Dennis Cooper

Dennis Cooper was born on January 10, 1953, and grew up in the Southern California cities of Covina and Arcadia.In 1976 he founded the legendary "punk" magazine and publishing house Little Caesar, which he ran until 1982. In 1985, while living in Amsterdam, he began a 10-year-long writing project that he had been planning since the age of 15, The George Miles Cycle, an interconnected sequence of five novels that includes CLOSER, FRISK, TRY, GRIND and PERIODall published in the United States by Grove Press. The Cycle has now been translated into 18 languages.

His post–George Miles Cycle novels include MY LOOSE THREADS, THE SLUTS (winner of the French literary prize the Prix Sade and the Lambda Literary Award for Best Book of Men's Fiction for 2005), and his most recent novel, GOD JR. Other works include the short story collection WRONG, several collections of poetry, including THE DREAM POLICE: SELECTED POEMS '69-'94and ALL EARS: CULTURAL CRITICISM, ESSAYS, AND OBITUARIESCooper's fiction has been the subject of two books: ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK: THE DANGEROUS ART OF DENNIS COOPER (FDU Press, 2006), edited by Leora Lev, which includes essays by William Burroughs, Michael Cunningham, John Waters, Dodie Bellamy, and many others, as well as WRITING AT THE EDGE: THE WORK OF DENNIS COOPER (Sussex University Press, 2008), edited by Paul Hegarty and Danny Kennedy.

Cooper currently spends his time between Los Angeles and Paris, where he has collaborated with the French director Gisele Vienne on four highly acclaimed theater works, mostly recently JERK (2008). A limited edition collection of Cooper's new poems, titled THE WEAKLINGS (Fanzine Press), was published in 2008. He is a contributing editor of Artforum Magazine and editor in chief of Little House on the Bowery/Akashic Press, a book imprint focusing on collections of fiction by emerging North American authors.
