Had me laughing out loud. Sookie’s domineering mother, Lenore, has kept a secret which Sookie accidentally discovers and sets out to find answers. Two stories, one from the past that intersects with the present, and seeing how Sookie changes even at her age.

Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood
Narrator Name: R. H. Thompson

Rating the Audio Performance

The success of an audiobook is 50/50 author/reader. I can't tell you how many audiobooks I've listened to that have been ruined by the reader, using an improper accent, mispronouncing words, just not suited to the text. Barbara Rosenblatt is a fabulous reader of Lisa Scottoline’s novels for example. This is an amazing story- a retelling/ adaptation of THE TEMPEST, and the author picked the reader. She got it absolutely right!
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline

This book is part of the Hogarth Press Shakespeare Project, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth started in 2015 with Jeanette Winterson’s retelling of THE WINTER'S TALE. This version of THE TEMPEST concerns a demoted theater director who gets his revenge on his political enemies by staging an outrageous version of THE TEMPEST in a prison. Hilarious and moving at the same time.

Zola, Mark and Todd are attending law school only to find out it's being run by a New York hedge fund operator who is charging huge tuition fees for an inferior education. Rarely do graduates pass the bar exam, and if they do, they are rarely hired by upscale law firms. The three start working as unlicensed attorneys, raking in cash money. They're soon found out and are running from the FBI.

Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Narrator Name: Gerard Doyle

Rating the Audio Performance
4
Gerard Doyle does a fine job narrating the audiobook, although I thought the voice he used for Saphira was unnecessarily “growly” (can’t think of a better adjective). He especially does a fine job of narrating the battle scenes, adding a sense of apprehension, danger and excitement all at once.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline

This is # 1 in the Inheritance series. I am clearly not the target audience for this fantasy novel. However, kudos to Paolini for creating this complex world, with many characters and beings, mythology, history, diverse landscape and complex social structure. I definitely see the appeal for the intended audience, and my nephew really liked this one.

Although Suzy Jackson doesn't stand out in the crowd, she did justice for this novel and I have no complaints.

For some reason the audio version of this book kept me more interested than when I picked up the hardback. Although not to the same extent of his older novels, ASHLEY BELL has that weird paranormal/fantasy twist that us Koontz fans so love. Not my favorite novel of the past few months but a solid showing.

If you enjoy the banter between husband-and-wife duo, Chip and Joanna Gaines of HGTV's Fixer Upper, you'll enjoy listening to THE MAGNOLIA STORY. Joanna primarily narratives this audiobook version of the book but Chip contributes.

This often humorous book tells the story of how the couple met and the growth of their Magnolia empire based in Waco, Texas. It includes some childhood and growing up stories through 2015-16 and the success of the television show. The final disc is of uncut conversations captured during the recording of the book.

This actor has a pretty deep and gruff voice. He did a great job of making different voices, but sometimes it was tough to guess which ones were female (esp. a character named Terry...which can be male or female.) Overall, damn good job. I also like this actor a lot.

Hamlet by William Shakespeare
Narrator Name: Michael Sheen, Kenneth Cranha, Juliet Stevenson and Ellie Beaven

Rating the Audio Performance
5
BBC Audiobook performed by Michael Sheen (Hamlet), Kenneth Cranham (Claudius), Juliet Stevenson (Gertrude) and Ellie Beaven (Ophelia), and a full cast. I really dislike reading plays. I much prefer to see them performed live by talented actors, the medium for which they are written. The next best thing to a live performance, however, must be an audio such as this one, with talented actors taking on the roles and really bringing the play to life for the listener.

Wonderful accents -- especially loved Trent. Often audiobooks with two storylines being told back to back are difficult listening, but the transition from one point of view to another was easier with the voices of these two narrators.

Although not the type of novel I tend to read, the characters in this one were convincing and the tempo as slow as the waters around Edisto. The coincidence of events were perhaps a bit contrived but it was frightening to read in the end notes that the orphanage was real. Spent a bit of time researching Georgia Tann and her involvement in child trafficking. A book that makes me interested beyond the story is worth the time listening.

The story was very timely. It was about a wonderful couple who dreamed of coming to the United States for many years. The main character finally comes and it is quite awhile before he can bring his wife and son over. The family encounters may moral and every day problems which comes between the husband and wife. Life in the U.S.A. is not always all it is cracked up to be.

Rating the Book's Content/Storyline

Man (Ted) contemplates killing his cheating wife (Miranda), with a stranger (Lily) as his accomplice. This story was told in alternating perspectives by Ted (who discovered his wife, Miranda, was cheating on him with their contractor, Brad), Lily (the stranger he meets at an airport), Miranda (the cheating wife)...and later Kimball (the detective). There were so many twists and turns in this book, and I literally gasped out loud more than once. Bravo to the author for a well-told psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page!

This was a good listen. At the same time it was appalling and disturbing to hear what she went through. Like the title states, it really is unbelievable what our country went through during the 2016 presidential campaign (especially from her viewpoint on the Trump side). Worth a listen, but if you don't want to hear anymore about the 2016 presidential campaign, skip it. Otherwise, you will be angry again (or still).

Band of Brothers by Stephen E. Ambrose
Narrator Name: Cotter Smith

Rating the Audio Performance

The subtitle is all the synopsis anyone needs: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest. Ambrose profiles the officers and enlisted men alike. Narrator Name: Julia Whelan

Rating the Audio Performance
4
This was the best part of the book. I thought the narrator did a great job with a different voices and emphasis.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline
5
I was very engaged in the first half of this book. Characters were introduced and developed, and a dystopian world was built. All very typical of Nora's usual attention to detail. Then there is a disastrous confrontation and the book's focus completely changes, continuing with only one main character, and nothing more is seen or heard of the rest of the characters. I was frustrated because I was invested in all the characters and wanted to know what happened to them. There is a rush to the ending with an emphasis on the mystical. I normally love Nora Roberts. This reminded me of so many books I have already read with the typical Nora characters thrown in. I will be avoiding her paranormal and trilogies.

Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen
Narrator Name: Bruce Springsteen

Rating the Audio Performance

A biographer who reads their own book truly adds to the experience. The written words convey a life of joys, sorrows and experiences and Mr. Springsteen’s voice conveyed that and more as he told his story. I felt like I knew him and was listening to a friend talk about their life, warts and all.
Rating the Book's Content/Storyline

I think everyone feels they know everything there is to know about Bruce Springsteen. We were all wrong. He tells a story that is at times a little heartbreaking, sad, funny, and uplifting. We hear details and stories about his life that other people might choose not to tell. He also makes us laugh and, quite honestly, be very happy about who he is and the success he has attained. It’s a very personal account of, and by, one of the heroes of my generation and I would recommend it highly.

Set in 1600's Amsterdam, the main character is based upon an historical figure whose cabinet house is in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum. Good character development that addresses 21st Century issues in a 17th Century community. Nella receives the cabinet house as a wedding gift from her new husband, who was talked into marrying her by his sister. He is deeply involved with men and has not interested in having the responsibilities of a wife. As a successful and rich trader, he is a leader in the community and provides financial support to his family. However, the secrets of the family are well hidden. Clear writing, but shares some characteristics with a romance novel.

This story is about two women who were friends from the beginning of the motion picture industry in Hollywood. I liked learning about Mary Pickford, Marion Frances, Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin during the time of silent films and the transition to talking movies and how their careers were affected by the rapid changes. You can't help but feel sorry for Mary Pickford, who was probably the first casualty of Hollywood to go from being crazy popular to being forgotten. The book was a little long and it took awhile for me to get into it, but I'm glad I did and finished.

The plot is intricate and had more than one surprise for the reader.

Social worker (Jane) must decide whether sterilizing an indigent 15-year-old girl (Ivy) is the right thing to do. Will Jane stand up for what she believes? Or agree with her superior? Set in 1960s NC, NECESSARY LIES is a fictionalized account of how social workers used the Eugenics Sterilization Program to sterilize those deemed to be unfit parents. The story begins with a woman finding these cryptic words in a closet: "Ivy and Mary was here." But, where was here? And was there a reason why they were hiding in a closet? This powerful story will break your heart and then mend it. In this type of moral situation, can one really care "too" much about their clients and the repercussions?

3.5 stars. This is a quest novel, a coming-of-age story, and a road trip adventure, populated by one of the most eclectic cast of characters in literature. I loved Nayeli, whose smile is like the sunrise. She’s honest, fierce, loyal to her friends, and determined to succeed in her mission. The novel is translated from Spanish to English, but still includes much Spanish and even some “Spanglish.” This may be challenging for readers who don’t speak Spanish.
