It's a wonderfully well-written novel about life in New York City in 1886 centered on the haves, who have enormous wealth, and the have-nots, who resort to crime to get by.
Rating: It's a five.
Describe the book in three words: Stylishly written. Well researched. Compelling plot.
Would you recommend?: I have already recommended it to individuals who are good readers, and to my book clubs because it's totally satisfying.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: Belfoure builds his story like the architect he is --- from the ground up first with a concept, then a design and finally fleshing it out with realistically drawn characters against an intriguing background. His characters grab readers right from the beginning and continue to fascinate them until the final pages. There is nothing static about his characters. They change according to the situations with which they are faced, and we never lose interest in their lives.
Brenda Z. of Wilmington, DE

Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: This book takes you back into an earlier age, with insights into the wealthy and the poor. It shows you how greed can corrupt anyone. A family finds out that they are not as well-bred as they thought, and everyone has a sordid secret!
Laureen C. of Shorewood, IL
I really enjoyed HOUSE OF THIEVES. I thought it was well written. [SPOILERS] Really liked the characters...especially Charlie, Nolan and Granny. It was interesting how he mixed some history in with the storyline. At times when Charlie was with Eddie, I felt I was reading Oliver Twist. I loved Granny going for her opium fix and letting Julia hang out with Nolan. I half think she knew he wasn't from a well to do family but didn't care. The fact that they all wanted to be like "regular" people and forego the properness of high society made you like them more. It was fun when Helen learned of Cross' activities and instead of being outraged or scared, she just involved herself and both enjoyed it. This brought to mind the movie True Lies. George’s errors brought his entire family together in a unique and unlikely manner. I did not like George but assumed the reader wasn't supposed to. [END SPOILERS]
Rating: I would rate it a five.

I absolutely loved it! One of the best books that I have read this summer! I couldn't put it down because I kept wanting to read on to find out what happened next. As a history graduate student, I also really appreciated the research that Belfoure did to ensure the authenticity of the historical places, people, etc. that he referred to throughout the book. This is really one of the best historical fiction books that I have read of all time!
Rating: Five (being the highest rating).

I loved it!
Rating: Five.
Describe the book in three words: Historical, upper-rich, early-mob.
Would you recommend?: Already have.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: HOUSE OF THIEVES is a book written about the upper society in the late 1800s. This book is about a newly graduated from Harvard son who racks up gambling debts and the father who pays those debts by performing criminal acts to save his life. There is also a younger brother and sister who get mixed up in their own types of issues with crime. This book reminded me very much of problems not that different from today's youth and things they get into and the parents that would do anything to help them go straight.
Lori C. of Worcester, MA
I can't use enough superlatives for HOUSE OF THIEVES --- please tell me Mr. Belfoure will be writing another novel....

Would you commit a crime to keep your family from death? When young George Cross became addicted to gambling in 1886, he had just graduated college and made his parents proud, but he ran up a debt of forty-eight thousand dollars to a loan shark! He tried to not let his parents know how deeply in debt he was because those days, to cause scandal in the wealthy society and be shunned and shamed was the kiss of death, and he couldn't bear to show his shame and ruin his family. New York society wasn't very forgiving nor were they very accepting of "new money." Back then, there were over 20,000 children turned out of the streets to make their own way when parents couldn't afford to feed them. George was intrigued by teaching these children and was overwhelmed at how quickly they learned when he used gambling tricks. If his parents knew about his sordid life of gambling in unsavory and questionable houses or having a woman of ill repute as a lover…. He shuddered at how far he'd fallen, but he tried and couldn't quit.
John Cross, a respectable member of high society and an architect, was visited by a hoodlum dressed in a suit that would cost him a year’s wages. He wanted to throw him out upon sight, but when the man told him that his boss had work for him and mentioned his eldest son's name, John was curious. When he met Mr. Kent, he was impressed with his savvy, until he was told that he needed to pay off George's debt by helping him rob his wealthy clients or his family would be killed. How could a man wealthy beyond means be involved with the scum he hired? What made him take risks for anything when he could simply buy it?
Normally I don't read this genre, but Mr. Belfoure captured me by the very first chapter! Wonderfully written, it depicts the "haves and the have-nots" with clarity not regarded in today's society. With three Cross siblings dabbling in the underbelly of New York, the three get an eye-opening experience! I must add this author to my buy list and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!
Rating: Five.
Describe the book in three words: Very well-written.
Would you recommend?: Yes, will recommend on Amazon, GoodReads, and LibraryThing.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: Well-paced book that had me rapidly reading.
Carol W. of Plano, TX
I loved it because my grandmother lived during the Gilded Age in a high society family so I already know about the rules about leaving calling cards and not being alone with a gentleman! I thought that the author's experience in architecture added an extra dimension to the story.
Rating: Five stars.
Describe the book in three words: American historical fiction
Would you recommend?: Definitely! I have a close friend whose husband is an architect and I think that they would both enjoy this story.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: This book is a glimpse into the Gilded Age, with the high society and the lowest rung too. A thriller, and a very difficult book to stop reading or to forget. I loved the architectural references and the characters in the family.
Kathy C. of Wendell, NC
I loved it!
Rating: Five.
Describe the book in three words: Intriguing, educational, historical.
Would you recommend?: Yes because it's really good!
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: Great historical thriller set in 1886 New York that mixes real people with fictional characters. Wonderful family dynamic with great insight into high- and lowbrow society and filled with awesome architectural descriptions.
Dawn T. of Portland, TN
I enjoyed HOUSE OF THIEVES. I found it to be fast-paced and engaging. The architectural and historical details were spot on, and I found myself to be caught up in the evolution of the characters. It was also interesting delving into the social dynamics/expectations of the time according to class and gender.
Rating: n/a
Describe the book in three words: Engaging, exciting, gripping.
Would you recommend?: I would most definitely recommend this book, and my own book club is in fact planning to read it upon release. I feel it offers many topics for discussion and is a pleasing choice for everyone, male and female.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: HOUSE OF THIEVES is a fast paced thriller about a "respectable" family who get unexpectedly thrown into the underworld of 1880s New York. Due to enormous gambling debts, architect John Cross must make very difficult choices to save his son and family from a very undesirable gang boss who threatens their very lives. As the story progresses, one hopes that John will be an unlikely hero, but the characters must all determine what they are capable of, and willing to do in order to save their family status, and themselves.
Paula P. of Lansing, MI
I really liked HOUSE OF THIEVES.
Rating: I would probably rate it a high 4.
Describe the book in three words: Enticing, interesting, informative.
Would you recommend?: Would definitely recommend it to my friends and family.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: I learned quite a lot of unexpected things about the levels of society in that era. At times I found that I did not want to put the book down --- it was quite a page turner. [SPOILERS] The thought that John Cross would use his knowledge of architecture to commit crimes was a very original concept in my opinion. [END SPOILERS] I wonder if this has actually been used in real life. I did think George (John’s son) was kind of a whiny, mousy person and wasn’t a fan of him. Loved the whole society levels and traditions, too. Very good! All in all I loved the book. I think it would fit all ages of people and would bring about some good discussions in book clubs.
Julie B. of Martinton, IL
Rating: I give this book 4.5 stars
Describe the book in three words: Enveloping.
Would you recommend?: Would recommend this book to friends and family...in fact I have.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: This book was captivating. From about page 25, I couldn't put it down. This author brought the time period alive in full color; the characters became my friends. So rich I felt like they were my friends, or I was sitting on a stoop people-watching. Full of drama, emotion and dread. I love this book.
Helen M. of Tewksbury, MA
I did like the book. I especially enjoyed the setting. Learning about New York in the late 19th Century was fascinating. I never saw the film Gangs of New York but now I will. The ways of the upper class and the poverty of the poor made such a contrast. The problems of the Cook family mirror today's issues. I can't say I would have done the same thing if I were in their shoes. Hopefully in today's world a person with a gambling problem can get help. My favorite character was Julia. I admired her spunk. My least favorite character was Helen. [SPOILERS] It just did not seem plausible that she would become an active, enthusiastic partner so quickly in the robberies of friends' houses. [ END SPOILERS] The novel was a fast read. I even took the book to the gym and read while on the exercise bike. I just had to know what would happen next.
Rating: I rate this book 4.5.
Describe the book in three words: Three words: educational --- the history of the times; addiction --- the power of gambling that can cost you to lose everything, even causing the murder of a family member; family --- the need to protect one's family at all cost
Would you recommend?: Yes, I have already spoken to two people at the gym who asked me what I was reading. I will also post a positive review on Twitter. I belong to two book groups: I will share my thoughts with my fellow members and suggest we consider reading it. One group might, but the other group will be a harder sell --- only because some of the members like audio, LP, or library copies.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: I would say this is a fast paced thriller with something for everyone. You do your best trying to do the right thing, but things can go so very wrong. Your children will make their own way despite your wishes. Never say never for you never know what you will do when you are faced with life-threatening situations.
Amy N. of Clarence, NY
HOUSE OF THIEVES was another well-crafted, well-written book by Mr. Belfoure. I love the architectural angles (no pun intended) --- he knows his business!
Rating: I would rate HOUSE OF THIEVES a 4.5 on a scale of 1-5.
Describe the book in three words: Clever, page-turner, involving.
Would you recommend?: Yes, I will highly recommend this book to friends.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: For friends who have not read THE PARIS ARCHITECT, I’d say without giving away too much: It’s set in a great period to be a wealthy person in New York --- the late 1880s. Filled with the Who’s Who of NY Society, your image is everything. The main character is a prominent architect and those skills come in handy when a situation needs to be quietly resolved. Keep turning pages because it’s engrossing all the way to the end. If they’d read THE PARIS ARCHITECT, I’d say: It’s got the same great character development with real conundrums. Architecture plays another key role in this well-plotted and well-written novel.
Dottie R. of Denver, CO
I was intrigued by the story, the double standards of classes --- elite and poverty level --- and the secrets that need to be kept by both to survive. It is always interesting to read about the moral choices people make and the consequences that develop because of those choices.
Rating: 4 stars.
Describe the book in three words: Intriguing, fast-paced, interesting.
Would you recommend?: I would recommend this book to a friend. It covers an interesting period in time when status and class are forefront for all members of society. It is exciting, leaves you wondering about how you might respond to and act in a variety of circumstances, and recognizes the secrets kept within families.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: This historical fiction novel is set in the late 1880s in New York City. An architect father becomes an invaluable addition to a criminal group when he assists in robbery to pay off his son’s gambling debts. However, not only does the father lead a double life, but other members of the family do as well. Moral choices, suspense, curiosity and wondering how you yourself might react in these situations all make this a fast-paced memorable read.
Marsha N. of Fullterton, CA
The HOUSE OF THIEVES is an eye into a world of great wealth and great poverty.
Rating: 4.
Describe the book in three words: Fascinating, exciting, thrilling.
Would you recommend?: Yes, if they enjoyed his previous book I think they would also enjoy this one.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: You will be swept up in a world where a parent jeopardizes his reputation and that of his family to save his son’s life. The thrill and exhilaration of crime is as threatening as a gambling addiction. Look around you and wonder which one of your friends has a secret life.
Toni G. of New Hartford, CT
Interesting cast of contemptible characters. Even the good guys aren't so good. Historically interesting era of New York. Fast-paced. [SPOILERS] Have to suspend reality to enjoy the ending at the Statue of Liberty. [END SPOILERS] Puts in mind Jeffrey Archer's Clifton Chronicles or a PBS series like The Paradise with its criminal element/clubs/gambling/liquor/hot goods. It has the feel of SISTER CARRIE. Likeable characters, you'll root for them --- especially Charlie and Eddie. And George --- what a guy. The prison break scene is film material.
Rating: Rating: 4.
Describe the book in three words: Fast-paced, historically interesting, New York.
Would you recommend?: Would recommend to a friend as a light read.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: Nothing puts the spice back into a marriage like crime. John and Helen Cross left their Astor-glam lifestyle behind (when they had the urge) and brought the rest of the family into a relatively (pun intended) cozy underworld of their own making. Nice to have your cake and eat it too. Amusing but a little far-fetched. Entertaining read, makes you wonder if Wright, Ghery, and Gaudi had shadow lives. Hope Belfoure hasn't scared away his clients. But then, all the better --- he'll have more time to write.
Kathy F. of Stokesdale, NC
I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Rating: 4.
Describe the book in three words: Intriguing, fascinating, enjoyable.
Would you recommend?: Yes! It's a great read.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: Fascinating period piece about NYC in the late 1800s. Complex, well-drawn, relatable characters. Interesting story line.
Pamela M. of Albertville, AL
Really, really liked it.
Rating: 4 out of 5.
Describe the book in three words: Fascinating, American, Dickensian.
Would you recommend?: It is an easy read, captivating from the first and hard to put down. Great historical fiction but also a realistic picture of a family lacking knowledge of each other.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: This is a great picture of the Gilded Age, the manners and restrictions of the upper class in New York and the seamy underbelly of the same period, both interwoven with a realistic look at the pollution and lack of sanitation in an age known for its ostentatiousness. The plot is realistic: How far would a person go to protect his family? Yet a big questions arises: When corruption and morality collide, what wins?
Bobbie D. of Boca Raton, FL
HOUSE OF THIEVES was fun.
Rating: Rating book a 4.
Describe the book in three words: Entertaining, clever, fun.
Would you recommend?: Would recommend it.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: Insight into the rich and famous of the time, lots of secrets, and families aren't always what they seem. I couldn't help but compare Mr. Belfoure's two books. In THE PARIS ARCHITECT, the architect helped save people he never knew by hiding them with his expertise as an architect. He did receive compensation. But! in HOUSE OF THIEVES, he was saving his own son and subsequently his family. [SPOILERS] And then he really liked how good he got at planning the robberies, and involving his wife ended up as a boon to his marriage. His children and their friends also ended up in his schemes which continued on. Who would expect such things from the rich and privileged of the time! Somehow, the murders he witnessed were just a necessary evil, though he never would do this on his own. And the people he stole from were always compensated for their losses. [END SPOILERS] Felt THE PARIS ARCHITECT had more meaning and would be my book of choice.
Marion P. of Temecula, CA
I thought HOUSE OF THIEVES was a very interesting book with loads of the city's history included.
Rating: I would rate it a 4.
Describe the book in three words: To describe the book I would use the words authentic, suspenseful and unstoppable.
Would you recommend?: I would recommend this book!
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: The author has done considerable research to present an unusual story of a family in a developing, old New York City, taking us from the magnificent mansions of the elite to the extremes of the depths of gambling dens. When I first read of the son's gambling problems, I thought, "Oh, no, not the same old same old!" However, the twists and turns of the plots keep you turning the pages, and I particularly liked the author's trick of often ending a chapter with a cliffhanger, but with the next chapter going to another part of the story, so that you must keep reading to find out what happened.
Elizabeth A. of Springfield, IL
The book took me two days to read. I didn't enjoy reading it until the second day. The premise of an entire family having double lives was hard for me to believe. But the second day of reading pulled it together. I truly and thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were well written. The historic background made it more believable. A well written and exciting book! I liked it!
Rating: I would rate the book 4.
Describe the book in three words: Godfather of 1880s.
Would you recommend?: I would recommend this book to my friends. I think they would enjoy the story about a family of thieves. I loved Grandma in the opium den! As a matter of fact, it will be the topic for next week's Ladies Lunch.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: This book is a delightful look into the criminal world of New York in the 1880s. You get to peek into the parties of the unbelievably wealthy. You get to peek into the underworld of New York's criminals.
Mary M. of Rochester, NY
I always enjoy a good historical fiction and this book fit the bill. I liked the beginning and learning about the Cross family, poor relations of a prominent Knickerbocker family. It is 1886 and the Cross son, George, has just graduated from Harvard. George loves to gamble. He's good at it because he is a mathematician --- NOT! So when the son's gambling debts are owed to a gang called Kent's Gents, Papa Cross, an architect, is asked to use his inside knowledge of high society mansions, museums and banks to repay his son's debt. It is a very lucrative plan. [SPOILERS] It turns out that all members of the Cross family have an interest in the illegal and criminal acts of NYC. The middle was a little bit of "Oh, I don't want to rob this mansion, but since you insist, here's how to do it." [END SPOILERS]The ending was entertaining.
Rating: 4/5.
Describe the book in three words: Interesting, entertaining, historical
Would you recommend?: Yes, I have recommended to my friends who love historical fiction.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: See above.
Shawn H. of Saint Peters, MO
HOUSE OF THIEVES was interesting, very detailed, in-depth.... I liked learning about "New York life" for a wide variety of characters from all walks of life. I liked seeing John change over the course of the book.
Rating: On a scale of 1-5 I would rate it a 4.
Describe the book in three words: Intriguing, scandalous, thrilling.
Would you recommend?: I would recommend the book but maybe not for young readers...some stuff like the opium dens and bawdy houses might not be for the younger readers. Also the book is a tad bit long.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: John is an architect and one day his life is turned into chaos when his son accumulates a massive amount of debt, so he comes up with a plan for a great robbery.

Would you recommend?: I would and have recommended this book to friends.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: The book is about an architect who has to pay his son's gambling debts by robbing the upper class mansions and museums that he is familiar with. He has to stay one step ahead of both the police and the gang of thieves and killers that the debt is owed to. It all takes place in 1886 New York.
Betty B. of Clayton, NC
I thought HOUSE OF THIEVES was a wonderful historical novel. In the beginning I was more interested in the history of the story. [SPOILERS] I did find it inconceivable that a whole family would become criminals, especially his wife. [END SPOILERS] However, I did enjoy the entire book.
Rating: I would rate HOUSE OF THIEVES a 4.
Describe the book in three words: Intriguing, historical, thrilling.
Would you recommend?: Yes, I would recommend this book to a friend who enjoys historical mystery.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: This book is an excellent historical novel that describes the depths a father will sink to in order to save his son. The son has a gambling addiction which led him to owing money to an unsavory person. The other children also have friendships with people who are from a lower class. Excellent read. I was pleased to be able to read this book.
Donna K. of Eureka Springs, AR
Very well written and good story line. I learned a lot about NYC's gilded age and the Knickerbockers. Things I never knew.
Rating: 4.
Describe the book in three words: Descriptive, Dickensian, informative.
Would you recommend?: Yes.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: A Charles Dickens-like description of the Gilded Age of NYC as seen through the eyes of an architect and his family, all suffocating from high society social rules.
Kathy H. of Lincoln, CA
I read the first half of HOUSE OF THIEVES in an afternoon. [SPOILERS] Except for the severed head (Godfather style), the plot seemed predictable. I struggled to find time to finish the book. Thankfully I had a commitment to read and report on the book. The second half of the book was fun. I really enjoyed (sometimes laughing out loud) at the struggle and evolution of the Cross family as they straddled the line between the elite, privileged lifestyle and the underworld, discovering each family member's escape role and the coming together in acceptance. My favorite character development was George Cross --- the realistic delivery of his addiction and in the end his reconciliation with both his family and his gambling. [END SPOILERS]
Rating: 4.
Describe the book in three words: Survival, risk-taking, acceptance.
Would you recommend?: I will recommend HOUSE OF THIEVES to my book club as I think it will elicit a great discussion of family dynamics --- 1880s vs 2015 style. Also, I’ll recommend it as a fast/fun read, making HOUSE OF THIEVES a great book to take on vacation or read as an audio book.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: HOUSE OF THIEVES is a contrast between a public life of strict rules known to all and a private life of risk-taking and secrets played out and accepted by the Cross family. A life of privilege, family pride and the ties that bind the Crosses together are threatened by the actions of a son with an addiction for gambling. The story emerges as each family member straddles both worlds risking to hold on to the expected societal world while at the same time challenging the "Knickerbocker code" for brief moments of liberation.
Ellen E. of Rockville, MD
I enjoyed the portrait of New York's architecture, and the class mores of NY society in the 1880s are displayed in vivid detail. [SPOILERS] For this reason I could overlook the far-fetched device of each family member becoming engaged in a different criminal activity. [END SPOILERS]
Rating:4.
Describe the book in three words: Vivid architectural fiction.
Would you recommend?: Already have because of the historical detail.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer:HOUSE OF THIEVES is a vivid portrait of the elites and underworld of New York in the 1880s. Belfoure's gift is making the history, architecture and geography of his setting characters in his story.
Anne B. of Albuquerque, NM
Fascinating and intriguing novel which I enjoyed.

I really enjoyed HOUSE OF THIEVES. I was quickly absorbed in the story and wanted to find out what would happen to all the Cross family members. I also found it interesting that it was set in 1886 New York.
Rating: I would give it a 4.

I was surprised that I really liked it. Normally like contemporary novels.

Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: Told them it was a wonderful story depicting the gangster era of NY. Great cast of characters. Enjoyed seeing the society elite mixing with their underlings and enjoying the experience even growing because of it.

Truthfully, I enjoyed THE PARIS ARCHITECT more than HOUSE OF THIEVES because I enjoyed the storyline more. I loved the development of characters and enjoy reading about Nazis and the Holocaust better than this time period. That being said, I also enjoyed this book, but here were my problems with this novel: I didn't think it was believable in parts. Some of the details in the beginning of the novel were excessive and overbearing but some of the more important details, especially when it came to character development and character intentions, were lacking. [SPOILERS] I had a really hard time believing that this entire family would choose to be thieves and then be so sneaky about it that they all didn't know. [END SPOILERS] I also think the ending seemed a bit hurried and I didn't feel the great climax at the end like I did THE PARIS ARCHITECT’s. What I loved about this novel was the attention to detail based on research. I can see that Mr. Belfoure likes architecture as it comes across in these two novels. I love his devotion to research on the time period and culture. It seemed historically accurate and interesting. I've always enjoyed suspense novels with characters who live double lives and eventually get caught because as a reader, you always want them to finally get caught. Even though I enjoyed his first novel better, this was interesting and entertaining --- all the marks for a good read.
Rating: I would rate it a 4.
Describe the book in three words: Intriguing, dangerous, inviting.
Would you recommend?: I already have recommended it to several friends and to my book club.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: This is probably the exact conversation I've already had with a friend: This book is by the same author as THE PARIS ARCHITECT and reads just as well. Although I didn't like it as much, it is still a great read because it is a good mystery, well-researched, and interesting. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and please let me know what you think about it.

I really enjoyed reading the book. It is not a book I would have picked up judged by the name/cover, but I have been to NYC and I liked the history aspect of the book and was interested in where the book was going and how it was going to end up for the family.
Rating: 4.
Describe the book in three words: History, morality, money.
Would you recommend?: Yes, I have already told people about the book and I would recommend it.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: I would agree that it is a mixture of THE AGE OF INNOCENCE and Gangs of New York. It is also about stepping out of the class into which you were born and living in another. It is a book about the greed for money and what lengths people will go to do obtain it. I would summarize the book thusly: [SPOILERS] The oldest son, who was interested in math, got involved in gambling and owed $48,000. The father, who was an architect, had to work with a gang of thieves to pay back his son's debt. However, in time, the father and mother began to like stealing from the wealthy. Even the younger children had friends on the other side of town. The uncle comes back to live in NYC and he is a Pinkerton/detective who is trying to solve the crimes. He gets killed by the bad guys. The father and son, in order to protect the family, hunt down and kill the bad guys. The family continues to steal from the rich, and are a gang themselves at the end of the book. [END SPOILERS]

I liked the thieves more than the upper class folks. [SPOILERS] The main character's wife really was the epitome of her namesake Helen of Troy. The architecture of the buildings and the distinction of the classes between rich and poor was very evocative. I wanted often to skip over the parts of the storyline that were not set in the seedier parts of NYC or the robberies themselves. [END SPOILERS]
Rating: 3.5
Describe the book in three words: Roguish, evocative, beguiling
Would you recommend?: Yes. Even though I found parts not up to par with ARCHITECT, it was still a very well-plotted and descriptive read.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: This is a story about a prosperous man and the secrets his children keep from their parents and the parents keep from their children. This a story of high society turned on its head as one of its own switches sides and takes up with the high-end gangs of NYC.
Melanie S. of Long Island, NY
What I enjoyed most about the book were the descriptions of NYC during this time period, the 1800s. What I didn't like about the book was that it seemed focused primarily on organized crime and its brutality. I did not find that appealing.
Rating: I would rate HOUSE OF THIEVES a 3.5.
Describe the book in three words: Disturbing, lackluster, drawn out (sorry, 4 words).
Would you recommend?: Unfortunately, I would not recommend this book to a friend unless I knew they enjoyed crime stories or if they were very into NYC history.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: HOUSE OF THIEVES presents an interesting picture of the culture and society of NYC during this time period. However, I found the descriptions of heist after heist and murder after murder rather boring. I kept reading, hoping for something more than another killing or robbery. The descriptions of the buildings and their interiors were fascinating, as one might expect from an author who is also an architect. It just wasn't enough to hold my interest for 410 pages. [SPOILERS] That an entire society family, with the exception of the brother who was a Pinkerton, became enamored of the criminal lifestyle --- each befriending a criminal of some sort, be it a pickpocket, a prostitute or a newsie --- seemed contrived, although their characters did come more "alive" when they each broke out of the molds "society" expected of them. I thought it was a good adventure novel set in Victorian era NYC. However, you had to be willing to overlook some pretty big coincidences to really enjoy it. I enjoyed watching Cross planning the crimes and getting away with them. I found the language in the beginning to be somewhat abrupt and non-descriptive, although that improved over the novel.
Rating: 3.5.
Describe the book in three words: Fun, Victorian, unlikely.
Would you recommend?: Yes, I would recommend to certain friends. I would recommend to someone who likes reading Victorian era mysteries or fantasies and reads more for enjoyment that for criticality. I was certainly entertained by it, but [SPOILERS] I found the coincidence of the entire family turning to a life of crime by separate paths to be unbelievable. It would have been much better, in my opinion, if the father had brought in the other family members gradually, or not at all. [END SPOILERS]
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: John Cross must turn to a life of crime to rescue his family from a gang of notorious criminals, and finds he has a real future as a criminal mastermind. The book presents vivid descriptions of the workings of some of the gangs of old New York across their different strata. A very entertaining adventure.
Sherrie P. of Blythewood, SC
I like HOUSE OF THIEVES fairly well. I enjoy historical fiction and getting a flavor of other periods of time. I like the way he gives you the architectural details throughout the story. The story was fast paced with lots of interesting characters. I did think the story got a little far-fetched as it ended. But all in all it was a good read.
Rating: Rate it a 3.
Describe the book in three words: Engaging, fast-paced.
Would you recommend?: Yes, I would recommend this book to a friend. It is an enjoyable read.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: It is a historical fiction taking place in the late 1800s in New York City. You get the flavor of all sides of society in New York at the time with a little crime drama thrown in.
Katherine R. of Woodbury, CT
The book was OK. The writing did not capture me, as it seemed elementary.
Rating: 3.
Describe the book in three words: Unbelievable. Repetitive. Simple.
Would you recommend?: I would recommend this book for a quick read but not for a literary read.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: HOUSE OF THIEVES sounded interesting and historic. Though I learned some things about the time period, the writing was not captivating. It seems unlikely that a whole family would get involved in crime without the others knowing. So the premise was a bit unbelievable.
Carrie E. of Battle Creek, MI
I found it to be fairly enjoyable to read.
Rating: 3
Describe the book in three words: Enjoyable, interesting, amusing.
Would you recommend?: Maybe. It was not one of the best books that I have ever read but it was interesting enough.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: I would tell a friend that it was alright, not the best or worst book I have ever read. I would tell them it would be good to read if they were bored and had nothing else to read. I would tell them that there was nothing that stood out to me about the book.
Jan B. of Evansville, IN
I liked it, didn't love it. It was well-written but I didn't like it as well as THE PARIS ARCHITECT. The author lost me when I couldn't buy into the premise that independently of one another the entire family would get involved in the criminal underworld and enjoy it without feeling any guilt.
Rating:3 stars.
Describe the book in three words: Easy read, fast-paced, entertaining.
Would you recommend?: Maybe --- it depends on whether the reader can suspend disbelief. If so, it can be a rollicking good read.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: As payment for his son's gambling debts, an architect uses insider knowledge to help a gang of thieves pull off heists. [SPOILERS] Meanwhile, his wife and children, unbeknownst to one another, also discover the thrill of a life of crime. [END SPOILERS]Suspend disbelief, and it's a great read that makes the Gilded Age, with its stark contrast between the haves and have-nots, come alive.
Anne G. of Austin, TX
I thought it had some interesting twists and some really good characters.
Rating: For me it was a 3.
Describe the book in three words: Bawdy, intriguing, sly.
Would you recommend?: Maybe. I didn't ever buy into the story but I really liked some of the characters, the schemes, and the architectural connection.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: It's the story of a member of elite society (John Cross) in 1886 New York City who is forced to make questionable decisions in order to protect his family. A lot of attention is paid to contrasting society's haves and have-nots. Everything from debutantes coming out to rat-baiting, pick-pockets and opium dens.
Barbara L. of Dansville, NY
Stilted. I did not like the characters
Rating: 3.
Describe the book in three words: Descriptive of times.
Would you recommend?: Maybe. I enjoyed the background history lessons, but not enough to recommend it.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: It's pretty trite. I could predict each future step in the book. I appreciated the history lessons.
Kerri D. of Fairfield, CT
Having read Edith Wharton, I found this tale without irony or wit, and the characters had no redeeming features. The doubling was interesting, but it makes it seem as the Cross family (and others) had no choice to be in society or a criminal (or poor, valueless).
Rating: I'd rate it a two.
Describe the book in three words: Historically fascinating, depressing, unredemptive.
Would you recommend?: Yes. I work at a library, and those interested in historical fiction/crime would enjoy it.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: It takes place in the Gilded Age of New York in the late 1800s. It is very atmospheric and authentic in its descriptions of the rigid rules and codes of conduct for members of society and the very poor underclass of criminals from Five Points. If you've read THE ALIENIST, this book is of the same general period, when children were often forced out of their homes and had to fend for themselves on the streets. A socially connected architect is forced to use his knowledge of homes to plan robberies to pay off his son's gambling debts. There are moments of great tension and thrills, [SPOILERS] the ending played out at the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty. [END SPOILERS]
Linda D. of Fargo, ND
I did enjoy the historical facts given throughout the book. However, the storyline was not convincing/believable, and there were characters that didn’t contribute anything to the book. I also found the tone of the book too light for the subject matter. Huge disappointment.
Rating: 2.
Describe the book in three words: Pointless, disappointing, dark.
Would you recommend?: Maybe. Just because I did not like the book doesn’t mean everybody else would not like it.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: This book is set in New York City in 1886 and is the story of a respectable architect, John Cross, whose son has amassed a massive gambling debt that is owed to infamous gangster Kent. John Cross is forced to pay back his son’s debt by helping Kent’s Gents to rob mansions, banks, and museums. This book will take you to the worlds of the super-rich as well as the poor.
Carol S. of Westerville, OH
Just OK.
Rating: 2.
Describe the book in three words: Not very believable.
Would you recommend?: Maybe.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: A little disappointing. Didn't seem like a family would all become crooks and live happily ever after. The author was knowledgeable as far as architecture fit into the robberies, but I felt it all too predictable.
Terese T. of Old Hickory, TN
Personally, it was not to my liking. I was excited about this opportunity as I had really enjoyed THE PARIS ARCHITECT. This story line was way too predictable and unfortunately, the prose was not compelling either. I didn't feel like the characters were either lovable or despicable...I didn't feel any emotion towards any of them. I truly love historical fiction, and the references to the Gilded Age in New York was the only redeeming feature of this novel. I really struggled to finish reading and was overjoyed when the last page presented itself. I hate to be so critical, and I'm certain there are readers out there who will enjoy it, just not me.
Rating: Rating: 1.5.
Describe the book in three words: Boring, tedious, dumb.
Would you recommend?: I would not recommend... see comments above
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: My friend, if you like historical fiction, you might like his book. However, there are so many wonderful books out there, I would put this one at the bottom of your list.
Kathleen G. of Ellicott City, MD
I did not find the story believable and there was too much violence. I tried several times to really get into the book and read more, but I gave up. I loved his previous novel and I was very disappointed in this one.
Rating: 1.
Describe the book in three words: Difficult to read because I found the story line unbelievable. I found it impossible to believe an entire family would decide to become criminals because they were bored with their existence.
Would you recommend?: No.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: I would use the answer I gave to the sixth question. I would add the setting of New York's Gilded Age.
Suzy M. of Huntington Beach, CA
I was very much looking forward to reading HOUSE OF THIEVES because I’d read so many wonderful reviews for Charles Belfoure’s THE PARIS ARCHITECT. Unfortunately, I started HOUSE OF THIEVES several times and could not get past 30 pages. Maybe it was the subject matter or all the various characters, but it just didn’t grab me.
Rating: Due to the fact that I didn’t get very far in the book, I’m not sure I can rate it.
Describe the book in three words: n/a.
Would you recommend?: I can’t recommend the book since I couldn’t get through it. However, I will be passing it on to my retired aunt, who is also an avid reader, to see if she likes it.
Describe the book in three sentences or fewer: Too many characters in the first few chapters to keep track of. Did not grab my attention. Book may be geared more towards men.
