How do you incorporate books into your holiday celebration?

As important as reading is, it's always been the custom in my family started by my parents, to give the gift of a special book (binding, pages, illustrations, etc.) to each member of the family at Christmas. Of course, the gift of a book with no inscription just wouldn't be special.

My daughter and I always read "The Christmas Kitten" by James Herriot. A warm short story that just leaves you feeling good! And of course,"Yes Virginia there really is a Santa Claus" . We also do at least one reading of "The night before Christmas..." I'm not sure who enjoys these more. My son loves it too and he is 15!

Your top ten list is interesting; I would add Kazuo Ishiguro's When We Were Orphans. Perhaps it was not published in 2000....I would also add Ha Jin's Waiting, but again, it may not be current. I so appreciate The Book Report!

We read them during the season, when friends gather or when decorating the house. Favorites are A Cup of Christmas Tea and The Polar Express

I always give all the children a book every year for Christmas. This year I gave books to the grown ups who I know like to read. I think reading is very important to everyone.

I love this question - we still read nightly with our two children, now 7 and 11. Beginning in December we read The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson, and The 24 Days before Christmas by Madeleine L'Engle. What Child is This, by Caroline B Cooney was added last year. We also read the Night Before Christmas, and Jan Brett's the Wild Christmas Reindeer. And I usually pull out a beautifully illustrated Stopping by A Woods on A Snowy Evening as well. We all love this tradition!

When my daughter and son in law take a weekend for themselves and we keep the 3 grandchildren, we hole up in our big bed with holiday cookies, hot chocolate and " those Christmas books" that were Grandma's when she was a little girl.
