I have to admit that this novel’s premise is one of the most unique I have ever come across. The Leesons haven't seen their former best friends, the Braids, in over a dozen years. One day, when Beth Leeson takes a wrong turn while driving her son, Ben, to a football game, she passes by Flora and Lewis Braid’s new house. Coming upon the residence quite by accident isn't the most interesting thing that happens, though. It's when Beth sees Flora leave her SUV and head up the driveway with two small children. Read More

All Beth has to do is drive her son to his soccer game, watch him play and then return home. Just because she knows her ex-best friend lives near the field, that doesn’t mean she has to drive past her house and try to catch a glimpse of her. Why would Beth do that and risk dredging up painful memories? Nevertheless, she parks outside the open gates of Newnham House, watches from across the road as Flora arrives, and calls to her children, Thomas and Emily, to get out of the car. But there’s something terribly wrong. Flora looks the same, only older. Twelve years ago, Thomas and Emily were five and three years old. Today, they look precisely as they did then. Why haven’t they grown? How is it possible that they haven’t grown up?

It is only February, but there have been some excellent books published so far this year. Chief among them is THE GOOD KILLER by Harry Dolan. You should file him at the top of your reading list under “Should be a household name.” I say that based not only on the strength of this new novel, which is perfect in every way, but also on the previous four that Dolan has written.
