Thomas Perry is firmly ensconced on my must-read list. He is within hailing distance of completing his fourth decade of writing solid and memorable crime and suspense novels, each of which are sterling examples of how the job gets done. Somehow he finds something new to write about on an annual basis and, at the close of 2019, has presented us with A SMALL TOWN, a satisfying novel of the manifestation of evil deeds and resultant revenge. It is hard to think of a better series than Tim Dorsey’s Serge A. Storms canon. One can pick up and read (or re-read) practically any of these books without worrying about the order and immediately be entertained. The primary characters remain true to form without a miss, and the secondary characters are always memorable, whether or not they are engaging. While the emphasis is on humor, Dorsey also demonstrates a masterful ability to create suspense at some point along the way. Read More

About the Book

BIG LITTLE LIES meets LORD OF THE FLIES in this electrifyingly twisty follow-up to Jane Shemilt’s breakout debut, THE DAUGHTER.

Over the course of a long, hot summer in London, the lives of three very different married couples collide when their children join the same tutoring circle, resulting in illicit relationships, shocking violence and unimaginable fallout.

There’s Eve, a bougie earth mother with a well-stocked trust fund; she has three little ones, a blue-collar husband, and is obsessed with her Instagrammable recipes and lifestyle. And Melissa, a successful interior designer whose casually cruel banker husband is careful not to leave visible bruises; she curates her perfectly thin body so closely she misses everything their teenage daughter is hiding. Then there’s Grace, a young Zimbabwean immigrant, who lives in a high-rise housing project with her two children and their English father Martin, an award-winning but chronically broke novelist; she does far more for her family than she should have to.

As the weeks go by, the couples become very close; there are barbecues, garden parties, a holiday at a country villa in Greece. Resentments flare. An affair begins. Unnoticed, the children run wild. The couples are busily watching each other, so distracted and self-absorbed that they forget to watch their children. No one sees the five children at their secret games or realize how much their family dynamics are changing until tragedy strikes.

The story twists and then twists again while the three families desperately search for answers. It’s only as they begin to unravel the truth of what happened over the summer that they realize evil has crept quietly into their world.

But has this knowledge come too late?

The work of Mike Nichols pervades American cultural consciousness --- from The Graduate and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? to Angels in America, The Birdcage, Working Girl and Primary Colors, not to mention his string of hit plays, including "Barefoot in the Park" and "The Odd Couple." If that weren’t enough, he was also one half of the timelessly funny duo Nichols & May, as well as a founding member of the original improv troupe. Most fans, however, know very little of the person behind it all. They don't know that Nichols was at one time a solitary psychology student, or that a childhood illness caused permanent, life-altering side effects. It is so nice to see David Bengu back in action. Bengu, who is better known as “Kubu” in the fictitious world he inhabits, is a police detective in the Botswana CID. This mystery series has been one of my favorites since its inception, in large part due to its principal character. Kubu is quietly loyal, deeply dedicated and good-natured to a fault --- the term “gentle giant” comes to mind --- while being possessed of a keen and sharp intellect that serves him well in his investigative tasks. Shortly after he joins the CID, the richest diamond mine in the world is robbed of 100,000 carats of diamonds in transit. Police immediately suspect an inside job, but there is no evidence of who it could be. When the robbers are killed execution-style in South Africa and the diamonds are still missing, suspicion focuses on a witch doctor and his son. About the Book

A prequel to the award-winning Detective Kubu series

David Bengu has always stood out from the crowd. His personality and his physique match his nickname, Kubu --- Setswana for "hippopotamus" --- a seemingly docile creature, but one of the deadliest in Africa. His keen mind and famous persistence have seen him rise in the Botswana CID. But how did he get his start?

His resentful new colleagues are suspicious of a detective who has entered the CID straight from university, skipping the usual beat cop phase.

Shortly after he joins the CID, the richest diamond mine in the world is robbed of 100,000 carats of diamonds in transit. The robbery is well-executed and brutal. Police immediately suspect an inside job, but there is no evidence of who it could be.

Does "Kubu" have the skill and the integrity to engineer an international trap and catch those responsible, or will the biggest risk of his life end in disaster?
