What is your favorite cookbook?

Better Homes & Gardens from the 1970s and BETTY FURNESS WESTINGHOUSE COOKBOOK 1960. I have approx 200 cookbooks, but use recipes from these two more often, not counting the two recipe file boxes I use continually.

This is tough because I *collect* cookbooks and have over 5000 of them. You may think this odd, but my favorite is something called GRANDMA'S FAVORITE, which was a cookbook compiled by my family and published in 2002. All the family favorites are in it!

My favorite cookbook is COOKIN COUSINS FIVE GENERATIONS OF COOKING TRADITIONS and it is our own self-published family cookbook. We put it together in 1991 for a big family reunion. It includes old family pictures of our grandparents and parents and an extensive family tree. In a large family like ours, it is invaluable for those marrying into the family and trying to get all of the relationships straight. The recipes are almost all easy enough for any level cook. When dining at a cousin's home and eating something tasty, the inevitable question comes up, "Is it in "The Book"? Seventeen years later, we are all still using our copies of "The Book" and scrounging up copies for the new brides in the family. It is a highly worthwhile project and a great way to honor the great cooks in the family who may have passed on.

My favorite cookbook is still the first cook book I got, which was THE BETTY CROCKER COOKBOOK, which was given to me by my mother. It's nearly fifty years old. another favorite is PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH COOKBOOK OF FINE OLD RECIPES --- it is fun to read and hold lots of memories.

The cookbook I reach for most often is BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS NEW COOKBOOK: Limited Edition "Pink", with the special section, "Eating for Life." This includes a special breast cancer awareness and risk reduction section and supports the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

I am also trying the recipes from ANIMAL, VEGETABLE, MIRACLE, by Barbara Kingsolver, recommended to me by a good friend.

There are so many! It depends on what I am cooking. I love my Italian cookbooks, especially those written by Maryann Esposito, as she cooks the way my mother and grandmother did. I love Jeff Smith's Frugal Gourmet cookbooks also. Rachael Ray is a new favorite of mine for weeknight cooking. I also have an entire cookbook devoted to Risotto and another devoted to Soup. I use those a lot at this time of year. My cookbook shelf runneth over... I love them all for different reasons and spend many happy hours reading them and planning my meals. At this time of year, I try to make a "new" recipe each week, and then we vote as to whether this is a "keeper" or not.

My favorite cookbook is one I made myself using collected recipes from newspapers, magazines and friends. I slip them into transparent notebook pages and group them into categories.
Every once in awhile, I go through them and remove ones that I haven't used recently.

At the moment, it is Copeland Marks's THE KOREAN OF THE MORNING: Classic Recipes from the Land of the Morning Calm." There is a recipe in there for Spicy Tofu that is to die for --- we have been trying to eat more healthy foods and this one is a winner in our house.

My favorite cookbook is the BETTY CROCKER COOKBOOK that I received as a shower gift when I got married in 1968. It's a loose leaf book with many stained and even missing pages pages, and no cover now, but the new "Betty" just isn't the same. Since I got married and moved to Panama for the first 2 years of my marriage, I couldn't have cooked without Betty and the pictures in the cookbook and I couldn't call Mom!

The original JOY OF COOKING, which was given to me as a wedding gift in May of 1953. It's held together by duct tape and a big rubber band, but I'd not even consider getting the newer edition. Old habits die hard, as the old saying goes. I love that book.

We go to Cape May on vacations and I love the recipes in the AMERICAN COUNTRY INN AND BED AND BREAKFAST COOKBOOK. I subscribe to Taste of Home Magazine and I have a collection of about 8 years' of cookbooks with their recipes. I also use THE BETTY CROCKER COOKBOOK for favorites.

My all time favorite for general cooking is THE BETTY CROCKER COOKBOOK. But I also have my own cookbook that I have added to over the years, which has old family favorites (my great grandmothers persimmon pudding recipe) and remakes of food I have eaten abroad (African Irio --- a potato/corn/spinach dish) and Cheese Puffs from Bolivia.

My favorite cookbook is Betty Crocker. I even have a learn-to-cook book for children by Betty Crocker and that was my first cookbook and I still have it.

For all "how to" questions and some old favorite recipes, I depend on THE BETTER HOMES AND GARDEN NEW COOKBOOK. I'm not sure what version I have, but I've had it since 1976.

To cook a meal that always gets raves from guests, I turn to VINTAGE VICKSBURG, a cookbook by the Vicksburg Jr. Auxiliary.

For party and special meals, I open the pages of AMBROSIA, the newest cookbook by the Vicksburg Jr. Auxiliary. This one is especially fun because it contains quirky stories of the people of Vicksburg and parties where these dishes have been served. I can read these and laugh while I cook!

I like the Cajun Cookbooks of South Louisiana taken out of the newspaper twice a year. I think the name is Flavors of Acadiana. It's in the Lafayette Louisiana Daily Advertiser newspaper. 

I also like the quarterly cookbooks from Kraft, Kraft Food and Family. They are like magazines with real food that's easy, has simple ingredients, can be enjoyed by the whole family, and most importantly --- QUICK!
