Books on Screen

Each month, our Books on Screen feature spotlights movies, television shows, miniseries and specials that are based on books of various genres --- including novels, memoirs, comics, children's books, short stories and poetry --- along with the latest DVD releases.

October 2013

What's the cross between the anticipation leading up to Halloween and your English class? No, it's not a horrifying report card catastrophe...it's October's Books on Screen! Get well acquainted with Shakespeare by going to see a modern spin on Romeo & Juliet or become immersed in the world of a Charles Dicken's classic with Great Expectations. If you want something a little more eerie, Stephen King's Carrie is up on the big screen, or you could settle down on the coach to tune into "The Vampire Diaries" or NBC's new series, "Dracula."

October 2013

Put on your tweed jacket and Gregory Peck glasses, because it's October and we're getting serious! The drama is non-stop, on screens both big and small. Sometimes it's hard to decide between reading a good book and watching a thought-provoking movie or TV show. But with so many incredible books on screen to choose from this month, it's a win-win situation.

September 2013

Need an escape from this recent phenomenon called schoolwork you may find yourself buried under? Head to the theater to see great movie adaptations of some of your favorite books. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2  picks up just where the first animated adventure left off. And if you haven't seen Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters yet, it's still in theaters for you to enjoy!

September 2013

If the shock of returning back to school is taking the most out of you, then a trip to the theater may be just what you need to recharge --- especially if it's to see a movie adaptation of a great book! This month, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 returns us to the world of wacky inventions with food. And don't forget that you can still catch a showing of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and more!

And if you were looking to relax at home instead of venturing out, Iron Man 3 is now out on DVD, as well.

September 2013

Love fall blockbusters or hate 'em, September is an exciting month in theaters and on small screens. It's a great time for the more under-the-radar films --- we're cooling down from all the summer action, and awards season competition hasn't heated up quite yet. And TV is back in a big way, with the premieres of two new shows and the series finale of a much-loved (and soon-to-be-missed) drama. With all that's going on, you will NOT want to miss these books on screen!

August 2013

You've been waiting and now it's finally here! Hitting theaters this August, Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, the movie adaptation of Rick Riordan's THE SEA OF MONSTERS, follows Percy Jackson and his friends as they go on a journey to the Seas of Monsters to retrieve the Golden Fleece and save Camp Half-Blood.

August 2013

Just as the summer begins to cool down (and wind down, unfortunately), the theater heats up with a bunch of great movies you've been waiting for! The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, anyone? Yup! They're finally in theaters this month, along with the adaptations of Tim Tharp's THE SPECTACULAR NOW and KICK-ASS 2 by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.

August 2013

It seems we made it through the heat of July and will be rewarded with a cooler August (although you won't catch me holding my slightly-less-scorching breath). But while things are cooling down offscreen, we can look forward to some hot end-of-summer releases this month --- and I'm not just talking about the Bret Easton Ellis-penned The Canyons.

July 2013

Beat the heat, and head over to an air-conditioned movie theater this July to see The Smurfs 2! This movie sequel features the voice of Neil Patrick Harris (yay!) and of course, those little blue creatures that you absolutely adore. Will the evil wizard Gargamel succeed in harnessing the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence?

July 2013

If you can't stand the heat this July, head to your local movie theater to take advantage of the air conditioning and to check out these movie adaptations. New to theaters this month is The Lone Ranger, featuring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in a Western action adventure, and The Smurfs 2, with the voice of Neil Patrick Harris, among others, becoming those little blue characters you love. If you'd rather stay at home, The Host and Admission are coming out on DVD and BlueRay in July, too.
