Walter L. Larimore, MD

Walter L. Larimore, MD, was in the private group practice of Family Medicine for 20 years (delivering more than 1,500 babies), prior to becoming Vice President of Medical Outreach at Focus on the Family in February 2001.

After receiving his MD from Louisiana State University School of Medicine (New Orleans) in 1977 (with AOA honors), he completed a General Practice Teaching Fellowship at Queen's Hospital in Nottingham, England, and his Residency in Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. He practiced four years in the rural Smoky Mountains (Bryson City, North Carolina) before moving to Kissimmee, Florida in 1985. He co-founded Heritage Family Physicians with Dr. John Hartman in 1988.

Dr. Larimore is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a member of the American Medical Association, the Christian Medical Association and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. He has been a member of the Olympic Sports Medicine Society and a Charter member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Larimore holds voluntary faculty appointments at four medical schools (University of Colorado, University of South Florida, University of Florida, and Duke University) and is licensed to practice medicine in Florida and Colorado. Dr. Larimore has been listed in "Distinguished Physicians of America" (1992), "The Best Doctors in America" (1998, 2002), "Who’s Who in America" (2000), and "Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare" (2002). He was awarded the "Thomas Johnson Award" by the American Academy of Family Physicians (Outstanding Family Practice Educator - 1996) and "Outstanding Educator of the Year" by the Christian Medical Association (2000). He has been awarded the AMA’s Physician Recognition Award every year since 1982. Since 1995, Dr. Larimore has been a medical journalist, initially hosting the daily, live, National Cable TV Show "Ask the Family Doctor" on America's Health Network and then on Fox's "The Health Network." At its peak, the show was seen nightly in more than 22 million American homes. His "Apple a Day" 60-second features have been shown on "The Health Network" and "Discovery Health." He has been said to have more "...actual on-air TV experience than any physician in the history of television." (Joe Maddox, President and COO, America's Health Network) At America’s Health Network, Dr. Larimore hosted the first worldwide live Internet birth in June 1998 and was also awarded the prestigious "Gracie" Award in 2000 by the American Women in Radio and Television.

Dr. Larimore has been married to his wife, Barb, since 1973—although they’ve known each other since they were 5 years old and attended kindergarten together. They have two grown children and live in Colorado Springs.
