Which political book have you enjoyed most and why?

Bushworld by Maureen Dowd

Sharon Weber
American Dynasty by Kevin Phillips kept me up late, and scared the bejesus out of me. This is a plot for a movie. George Bush and his forebears are underhanded, arrogant and worse.

Of all the political books I have read, I would say Worse Than Watergate by John W. Dean is one of my favorites.

My favorite political book so far has been the very entertaining and informative Cronies: Oil, the Bushes, and the Rise of Texas, America's Superstate by Robert Bryce.

Of all the books I have read from Bush's Brain to the Molly Ivins classics on Bush, this one has been the best written from a reader's viewpoint, is thoroughly researched and documented (most of the Bush books are) and if you ever wondered about the oil economy and how it relates to TX and by default, to the rest of the world, this is the book to read. I would give it a 10!

I have been enjoying My Life by Bill Clinton more than any other political book. It is surprisingly personal and interesting, and gives the reader a rare look into the evolution of a President.

Another book worth mentioning here is Triangle: The Fire That Changed America by David Von Drehle. This is a fascinating look at NYC politics, and perhaps America's first 9/11 after the disastrous fire that killed over 100 garment workers. Excellent writer and a wonderful, intelligent book.

Bushworld by Maureen Dowd. I liked it because there are some behind the scenes information about the Bush administration that I never knew. The book was also funny at times.

I can't say I have "enjoyed" any political book. They either make me mad because I don't agree with them or because I do and can't understand why the truth isn't evident to every intelligent person. Biographies of political figures, on the other hand, are usually fascinating.

I am not sure if you would consider this a political book per se but I do. The book of the year, for me politically, absolutely must beThe Hornet's Nest by Jimmy Carter. This is the first novel ever written by a president and it is so well done. Jimmy Carter is brilliant. I recommend this book to anyone who reads.

So far, the political book that I have found to be most intriguing/appalling is House of Bush, House of Saud by Craig Unger. It is allegedly well-documented, certainly many footnotes, sources sited, etc. If but a portion of the allegations within the book are true, oh, my, it boggles the mind!

My favorite political book of the year is actually a political novel:Cybercash by C.J. Howard. It's about a president who wants to abolish the use of cash and instead have a government credit card that everyone must use. It makes one wonder what is happening to our privacy rights, when everything about us is on computers that can be "hacked" by anyone, or worse, by the government. And the ending is a real shocker!

This year I read Hillary Clinton's Living History, which I greatly enjoyed. Although I know it was one point of view, it was a very interesting one. Her book was very informative on how the government is run and how rich people outside the government influence policies and directions that are taken by those in public office. All in all, it was a very interesting and somewhat disturbing look at politics.

My favorite summer political book is The New American Empire by economist R. Tremblay. This a very well written book about the danger that the United States will stop being a republic and become an empire.

Ten North Frederick by John O'Hara is a great love story with a political theme.

I loved Bushwhacked and have read Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them and purchased David Corn's book, The Lies of George W. Bush as a gift for a friend who is enjoying it.

Right now I'm reading My Life by Bill Clinton. It's VERY good! It's well written and very interesting. He's had a fascinating life!

Jon Iverson
Michael Beschloss edited a fantastic book on politics, Taking Charge: The Johnson White House Tapes, 1963-1964. Here we see politics as actually practiced: sometimes noble, sometimes shameful, but always fascinating.

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them by Al Franken. A close second would be The Clinton Wars by Sid Blumenthal.

Who Let The Dogs In? by Molly Ivins. They must have a great sense of humor in Texas where George W. Bush is referred to as "shrub." Very amusing book, y'all.

My favorite is Fanatics and Fools by Arianna Huffington. She is intelligent, witty, very informative, and --- best of all --- I agree with her.

Barbara Sloan-Hendershott
The only political book I have found worth my reading time isAmerican Soldier by General (ret.) Tommy Franks.

Bill Clinton's book, My Life. I read it and listened to it on CD. Great read, interesting story.
