husband. Fun, engaging and compelling. Loved this story!

Andrew Beck
The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes

5
What a delightful romp! Barnes has a way of being quietly audacious while regaling you with the smoothest, most elegant language. The plot grabs you from the start and you have absolutely no idea where this short novel is going. But what a ride! The narrator is exasperating, foolish and ultimately tragic as he finally finds out what happened all those years ago and how that impacts today -- and just what his role was, and wasn't, in the entire process!

Rhonda Lomazow
Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline

5
A beautiful, heart-wrenching book. The story goes from the present to the past, showing where each character comes from. You will not be able to put this book down.

Jennie Reece
Eva Moves the Furniture by Margot Livesey

4
I loved this book about the deep connection between Eva and her 'companions' throughout her life. I enjoyed this book so much, I've read it twice, which is not something I often do!

Marion Peterman
A Wanted Man by Lee Child

4
I'm glad that Reacher is on his search for the telephone lady that has his old desk at Langley. I predicted, when I read 61 Hours, that he would do this. The book is quite interesting, but, as in 61 Hours, again, there is too much description of the roads taken, etc.; I would like to have more action and conversation. I'm on the final pages, so I'm sure it will pick up speed. I have read and liked all of his books and am anxious for him to meet the telephone lady who helped him. (Hopefully, his next book!)

Nancy Ciaio
The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman

4
I'm reading it now, and I can't put it down.

Allison Gardner
The House in Amalfi by Elizabeth Adler

5
Great Story!

Maxine Urso
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Larson

4
I just started it, but I like his style.

Vivian Taylor
The Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro

5
This is a dramatic and thrilling tale centering on the art thefts from the Gardner Museum in Boston. It also focuses on the politics found in the art world and provides an interesting glimpse into the world of art forgery. If you enjoy thrillers, then this story is the one to read.

Priscilla Escajeda
Defending Jacob by William Landay

3
Jacob is a 14-year-old boy charged with murder. His father is an assistant district attorney who faces a trial of his own, and finds out how little he knows of his son.

John M
Devil Said Bang by Richard Kadrey

5
This is the third and most recent Sandman Slim novel, and I am enjoying it as much as the first two! A fascinating premise - a half angel/ half man living on the mean streets of LA, who finds himself in charge of hell after a long twisty sequence of events. Written tongue-in-cheek, but not over the top, the series is well-written, and is now being enjoyed by others in my office.

Susan Vasi
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

5
I haven't finished reading this book yet, but if I could, I'd stay in my robe with wine and chocolates next to me and read til I finished it. (The book, not the wine). The Shadow of the Wind is about books. The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, the last copy of a particular book and the young man who embarks on a journey filled with everything you want in a mysterious, romantic, suspenseful novel. I have to stop this review now and go finish the book!!

Evelyn Hershkowitz
May We Be Forgiven by A.M. Homes

4
Great story!

Donna Shaw
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

5
I just finished this remarkable book about a life-changing experience. this book makes you realize how perception becomes reality and alters the truth. Fortunately, though hard won, the truth prevails in this story. After reading this book, I have selected it for my book club meeting next year. I'm sure there will be a lot of discussion on this book and on the group's personal experiences. I will certainly look deeper into my life experiences and be more aware of situations in the future.

pat lewis
The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian

4
This book is written in a style I thoroughly enjoyed. It travels from the present to the past regularly. It's a book that digs deep into your heart and mind and camps out forever. Learning of the Armenian genocide gave me an insight into the atrocities that happened that many of us had not known, I'm ashamed to say. The people in this book tell their plights with their bodies, both dead and alive. My heart broke, many tears were shed, yet the knowledge that this information has been passed on in this book for all to read makes my spirit soar. May God bless Chris and those who inspired and encouraged the writing of this book.

Saundra McKenzie
Contents May Have Shifted: A Novel by Pam Houston

5
We are taken on a journey from Madison, WI to Ksar Ouled Soultane, Tunisia and everywhere in between. It is about life, love, friendship, and it's all told in a very interesting way. Love it! Highly recommended.

Mary Healey
Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks

5
Caleb's Crossing caught my interest on page one. The first Indian boy who attends Harvard University is a story in itself, but it also tells the story of the college "way back then." A great read!

Adrianne Freiberg
The Orchardist by Amanda Coplin

5
A story told as if you are sitting around a campfire. I've only just begun, and I want to curl up with a cup of warm tea to continue. If the rest is as different and well-told as the beginning, I'm in for a long day curled up in a chair.

Norm Levy
The Fallen Angel by Daniel Silva

5
Another terrific book by Silva, whom President Clinton calls one of his favorite authors.

Kathleen Boucher
The Charm School by Nelson DeMille

4
A chilling thriller again from DeMille! I could not put this down....it is the story of a Russian "camp", which trains Russian citizens to become Americans and then infiltrate our country as spies. The "trainers" are American prisoners, many thought dead, who are imprisoned and brainwashed. Amazing premise!!

Carolyn A. Milliser
Still Alice by Lisa Genova

5
This novel is our journey with "Alice", from her early onset of Alzheimers Disease, through the many levels of denial, acceptance, and eventually ending with the unraveling of her life. After her acceptance, we feel her pain as she experiences the reactions of husband, family, friends and co-workers. Being a 49-year-old Harvard professor of cognitive psychology, she finds herself coping with a disease she knows has no cure or treatment. Her strength, as well as her tears, cannot change the fact that her life will no longer be one that she herself recognizes. This is an unforgettable journey, and an unforgettable book.

Lynn Demsky
Running Blind by Lee Child

5
A really great Reacher story! I just wish all of Child's books weren't so DARN long--if this were a hardback I wouldn't be able to lift it!

John Warner
The Giver by Lois Lowry

4
What if you could live your life without fear, pain or war? Would this be a utopia or a dystopia? Jonas is about to discover the answer. In Jonas's world there is no fear, pain or suffering—there isn’t even choice. The Community assigns a role for everyone by when the child becomes an adult, at twelve years of age. As his friends are assigned their respective roles, Jonas is skipped until the end of the ceremony. Jonas has been selected for a unique role—to receive special training from The Giver. Dorothy Boyum
Origin by Diana Abu-Jaber

4
A very good read--different from many books. You don't want to put it down, it keeps you so interested.

Annie Michelle (Joyce)
The Key by Simon Toyne

5
The Key is 2nd in this fantastic trilogy of Simon Toyne's, it is a crazy twisted ride all over the world everywhere evil Religious men lurk. Hunted, Hounded, Haunted she is the most important person in the world, she is KuShiKaam "The Key" and she is journalist Liv Adamsen ... Prepare to stay up all night turning pages and biting your nails!

Susan Jacobsen
The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe by J. Randy Taraborrelli

4
This book is a fascinating read. It's a bibliography of her life from birth till her death and tells what shaped her life and made her who she was.

Marie-Louise Molloy
Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
Ingenious writing!

Terri Roth
The Roots of the Olive Tree by Courtney Miller Santo

4
I am only about 2/3 through the book but am really enjoying it with several good twists of plot and character. I look forward to reading it to see what one of the 5 strong women of the story will do next and how it affects the others.

Betty Chrastka
The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny

4
A sweet slip into murder by Louise Penny. Inspector Gamache of the Quebec Surete is called to investigate the murder of a monk at a remote monastery. Looks like an inside job. Penny's descriptions are so engaging and the character of Gamache is by now so real, that reading her books is like entering a special world. I've not been disappointed yet.

Carol Ann Zimmerman
11/22/63 by Stephen King

4
A real change for this author! Taking a real life scenario, and putting a decidedly different twist on the situation, perhaps answering all of those 'real life conspiracy theories' which have been circulating ever since the actual incident happened!

Joanne Friday
The Darling Dahlias and the Confederate Rose by Susan Wittig Albert

5
This is the third in the series about strong southern women. They take care of the community and each other. They are all smart and determined to solve puzzles that might be causing harm to others. The women in this series have become my friends. I wait anxiously for each book so that I can visit again.

Anne Spier
Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher

4
How could I have not read this book years ago when it was first published! Maybe because it is 728 pages long and I had not yet retired. But now that I have delicious time on my hands, it is the perfect book to get lost in. It is the coming of age story of a young girl in pre-WWII England and takes you on through to 1945. It is peopled with wonderful characters and historic events. I am enjoying it thoroughly.

Sara
Damned by Chuck Palahniuk

5
I loved this book. I have just recently been reading Palahniuk and this might be my favorite so far.

Rhonda Struthers
Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

4
Just stumbled on this series and am loving it. I also just bought the True Blood Dvds seasons 1-4 to see how it resembles the books.

Rhonda Struthers
Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris

5
Second book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I never read any mysteries with Vampires before and can't believe how addicting it is. Sometimes you just have to try something new.

Lynn W
The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian

4
The twist at the end caught me completely by surprise. Now I have to read the book again!

Lesley Fry
Responsible Men by Edward Schwarzschild

3
I've given this 3 stars because I have read only 44 pages so far. The writing is OK and the plot good enough to keep me going. I assume my rating will go up as Amazon reviewers average 4 1/2 stars. The jacket blurb says it is a story of intrigue, redemption and human decency, gritty and tender, funny and achingly sad. I hope it lives up to the blurb.

sheila sarrett
Love Letters by Bryan Mooney

3
This e-book was a fast read, more of a love story than the mystery element that was part of it.

Rod Vaughn
Digital Wars: Apple, Google, Microsoft and the Battle for the Internet by Charles Arthur

5
Great book about how these digital businesses came to power and all the struggles that ensued in changing our digital world. It is very well written and keeps your attention with subtle humor and details on the infighting that took place. As these companies evolved they created (mostly Apple) world changing events in several industries.

Wendy Hampton
The Columbus Affair by Steve Berry

4
Interesting theory on Columbus's time in the new world and the riches he hid on Jamaica. Interspersed is a story line of a father and daughter that are at odds with each other but find their way back through their Jewish lineage.

Gina
I Couldn't Love You More by Jillian Medoff

4
I was drawn into this book by this witty, wise narrator. This book kept the surprises coming. A woman in a relationship- not a marriage- has a child with a guy. As they move in together, she inherits his two daughters and becomes instant stepmother. Complications ensue when the woman's college lover returns and ... don't want to tell you too much because I want it to be fresh for you.

PATRICIA FLANIGIN
The Shadow Queen by Rebecca Dean

5
Wallace Simpson, a woman of mystery. This story brings her to life from childhood to "The woman he loved". A marvelous read that captures the mood of the era. Dean brings alive romance, intrigue and deception. Wallis Simpson is undoubtedly a fascinating if not controversial woman in history.

Barbara Stahr
Mysteries of Winterthurn by Joyce Carol Oates

5
This novel, published in 1984 is the third of five dealing with 19th and 20th century in America. It is 514 pages in paper back. It is well written and a real page turner. One might think a dictionary is needed at your side because of the unusual and extensive vocabulary. However the author cleverly includes these words in her sentences to clearly tell what they mean. This is a story about a male detective had his two female cousins. The detective always manages to figure out who the real guilty person is, even though the story points to someone else. This is a complete self contained novel and a good mystery.

Tara O'Donnell
Marvel Comics: The Untold Story by Sean Howe

4
A great history of how the home of Spiderman,Captain America and the X-Men become the big name in comics as well as Hollywood films. Sean Howe gives an intriguing look at the ups and downs artists such as Jack Kirby and Chris Claremont had to deal with over the years, due to changing times and management changes. You really get a gritty Mad Men vibe from this book, with plenty of real life heroes and villains to choose from. Yes,Stan Lee is a pivotal piece of the Marvel puzzle, with the author painting an honest portrait of the charismatic pitchman. Even if you're not a big comic book fan, this "untold story" will be hard to put down.

LORRAINE CHARLES
The World Without You by Joshua Henkin

4
Beautifully-written novel about a family gathering for the one year anniversary of the death of the family's only son. It is mainly written from the perspective of the family's three daughters.

laura Beierbach
Rogue by Mark Sullivan

3
Happy to have tried it.

Linda Harrison
The Third Gate by Lincoln Child

4
This book is about the study of Egyptology. A research crew is in search of an ancient tomb believed to be beneath the waters of a swamp at the headwaters of the Nile. Although there is a lot of scientific language, the book is suspenseful as ancient curses began to come true.

Linda Harrison
Unseen by Nancy Bush

4
It took a while to get into this book as the characters were a little confusing. One of the characters called himself Wolf and howled so I first thought it was a paranormal book. Instead, it turned out to be a great mystery that will keep you turning pages until you finish the book.

Linda Harrison
Just Down the Road by Jodi Thomas

4
This is the first book written by Jodi Thomas that I have read. After reading about the small town of Harmony, TX and some of its citizens, I intend to read Thomas’ other books. It was a great book and reminds me of books by Debbie Macomber and Robyn Carr.

Linda Harrison
Nowhere to Run by C. J. Box

5
As Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett gets ready to return to his home base, he decides to check out the mountainous area where cars had been vandalized and tents slashed. But when he meets up with the men responsible, Joe knows that he is out of his league and only hopes he can get out alive. A great book that will keep your interest.

Jennifer Poffenberger
City of Dark Magic by Magnus Flyte

5
I absolutely love this book...I cannot put it down! A must read for December 2012. It has magic and intrigue. No spoilers here.

Linda Harrison
Nowhere to Run by Nancy Bush

5
This book is suspense with a capital S and deserves greater than 5 stars. It will keep you reading until the end as you try to guess who the murderer is. This is the first book involving the Rafferty family and centers around the two youngest Rafferty's who are both police officers.

Linda Harrison
Spring Fever by Mary Kay Andrews

5
Andrews’ book focuses on a small town dependent upon a main industry and the people that live and work there. A heartwarming story where true love prevails.

Janice Buckner
In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner

5
Just getting started, but really like it so far.

Peggy Kincaid
A Sunless Sea by Anne Perry

5
I have been a Anne Perry fan for years and for me the mystery is just part of the enjoyment. With this book it is the politics of courtrooms that is fascinating in Victorian times especially regarding women. This book involves William Monk and his wife Hester and is a wonderful mystery from beginning to end, but for me it is the battle in the courtroom for the life of a beautiful woman and the sordid tale of opium that takes your breath away. It is a very informative and fascinating tale that will keep you turning the page into the night and one you won't forget soon.

Peggy Kincaid
Robert Ludlum's The Janus Reprisal by Jamie Freveletti

4
The Covert One books are so much fun to read. Jamie Freveletti has done a wonderful job of writing the latest edition and if you have enjoyed the previous books you are going to love this one. Jon Smith is back and in rare form and of course in danger every second. This is a real thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way to the end and leaves you eager for the next book in line.

Marian Collins
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

5
I didn't want to put this book down. It was interesting to see how her interactions with others changed from day to day. It made me think about life and death differently.

Marian Collins
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

5
I didn't want to put this book down. It was interesting to see how her interactions with others changed from day to day. It made me think about life and death differently.

Ivy Pittman
Guest of Honor by Deborah Davis

5
Davis does a phenomenal job uncovering the detailed early lives of Booker T. Washington and Theodore Roosevelt, leading up to their relationship and two of the greatest leaders in America.

Debbie M
Red Delicious Death by Sheila Connolly

2
I like the exploration of history for the Massachusetts vicinity and the description of the various types of apples, but the mystery proved to be mushy. The ending was bland and not what was expected. I felt out of the loop since I had not read the first book of the series set in a small, picturesque town of Massachusetts. The characters are so-so. Meg's friend, Lauren, seems not too friendly. I will probably read the rest of the series because I enjoy reading of different areas and learning more about apples.

Melanie S.
The Giver by Lois Lowry

4
I like a good book, regardless of the age group it is meant for. I read The Giver on a recommendation by both a friend and my teenage daughter who said this was their favorite childhood book. I really liked this story of a futuristic society. It was quite imaginative and engaging, reminding me a bit of The Hunger Games, but I enjoyed this book so much more than The Hunger Games. I will probably continue on to read the other books in the series.

Ann Golobic
Private by James Patterson

3
I finally discovered James Patterson!

Judy Quast
Never Knowing by Chevy Stevens

5
I am almost finished with this book, & I have been spellbound since I started it. What a psychological experience this is. I have even been waking up in the middle of the night (between 2-4 a.m.) & reading a chapter or more. I cannot wait to find out what happens. This book is scary, mysterious, & is giving me the creeps literally. Great book! First time I've ever read Chevy Stevens, but it won't be the last.

Bobbie Davis
The Hare With the Amber Eyes by Edmund De Waal

1
First book in eleven years of my Florida book club that I didn't finish reading a book! Gave up trying after 95 or so pages. Guess it is okay if you are an art history major but dull, dull, dull! A couple of the girls liked it but they were in a small minority. Many gave up and the ones that did finish it were not encouraging! Had to give it 1 star or they wouldn't take the submission!!!

Ashley Sullivan
Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder

5
This book was amazing. There were twists throughout it, some expected others not. I would highly recommend it to any one who enjoys action, romance, and fantasy.

Laurie Weatherlow
The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters

4
A Great novel set in post WWII London. I had to read it during the day because It was very eery. Loved how the house "comes to life".

Debbie M
One Bad Apple by Sheila Connolly

3
This is the first of a series set in rural Massachusetts. I enjoyed this book better than the other book in the series. The writing is not deeply psychological or vividly graphic. The story centers on the people in a small, rural town in Massachusetts. The death is not horrible; a man is discovered in a newly opened trench. The problem is that the man dead is Meg Corey's ex boyfriend who is trying to fast-talk the women of the town into voting for progress. The characters are not dimensional figures as this is a cozy mystery that will not cause nightmares. I like the exploration of history and apples.

Tessa
Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson

4
Wonderful story of friendship, love and standing up for one's principles against popular opinion. Simonson is a modern-day Jane Austen. Bravo, Major Pettigrew!

Muriel Logan
Kindred Spirits by Sarah Strohmeyer

4
This is a wonderful book about friendship among women. When one of the gals, Lynne, passes away the other three friends are entrusted to sort through her belongings and fulfill a final wish involving a long kept secret.

Terri Jones
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

4
This is a book you won't want to put down. The four featured women are unforgettable and their lives are credibly interwoven in ways that you won't imagine until you get to the final chapters of the book. I will definitely look for other books by Alice Hoffman to read.

Marialba Martinez
No Easy Day by Mark Owen and Kevin Maurer

4
We finally find out what really happened during the operation that ended up with Obama bin Laden killed. Owen speaks very clearly, without too much embellishment unless it pertains to the mission. I enjoyed reading it in one sitting.

Nora Newsock
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

3
This book was really filled with many "twists and turns"! It took about half way through for me to really "get hooked"! It was really a great vacation read!

Bonnie
Mr. Spaceman by Robert Olen Butler

3
Odd little novel, but ultimately touching. Spaceman marries earth woman, tries to learn about earthlings by abducting a busload of them and reading their thoughts.

Kendra Hill
The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

2
It took quite a few pages for me to get into this book. I'm not into politics at all, and really, this is about the politics of a small town. It was the characters, more than the story that drew me in finally. I am still not sure I 'like' this book, but I do have to finish it at this point.

Sally
Chasing The Dime by Michael Connelly

4
A good book from a wonderful writer. This book is not part of the Bosch series, but it is still a great read.

Crystal Blackburn
Backfire by Catherine Coulter

5
A thrilling and suspenseful story featuring Special Agents Sherlock and Savich.

sherry mcelroy
Red Rain by R.L. Stine

5
Sounds like a good read! :)

Margaret Nance
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

5
It is amazing to me the cruelty that one person can inflict on another. This is a story of A GI prisoner of war in the Pacific Theater. It is a true story of one man's ability to survive the horrors of being held a prisoner with a sadistic jailor. It is an incredible story of bravery and survival. This is our book discussion selection for Oct.

Rosemary DeMarois
The Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama

4
Just before World War II, a time I can remember, a young Chinese man, Stephen is sent to his family's beach house in Tarumi, Japan to recover from tuberculosis. He and the gardener, Matsu become friends. Steven learns to deal with lonliness and finds comfort in the garden, painting and new friends.

Elaine Beierbach
The Twelve by Justin Cronin

5
Right up my alley.

Letitia Eytcheson
A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

5
Although this book was published quite a while ago, this is the first time I've ever read it. It's a fantastic story about a remarkable friendship. You'll laugh out loud and cry real tears. I highly recommend it!

Michelle Archer
True Believers by Kurt Andersen

4
Supreme Court Justice Nominee, Karen Hollander, looks back at her life, particularly the events of the 60's. What did she do at eighteen that would keep her from accepting the nomination? That is the question that will keep you reading to the very end. A thought provoking book. I particularly enjoyed the comparison of the young 60's protesters to modern day occupied protesters. Interesting.

Mary
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty

5
So far (about halfway), I love this book! The characters are interesting and well developed and the unfolding story is intriguing.

Reva Wamsley
Second Opinion by Michael Palmer

5
I loved this book! The main character is Thea, a doctor, comes home from Africa after her father, also a doctor, has been in a hit & run accident. He's in a coma but Thea discoveres that he may actually have locked in syndrome. Her twin brother & sister want to pull the plug on him. She startes to suspect that the accident was no accident. She meets a handsome securty guard that works for the hospital & he starts helping her investigate. The ending of this book completely caught me by surprise.

Judy O.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

3
I have mixed feelings about this book. For one thing, I thought it was way too long and wordy. It was 400 pages, which could easily have been 300 and would have told the same story. Since it was a story of a person who is a sociopath, it was very intense all the way through. I even used the word "weird" when I was describing it to a friend. The plot was suspenseful, though, and kept me reading. I didn't like the ending as other reviewers have also noted. All in all, I'd recommend it as a worthwhile thriller.

Jud Hanson
Dead Simple by Peter James

5
Outstanding novel introducing British Police Inspector Roy Grace. James earns membership among the likes of Elizabeth George and Peter Robinson.

Wendy Catalano
The Last Victim by Karen Robards

4
The Last Victim is my first novel by Karen Robards. It is a non-stop page-turning paranormal romance filled with suspense. An excellent fast-paced tale of murder, FBI profilers and psychics. I enjoyed the characters both living and dead and hope to see them in future novels. I look forward to the sequel of this book and also plan to read her romantic suspense novels.

Joan
The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

3
I found this book to be a disappointment after all the media hype. The language was a little over the top and felt like it was inserted for shock value. Readable, but IMO not great.

Rebecca Chome
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

4
A short trip to the mailbox sends Harold on a journey of self-discovery, a walking trip across England with nothing but the clothes on his back. As he contemplates his life and the things around him, we wait to see if he finds what he expects at the end of his pilgrimage. The answer is "yes" and "no", and we have a mostly enjoyable time traveling along with him.

Lynn Hough
Kill Switch by Neal Baer and Jonathan Greene

4
Very good read with lots of twists and turns. At times I felt it was jumping around a little too much between the intertwined story lines but was still able to follow.

Darcy Pawlowski
A Wanted Man by Lee Child

4
We Jack Reacher fans can be grateful that our hero never seems to grow older. In this, his new adventure, Jack hitches a ride with trouble, and once again triumphs over a mess of evil-doers!

Sally Bergstedt
Relentless by Dean Koontz

3
This is about an author that receives a bad review from a renowned critic. The critic ends up going after the author and his family. Strange book. I thought that the author was writing a story within a story, but it was not so. Milo, his son, was great though. I listened to the audiobook.

Angela Satalino
Catherine the Great by Robert Massie

4
Mr. Massie brings Catherine and her court alive. I'm learning so much without being bored at all. It makes it all the more fascinating that this historical period corresponds to the early years of the U.S.

Kimbrell Scheunert
Strip Jack by Ian Rankin

5
I love Ian Rankin! This is crime fiction at it's best. The main character, Detective Inspector John Rebus, is well rounded and interesting. Rebus is flawed, but honorable. The story leads you through twists and turns of several cases that come together in the end. A riveting read. Rankin never disappoints.

Maya Beck
The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom

5
Great book that you don't want to put down! I loved all the characters.

Crystal Blackburn
Split Second: An FBI Thriller by Catherine Coulter

5
An excellent thrilling read that I didn't want to put it down.

Bobbie Mohney
Solo: A Memoir of Hope by Hope Solo

4
This book is a biography of Hope Solo's life it starts off when Hope was a child and the circumstances that made her who she is today. It amazes me how someone could endure so much in a lifetime and come out to be one of the leading goaltenders in the US Olympic soccer team.

Dorothy Flood
I Left My Heart by Debbie Macomber

3
I am a long time fan of Debbie Macomber but these two short stories were a disappointment. The first one "A friend or Two" was pretty good and the reason why I gave it 3 stars. However, the second one "No Competition" was a waste of time and hardly deserved 1 star.

Bonnie Gluhanich
The Rope by Nevada Barr

3
Okay mystery...took a while to get into it, but it moved along well. Will keep you guessing.

Ann Thaxton
Zoo by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge

5
Great Book!

Lori Bednaz
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Paula C
The Importance of Being Seven by Alexander McCall Smith

4
The latest in the Scotland Street series still entertains and amuses. Dear Bertie will soon turn seven and he has so many dreams. It is good to pick up a Scotland Street book and find out what all the characters have been doing.

This is one of those cozy mystery series where vivid, graphic death does not appear. Most of the time, the death is by a blow to the head that at first appears to be an accident. Not a single death has been by a gun or knife. Again, I enjoy the recipes and the discussion of the history of apples and the process of an apple orchard. The characters are not very dimensional, and many of the stereotypes are trite. I am unsure about the politician, Rick Sainsbury, who admits a degree of guilt in a cover-up. The relationship of Seth and Meg is warm, but not sexy. I really dislike Meg's friend, Lauren.

Psycho USA: Famous American Killers You Never Heard Of by Harold Schechter

Fascinating felons together with interesting historical perspective.

Run The Risk by Lori Foster

5
Run The Risk is the first book in a new series, by Lori Foster, called Love Undercover. It had everything and more in what I want in a romantic suspense novel. It was fast-paced, had a great plot, well-developed characters, action, unexpected twists & turns, romance and sizzling hot sex scenes. I loved the intriguing spin of Pepper's character and paired with Logan they made a captivating couple. I didn't want this novel to end and I am eagerly awaiting the 2nd book in this series.

Renee' Booker
High on Arrival by Mackenzie Phillips

3
It amazing for someone to take the chance to write about their life and tell the world how it was with her.

Renee' Booker
High on Arrival by Mackenzie Phillips

3
I amazing how she was able to tell it all about her childhood and family life.

Sandy McCullough
Open and Shut by David Rosenfelt

4
Very good! Fast paced with lots of humor thrown in. I will look for more by this author.

Gloria Riffie
A Cup of Friendship by Deborah Rodriguez

4
It was very timely, the characters were very diverse and interesting and it was an easy read in that it flowed like a good novel should. It takes place in Afghanistan where Sunny has a coffee house and everything revolves around her and the coffee house and the people who work and visit there. I definitely recommend it and it was a good book for a book discussion.

Jud Hanson
Prior Bad Acts by Tami Hoag

5
Book #2 in this series and it is a winner-great choice for a rainy afternoon or that airport layover.

Barbara Jennings
Solitude by F. Robert Kull

4
Author writes in journal form of his one year experience of living alone in the wilds of Patagonia. His description of the environment and his personal thoughts and feelings are vividly portrayed in the book. It is a wonderful story of finding ones place in the world and coming to terms with his handicap.

Irene Unger
The Healing by Jonathan Odell

4
Story of the slaves and plantation owners and how their lives intertwine before the Civil War. One slave has "the gift" and becomes a healer for the slave population. Beautiful story.

Sherrie Gil
The Descendants by Kaui Hart Hemmings

5
This was a great book.

Brenda Rupp
Hidden Truth by Judith Miller

4
The main story is about two women, one a visitor, in the closed communities of the Amana Communities. Amish basically. One is conflicted about the new shepherd sent to help her family and the other goes to visit the same family to try and find out why her Mother was so unhappy and melancholy her entire life and she died that way. Dovie wants to find out answers for why her Mother was like that and she goes to visit only to find out no one is talking. She also begins to develop a relationship with a young man there even though she was not raised Amish. Good book, very interesting. Lets you have a peak into why they do things the way the do.

Janice Baly
The Importance of Being Seven by Alexander McCall Smith

5
The title of this book refers to my favorite Alexander McCall Smith character, a boy named Bertie. I've read all of McCall Smith books and Bertie is particularly memorable.

Wendy Catalano
Relentless Pursuit by Adrienne Giordano

4
Like the other books in this series Relentless Pursuit has action, suspense and romance. Billy and Kristen were two very unique characters each with their own issues. As the chemistry between the two developed there were many passionate moments as well as priceless occasions that had me laughing out loud. Another great book in the Private Protector series!

Gail Coulson
The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman

5
This is the best book that I have read this year. The author doesn't judge the characters but she makes you feel their pain, joys and indecision. A book club would have many moral and ethical topics to discuss with this book. I look forward to another book by this author.

S ANDERSON
Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James

4
Better than we thought it would be.

Janet P Bedell
Altar of Bones by Philip Carter

4
Great suspense with a tie in from 100 by years ago happenings to modern day events. Very suspenseful with a historical bent.

Cherie Wright
Raising Blaze by Debra Ginsberg

5
Great book that describes what it can be like raising a child with special needs. There are very few real life experience books, it's too bad because they can really help. I also think every parent that has a child in school should read this book. It gives them a perspective they NEED to have!

Deana Jacoby
Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood

5
The title sheds mysterious meaning on this tale involving the daughters of a button maker in industrial revolution America. Atwood's illumination of women's roles, rights (or lack of), and secrets as dictated by the society and culture leads to much rumination by readers. Intertwined in the story is a mystery of a secretive, strong, defiant woman who shocks and delights the characters in the novel as well as the reader. I personally love stories within stories and how they play with various levels of meaning for novels.

Emily
The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe

5
It's just a beautifully written memoir. Everyone should read it.

Dorothy Newmark
The Shoemaker's Wife by Adriana Trigiani

5
This is a beautifully written book that follows the lives of two orphaned Italian brothers, Eduardo and Ciro. It is an epic tale of love, war, and the importance of family. Set in the beautiful Italian Alps, Manhattan and Minnesota this is storytelling at its finest.

Michelle Archer
The Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling

3
You cannot help admiring J. K. Rowling's writing skill when reading her books. That is the reason this book gets 3 stars. Otherwise I had a hard time enjoying it. It was a social commentary that was a little overdone. There were tons of characters, all bitter, mean-spirited, and unlikeable. As far as I could tell the nicest guy in Pagford was the dead guy.

Esther Whatley
Sentinel Abandoned by Matthew Dunn

5
Sophisticated and beautifully written spy novel with a great human touch. Breathtaking suspense keeps you wondering what will happen next. I raced through this one but was sorry when I finished - I definitely wanted more. I look forward to Dunn's next book. Highly recommend for thriller or spy fans.

Nicole Fowlkes
They Call Me...Montey Greene by A.R. Yoba

4
A new suspense thriller novel (book #1 in a series) by a new author. An easy read, with plenty of twist and turns that kept me guessing until the end, and even then I still had to go back and re-read a few chapters to see if I missed something.

shelly itkin
NYPD Red by James Patterson and Marshall Karp

5
Once again James Patterson is at his best you won't be able to put this book down. The city is rolling out the red carpet to have Hollywood start making more movies in NY instead of Hollywood and there is a sick, psycho on the loose. He starts off by poisoning a famous director, then a fatal shooting takes place in the Silvercup Studios in LIC and next a killing in front of Radio City Music Hall. You won't be able to put this book down till you find out who this person is and how these special forces are going to capture him before he attacks again. A must read for James Patterson fans.

Diane Pollock
Cold Light by Jenn Ashworth

4
Just got started, but it's pretty riveting!

Laura Hartness
Goodly Creatures by Beth Massey

4
Recently I finished "Goodly Creatures" by Beth Massey, which is a "Pride and Prejudice" reimagining. Massey's writing is well done, and although the novel is a bit long at over 600 pages, I relished reading it. She makes some interesting and controversial choices in her version of the story, but I thought she handled the provocative issues in a mature fashion, without being gratuitous. If you're looking for a good, solid Austenesque read, this one's for you.

Rosalie. Sambuco
Fall of Giants by Ken Follett

5
A wonderful story. I highly recommend this book. I have already started reading book 2 of this trilogy. If you are a fan of this author, you will not be disappointed. I am eagerly awaiting book 3.

Rhonda Lomazow
The Art Forger by B. A. Shapiro

5
A thriller based in the world of art reproduction. Kept me turning the pages.

Kendra Hill
Guilty Wives by James Patterson and David Ellis

4
One of Patterson's better stories of late, engrossing, unpredictable, a quick and enjoyable read!

Denice
To Have and To Code by Debora Geary

5
Debora Geary is a great writer. She writes fun, easy to read books, and leave you feeling good. To Have and To Code is a back-story of Nell, one of the main witches in her other books. I highly recommend Geary's books ... don't let the idea that it's about witches throw you off! I only wish I could be a part of witches central … Highly recommend!!

Vicki Hancock
Kill Zone by C.J. Lyons

4
Very good book. I would suggest reading the first 2 books in the Lucy Guardino FBI Series but you really don't have to. The book is VERY fast paced and action nonstop. It's one of those books that you truly do not know who is involved until the end. I would definitely recommend to anyone that enjoys crime books and likes the nonstop action.

John M
Those Across the River by Christopher Buehlman

5
Set in 1935 in a small town way back in the woods in Georgia, something bad lives across the river. Our protagonist, who is a newcomer to the town, along with his new wife are part of the gradual deterioration of the social fabric. This is a fast and fun read, and the author does an excellent job of describing the depression times in a rural area. Of course there is a supernatural element as the cause of the town's misery, but unlike so many books today, this one does not go over the top during the climax. And there are a few "O'Henry" twists at the end too.

Judy Frasca
City of Women by David R. Gillham

5
Excellent story of women during the Second World War in Berlin. Story focuses on a German woman named Sigrid Schroeder who while married gets involved with a Jewish lover while trying to help a Jewish young woman who is a Jewish sympathizer. Very suspenseful and a excellent read.

Tampatha Morales
They Call Me...Montey Greene by A.R. Yoba

5
An action packed book from cover to cover. Witty dialogue and colorful unforgettable characters. Everybody should have a friend like Spider. A new voice for the suspense thriller genre is born. Can't wait for the second book.

Marsha
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

3
If you are a fan of magical fantasy or the Twilight books then you will enjoy this story of star-crossed lovers involved with a Circus of Dreams. It's hard to explain and won't be everyone's cup of tea but you know who you are. This is for those that are willing to suspend belief and enter into a magical realism tale.

Nancy Ciaio
Phantom by Jo Nesbo

5
Finished this book yesterday. Once I had started reading, I couldn't put it down. It kept me thinking constantly, questioning how the book could possibly end. A very complex and great crime thriller.

Judy Pike
The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

What a great first novel!

Mary Zelli
Heaven Should Fall by Rebecca Coleman

4
Good, fast read with an easy to follow story about how one family deals with a loved one coming home from war and how they react to his PTSD. Family loyalties, conflicts, secrets and an outsider, Jill, looking in and marrying in to the family reacts. Well written and worth the read if anyone is dealing with a loved one returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Interesting Story

Jean M
A Wanted Man by Lee Child

3
A man has been stabbed to death in an old pumping station. He was seen going in with two others, but he never came out. He has been executed, the knife work professional, the killers vanished. Within minutes, the police are notified. Within hours, the FBI arrives, laying claim to the victim without ever saying who he was or why he was there. All Reacher wants is a ride to Virginia but he soon discovers he has hitched more than a ride. He has tied himself to a massive conspiracy that makes him a threat -- to both sides. This is another Lee Child white-hot thriller, nothing is what it seems, and nobody is telling the truth. As the tension rises, the twists come fast and furious keeping readers turning the pages.

Jean M
The Last Victim by Karen Robards

3
Dr. Charlotte Stone sees what others do not. A sought-after expert in criminal pathology, Charlie regularly sits face-to-face with madmen. Obsessed with learning what makes human monsters commit terrible crimes, Charlie desires little else from life -- no doubt because when she was sixteen, she herself survived a serial killer's bloodbath: A man butchered the family of Charlie's best friend, Holly, then left the girl's body on a seaside boardwalk one week later. Since that happened, Charlie sees the spirit of people who have died. If you like a bit of the occult, you'll love this book. There is also a love story woven in.

Ali McDonnell
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarity

4
This is a great story. I never knew about the Orphan Trains in the US taking kids to the Midwest for "adoption". This book has inspired me to do research and learn more about that.

Sharon Elliott-Fox
High Country Fall by Margaret Maron

4
Another good Deborah Knott mystery. Deborah is sent to an upscale community --- up from its roots in Appalachia that is --- where she discovers that not all is as idyllic as it appears on the surface. Power, ethics, greed, anger, despair and hope are emotions that are well developed by Maron as Deborah finds her twin nieces are not doing what their parents think they are doing, but following a dream of their own.

Sharon Elliott-Fox
Dead as a Scone by Ron and Janet Benrey

4
A cozy mystery set in a tea museum. Museum director Nigel Owen and museum curator Dr. Felicity (Flick) Adams find they have more in common than a job as they attempt to discover who killed Dame Elspeth Hawker just as she was about to reveal that a thief had been active in the museum.

Cindy Sheets
Bones Are Forever by Kathy Reichs

5
This book was a page turner. Trying to assemble all of the various clues in the story was more difficult than assembling the bones! However, the story had a rather sad undertone as some of the victims were very young.

Anne Marie Koschnick
I, Michael Bennett by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge

5
As many of Patterson's works, it was definitely a page turner. With short chapters that beg "one more, one more," I finished the book in record time. It kept my interest and kept me guessing. The ending was like the cliff hanger of a TV series when you don't know if the star has signed his new contract. Michael and Catherine do seem too perfect --- each in their own way --- but every now and then, a flaw slips in and you think, "Ah, they are human..." I do find it scary, that there are people in the world, like the drug gangs, who can hurt others so easily. If you have a strong stomach, and want a quick, exciting read, I would highly recommend the book.

Peggy Hendrick
White Horse by Alex Adams

4
I love post apocalyptic books and read them whenever I can find a good one and this is a good one! Told in the first person and though alternating paragraphs (Then/Now) we learn of a deadly bacteria that is unleashed on the world. Most people die, but there are some like Zoe who seem to be immune (and then there is a small percent of the population who become zombie like). Don't let the zombies turn you off though because there aren't that many in the first book. (Oh, did I tell you this is the first of a trilogy? Yeah!) I am loving this book so far, will look forward to the next "chapter."

Judith Mroz
Blind Your Ponies by Stanley Gordon West

5
What an awesome book! I loved each and every one of the people from Willow Creek. I felt their pain, their love and their courage. Making characters come alive like this is a skill not many authors have. I would know the town of Willow Creek if I ever saw it and I know I would see Tom, Sam or even Grandma walking the streets. I had tears from one page and then a huge smile on the next. Maybe it was predictable. Maybe it was somewhat impossible to do. For some reason, I did not care. I don’t want to return this book to the library because I want to keep this story and its people with me.

Reeves Honey
A Discovery Of Witches by Deborah Harkness

5
I am in love with the "intellect" of this book! Except for reading Steven King occasionally and Justin Cronin's THE PASSAGE, I do not read any fantasy or supernatural books at all. I was interested in this because it had been on The New York Times list.

Susan Johnson
Too Close to Home by Linwood Barclay

5
Treading along the path of who-dun-it kept me at edge and frustrated when I had to get off the bus and go to work. I wanted to keep reading! Super-duper plot, kept me page-turning all the way through! My first Barclay book & looking forward to reading more of his.

Audrey Anderson
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson

2
My book club read this and most people enjoyed it, some really enjoyed it. I would have abandoned it after page fifty had I not committed to read it. There were some bright spots, but mostly I found reading it a chore.

Audrey Anderson
Predatory Game by Christine Feehan

4
This is a paranormal romance, but what I like about this series is that it is much more than a romance, it has action and adventure which is as much or more a part of the story. There are sex scenes, but they are love scenes and mostly I skim those as the romance part is secondary for me. I think this book would appeal to a lot of tastes. It is #6 in a series called Ghost Walkers.

Judy O.
Love Anthony by Lisa Genova

3
After reading this author's two other books, this one somewhat disappointed me. It is a book about an autistic boy, but there are too many other plots thrown in which takes away from the central theme. It was good, but just not as good as I had hoped.

Lyanne Poirier
Night Watcher by Wendy Corsi Staub

3
I am about half way through this book and enjoying the pace of the novel and trying to determine the killer. It is an interesting read because the author has the murders happening during 9/11 as it requires adjustments and time delays for the detectives. This is the first book I read by Staub and I will read others.

Arthur Harriman
The Two Minute Rule by Robert Crais

3
Coleridge and Wordsworth once jointly urged the "suspension of critical disbelief" in the reading of poetry. That 'suspension' often helps readers of prose. Certainly, such does here. The police officer son of a just freed convict is among a group of mysteriously murdered officers, and the father joins with a female ex-FBI agent, the same one who sent him to prison, among other implausibilities, to uncover the the murderers and by occasion locate a fortune in concealed loot.

Mary Bryant
Killing Kennedy by Bill O'Reilly & Martin Dugard

4
Though I was an adult during Kennedy's Administration, this book revealed many facts of which I was unaware.

Rosemary Sobczak
Last to Die by Tess Gerritsen

4
This book had an intriguing plot, but I felt that things could have been more adequately explained at the end.

Kathy Larocque
The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

5
This is a very revealing story about the life and personalities of Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley Richardson. Most of the novel takes place in Europe and reveals the ups and downs of being in love and married to a writer such as Hemingway. It is a fascinating read about life in the 1920's.The novel also introduces you to a number of artistic people living in Paris at the time. It gives us glimpses into the lives they are leading and may tempt one to do further research on their backgrounds. A great book for Book Club conversations!

Sue Mays
Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness

4
The second book in the trilogy that started with DISCOVERY OF WITCHES. I am enjoying the time period that the characters have time traveled to and the adjustments they have had to make to appear normal. I am not a fan of the vampire novels that are popular now but I am really enjoying this particular series. Good writing makes for enjoyable reading. I have recommended this series to a infrequent reader and gotten her hooked also.

mary sue skelton
Mudwoman by Joyce Carol Oates

5
I always enjoy this author's books and this one is no exception. Many times throughout the book I have felt she is talking to me and many times I have been unable to break away from a chapter as she has caught my emotions. She has an uncanny ability to express feelings such as anxiety, desire to be loved and fear of abandonment. The story in this book moves right along, and while it isn't a cheerful one, it manages to be uplifting in a certain sense.

Claire McGirr
The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

5
I love the ocean and lighthouses so this setting was special for me. I enjoyed this book very much. The individual reactions the characters have to their unique situation are very heart rendering, and it is an original plot. This would make and excellent book for discussion. I am going to recommend this one to my own book group.

Annette Schmidt
Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks

5
A fascinating historical fiction based on the life of Caleb Cheeshahteaumauk the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. Themes in the book include the treatment of women, and the contrast in the cultures of the Native Americans and white settlers in the 1600's. It is beautifully written and the descriptive passages are memorable.

Martha Brown
A Plague of Secrets by John Lescroart

5
I was just introduced to this author this year and I am trying to catch up with his legal thrillers. Lescroart creates a story that moves at a fast pace with well-written dialogue and well-developed characters. This story involves several secrets and gives the defense lawyer, Dismas Hardy, knowledge of a client's secret that she wants kept at all costs, even if it means her conviction for murder. Actually, Dismas isn't sure she is innocent. Moral dilemmas abound and the story presents a surprise conclusion after tantalizing the reader with information about several characters who may have secrets that could be hidden by multiple murders.

PAULA BARCLAY
Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard

4
With the upcoming election, our book group decided to read this nonfiction piece about President Garfield. It is filled with interesting facts and many of his quotes. You may learn many things about him that you did not know. Garfield was an interesting character.

Heather Larson
These Girls by Sarah Pekkanen

4
Three girls sharing an apartment in New York City live very different lives. Sometimes it's laugh aloud funny other times the book reminds me of those years in my life which weren't very humorous. Good, solid writing and character development by Pekkanen will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. I highly recommend this book.

Carolyn Daigle
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

4
Since I have only recently started reading this book I will rate it with 4 stars. I am enjoying this mystery written in alternating past/present chapters. The past is narrated by the wife while the present is by the husband. I cannot wait to see how it unravels.

Leslie Morrison
The Three Day Affair by Michael Kardos

4
Every year four college friends get together for a weekend of golf and relaxation. But this year the outing doesn’t go as planned. The weekend quickly turns into a nightmare when one of them robs a convenience store and kidnaps the clerk. Bit by bit the relationships between the four friends unfold as old rivalries and jealousies are revealed. Characters are nicely developed mostly likeable. Several times I thought I knew where the plot was going and just when I had it all figured out, it switched direction. I didn’t see the ending coming until the last few minutes.

Heather Larson
Digital Winter by Mark Hitchcock and Alton Gansky

4
This is the story of what happens when the lights go out everywhere but at Donny’s house. Donny is a savant that rarely speaks but managed to crack the code on how to destroy electricity. I would have given the book one more star had their been more about how not having electricity affects the majority of people. This story revolves more around how it affects the government and how they deal with it. If you’ve watched the TV show “Revolution,” you know there is no government after the lights go out. It’s a good solid read full of interesting tidbits that very well may be true like the president has an underground hideaway and so does Bill Gates.

Wendy Catalano
They Disappeared by Rick Mofina

5
I consider this novel to be a non-stop suspense-filled action drama. In a attempt to reunite a broken family, Jeff, Sarah and their 9 year old son Cole take a family vacation in New York City. While visiting Times Square Jeff walks into a shop for a moment and when he returns he finds his wife and son are gone from where they promised to wait for him. Jeff's frantic search begins and quickly turns into a roller-coaster ride involving the police, FBI, Secret Service and terrorists. This story kept me on edge and had me quickly turning the pages to see what happens next. I look forward to reading Rick Mofina's other novels.

Judy Haskell
The Absolutist by John Boyne

5
A gem of a novel about a World War I soldier whose reflections on the horrors of warfare and the additional horrors visited upon those with unpopular political beliefs by their fellow soldiers form the structure of this moving narrative.

Karen Spiess
The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery

5
This is the bittersweet story of a lonely 12 year old girl and the curmudgeonly concierge of her Paris apartment house and how their friendship evolved.

Kay
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

1
Two of the most despicable people in modern lit are Nick and Amy. I guess one could say they deserved each other. The only reason I kept reading was I wanted an ending that would deliver a comeuppance. This book was just awful and fell flat. Just goes to show not all best sellers are worth the time, money, energy or bother. The characters were all crazy in this book.

Glenda Van Wart
The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters by Gordon Dahlquist

5
I read a lot of books, and I'm very impressed by the exceptionally good writing within the pages of this highly original and suspenseful and imaginative story.

Linda Sexauer
What the Nanny Saw by Fiona Neill

4
Don't be fooled by the cover and the publisher's marketing: this is NOT chick lit, and nothing life Bridget Jones or The Nanny Diaries! That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this story of a wealthy family's downfall in the wake of a financial scandal. Told from the nanny's perspective, the reader gets an inside view of the wealthy and privileged. It is both a penetrating and often sympathetic look at the complex personalities and circumstances behind the headlines. Highly recommended.

Millie Thousand
Low Pressure by Sandra Brown

3
Just finished reading the latest Sandra Brown novel which was pretty standard Sandra Brown material. Sexy love scenes, suspense and good characterizations. I only gave it 3 stars because I figured out "whodunit" early on in the story.

Vicki Rogers
Winter of the World by Ken Follett

5
I just started reading this second book in Follett's "The Century Trilogy" and was immediately drawn right in. We once again meet familiar characters from the previous "Fall of Giants" as this book picks up right where the first book left off. It is now the 1930's with the rise of the Nazis in Germany and I am intrigued to see how the five inter-related families will fare in this part of the 20th century. Ken Follett amazes us once again with this well-researched, fast-moving novel filled with wonderful characterizations and historical events.

Sheila Bayley
Justice Waits: The UC Davis Sweetheart Murders by Joel Davis

4
Extremely well written book about a horrible murder that changed a small town. This book caused a long dormant cold case to be reopened.

George Privat
Don't Ever Get Old by Daniel Friedman

4
As the title suggests, the main character is elderly which presents many issues to be explored in the context of this thriller. While some readers might be offended by the fairly gruff exterior of the main character, his attitude and comments are in keeping with his character and provide for entertaining and sometimes funny interactions with other characters in the novel. I found the book to be well written and fast-paced and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys thrillers, especially thrillers that may be a little different from the norm.

Marion Miller
Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

5
What a delightful, well-written book. This book takes place in 1938 and the story revolves around a group of young people who meet by chance and their lives become intertwined. The main character is telling the story and her story parallels the other characters and the times. The book also reflects on the pre-WWII era in America and the Spanish Civil War in Europe.

Raylene Wauda
Still Alice by Lisa Genova

5
This story of a Harvard professor who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's is beautifully written and includes information about the disease without sounding too medical. This disease can happen to anyone, causing much upheaval in the family, and has no cure.

Lynn Jarrett
Buddy: How a Rooster Made Me a Family Man by Brian McGrory

4
I just started this book a couple of nights ago. I was able to get into the book right away. It follows a guy who wrote for the Boston Globe through his first marriage where he gave his wife a puppy for a holiday gift. This marriage ends, but he and the dog go on to a life together. The book opens with him just starting his next life with his fiance (who happens to be a vet), her two daughters, and a variety of animals, including a white rooster named Buddy. They have moved into a new house in the country. Hmmmm, a city slicker moves to the country... I look forward to the frolics ahead!

Lorna
The Neighbor by Lisa Gardner

4
I have been hooked on Lisa Garnder lately. DD Warren, Boston detective is trying to figure out what happened to a wife and mother who just disappeared in the middle of the night. Did she run away? Did her strange husband have something to do with her disappearance? Or was it the convicted sex offender neighbor?

Pat in MO
The Midwife of Hope River by Patricia Harman

4
An easy read, but really good. Delivering babies in the early 1900's and all that comes with childbirth without a doctor or hospital.

Dianne
Hemingway's Girl by Erika Robuck

3
Key West, Hemingway, deep sea fishing and, of course, a love story all combined for a great end of summer read.

Peggy Niles
The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

4
Somewhat predictable. Reminded me of THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN.

Elaine Baxter
Coming Home: A Story of Undying Hope by Karen Kingsbury

5
This was one of the most compelling books on family love and endurance that I have read in a long time. Once I started, I could not put it down. The happiness, joy and sorrow of this family was so heart rendering that I cannot wait to read more from this author. If you need an uplifting in your spiritual life this is the book for you.

Gil Harris
Slumdog Millionaire by Vikas Swarup

5
An excellent book! A very poor orphan boy in India wins a record amount of money on a quiz show. You would think that there is no way he could know the answers to twelve very difficult questions, but he knows because he lived the answers. In the end, will he be cheated out of his winnings?

Gil Harris
43*: When Gore Beat Bush --- A Political Fable by Jeff Greenfield

4
A compelling alternative history novel which assumes that Al Gore won the 2000 election. A very interesting story of what might have been.

Heather
Seating Arrangements by Maggie Shipstead

4
After a bit of a slow start, I became totally engrossed in SEATING ARRANGEMENTS! This is Maggie Shipstead's debut novel and I'm hooked. She's a wonderfully talented writer and I'll definitely be reading her future books.

Coral Harrison
The Roots of the Olive Tree by Courtny Miller Sands

5
This is the story of a woman who has lived to be 122 years and 65 days old. She has her house and her daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter live with her or very close. It is a very interesting book about them. They grow olives and they believe eating and growing them contributes to their long lives. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Michelle Miller
The Lurking Man by Keith Rommel

The premise of this book was totally unexpected in a good way. When I first started reading, I was struck by how much it reminded me of that old horror film from the 70s, "Tales from the Crypt," where the people are shown where they went wrong in life before they go to their death. I was also oddly reminded of A Christmas Carol...that whole "a look at your past" thing and a chance to right the wrongs you committed, but in a much different way than that story. Rommel gives a unique explanation as to why we might do the evil to others that we do. This is not a common horror story, but it's Gothic and features great storytelling.

Oxford Whispers by Marion Croslydon

3
OXFORD WHISPERS has a premise that I really like in a book. A contemporary novel which is also a historical novel, as it switches back and forth from the present to the past. There is also the edition of a famous painting that adds to the mystery of the past. I'm a sucker for books that derive a story from famous paintings. The story of Madison and Rupert and how they are tied to the past are depicted in the William Shakespeare Burton painting, "The Wounded Cavalier." Unfortunately, I wish I could have felt more of a connection with the modern day characters of Madison and Rupert. In all, I would say to give this one a read if you like historical novels and switches from past to present.

A Season of Angels by Debbie Macomber

5
If you are looking for a Christmas book for adults you can not beat the ones by Debbie Macomber. In her book three angels, Shirley, Goodness, Mercy were selected to come to earth to help three different families before Christmas. The twists and turns in the book are fantastic. I can not wait for the next book!

The Gendarme by Mark Mustian

4
Emmett Conn is an elderly man in the last days of his life. He experiences recurring dreams --- or are they memories --- of himself being a Gendarme during the Armenian Genocide (1915-1923). An interesting read.

Joan
Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio

4
A great read with the plot line being told in two voices, Claire from present day and Vera from 1933. A freak snowstorm in May has journalist Claire writing an article for the local paper only to discover it had happened 80 years earlier. While doing research she learned of the disappearance of a 3 year old boy and then the unsolved death of his mother. Claire decides to follow her heart and dig deep into old records to solve this mystery.

Sherrie Payne
The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey

4
I have not finished it yet, but am really enjoying it! I love the feisty main character, Gemma, and the way she handles what life throws at her.

With or Without You by Domenica Ruta

4
WITH OR WITHOUT YOU by Domenica Ruta moved me more than any book since THE GLASS CASTLE by Jenette Walls. I can't help feeling sad for Domenica and the life she has endured up to the present time. She is a good writer and wasn't afraid to "tell it like it is." I hope she continues to write.

Norma Dwyer
Under The harvest Moon by Samantha Jillian Bayarr

5
This is the 7th (and final) book in the Jacob's Daughter series. It's a very good read.

Sue Border
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

4
I like this book because it is real psychological suspense. It kept me guessing until the end.

Kimberley Disnute
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

4
I am still engaged in reading this book and so far this is a thoroughly wonder-filled story. It is pure escapism. I hate that the real world exists right now!

Jeff Fitzgerald
Lost at Sea: The Jon Ronson Mysteries by Jon Ronson

4
If I had to describe Lost at Sea in one word, it would be "sad." It's essentially a series of loosely related essays about sad hopes, sad dreams, sad delusions, and sad regrets.

Jane Squires
Christmas At Holly Hill by Martha Rogers

4
You think you got problems! This book will encourage you. Clayton deals with being an ex-con, Merry still loves him even though her dad was a sheriff, Lily turns out to be in trouble, and poor four-year-old Jonathan loses his family when their house burns. The judgmental status of some in church still happens today and not just to ex-cons. It happens to many people. A story of Christmas blessing but so much more. Clayton gets a second chance, Merry believes in him all along, and little Jonathan gets his Christmas wish of a family --- thanks to Jesus for answering his prayers. This is a page turner that draws you in. I feel truly blessed for reading it.

Solo by Hope Solo

5
I could not put this book down. It is intriguing to read a rags to riches story of an up and coming soccer goalie. In this book, Hope prevails over many obstacles to make her one of the top female athletes in the world, I have found myself getting mad at her teammates, some of the women's soccer fans and people in general. I am rooting for Hope to win her starting position back and screaming at her team mates for how they are treating her. As a female athlete I can relate to where she is coming from and what is happening around her and at times you really get angry with the adversary. I am pulling for Solo to come through in the end and win the 2008 and 2012 Olympics but those who are true fans already know the outcome.

Infinite Quest by John Edward

5
This book is about developing your psychic intuition to take charge of your life. It is a step by step guide on developing your intuition, self-awakening, and so much more. It is a clear and easy to follow guide. It has so much information for you to help understand the whole process. I have enjoyed this book very much. It answers a lot of questions.

The Ancient Secret Of The Flower Of Life - Vol. 1 by Drunvalo Melchizedek

5
This book speaks of our ancient past. It helps to awaken knowledge and is extremely interesting. There is a Vol. 2 as well. I am enjoying this information very much.

I Hate Everyone Starting with Myself by Joan Rivers

5
I didn't particularly love Joan Rivers' last book but, for some reason, this one is cracking me up! She is as irreverent as ever and this time around her humor matches my own, so I am really enjoying this book!

Linda Johnson
You Remind Me of Me by Dan Chaon

2
I thought I would love this book since I absolutely loved the author's AWAIT YOUR REPLY. Chaon is still a good writer, but I was quickly soured with this book by violence in the first few pages. The initial event was bad enough, but the response to that event soured me even more. That set an uneasy tone for the rest of the book and, it wasn't the end of the violence. The basic story has to do with two men who were born of the same mother, but one was given for adoption. The other knows about the first and as an adult seeks out his brother. I won't stop reading Chaon, but I know now, how sensitive I am about what I read.

Julie
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

4
This is a Young Adult novel, but I am really enjoying it. It's about four children out of hundreds who pass a very difficult test which the readers take along with them. Their challenge to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and inventive children could complete. Great fun.

Lori
Riding Lessons by Sarah Gruen

3
Well-written book, but since I'm not that interested in horses, probably not the best choice for me. However Gruen has great character development.

LINDA BASS
Bound by the Mist by Lisa Kumar

5
Cal Weston had visions of strange beings in a mist that swirled around them but no one else seemed to see them. That was when she was twelve and in one moment of regret she told her friend and it was all over the school that she was crazy! Her parents even moved to another town in Wisconsin, placed her in therapy, and doped her with drugs. To make matters worse, she still had erotic dreams about a boy who now was a man with long flowing black hair! Prince Relian of Eriannon had dreams of a russet hair girl who saw them at one of their celebrations and for ten years the girl/woman haunted his dreams. He had lived many centuries being an elf and he knew his land was losing its magic and their enemies the the evil changed elves.

Lori
The Forgiven by Lawrence Osborne

4
This book seemed like a Moroccan BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES to me. There were no likeable characters, and it was scary to see the depiction of barely under-the-surface hatred of "infidels" by the local population as well as the callousness of most of the Westerners in the story. I flew through the book despite its darkness and found it something of a cautionary tale.

CHRISTEN BEZOSKI
Trust Your Eyes by Linwood Barclay

3
Despite all of the hype around this book, I wasn't that drawn into it. It definitely had a unique story line, but in comparison to other books I've ready lately, it didn't pull me in.

Jud Hanson
Dracula by Bram Stoker

5
I finally got around to reading this and it was well worth it!

Kathy Martocci
Mudbound by Hillary Jordan

5
Wonderful novel about post WWII life on the Mississippi Delta. The basis of the story is formed around racism and the hardships of farming. Mudbound has it all --- tragedy, compelling characters and the strength of the human spirit.

Maureen H
Hot Under Pressure by Louisa Edwards

3
This is a fun book to read and if you like the show Top Chef, then you will like this book. It features a romance between rival chefs who have a cook off and make a sexy deal. You have to read to see what the deal is! The recipes in this book are good also.

Pam Dean
The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton

4
New book by Kate Morton has similar plot line of family secrets uncovered. It took me a while to get into it, but it's very well written just like her other books.

SUE BECKLEY
THE SHINING by STEPHEN KING

5
This is an old favorite that I am rereading in preparation for DOCTOR SLEEP, Stephen King's sequel to THE SHINING coming out in 2013.

patricia zashkoff
Act Of Treason by Vince Flynn

5
This is the second book I have read by Vince Flynn and I plan to read more. His novels seem to be taken from current headlines and include themes on treason, terrorism and loyalty. I love his main character Mitch Rapp --- he is like a super hero with a lot of rough edges and a temper to match. I would recommend his books to anyone who likes intrigue and action.

Diana Thomas
Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth

4
Decided to pick this up and read it after seeing the new series on PBS. The show so far is sticking to the book, which is nice. I couldn't put the book down, and stayed up until 3am to finish it. I definitely recommend reading it.

Sandy McCullough
Sea Change by Karen White

5
For Ava Whalen, a new marriage and a move to St. Simons Island mean a new beginning. But what she doesn't realize is that her marriage will take her on an unexpected journey into the deep recesses of her past that will transform her forever. I loved this book!!

Monkeewrench by P. J. Tracey

5
Ten years ago, Grace, Harley, Annie, Mitch, and roadrunner formed a family of sorts when students went home for the holidays and since they had no family, they adopted each other. Then Grace's boyfriend was killed along with her two roommates and the little family fled Atlanta's college with Grace wanted by the FBI. Ten years later they settled in Minneapolis and formed the Monkeewrench company with complete new names, then some one was acting out their computer game in real life by killing people in the same way as their game! The big city cops thought Grace was the killer since she invented the game and nothing could sway some to believe her innocence... This book is a must read! I hated to put it down --- even to sleep!

Fran O
Bending Towards the Sun by Leslie Gilbert-Lurie with Rita Lurie

5
A powerful mother-daughter memoir which chronicles the lives of three generations of women. Much like Anne Frank's family, Rita Lurie's family is forced into hiding in a cramped attic during the Holocaust. Unlike Anne Frank's family, Rita's family survives the ordeal and must face moving forward in their lives in a world that has forever changed. The story follows Rita's family through two additional generations, looking at the inter-generational impact of such a traumatic history. Beautifully told and written, this book is a powerful tale of one family's experience through trauma.

Wendy Catalano
The Taken by Inger Ash Wolfe

5
An incredibly talented author, Inger Ash Wolfe, gives us a fast-paced, well-written mystery for a second time with "The Taken". Genuine characters and DI Hazel Micallef has to be one of my favorites. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series!

Debbie M
The Innocent by David Baldacci

3
As usual, a novel by David Baldacci shakes my belief in the honesty of the government. This story centers on a government-sanctioned killer who becomes the hunted. A teenage girl enters into Will Robie's quest for answers to the confusion. I felt that the actual mole was a likely choice given Will's involvement with the individual. Baldacci tells an interesting story in a format like James Patterson with the short chapters that drive a reader to reading longer. Baldacci utilizes more detail in his writing and presents more dimensional characters.

Debbie M
Silver Bells by Diana Palmer

2
During the holiday season, I attempt to read new seasonal books. This book seemed interesting, but I was mistaken. The book contains two novellas that are best described as trashy romance stories. I completed one of the stories, MAN OF ICE, and that was too much. The story involves the feelings and passion between a stepbrother and stepsister, with each hungry for sex and for one another. Not much development of characters or setting or plot in the novel, and a waste of time, plus I never encountered Christmas in the story.

Audrey Shaffer
Earthly Delights by Kerry Greenwood

4
What a delightful read! Corinna Chapman is a plus-sized woman and a baker. She lives above her bakery, with three cats. Her friends and neighbors include a trio of computer nerds, a Wiccan, two aspiring actresses, a retired professor and a dominatrix of undetermined sexual origin. One early morning, she finds an overdosed junkie in the alley beside her shop. The encounter introduces her to Daniel, a virile vision of masculinity…who likes women with a little meat on their bones. This book was laugh-out-loud funny, while drawing me into the mysteries. I don’t like to cook, but the herb bread recipe at the end of the book is tempting. Corinna’s friends are as interesting as she is, and I can’t wait to read their next adventure.

Suzanne Gonneville
So Much Pretty by Cara Hoffman

5
What a great story! It was suspenseful, dark and impossible to put down. I liked Cara Hoffman’s style, especially her descriptions of scenes (which are unbelievable). And what a surprise ending; I didn’t see it coming!

Carole
Characters In Search of a Novel by Molly D. Campbell and Randy Palmer

5
Although a picture may be worth a thousand words and the illustrations in this book are excellent, it is the descriptions of the the colorful characters that will remain with the readers. Each chapter describes a person and gives a peek into his or her personal life. Within the pages of this clever book are a moonshiner named Loretta Squirrels, Hester Packmore whose strawberry shortcakes are delectable, a Cat Lady who suffers a sad ending, and many other memorable folks. Some of these characters might remind the reader of a favorite teacher--some definitely will not. This book really is people-watching, just in a different form than waiting at the airport. Let's hope each character does find a spot in a great American novel.
