Linda Castillo’s Kate Burkholder series is one of my favorites for a couple of reasons. One is that it is set near my hometown. But the primary reason is the manner in which Castillo manages to bring new plots, mysteries, twists and turns to a relatively small area --- the fictional Amish community of Painters Mill, Ohio, in very real Holmes County --- while inserting (as opposed to forcing) bits and pieces of Amish life into the narrative. In this highly anticipated sequel to AN ABSOLUTELY REMARKABLE THING, the Carls have disappeared from Earth as quickly and mysteriously as they appeared. They were robots who came here to provide guidance to earthlings so they wouldn’t destroy themselves. Their presence was comforting to some, but not to others. April May discovered them and learned to embrace them, even though there were many humans who opposed her.
"A BEAUTIFULLY FOOLISH ENDEAVOR is a bold and sharp novel that will keep readers on their toes and fully engaged..."

The Carls disappeared the same way they appeared, in an instant. While the robots were on Earth, they caused confusion and destruction with only their presence. Part of their maelstrom was the sudden viral fame and untimely death of April May: a young woman who stumbled into Carl’s path, giving them their name, becoming their advocate, and putting herself in the middle of an avalanche of conspiracy theories. Months later, April’s friends are trying to find their footing in a post-Carl world. Just as it is starting to seem like the gang may never learn the real story behind the events that changed their lives forever, a series of clues arrive --- mysterious books that seem to predict the future and control the actions of their readers --- all of which seems to suggest that April could be very much alive.

Well written and supremely researched, DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN identifies the key issues, the major personalities involved, and how they played out in the lead-up to the 1948 presidential election. While A. J. Baime starts off with a comparison to today’s issues, the book is strictly historical and laser-focused on the march to November 1948.

On the eve of the 1948 election, America was a fractured country. Racism was rampant, foreign relations were fraught, and political parties were more divided than ever. Americans were certain that President Harry S. Truman’s political career was over. The only man in the world confident that Truman would win was Mr. Truman himself. And win he did. 1948 was a fight for the soul of a nation. In DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN, A. J. Baime sheds light on one of the most action-packed six months in American history, as Truman not only triumphs, but oversees watershed events --- the passing of the Marshall plan, the acknowledgement of Israel as a new state, the careful attention to the origins of the Cold War, and the first desegregation of the military.

How far would you go to save the life of your true love? In HOW TO SAVE A LIFE, Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke explore this concept in a touching novel that contains more than a few Groundhog Day references. It also has a wonderfully imperfect first-person narrator who either lunches with or talks to his mother daily, buttons up his shirts one button too many, and looks both ways before crossing the street --- always. Dom is just not the adventurous type, and he wonders if that is what made him fall in love with Mia a decade ago. Read More

Over the course of five thrillers, he has developed and sculpted Van Shaw into a fully realized and compelling character --- a flawed antihero of sorts who carries himself as a rumpled knight. A DANGEROUS BREED is a one-sit read that may be his best work thus far. Its only “flaw” is that it does not contain a good place to stop reading. Read More
