In the clamor of the Roaring Twenties, taking advantage of certain loopholes in the regulations for residential structures, the Barbizon Hotel was constructed and designated for women only. The notion was more protective than radical, aimed at young women seeking jobs, rather than professions, in New York City and beyond, and showing a strong preference --- through its arcane rating system --- for young, attractive ladies. Yet it would house many budding feminists who influenced later generations. Read More

Liberated from home and hearth by World War I, politically enfranchised and ready to work, women arrived to take their place in the dazzling new skyscrapers of Manhattan. But they did not want to stay in uncomfortable boarding houses. They wanted what men already had --- exclusive residential hotels with daily maid service, cultural programs, workout rooms and private dining. Built in 1927 at the height of the Roaring Twenties, the Barbizon Hotel was intended as a safe haven for the “Modern Woman” seeking a career in the arts. It became the place to stay for any ambitious young woman hoping for fame and fortune. THE BARBIZON weaves together a tale that, until now, has never been told.

About the Book
From award-winning author Paulina Bren comes the “captivating portrait” (The Wall Street Journal) of New York’s most famous residential hotel --- The Barbizon --- and the remarkable women who lived there.
Sylvia Plath fictionalized her time there in THE BELL JAR, and, over the years, its almost 700 tiny rooms with matching floral curtains and bedspreads housed Titanic survivor Molly Brown; actresses Grace Kelly, Liza Minnelli, Ali MacGraw, Jaclyn Smith, Phylicia Rashad and Cybill Shepherd; writers Joan Didion, Diane Johnson, Gael Greene and Meg Wolitzer; and many more. Mademoiselle magazine boarded its summer interns there, as did Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School its students and the Ford Modeling Agency its young models. Before the hotel’s residents were household names, they were young women arriving at the Barbizon with a suitcase and a dream.
Not everyone who passed through the Barbizon’s doors was destined for success --- for some it was a story of dashed hopes --- but until 1981, when men were finally let in, the Barbizon offered its residents a room of their own and a life without family obligations or expectations. It gave women a chance to remake themselves however they pleased; it was the hotel that set them free. No place had existed like it before or has since.
“Poignant and intriguing” (The New Republic), THE BARBIZON weaves together a tale that has, until now, never been told. It is both a vivid portrait of the lives of these young women looking for something more and a “brilliant many-layered social history of women’s ambition and a rapidly changing New York through the 20th century” (The Guardian).

About the Book
The first book in a highly original and delightfully clever crime series in which Queen Elizabeth II secretly solves crimes while carrying out her royal duties.
“[A] pitch-perfect murder mystery… If 'The Crown' were crossed with Miss Marple… the result would probably be something like this charming whodunnit.” – Ruth Ware, author of ONE BY ONE

Unhappy at the mishandling of the case and concerned for her staff’s morale, the monarch decides to discreetly take matters into her own hands. With help from her Assistant Private Secretary, Rozie Oshodi, a British Nigerian and recent officer in the Royal Horse Artillery, the Queen secretly begins making inquiries. As she carries out her royal duties with her usual aplomb, no one in the Royal Household, the government or the public knows that the resolute Elizabeth will use her keen eye, quick mind and steady nerve to bring a murderer to justice.
SJ Bennett captures Queen Elizabeth’s voice with skill, nuance, wit and genuine charm in this imaginative and engaging mystery that portrays Her Majesty as she’s rarely seen: kind yet worldly, decisive, shrewd and, most importantly, a great judge of character.

Recently, fiction has seen an increase in novels exploring women, their relationships and any sadness that can attach itself to both. Writers like Sally Rooney are spearheading this genre, but it’s not new: Last year, W. W. Norton reprinted postmodernist Jean Rhys’ bitingly miserable novels. Megan Nolan has the same bluntness of both writers, but the sorrow within her debut, ACTS OF DESPERATION, is reminiscent of a despairing Rhys protagonist. Read More

James and June forge an intense intellectual bond that becomes an electric attraction. But the love that develops between them as they work to solve the fuel cell’s fatal flaw threatens to destroy everything they’ve worked so hard to create --- and any chance of bringing the Inquiry crew home alive.
A propulsive narrative of one woman’s persistence and journey to self-discovery, IN THE QUICK is an exploration of the strengths and limits of human ability in the face of hardship, and the costs of human ingenuity.
