This rich, comic novel is cast as an extended monologue. Edna Earle Ponder, one of the
last living members of the Ponder family. Edna Earle manages the Beulah Hotel in Clay,
Mississippi, and when a traveling salesman comes to stay, she tells him the story of her
family. The book focuses on Uncle Daniel Ponder, whose fortune is exceeded only by his
desire to give it away, and who is a constant source of trouble for Edna Earle, whose
efforts to stop him are continually thwarted by his ingenuity.
