Kathy
The Christmas Cookie Killer by Livia J. Washburn

5
I just love this series and cannot wait to read what Phyllis does next to get herself in a pickle. Not only are the stores great but the recipes in the back of the book are fantastic. All of the characters that live in her house, as well as the others around her, make the book funny as well as a mystery.

Marsha
Villa America by Liza Klaussmann

3
This is a fascinating novel based on the lives of Gerald and Sara Murphy and their social crowd which included Hemingway, the Scott Fitzgeralds and several other celebrities. Their lives start out wonderful and then all seem to disintegrate. The Villa America is the Murphy's lovely home in the south of France.

Katie
All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders

3
I had really high hopes for this book and while some of them were met, the ending felt rushed compared to the fully fleshed out first half of the novel. I would like to read another book by Anders as I really like the mix of magic and technology she was going for. It will be fun to see what she comes up with next.

Ron
Troublemaker by Leah Remini

4
A condemnation of the Church of Scientology more than an autobiography, this book made me very angry at the methods used by this unethical group. Tom Cruise is their god and after reading this I will never see another Cruise movie. Remini stayed in this "church" for over 35 years and she admits her stupidity for doing so. However, this was a good read.

Ellen
The Beautiful Possible by Amy Gottlieb

5
The Holocaust, growing up in the 60s and a love triangle.

Rosa
The Travelers by Chris Pavone

5
Wow. I could not figure out what was going on and I couldn't put the book down. Chris Pavone has written another winner. Will Rhodes is a writer for the magazine Travelers. On assignment in Argentina, he makes a regrettable decision that leads to a new, secret life that he has to maintain for his marriage to survive. The story goes back and forth a lot from character to character, location to location. This keeps the pace fast and the read thrilling.

Peggy
The Guest Room by Chris Bohjalian

5
Difficult subject. Excellent book!

Marsha
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

5
My book club loved this book. There were so many themes and surprising secrets. The characters were full of interesting character traits and connections. The discussion was exceptional.

Cecile
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

5
I really enjoyed this lovely book. Although I'm not a huge historical fiction fan, I like Kristin Hannah. I quickly became invested in these two sisters, their lives and the way the war tore them apart and also brought them back together.

Nancy
The Paris Winter by Imogen Robertson

4
The story takes place 1910. It is about a young girl who comes from England to Paris to study painting. She only has a limited amount of money so most of it goes to her painting lessons. There is not much left for food and housing. She is very happy to get a position in a home to tutor a young woman in English. She soon finds all is not as it seems.

Deborah Smith
Amoung the Ten Thousand Things by Julia Pierpont

1
I've read a lot of good reviews of this book. However, it fell short in my estimation. A family is blown apart by an indiscretion found out via the children. I didn't find the story plausible and it was just oddly written in my opinion. The avenues taken in dealing with the family being blown to bits was just off-putting to me. I wouldn't recommend this one.

LINDA
Beth's Acceptance by Tracy Cooper-Posey

5
I received this ARC a few years ago and just got around to reviewing it, but I am sorry I didn't read it sooner! This book is the first of the Trinity Series where Beth Siegel finds there really are vampires, elves, and horrible things that do go bump in the night! Working two jobs and going to college, she never knew what fate had planned for her! I read so fast that I finished way too soon. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Nissa
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

5
This novel is emotional, thought-provoking and a must-read for all ages. I was hesitant about SALT TO THE SEA when I started, thinking it would be depressing and unexciting. That was not the case in the slightest. I was instantly transported to 1945 and brought straight into the lives of our four main characters: Joana, Emilia, Florian, and Alfred. SALT TO THE SEA is one of the most memorable books I have read in a very long time. Highly recommended!

Mary
Blue by Danielle Steel

5
Interesting characters that by chance find each other and give each other a reason to live.

Beverlee
Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner

4
Beautiful writing that is rich with description and emotion. Reading this book was like taking a mini vacation!

Martha
The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson

5
This is a wonderful, well-researched account of the Great Migration of southern blacks to the cities of the North, East, and West. Wilkerson centered her narrative around three of the migrants who told her their stories. In a novel we would consider these as "archetypes." This is a long book, but very readable. A beautiful account of the 6 million blacks who fled the Jim Crow South between 1915 and 1970. A great choice for a book club -- provoked a great discussion in my book club.

Dorothy
The Shepard's Life by James Rebanks

5
A nice true story of long time sheep farmers in The Lake District, England.

Judy
Breakdown by Jonathan Kellerman

3
I have read many of Kellermans books featuring Dr. Alex Delaware and his friend Milo Sturgis. I enjoyed most of them and have a few favorites. BREAKDOWN is not one of them. I felt like the horse running after the carrot that is tied in front of it. I did finish the book and was somewhat satisfied with the ending; the ending is all pushed into a few pages that felt slammed on the table. "There, are you happy now?" Not his best.

Donna
The Island by Heather Graham

2
Missing ships, murder, pirates and a love story. A beach read.

helen brady
A Paris Apartment by Michelle Gable

4
Great read for a book club.

Tessa B C
Hail to the Chef by Julie Hyzy

3
The second in a series of cozy mysteries featuring White House Executive Chef Ollie Paras begins at Thanksgiving and takes the reader through preparations to decorate the White House for Christmas. This was fairly entertaining, but I guessed what was going on FAR ahead of Ollie, and even, apparently, the Secret Service Agent in Charge! Oh well … I read this genre for the escape from reality. And this certainly fills that bill.

Suzanne
Being Mortal by Atul Gawande

5
This book, which deals with the way we can plan and deal with our last years of life, gave me a great deal of food for thought at my age, eighty.

Nina Morse
The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

3
THE GOOD GIRL starts out being quite suspenseful. It is an emotional story about a dysfunctional family told from three perspectives. It was very predictable until the final ten pages. It reminded me of GONE GIRL...maybe, her stepsister!

Phyllis
Madame Curie by Eve Curie

5
What an amazing woman for her time! I am so glad to have read about the life of this outstanding Polish girl who became a French scholar, physicist, wife, mother, and Nobel Prize winner (twice !!) Her biography written by her daughter and translated by Vincent Sheean is beautifully written and recommended for anyone interested in the progress of women's rights.

Joan
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

5
Funny book about a man dealing with life after his wife's death.

Connie
America's First Daughter by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie

5
This story revolves around Thomas Jefferson and his daughter, Patsy Jefferson. It begins with the death of Jefferson’s wife, Martha, leaving behind three daughters, Patsy, Polly, and baby Lucy. Jefferson is left bereft and Patsy takes over the responsibility for her father and sisters. Throughout her life, Patsy becomes her father's unfailing support while maintaining her own marriage and birthing eleven children. A historical novel of America that should be on everyone's bookshelf and required reading in every American history class.

Peggy
The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende

4
This was a very easy read. It was both disturbing regarding the Japanese interment but rewarding that both families survived and flourished and found love.

Pam
Anna and the Swallow Man by Gavriel Savit

4
Beautifully written, poignant story of young Anna, whose father disappears one day in Krakow at the start of WWII. A tall, mysterious stranger saves her from the streets and they set off, walking for years, hiding from soldiers and struggling to survive the war. The ending is a bit ambiguous and leaves the reader to imagine what it means for both characters.

Chris Bush
The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan

5
As usual, Amy Tan delivers a powerful, character-rich novel depicting a culture and time that so many of us are not familiar with. I love all of her novels, and this one was no different...could not put it down.

Thomas Barrington
Filters by Deborah Ailman

4
Thought it was a very good book.

Thomas Barrington
Friction by Sandra Brown

4
I thought it was a very good book. I would recommend it to anybody to read.

Thomas Barrington
Alert by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge

5
I really enjoyed reading this book. His books are always good. I would recommend this book to anybody.

Sandra
The Gratitude Diaries by Janice Kaplan

5
As a long time devotee of gratitude practice, I really enjoyed and appreciated this book. The story is told as the author's own commitment to try practicing gratitude in her own life for 365 days. Hence each application is shared in real life experiences. Not only is this an enjoyable read, but the author undergirds the content with frequent references to scientific findings, lending validity for those who may be a little skeptical. Readers have absolutely nothing to lose, and much to gain by reading this book!

Barbara
The Things We Keep by Sally Hepworth

5
I loved this book and couldn't put it down; I found the writing so compelling! I found myself totally engrossed with the descriptions of Anna and Luke's feelings and frustrations with the progression of dementia. I highly recommend this book.

Mary
The Secret Wisdom of the Earth by Christopher Scotton

4
A good book for readers that want to be protective of the Earth and keep natural resources from being destroyed.

Betty
The Surgeon's Mate by Patrick O'Brian

5
This series continues to amaze me with great characters, historical color, humor and engrossing storylines -- some of the best historical novels ever written.

Muriel
Betrayed by Lisa Scottoline

4
As with Scottoline's other books, this legal thriller keeps one wanting to sit and keep reading until all the facts are known. The only disappointment was that leading character, Judy, did not always respond in the way I thought a person of her age, intelligence, and profession would. It was a good book, however, with a couple of surprises thrown in.

Marilyn Jensen
The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald

4
Being in a book club for over 16 years, this book was so refreshing to read. Small towns often hold many secrets as we find out in this book. Great characters, all intertwined in some way by a tourist who happens to enjoy reading and finds a new life with the residents of this small town. Books and reading can change lives.

Betty
Girl Missing by Tess Gerritsen

5
An earlier book, but still shows Ms. Gerritsen as a talented writer -- she never disappoints. This book was about a medical examiner who goes the extra mile to solve the drug overdose murders of women from a rough area of town. Determined to find the source of the mystery drug killing these women, Kat exposes herself and others to danger when she refuses to back down. Good read.

Marsha
The Ex by Alafair Burke

4
When an attorney is asked to represent an ex-fiancé, things heat up as the facts are unraveled.

Irene Grigas
House of Thieves by Charles Belfoure

5
I read this book for my book club and totally enjoyed it. If you like historical novels this is a good one. I heard they are making it into a movie. We go back to the 1800s in New York City where the streets are full of throwaway children and the rich have their must-do and must-not-do rituals. We are introduced to a family in which the father is an architect with a son that has a gambling problem. The father has a choice to either go along with the king of thieves or have his family killed. Consequently he and the family are turned into a house of thieves. We visit the Bowery and the gambling dens and the treachery of the gangs of New York. Mr. Belfoure wrote THE PARIS ARCHITECT, also a good book.

The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald

5
THE READERS OF BROKEN WHEEL RECOMMEND is such a good book. It spins such a delightful fresh look on a simple yet modern day life, a place where we would all be delighted to dwell and read to our hearts content...

Jud
Motive by Jonathan Kellerman

3
Good but not a favorite.

LINDA
A Thousand Miles to Freedom by Eunsun Kim

5
I won this book and agreed to give it an honest review. I was so caught up in Eunsun Kim's plight that I worried about her and the brave struggles of her family, since her father and her grandparents starved to death in their North Korean villages due to a famine that swept the country. The dictator needed to control his people and monitor all news about his country that would shame their regime. Escaping to China, the three women believe they could have a better life only to find mistreatment, but at least they had food -- but could they live like this?

Lynn W
Did You Ever Have a Family by Bill Clegg

4
June Reid loses her entire family on the morning of her daughter's wedding. Moving between characters traumatized by the accident could have been confusing, but Clegg adroitly reveals actions, secrets and emotions, culminating in a healing ending.

Linda
The Wolves by Alex Berenson

4
John Wells is gunning for Aaron Duberman, a billionaire who was planning to pull the United States into a war with Iran. The President told Wells he would take care of Duberman, but since Duberman was a major contributor to his campaign, nothing was done. Duberman has escaped to Hong Kong and his mansion is high on a hill and difficult to access. Wells is determined to take him down and failure is not an option. Although I love Berenson's books, it took a while to get into this one.

Linda
Mistress by James Patterson and David Ellis

3
This would have been a great book if not for all the trivia that the main character mumbles about throughout the book. Ben operates a small online newspaper in D.C. and is outside his friend’s apartment when he sees her body falling off a balcony. Knowing he was in her apartment and the police will consider him a suspect, he flees. As he tries to make sense of what happened, he opens a can of worms, and not only does he have the CIA and DC police after him but also the Russians have starting shooting at him. Ben knows he needs to find out the truth before his life is ended.

Linda
Falling into Bed with a Duke by Lorraine Heath

5
A great love story between a woman destined to be a spinster and a gentleman rogue. It took a determined woman to make a man see her for who she really was and once he did, he never wanted to look away.

Linda
Daniel's True Desire by Grace Burrowes

3
This book started out slow and it took about 220 pages before I could really get into the story. The character was too weak and never stood up for himself. Daniel Banks has arrived in Haddondale to replace the aging vicar. He is attracted to a lady of the manor although he is still married to Olivia. He and his wife have lived apart for several years, and when Daniel receives word that his wife has died, he and Lady Kirsten plan to marry. But Daniel feels that something is wrong and he never trusted Olivia. Is his wife really dead?

Linda
The Rumor by Elin Hilderbrand

3
The book is about two couples whose lives were affected by unfounded rumors spread by vicious gossips. Not caring if the gossip they spread was true or not, these people thrived on others' misfortunes.

Linda
The Art of Taming a Rake by Nicole Jordan

5
After the scandal she caused by turning away her drunk fiance at the church, Venetia Stratham is determined this will not happen to her sister. She comes to a gaming room looking for the Earl of Traherne who has been courting her sister and is a close friend of her ex-fiance. Quinn Wilde, the Earl, sees her first and escorts her to a private room for their discussion. Neither figured on the hot kisses exchanged or what their mutual attraction would lead to.

Linda
All of Us and Everything by Bridget Asher

2
I stuck with this book until the end thinking (and hoping!) it would get better, but it did not. An eccentric woman raises her three daughters in a rambling old house and tells her girls that their father is a spy. They think she is making this up but it is the truth. The parents corresponded by letter drop and even though he did not meet his daughters, he was closely aware of them and attended many of their events. The day finally came when he met them face to face. Neither knew what to expect.

Linda
The Lady's Command by Stephanie Laurens

3
A ship’s captain marries a duke’s daughter and thinks he will still have his life at sea as well as a pleasant life in town when his ship is docked. But his new wife has no plans to meekly sit at home awaiting her husband back from his travels. She intends to go too. She hides in a trunk and is taken aboard the ship to be discovered by her husband when it is too late to turn back. A cute love story of a headstrong woman and her equally headstrong husband.

Linda
Mastered by Maya Banks

5
This was an excellent book deserving of more than 5 stars. Evangeline Hawthorn is a naive young woman living with her girlfriends and trying to make a living as a waitress. She is talked into going to a club one night and is seen by Drake Donovan, the owner. As soon as he sees her, he knows he has to have her and has his men bring her to his office. That starts the steamy relationship between the two. As Ms. Banks states at the end of the book, she hated to cut short the story of Evangeline and Drake and the conclusion will come out in DOMINATED.

Stone Barrington heads to Rome to start construction on the newest Arrington hotel when he butts heads with Mafia kingpin, Leonardo Casselli. Casselli had Stone’s latest girlfriend kidnapped and held for ransom but Stone wouldn’t play. He intends to storm the fortress and free the girl. I used to enjoy the Stone Barrington novels but the latest ones just don't have a good story. All Stone seems to do is to have sex and drink scotch.

Dianne
Natchez Burning by Greg Iles

3
Great story in serious need of some editing. Way too long and includes everything but the kitchen sink. That said, the story was excellent and I cannot wait to start THE BURNING TREE.

Dorothy Flood
Undercover by Danielle Steel

3
Marshall Everett, an undercover DEA agent, became the trusted man of a drug lord. Back in the U.S. on assignment to the Secret Service an accident changes his life. Adrianna Gregory goes with her father as U.S. Ambassador to Argentina and is kidnapped. Read how these two lives become entwined. Not the usual Steel novel except that money is no problem.

Sandy
The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty

5
One of the best books I have read recently. Didn't get a lot of housework done these past couple of days. Imagine your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret - something with the potential to destroy not only the life you have built together, but the lives of others as well. And then imagine that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive.

Far From True by Linwood Barclay

4
Gripping page-turner. A don't-want-to-put-down-till-the-end read. Don't miss this series. Can't wait to return to Promise Falls in the final book of the trilogy, THE TWENTY-THREE.

Trezeline
Forty Acres by Dwayne Alexander Smith

3
Thought-provoking, at points ridiculous and unbelievable. Interesting read. Not a good influence in today's political and racial climate.

KC
The Girl in the Ice by Robert Bryndza

5
WOW. This book was awesome! A straight-forward, solve the crime, and how to deal with a copper with a ton of baggage story. I can't wait get back to the library and let others have a crack at it! Thank you, NetGalley, for the advanced digital copy.

Melanie S.
Platinum Doll by Anne Girard

4
4.5 stars. I am not a fan of old movies nor do I know much about movie stars of the 30s, but I absolutely loved this book! It is a "fictional" account of the life of Jean Harlow, who arrived in Hollywood as a seventeen-year-old married teenager, not wanting to be a star. But her looks got her noticed and fate stepped in. The term "platinum blonde" originated when describing the unusual color of her blonde hair! She was a woman of substance and extremely likable. The author also gives the reader an interesting look at those around Jean Harlow - her fame-obsessed mother, her husband, her stepfather, and movie stars of the time such as Oliver Hardy and Clark Gable. This was a fun read with no slow spots. Well done!

Cheryll Powning
House of Thieves by Charles Belfoure

5
Really enjoyed reading about New York City in the late 1800s. Murder, thievery, gambling, drugs all mixed among high society and the homeless. I'd like to see this book made into a movie.

Diane Giella
All the Stars in the Heavens by Adriana Trigiani

4
The book is a novel, but the plot is about the love affair between Clark Gable and Loretta Young which resulted in her pregnancy. The first half is about their making a movie ad the second half is about the consequences of the pregnancy. It was an interesting read but a little melodramatic with the prose and the same sentence was described numerous ways.

Beatrice
The Ice Cream Blonde by Michelle Morgan

5
Interesting book about Thelma Todd's life. She worked so hard for her career and was such a kind person. Her death was heartbreaking.

Janet
Far From True by Linwood Barclay

5
Second book in the Promise Falls series. Very suspenseful book with surprising twists. When reading the series of Promise Falls I feel like I know the place. Barclay makes the reader feel like this could be their town or neighbors. Can't wait for the third book in the series.

Brenda
Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork

4
A coworker suggested that I read this book. I am very glad I took the time to read it. The story was well plotted out and the characters were true-to-life. The cover of the book did not reflect the true story. If this author decided to continue this story, I would read it. For most areas of this story, I did not find my morals tested or the characters reacted the way I would have. I did not like the character, Wendell. He was rotten. I know Wendell played a big part in this story, I just wished he had not been so mean.

Jan
Snow White Must Die by Nele Neuhaus

5
WOW! This is the first book of this German author that has been translated into English and there will be more coming. It is a terrific mystery, complex with many characters, constant twists and turns, elusive clues, etc. Two young girls disappeared on the same night; a young man in the community was convicted of their deaths on circumstantial evidence and went to prison for 10 years. After his prison sentence, he went back home to a broken family and to weird actions by neighbors. It is obvious that people in the community know something. Then his mother is pushed off a bridge - seriously injured but still alive. Then another young woman disappears. People in the village are uncooperative with police. A great read.

Once Bitten, Twice Die by Antony J. Stanton

5
Great vampire action novel.

Hedwig
Anna and the Swallow Man by Gavriel Savit

5
This is listed as YA but it is great for all ages. It keeps you guessing as to the real identify of the swallow man and his reason for hiding. Anna is also a great character and we watch her grow during her years of hiding. It is a sad story. Very well written. It also has a history lesson, although somewhat abbreviate for the years involved.

Rolsemary
The Gratitude Diaries by Janice Kaplan

4
Thought-provoking.

Marilyn
Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter by Kate Clifford Larson

5
I have always been fascinated by the Kennedy family. Since I live near St. Coletta's, the Catholic institution where Rosemary spent many years of her life until her death in 2005, this biography was especially compelling. The author did extensive research at the Kennedy Library and created a portrait of how mental disablement was caused by a lobotomy when Rosemary's behavior became problematic to her prominent and wealthy family. This account gave a much different slant than Rose Kennedy's autobiography written in 1974.

Barbara
The Forgotten Room by Karen White, Beatriz Williams, and Lauren Willig

5
I really enjoyed this story told from three narrators from three different time periods. The authors wove the story so well I could not tell who wrote which character. I loved the way the three stories were connected through love and the forgotten room.

Gail
Before the Fall by Noah Hawley

4
This book will not be published until May 2016, but I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from Hachette. It is the story of eleven people who leave Martha's Vineyard on a private jet for New York City. Sixteen minutes into the flight the plane crashes and the only survivors are a four-year-old boy and the painter who saves him. The story is told by interweaving chapters of the aftermath of the crash and of the lives of the passengers leading up to the crash. Was the crash caused by someone trying to get rid of one of the passengers or was it pilot error? How the painter saved the boy and was able to swim to safety was amazing. I was also touched by the bond that formed between the survivors. I think this will be a very popular read.

LINDA
Black Magic: BWWM Billionaire Romance by Aaliyah Jackson

5
I was given this ARC in exchange for a review, and although the author is unknown to me, I am glad I have a copy. Alan and Rosalie's story about prejudice and greed in their families made Rosalie's Voo Doo faith a sticky point with Alan's sister when Carolyn's matchmaking plans fell through. Then Rosalie's sister had plans of her own.

Missing Pieces by Heather Gudenkauf

4
This is a murder mystery set in the town of Penny Gate, Iowa. Jack and Sarah Quinlan were called there from Montana because his aunt was near death from a fall. When his aunt dies, the whole family is under suspicion. Sarah starts doing some sleuthing to see what she can discover about two other unexplained deaths in the family. This was a good story from an author I've read before.

Phyllis
The Gratitude Diaries by Janice Kaplan

5
Changing your attitude can change your life. Janice Kaplan relates her personal journey through a year of keeping a gratitude journal and of the changes it made in her life and those around her. She interweaves her experiences with results of various studies. THE GRATITUDE DIARIES is a humorous, insightful reminder of how we can make small changes to create a better life.

A Disguise To Die For by Dianne Vallere

This is the first book in a new series by this author. A costume shop is the setting for this intriguing mystery. Great characters and a very fun story. I enjoyed this book very much and am eager to read the next installment in this series.

Hide by Matthew Griffin

5
A love story like none I've read before. Tender. Two young men meeting at the end of WWII and making a life for themselves 60 years on the outskirts of town. Never grocery shopping or attending functions together so as not to draw attention, aware that their love can hold real danger.

An Invisible Client by Victor Methos

5
Mr. Methos has written a remarkable book. It reminds me of the RAINMAKER by John Grisham. This is the first book of his I read but will not be the last. Noah Byron is a high-powered, personal injury lawyer who is a partner in a very successful firm. He and his partners have made lots of money and usually always win for their clients. When he gets a call from his ex-wife asking him to do her a favor and meet Rebecca Whiting, a cousin of hers, regarding a case where her twelve-year-old son Joel has been poisoned by a tainted children’s cough medicine, he is stunned. Tia, his ex, knows these are not the kind of cases he gets involved in and Noah agrees as a favor to just meet with Rebecca Whiting but makes no promises.

THE READERS OF BROKEN WHEEL RECOMMEND was a wonderful surprise! I had not expected to enjoy this book as much as I did. What a wonderful setting, and the characters were so interesting; made me want to discover more about this interesting town and its residents. I really thought the story was different and I found that I didn't want to put this book down. Highly recommend!

Heartbreaking perspectives from a day in the WTO riots in Seattle in 1990 are recounted. The takeaway is that everyone has a story - the cops, the rioters, the WTO delegates.

Brady
Paw Prints in Oman by Charlotte Smith

4
This nonfiction story is about a family living in Great Britain moving to Oman due to the husband getting a job there as a CEO. You learn the difference between expats and the local residents as well as how one meets the intolerable weather in the summertime and the hellish storms in season. The author gets a job at a local veterinary clinic, and much of the book is about the animals and the owners' love for kittens/cats. All manner of animals are taken care of and the "homeless" ones are housed. An interesting story that is fun to read.

Linda
Red Ruby Heart in a Cold Blue Sea by Morgan Callan Rogers

3
Read this in two sittings. A coming-of-age story, I figured out all by myself! A light read about teenaged Florine whose mother goes on a trip and never returns. Her father and she are soon at odds, so she moves in with her grandmother. Probably not a book I would have chosen for myself, but it kept me entertained. The first of a series.

Shelley Thompson
A Murder of Crows and Other Woes by Shoshanah Lee Marohn

5
Clever rhyming picture book that hooked my 7-year-old son. The story describes the groups of animals (murder of crows, smack of jellyfish, clutter of spiders, tribe of goats) that cause a little girl to miss two weeks of school. Unique, educational, and fun way to learn about animal names. Would be fun to read-aloud to a group of kids.

Anna and the Swallow Man by Gavriel Savit

4
This story is much like other stories that tell of the horror people suffered in World War II. This story is about a young girl who loses her father and the person who was to take care of her when her father was sent to a concentration camp. She meets up with the swallow man and tags along with him until they meet up with another man on their travels. It tells of the ways they had to survive under unbearable circumstances.

The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick

5
I very much enjoyed THE CURIOUS CHARMS OF ARTHUR PEPPER. It was both an easy, happy read and a page-turner. I didn’t want to put it down so it was read in three sittings. I am looking forward to reading more from Phaedra Patrick. I have told several people what a good book this is. Even my dental hygienist. Lovely story of a widower finding his feet again through his late wife's early adventures. A story of love and acceptance and adventure and forgiveness, and most of all personal growth.

Building Good Teammates: The Story of My Mount Rushmore, a Coaching Epiphany, and That Nun by Lance Loya

5
The author's personal journey to reach his epiphany is fascinating. While this book will be valuable to coaches and anyone who is working with kids, it is a great story and I highly recommend it to all readers.

Marie Ledin
Wired In (Paradise Crime Book 1) by Toby Neal

5
Toby Neal never disappoints. Captures your attention with the very first sentence and never stops. Special Agent Sophie Ang, one of Lei Texeira's friends from the Lei Crime Series, has her own story to tell. Captivating, never slows, and another "can't put the book down" story. Wish the second book was already done.

Cindy
A Drop in the Ocean by Jenni Ogden

5
I found myself loving this novel. The characters really come to life and deal with many real life situations. The location and description of the scenery puts you there in the story. Anna Fergusson, at 49, finds herself at a major crossroads in her life where she needs to make changes in life with no idea of what she should do. She has been an introvert all of her life, hates social functions, never married, and has only one friend. She decides on a whim to take a short term post on an island of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. There she finds, in the eclectic group of islanders, real friendship - friends that can count as family. The journey she takes with her new friends makes a wonderful yet poignant story.

Brady
That Bear Ate My Pants! by Tony James Slater

4
This non-fiction story is of a Britisher going to Ecuador on a fling as a young man in his 20s working near Quito as a volunteer in an animal enclosure for distressed residents. He did not speak a word of Spanish when arriving and was learning how to do most everything on this "ranch" in his trial of life. He became most adept as well as learning the ways of the populace. An easy read of interest for sure.

Steven
After the Crash by Michel Bussi

4
Excellent story featuring twists and turns as the reader tries to stay one step ahead! A page-turner of major proportions.

Becky
Sister of Mine by Sabra Waldfogel

4
Although this novel takes place during the years of the Civil War, it is more a novel of two sisters – one white, one black -- and how they learn to not just tolerate, but love each other. Adelaide is the white daughter of the largest plantation owner in their small town. Rachel is her half-sister, born of her father’s liaison with one of his slaves. Rachel serves as her sister’s maid. The novel backtracks to cover the earlier life of the family. In flashbacks, the family dynamics, Adelaide’s family’s Jewishness, Adelaide’s social punishment for a broken engagement, her later marriage and the repercussions of failing to love her husband are explored.

Ringmaster (The Magic Carnival Book 1) by Trudi Jaye

5
I was given this ARC in return for an honest review, and as I have never read this author before I just have to say WOW! Rilla Jolly was still grieving for her dad as they held his wake under the carnival tent. She had grown up in the carnival and the members were all she had left of her "family", but she had some mighty big boots to filled stepping in as the ringmaster. For over two years the carnival had been plagued with one accident after another, and the bank was demanding payment in a not gentle way. Now to top it off an old rival was staking his right to be the next ringmaster after an absence of over thirty years when her dad kicked him out!

My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout

4
Another very good book by Elizabeth Strout on mothers and daughters. A woman is in the hospital following surgery for nine weeks and wakes up one morning to find her mother sitting by her bed. She left home to attend college and never returned and has not seen her mother in years. For five days her mother stays and they talk about the past, both good and bad.

Helen
The Widow by Fiona Barton

5
When I first started reading the book, I didn't think that I liked the format as each chapter is dated and titled with the the character in the book who is telling that part of the story. I soon got over that and couldn't wait to read more as the characters became real as the mystery was explained over time. It was all I could do not to skip to the end to see how the story ended. The book is one you won't want to put down and it could be read in a short time.

Edee
Brighton Belle by Sara Sheridan

4
BRIGHTON BELLE was a breath of fresh air. Set in England just after the end of World War II, Mirabelle Bevan misses her Secret Service past as well as a lost love. Her sleuthing skills are awakened when a mysterious case comes into the debt collection office where she works. Mirabelle can't help but get caught up in solving the mystery and following the web of lies to their conclusion. I really enjoyed BRIGHTON BELLE. It brought me back to my days of reading Nancy Drew and I loved the 1950s time setting. Mirabelle is a character you can really cheer for and Vesta Churchill is a great addition to the story. I definitely looking forward to reading more in this series.

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

5
What a loss. I finished this book one year and one day after the author died. I feel that "we" have lost a man who would have been a marvelous doctor, husband, father, and friend. He writes so well and seemed to have a miraculous intuition about his role in life and his dying. I know I will read this book over again and again. Strongly recommend.

Marsha
Queen of the Night by Alexander Chee

3
This saga outlines the life of a soprano who started out a destitute young orphan but found her way by hook or crook to Europe from her home in Minnesota. From her circus days, her bawdy house days to spying in France, through the occupation of Germany in Paris, through her love affairs, the book continues for over 500 pages. It could use a good edit but still you will learn much about opera and Parisian life in the 1800s.

The Secret to Hummingbird Cake by Celeste Fletcher McHale

4
A deep and loving friendship between three women from the age of 5 into adulthood. This story encourages you to appreciate the moment. I laughed and I shed many tears when reading this touching story. This book leaves you with an appreciation of life and those around you.

I received this ARC in return for an honest review and I loved it! Take an ex-CIA-agent-turned-teacher, twelve Girl Scouts on a tour of D.C. for selling the most cookies, and a kidnapped missing former handler from Merry Wrath's days in the CIA, stir in a crazy King vulture the girls named Mr. Fancy Pants who's addicted to cookies, simmer with the Yakuza, a Japanese Syndicate leader who's loony and you have a heck of a story! All Merry wanted to do was take her troop and show them the Capital, but her best friend that was to help would go into labor any day and Merry had to get a parent to help help her as she never had kids and would rather fight a terrorist than twelve screaming little girls!

LINDA
Dolor and Shadow by Angela B. Chrysler

4
I won this book and agreed to give it an honest review. Although the book is quite long, the story never drew me into it as I first expected it to do from the excerpt. This was an interesting story about an Elven witch little girl who inherited her father's war when she failed to save him from death. She vows revenge on the one man she thought was responsible and swears to kill him, but she's just a child and how could she kill a grown man and the king of Gunir named Rune. But nothing is as it seems and the fates and gods are relentless.

Christine
Pacific Burn by Barry Lancet

5
Another amazing thriller by this author. His main character, Jim Brodie, is at it again. The murder starts in Napa Valley at an art gallery. He receives help from a forensic artist in Suisun City and is able to catch the killer. Both JAPANTOWN and TOKYO KILL were great, but I completely enjoyed this newest book in this series.

What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan

4
Rachel never imagines that her 8-year-old son would disappear when she gave him permission to run ahead at the local park. Finding only his pile of clothes, the entire town sets out to find out what happened to little Benedict Finch. An interesting portrayal on the effect of social media as accusations and unfounded claims start flying around town. A good portrayal of how we sometimes villainize moms for being less than perfect. Well written and a gripping mystery.

In the Company of Others by Jan Karon

3
I was intrigued when I read this novel about Father Tim which took place in Ireland and was about a trip to an Irish B&B with his wife to visit the places of his ancestry. But, there were so many characters to keep straight and an old journal Tim and his wife Cynthia start to read throughout their stay just seems to drag down the story. Not my favorite Father Tim novel, but still enjoy his character and stories.

Nancy
Dead Wake by Erik Larson

5
Larson was the keynote speaker for the Savannah Book Festival, which my book club attended. We always pick at least one book from the festival to review so that we can add the author's input to our discussion. We all agreed that DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY is still our favorite Larson book, but DEAD WAKE was incredibly researched, kept our attention, and taught us the details of how fast the Lusitania sank, and also, sadly, that our beloved Sound of Music hero, Captain von Trapp, had sunk a number of Allied vessels.

James
The Winner by David Baldacci

5
One of his earlier books and totally a page-turner. A young woman living in a trailer park with a young child and an abusive husband is given a guaranteed winning lottery ticket. She only has to leave the country and live abroad. What could go wrong? Lots. A mad man, a confidant and a woman who grows in wisdom and strength combine to make a spellbinding thriller.

Most Wanted by Lisa Scottoline

3
First half of the novel I loved, couldn't put it down. Then it got bogged down with all the twists and turns, some not making sense. Better resolution to the story than I anticipated near the end. Chase scene rather drawn out. I still like her storytelling. This was an advance reader copy. Not out to public until April.

Marcia
Killing Reagan by Bill O'Reilly

5
Story of President Reagan's presidency, especially in regard to the assassination attempt soon into his presidency. A good overview of the events. It was also good timing to be reading this at the time of Nancy Reagan's death. She's also a big part of O'Reilly's book, as she was such a driving force behind the President's success. This was a good read.

Melanie S.
Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver

5
Wow. I don't know how I missed this book when it came out in 2012. This was novel was close to perfection. The writing was incredible with beautiful imagery. Set in a rural Appalachian town, the characters were interesting and the plot engaging. Global warming and climate change and its impact on the different socioeconomic classes was the backdrop for a great story with wonderful character development. A flock of monarch butterflies descends on a mountaintop in a desolate, rural area, something that has never happened before, and the lives of those living in the area are forever changed. The story held me rapt from beginning to end. Highly recommended! I also listened to the audiobook, well read by the author herself.

Bonnie
The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner

4
I read this in two days, it's so compelling. Wariner's memoir of growing up as a child in a polygamous family will leave you thinking long after you've finished reading. Her fortitude and resilience are amazing. For those complaining about how tough their life is, read this and quit your bellyaching.

The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan

4
I read this after reading Egan's BREAKING BLUE that I learned about from Bookreporter.com. As a North Dakota native, I'd heard about the Dust Bowl of the 1930s; however, I truly didn't grasp the severity and horror of it. He weaves the facts of the entire disaster, including the government's role in causing and trying to resolve the problem. The book includes the personal experiences of several ordinary people who lived in the Dust Bowl. I'd never heard of dust pneumonia that killed people and animals. People had no food, and the severe drought meant no crops so no means of a living and no control over the dust tornados and blizzards. In our 21st century American life, it sounds more like Hollywood big screen fiction than reality.

Interesting subject matter but the author leaves various storylines hanging. This is the 18th Bones book featuring Tempe Brennan.

Gail
Coal River by Ellen Marie Wiseman

5
A very descriptive look at a mining town in Pennsylvania and how difficult it was for the miners to earn enough money to pay for the necessities of life while the bosses were living a life of ease. The story also goes into union organizing to improve the miner's working conditions. All of this wrapped up into an interesting plot line.

The Ultimatum by Dick Wolf

4
THE ULTIMATUM by Dick Wolf is the third entry in the new series by the well-known creator of Law and Order. At the center of the series is veteran NYPD Intelligence detective Jeremy Fisk. Just like his notable TV series, THE ULTIMATUM draws its inspiration from real-life events and the result is a captivating novel that seems all too possible. The depth of the characters and pace of the story demonstrate Wolf’s skill as a writer. The plot does not get bogged down in technical details but has enough to keep the reader motivated to read further. I look forward to the continuation of this series.

Nadine
The Revenant by Michael Punke

5
I like to read a book before the movie comes out. In this case I've seen the promo clips before reading and I'm glad as I had a more vivid mental image when I could place the clips to the scene in the book. I devoured the book in one day and look forward to the movie, wondering how the multiple character plot lines will be dealt with.

The Readers Of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald

5
The second best book of this century (after A MAN CALLED OVE)! Very similar as far as books that can make you smile and cry at the same time. If you love books, characters you feel like you already know, and a town you would love to "sit a spell" in, this is a must-read.

A heartwarming story of a magical B&B and the people who stayed there over Christmas. There are a lot of funny episodes involving an adopted dog that had not received any obedience training and was determined to get the cat that was at home in the B&B. The Cavendon Women by Barbara Taylor Bradford

5
The Ingham and Swann families swore allegiance to each other ever since the first Swann served as liege to Humphrey Ingham, the first Earl of Mowbray. This book is about these two families and their relationships from 1926 to 1929. Miles Ingham, the current heir, has loved Cecily Swann since childhood, but Miles’ father insisted he marry an aristocrat. Miles married Clarissa Meldrew who proved to be barren and Miles is miserable. He wants a divorce to marry Cecily but Clarissa won’t give an inch.

Linda
Cavendon Hall by Barbara Taylor Bradford

5
The story of the Ingham and Swann families and their loyalty and connection to each other through the years is continued in this book (the second of the series). The Inghams are aristocrats while the Swanns are the faithful servants. Although there are many characters, two of the main ones in this book are Daphne Ingham and Hugo Stanton. Hugo is her father’s cousin and comes to Daphne’s aid when she sorely needs it. Theirs is a true love story. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

All Night With a Rogue by Alexandra Hawkins

5
A spicy novel involving one of the notorious Lords of Vice and an innocent young woman he has targeted. He never had feelings for any of his women before but there was something about this woman. Surely he was not falling in love! A young man dallying with a woman beneath a tree looks up into the tree and into the eyes of a beautiful woman. Intrigued by her beauty, he is determined to find her. When he does, she is the woman his sister wants destroyed. This is the first book in the Lords of Vice series. Love this series and these rogues!

The Relic Master by Christopher Buckley

5
Rarely do you find historical fiction that makes you laugh out loud, but this book did. From the opening description of the relics market to the very last page, this book had my interest and there were many places where I found myself chuckling. Despite the fact that what Dismas and his companions were doing was wrong, I cheered for them until the very end. It was a madcap adventure and a great read to the very end.

I picked up this book because the author is the guest speaker at the annual Literacy Luncheon here in Oak Ridge, TN. It is a fascinating story that was hard to put down. Suspect by Robert Crais

4
A book for dog lovers. Maggie, a dog trained to locate bombs, has just returned from Afghanistan after she was shot and her handler was killed in an ambush. She is psychologically lost, suffering from PTSD (yes, dogs suffer from that, too), and unable to place. Scott is a police officer who saw his friend/partner killed in a robbery gone bad, and is on "desk duty". People tell him to take early retirement, but he joins the canine unit and chooses Maggie over another dog that was originally paired with him. What transpires is the relationship between man and dog as they attempt to solve the crime that resulted in the death of his partner. Crais does a good job of getting into the mind of Maggie, and you will fall in love with her.

Elizabeth
The Girls from See Saw Lane by Sandy Taylor

4
I would rate this 4.5 stars. This book is about two best friends Dottie and Mary. Mary is in love with Elton, and Dottie loves Ralph. Sounds like a typical chick lit book, but there is so much more. It is a story about friendship and two girls who have to decide if theirs is worth saving. It takes place in Brighton England in the 60s and you will love going back in time with the girls. The only reason it is not five stars for me is that it left me wanting more and now I have to wait for the sequel. No real swearing or sex, just a really nice story.

Murder on the Rocks by Allyson K. Abbott

4
I enjoyed this book. It's about a woman whose father was murdered and left in their parking lot. She is trying to run the bar he owned and get past the loss of her father. Then, another body is found in the parking lot and suspicion has fallen on her...for both murders. The detective on the case wants to work in the bar and try to pick up information from the patrons. Predictable plot, but I found it good reading to find out who was guilty.

Gail
The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel

3
This is not an easy book to read. It feels as if it is set in a world of make-believe that completely lacks credulity. In all three parts the central character is mourning the loss of a wife, parent, and/or child and the way they deal with their grief is examined. Using the search for an ancient artifact, most likely a crucifix, the tale questions the very essence of life and religion. It is very creative and the prose creates pictures in your mind, but it will also tax your brain. Fans of LIFE OF PI may love it or leave it disappointed. It is a toss-up. I appreciated it for the amazing way the author used language to take the reader into his world.

The Precipice by Paul Doiron

4
I have a friend who has hiked part of the Appalachian Trail and is prepping to continue with his son this summer. Against Odds by Dick Francis

3
I have not read a Dick Francis book in over 40 years, and I thoroughly enjoyed AGAINST ODDS, the story of Sid Halley, a retired steeplechase jockey. Like many detectives, Sid Halley, encounters death many times during the story; an excited thug shoots Sid in error and a group of thugs attempts to torture Sid into revealing the whereabouts of film negatives. England and steeplechase courses provide a compelling setting as Sid battles to save the demise of racing course slated for a capitalistic venture into housing units. The story delves into the beautiful versus the ugly, and which is truly good, which reminds me of the two women in High Noon---the black lady and the white lady in her wedding attire. Why so much emphasis on appearance?

Debbie
Midnight Sun by Jo Nesbo

3
MIDNIGHT SUN opens on bleakness, and the mood does not change too drastically from the opening page. Jon Hansen has left Oslo and arrived in the Arctic Circle in an attempt to hide from the Fisherman. Jon, now calling himself Ulf, meets several people in his quest to hide Lea and her son, Knut, and Mattis. These three people help Ulf in his quest to find peace and happiness. The story unfolds slowly about Ulf's life and his errors, but we also meet Lea, a woman who accepts the decision of her father even though she aches for a better life. I can see this book as a movie done in black and white, but an ending in color.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review and fell in love with Princess Mia and Dami's story! Mia and Dami had played as kids and talked over just about everything where they met in the forest. They knew they were mates even though there was no happily ever afters as she was royal and he was just a commoner. When her older brother fled their country with his mate and their unborn child she had the task to get them back where he could do his duty as she didn't want to be queen. Dami is hiding a secret and is waiting for the right time to claim Mia for his own. The gods know he had to force himself to be satisfied with steamy kisses, but Queen Isobell threw a curve ball and the Assembly gave Mia 60 days to choose.

Anil has left his home country of India to go to Dallas, Texas, to be an intern and then a resident at the prestigious Parkview Hospital there. Back home in India, his closest friend, Leena, is married off to a man who turns out to be a brutal husband. The author also wrote THE SECRET DAUGHTER -- another fascinating read.

Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith

5
Another winner! This is the third Cormoran Strike mystery and it is as good as the first two. His assistant/secretary/temp/partner is finally getting married and receives a box at the office that she thinks contains wedding favors. Instead it contains a human leg and the race is on. As usual, Strike does not get on with the local police and knows that the leg is meant to bring him trouble with the locals. Strike and Robin search for the murderer while Robin breaks off her engagement and then gets fired by Strike. It is all a muddle but we get the overarching point that people, especially children, should not be sexually molested. This is a great read and gives us more detail on Strike and an old childhood friend who comes to his aid.

What a charming book about small town life and how a community interacts, supports each other, and truly becomes family. Written from the perspective of a visitor to a very small Midwestern town, the premise is simple yet becomes more complex as more people are introduced and the town's history, character's past and present needs, and the true love of books come forward. A must-read for book lovers everywhere.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

4
THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN is about Rachel, a depressed alcoholic who is sure she has witnessed important information concerning a missing woman. Or was that accurate? This is a gripping, fascinating psychological thriller. I was hooked from the beginning and didn’t guess the culprit until the reveal. The ending is nothing short of chilling.

Darlene
Promises in Death by J. D. Robb

5
This is one of my favorite series. I love the romance between Roarke and Eve and her awesomeness as a detective.

Kathy
Killer Crab Cakes by Livia J. Washburn

5
Book 4 is a fresh-baked mystery. I love this series. Phyllis gets into the most unusual spots in this book. She leaves her Oak Knoll Bed & Breakfast for a few weeks to help her cousin with her bed & breakfast while she goes to help her daughter when she has a baby who needs a heart surgery the day after she was born. And of course with Phyllis's luck she runs into her first dead body the day after she takes over.

Kelli
The Girl in the Red Coat by Kate Hamer

4
This story of an abducted child is gripping and harrowing. The tale is told from the alternating perspectives of both the distraught mother and her missing daughter. Definitely one to put on your must-read list!

Sue
White Collar Girl by Renee Rosen

5
Wonderful, easy read about a woman newspaper reporter during the 1950s when women didn't dare venture into a man's profession. Vivid stories of Chicago and prominent figures of the time brought back fond memories of the City. Part mystery, part romance and a joy to read.

Mary
The Fireman by Joe Hill

4
THE FIREMAN is a quick, unputdownable 700 + page novel that will keep you up reading all night and make you want to call in unable to work. No one really knows where the Dragonscale spore originated. Many and various theories abound, the most likely is, that as the ice caps melt and the planet heats up, the spore is released into the atmosphere. Natures own safety valve to save earth from humankind's destructive tendencies. This is one of the most creative takes on apocalyptic literature that I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The protagonist, Harper Willowes, is a young, pregnant nurse who risks her own health to tend others. This is her story and I loved it! Highly recommended for all Hill and King fans.

Deborah
Battle Cry of Freedom by James McPherson

5
Great historical narrative that dealt with political, social, and military events beginning with the war to annex Mexico and ending with the surrender of Lee to Grant. Despite the in-depth research, I found this book easy to read. By end of book, I gained a better appreciation of why the south fought so long and hard against unbeatable odds to preserve their "way of life" as well as the wisdom shown by Lincoln to reunite his country.

Barbara
Brighton Belle by Sara Sheridan

5
I really enjoyed this fast read featuring strong female characters. Mirabelle Bevan works as the secretary for a debt collection agency. It's a pretty ho-hum job after working behind the scenes at Whitehall (British spy headquarters) during WWII, but she put all that behind her after the sudden death of her lover, Jack. When her boss Bob turns up dead, Mirabelle finds herself caught up in a murder mystery and there's plenty more bodies besides Bob's. Along the way she enlists the help of Vesta, the secretary from the insurance office down the hall. Vesta is quite a funny girl, but just right to play off Mirabelle's seriousness. They get themselves into all sorts of jams trying to figure out who done it.

Maureen
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

5
Awesome tale of WW II from the French citizens point-of-view during their German occupation. Could not put it down. Has become a top three favorite of mine.

LINDA
Kill Zone Book 1 by Zeke Mitchell

5
I was given this ARC in return for an honest review and was swept into the story from page one! Non-stop action and a vengeful killing machine named Matt Thorn who swore to take Vince Flaco, a Mafia drug lord that had the Mexican cartel as well as Russia in the palm of his hand. He desired to make the entire world hooked on a drug called Monster Rush. With only himself to count on, Matt knows that anyone could be turned if the money was right! Book One ends in a fiery crash with Matt looking at the sky, and I can't wait to read Book Two!

Becky
The Forgotten Room by Lincoln Child

5
Here you have it – an exciting thriller with no profanity, no hot and heavy sex and little violence. Well, there is some violence – several murders, a grisly suicide (or maybe not a suicide), a crazy person or two, a secret room with diabolical machines and, of course, the hapless scholar cum detective. The characters are decently drawn, the plot is clear, the tension is heart-stopping. It is easy to see why Child is a bestselling author. If you like mysteries that slowly draw you in and then amp up the tension, this is the book for you. One of the best of the genre.

Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff

3
The second half made the first half worthwhile.

Aimee Hegedus
The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure

4
The stories of the families in this book will stay with me for a while. While a work of fiction, I know the atrocities told were very real. I was so caught up in the story, and fearful for the characters, I kept praying for the liberation of Paris. You are emotionally tied to the characters and want no additional losses of life and keep on believing there is still good, which hopefully will prevail in the end.

How About Never - Is Never Good for You? My Life in Cartoons by Bob Mankoff

5
Bob Mankoff has been the cartoon editor for The New Yorker for almost 20 years. This book is part memoir ("you can't have a memoir without "moi"), part history of cartooning and The New Yorker and completely hilarious. His humor pervades his text as well as his cartoons. He, however, is wrong about one thing. According to him, a three person panel decides which cartoons are selected each week for the magazine because people don't laugh out loud by themselves. I should have been afraid the people in my vicinity were calling for the men in white coats to take care of the guffawing lady in the corner. Instead, I just thoroughly enjoyed this witty edition.

Thomas
The Standup Guy by Stuart Woods

4
I enjoyed reading the book very much.

Thomas
Troublemaker by Leah Remini

4
It was a very good book. I enjoyed reading it.

Murder on the Edge by Bruce Beckham

4
I enjoyed this English novel. The book was very good.

Jane
When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

5
A poignant, beautifully written memoir of a neurosurgeon's battle with cancer in his last months of residency. This book not only made me examine my own life's direction but ponder the importance of where I am going now. Have I made an impact if tomorrow my whole world turned upside down? What is really important?

Thomas
Being James Dean by Paul Alaxander

3
It was a good book.

Pauline
Cold-Blooded by Lisa Regan

5
If I could I'd give COLD-BLOODED more than five stars. This thriller really grabbed and held my interest with her flawed real characters and great story development with its twists and turns till the end. I liked the way Regan uses short chapters with tease endings which draw you right into the next one. A case was not solved for fourteen years, but now a new PI unravels the mystery to find the cold-blooded psychopath killer.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

4
A blind French girl and a young German orphan find their lives intersect in the walled Brittany town of Saint-Malo in August 1944. Doerr gives us wonderful descriptions, letting the reader experience the world as Marie-Laure and Werner do. Doerr peoples the novel with a wide assortment of characters, but the two young people at its core will stay with me for a long time, as will the haunting strains of "Clair de Lune".

Trude
Strangers by Mary Anna Evans

4
This is the 6th book in the Faye Longchamp mystery series. Faye is an archeologist who always manages to find a mystery to solve. She has her PhD now, and she and Joe Wolf Mantooth are married. Plus she is 8 months pregnant, which causes some interesting problems. I really enjoy these books -- they are a perfect blend of history and archaeology with a murder thrown in. I love Joe and Faye. Ms. Evans has created strong, rich characters that I have really enjoyed getting to know.

Brady
Hero to Zero by Zach Fortier

4
The author is an ex-cop and has written about all the individual cops he has known during his tenure as a cop who started their careers like they were a model policeman and later did things that were really bad, ending their careers. There are many individuals noted which points out the fallibility of many people who give in to temptation. A most interesting book where the stories are short and very different from one another.

Judy
Killing Jesus by Bill O'Reilly

4
While staying close to the Biblical narrative of the death of Jesus, this book is filled with historical notes about life under the Romans in Israel. Fast and easy to read, and well worth the time!

A Brief History of Montmaray by Michelle Cooper

2
Sixteen-year-old Sophie FitzOsborne writes of her life in the crumbling castle on the small island of Montmaray. It is 1936 and their isolation is about to end as news from the mainland lets them know the world is on the brink of war. Sounds exciting but overall I was bored. There are a few moments of decently written suspense, and I liked the strong female characters. But the cliffhanger ending seems manipulative, and I’m not sure I care enough about what happens next to read Book Two in the series. I see the appeal for the YA audience, but it’s not for me.

Rosemary
Brotherhood in Death by J. D. Robb

5
Great, as expected!

Joan
The Things We Keep by Sally Hepworth

5
Very good. This is about a young woman who develops dementia at an early age and her struggle as well as her family's to deal with the effects.

Marsha
Far From True by Linwood Barclay

3
Although the story was engaging about a town called Promise Falls, there were too many characters to follow. Each chapter bounced from person to person that lead to the confusion.

Thomas
Foreign Affairs by Stuart Woods

5
I enjoyed reading this book very much. I would recommend this book to anybody.

Linda
The Widow by Fiona Barton

4
A page-turner. Thought I had it figured out until I didn't! I went from feeling sorry for the characters to being disturbed be their behavior. Desperate measures.

LINDA
Surveillance by Reece Hirsch

5
I received this ARC in return for an honest review, and all I can say is I was blown away with the story that rings true that Big Brother is watching you! Chris Bruen, a former computer crimes prosecutor, decided to open his law practice. He had no clue how the first client would change his life for the worst! When Ian Ayres turned to be an ethical hacker, he had no idea that his legit hacking for one company that hired him to search for bugs would prove to be his downfall when he found data that wasn't supposed to be found. He searched for Chris to help him as people wanted him dead because he knew too much! Chris Bruen didn't want to believe Ian at first as his story sounded like a best seller thriller novel.

LINDA
Dark and Stormy by Traci Tyne Hilton

4
I was given this book as a part of a giveaway, and although I never agreed to a review, I chose to do one. Issac Daniel had been in trouble in Book One when one of his charges decided to leave the religious school, and her sister went to find her with Issac, running interference as the sister was much too young to be chasing after her older sister. Now, it's winter and the school is preparing for their Christmas smorgasbord and a prank of green Jello ruins the salmon, but that's not all! In order to make it up, his boss he has to find the murderer before Christmas, which is only two weeks away!

After the Crash by Michel Bussi

3
3.5 stars. This book got off to a slow, choppy start for me. The premise of the book was great, but I felt the story jumped around a bit too much and found it confusing. The last half of the book was much more engaging, and I quickly read to the end once I passed the halfway point. I don't think I've ever read a mystery with more twists and turns; there were almost too many and I found it annoying to be continually switching my train of thought every few pages. This would probably make a great movie.

Jan
Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz

5
This is my first book by Hurwitz and I loved it. Mystery, fast-paced, interesting characters, false turns and it felt as if justice had happened at the end. Orphan X was a true orphan and had been selected for a special secret government program. This was an off-the-books group of people with unlimited money trained to do what they were told to do. Orphan X learned all sorts of ways to disable the hoodlums. Except Orphan X decided to quit the program only to discover that there is no quitting. He knew too much. Now he hides out and does good for one person at a time. He rescues the innocent, kills the dirty cops, helps those who need help. It was a thriller - cannot-put-down book.

I'll See You in Paris by Michelle Gable

5
Michelle Gable’s I'LL SEE YOU IN PARIS winds together the lives of three women born generations apart, but who face similar struggles of love and heartbreak. The novel is told in two intertwining storylines, one set in modern day and one in the past. Gable propels the reader forward through the two plots by making you wonder how things are progressing in the other time frame. I was particularly engaged in the historic storyline about the Duchess of Marlborough. Michelle Gable’s thorough research brings history to life in this charming novel. If you loved reading the 2014 novel THE PARIS APARTMENT then you will love this book too. Highly Recommend for people who love historical fiction.

Patricia
The Widow by Fiona Barton

4
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the story being told through the different characters. I guess my only complaint would be that the ending kind of felt anticlimactic. After all this buildup through the book, I figured maybe there would be some sort of plot twist towards the end. But there wasn't really. It turned out it was really what everyone thought it would be. So I was left feeling a little deflated at the end.

The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion

3
Not quite as good as the THE ROSIE PROJECT by same author, but still enjoyable.

Liz
Whiskey and Charlie by Annabel Smith

5
Whiskey and Charlie are twin brothers with very different personalities. When Whiskey is badly injured in an accident, Charlie must come to terms with his relationship with not only his brother but the rest of the family as well. It is a wonderfully written story, well told and well thought out, about siblings and families. My book club read this and everyone agreed it was wonderful and can't wait to share it with their families.

Kelli
My Sunshine Away by M.O. Walsh

5
MY SUNSHINE AWAY is an excellent read! It deals with the aftermath of the rape of a 15-year-old girl, and is surprisingly told from the perspective of her young neighbor who has long harbored a teenage crush. This book portrays perfectly that violent acts impact not only their victim, but also those who love them.

Shelley
The Gratitude Diaries by Janice Kaplan

5
THE GRATITUDE DIARIES is an inspirational book about making a difference in relationships, work and health. Janice Kaplan has given us a memoir with valid research, humor and a touch of celebrity (Matt Damon, Daniel Craig, Clint Eastwood, etc.) to bring home the point that gratitude can change your outlook, your life and your world. I came away with some clear-cut ideas of how to incorporate gratitude into my life (letter of thanks, ethical will, thanking someone months later after the fact). A couple of takeaway mantras: Forget the bad stuff, I'm here now! Two arms, two legs, I'm breathing. I highly recommend this book. It's going to be my gift to others for all occasions this year!
