Aside from reading something to review for your site :) I'm reading "Martha Peake" by that wonderful writer, Patrick McGrath. I had the privilege of hearing Mr. McGrath read at McIntyre's book store in Pittsboro, NC, last month and believe me - not only can he WRITE a story, he can READ it as well, in a beautiful English accent and with such passion and feeling as to hold the entire tiny roomful of listeners completely spellbound and dying for more once he'd finished. He read almost an entire chapter then quite generously stuck around to sign books and chat. What a lovely man! As for "Martha Peake", it's McGrath at his usual macabre best. It ranks up there with "The Grotesque" and "Dr. Haggard's Disease", but the difference this time is that Mr. McGrath has set his novel during the American Revolution! He said an historical novel was a "first" for him but, if it is, he's done a marvelous job evoking the fervor of the pre-war times, both in setting and in character. I can't wait to finish it, but on the other hand I don't want to because I'll have to wait a couple more years 'til his next work! :( Oh well, I highly recommend this nonetheless.

I'm reading "The Animal Factory," by Edward Bunker. First published in 1977, I figured if it was good enough to republish 23 years later when it was being made into a movie, maybe it's a good read. The cover touts the book as "the lean and powerful prison classic," set in violent, gang-ruled San Quentin. Twenty-five-year-old Ronald Decker has been caught with two hundred kilos of marijuana and forty ounces of cocaine, and prosecutors decide to make an example of him. I've just started reading, so I can't make any remarks beyond the fact that I'm enjoying it so far and I'm glad it was republished.

Sebastian Faulks's "Birdsong" -- an erotic novel by an Irish writer that first appeared in 1993, a WWI novel.
I saw it mentioned in "Vanity Fair" in May, and although I generally feel that I get "stung" on books VF touts, this one seems an exception. I'd previously read Faulks's "The Girl at the Lion D'or" (c1998) -- also touted in VF. While I was not particularly impressed with "Girl," "Birdsong" impresses me. If it's still in publication, I intend to try to buy it for my personal library.
I found it interesting that, for a novel that's been out since 1993, there was a lengthy "hold" list on it at the New Orleans Public Library. VF must have more local readers than I imagined.

I am about half way through the book and still don't understand what is going on. I will finish it as sometimes the end ties things together. I enjoy Tom Clancy and have read all of his novels. I think that his other writers are not writing in Clancy's style.
