THE GIFT OF RAIN by Tan Twan Eng. This first-time published author starts his career with a book that captures the reader from the beginning. It's a tale of World War II, told from the perspective of a 16 yr. old boy in Malaya, who is befriended by a Japanese visitor to the island. As the boy who grows into a man, he discovers his the truth about his mentor. A book of great friendship, of sadness; a book of the study of human nature and our interaction with each other. A compelling volume.

WORLD WITHOUT END --- I was determined to read this book during the summer as I am a teacher and do not have the ability to stick with a thousand-page book and keep up with my job. I am glad I read it as it was almost as fascinating as PILLARS OF THE EARTH. The depth of character study is not present, but the societal study was enlightening.
