What book (you can name up to 3) did you buy in spite of reviews that were less than stellar?

Maureen from Middletown
I purchased The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd even though it did not have the best reviews.

Until I Find You by John Irving
The reviewers were right. It was not one of his best; in fact, in my opinion, it was awful. This was a case of buying the book because of the author and not the reviews.

In spite of readers' reviews I found Goodnight Nobody byJennifer Weiner less than stellar, as well as Panic by Jeff Abbotand The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory.

The Firm by John Grisham
When it first came out, I read a review in the newspaper about it. The story sounded interesting, but the reviewer didn't think much about it. As soon as I found the book, I read it and was not sure why the reviewer was negative. I think it is Grisham's best.

If I like the author, I will buy the book regardless of the review.

I bought Christ The Lord by Anne Rice despite the bad reviews because I like her books. I haven't read it yet (I'm saving it for vacation next week).

I bought Stephen King's latest, The Colorado Kid, in spite of negative reviews. They were right. What a disappointment.

Sharon from Georgia
I read lots of reviews, and SELDOM do magazines or newspapers print negative ones. I would like them too, although, just as with movies, books represent different tastes and styles, and you cannot judge by someone else's preference and opinion. Also, I do not like reviews about popular authors (Grisham, Patterson, Picoult, etc.) who I know I will read regardless of an opinion expressed by one person.
