Lori Bednaz
Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult

5
Fantastic read. Parallel stories of character's time spent in wild with pack of wolves and real life family issues. Jodi Picoult did excellent research, so the information about wolf behavior is accurate!

Emily Comella
The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan

4
Charlotte Rogan's debut novel is a riveting read. In 1914, Grace Winter, after being married only a short time, finds herself in a sinking lifeboat with 38 other people. The survivors of a doomed luxury liner know they won't survive unless there are fewer people on the boat. Grace, whose wealthy husband secured a place for her on the lifeboat, narrates the the tale after the ill-fated end. Now the manipulative and shred Grace finds herself on trial for murder. The novel raises the question: what would any of us do or not do under the same circumstances? This is thought-provoking novel that book clubs will love,

Debra Le
Tumbleweeds by Leila Meacham

Loving this book. Friday night football, in the Texas Panhandle, three young friends, a baby, wonderful story and a beautiful cover on this book.

Deborah Davis
The Turtle Catcher by Nicole Helget

Great story about effects of WW1, Minnesota history and immigration, love story and mystery wrapped into one book

Diane Pollock
Railsea by China Melvielle

5
Unique and very engaging tale of a dystopian future.

Rosalie Sambuco
I've Got Your Number by Sophia Kinsella

5
Another winner! This is a charming, sweet story which reminds me of young people of today & their constant texting. I laughed aloud several times. I read this book in two days and I was sorry to have it end. This is a fantastic "tweenie" summer read.

Rhonda Lomazow
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty

5
Wonderful book

Fran O
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

5
The second book in the Hunger games series. Not quite as good as the first one but a good read nonetheless. Cannot wait to get the third book & see how this all wraps up!

Susan Curtis
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton

5
Absolutely love it. Good old fashioned story telling. Lots to discuss at a book club. We all loved and discussed many different things. But the main theme was identity. Do you tell your child the truth as a adult or when they can understand? Adoption issues were talked about. I highly recommend. I am shouting it from the roof tops. I hope to read her other ones soon.

Susan Atkins
Pepperoni Pizza Can Be Murder by Chris Cavender

5
This is a story of murder and mayhem in a small North Carolina town. It has two main characters of two sisters who run a pizza restaurant. It is fairly fast paced and keeps you interested. I recommend it to any mystery reader.

Susan Johnson
Gold by Chris Cleave

5
A magnificent story of two competitors and friends in their pursuit of a Gold medal in cycling in 3 different Olympics. They love the same man and Kate has a daughter with leukemia. How all these ties intertwine and pursuing their heart's desire makes this a book that you can not put down.

Debbie Smith
The Witness by Nora Roberts

4
This is a very fast paced thriller with the witness being a very young girl on the run from the Russian Mafia. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would.

Brenda Manning
The Beginner's Goodbye by Anne Tyler

3
A light read that revolves around the story of a man coping with the first year after the loss of his wife. While I was intrigued by the quirky characters, I found them to be largely unbelievable.

Heather
The Dud Avocado by Elaine Dundy

5
I found this title on a recommended summer reading list and was intrigued. (It was originally published in 1958.) This is a wonderfully entertaining story of a young American woman in Paris. I haven't finished it yet but love it!

Heather
Sacre Bleu by Christopher Moore

3
Unfortunately, what started out as a 5 star book fell to 3 stars. While I found the history of the Impressionists really interesting, "Bleu" started driving me nuts and I thought the story would never end.

Dian Boysen
One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf

5
What an incredible story! It kept me on the edge of my chair all the way through. I like how she devoted each chapter to a different character and how they saw what was enfolding in the story. I feel that this is her best of the three she has written.

Allison Gardner
The Scottish Prisoner by Diana Gabaldon

3
Great Story

Dian Boysen
One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf

5
This was very suspenseful. My interest was held throughout the book. I like how each chapter is a different character speaking. I feel this is her best of the three she has written.

Lonnie Friedman
The Moment: Wild, Poignant, Life-Changing Stories from 125 Writers and Artists Famous & Obscure by Edited by Larry Smith

5
This is a book of short, 2 to 4 page essays by writers, artists, and ordinary people who write about a moment in their lives that changed how they saw their lives. Sometimes the moment that changed their lives was obvious at the time it occurred; other times it was only in hindsight that the moment was life-changing. The essays are poignant, surprising, enlightening, sad, funny, honest and reflective. The best way to read this book is one essay at a time, with time to digest and reflect on the individual essay, so fight your inclination to read essay after essay in one sitting!

Sharon Elliott-Fox
Other Waters by Eleni Gage

4
Set in the U.S. and India, Maya tries to discover love --- and herself --- in this interesting novel of love, family, cultural differences and friendship. Maya's parents had an "arranged" marriage, and while they are not insisting on such for Maya, they do want her to marry within their religious belief system and cultural background. The book chronicles Maya's difficulty in treading the waters between her parents' desires and her own insecurities. I would have loved a glossary so that I might have better understood some of the non-English words used, although the context helped.

Sharon Elliott-Fox
As the Pig Turns by M. C. Beaton

3
As always, Agatha Raisin is chasing a murderer --- this one particularly gruesome as the victim has been not only murdered, but dismembered and a pig's head and feet substituted so that the victim was being roasted at the local Pig Roast and party. Offending many, loving several, sleuthing into forbidden places and generally annoying the local police, Agatha seeks justice --- and possibly a bit of revenge.

Mary Rodriguez
Copper Beach by Jayne Ann Krentz

5
A great contemporary romantic suspense

Jayme G
The Road Home by Rose Tremain

4
In The Road Home Tremain does a brilliant job describing the emotional roller coaster that it is being an immigrant in a new country. The trials that Lev endures while trying to save money to take care of his family are heart-wrenching. As you read the book you begin to question who is really the “ignorant” person --- the newly arrived immigrant or the people of the new country? This book is not to be missed.

Joanne Anderson
On The Island by Tracey Garvis Graves

5
This was a great summer read. Caught me in the first sentence! Great for the beach or sitting by the pool, this book flowed nicely and was hard to put down.

Janice Hoaglin
Are You My Mother by Alison Bechdel

4
This book was quite a departure from my usual reading; I have read parts of other graphic books, but never read one from start to finish. I won this book from GraphicNovelReporter.com, and was very happy to have it. I became interested in the story the author was telling, about her childhood, her relationship with her mother, and other relationships, with therapists and lovers. And I loved the drawings. Ms. Bechdel has been a cartoonist for many years, and her drawings greatly enhanced the text. Interwoven through this recounting of her life are quotes from several different psychoanalysts, whose statements the author includes as she explores various aspects of her own life. I am now a fan of graphic literature!

Janice Baly
The Boys on the Bus by Timothy Crouse

4
This book is an informative, contemporaneous account of the presidential primaries and general election campaigns in 1972. For someone who was following politics at that time, it was especially interesting to learn more about what was going on behind the scenes and the role that the press played (and should have played).

Rosanne Sharkey
The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjlain

3
Not quite finished, however, I find the book interesting. The genocide of the Armenian's in Turkey is depicted quite graphically and and I find that I can only read it in small bites. I am glad that I am reading it though. Love all his books.

Amy Nash
What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

4
What would you do if you woke up and someone told you you were ten years older and your life is NOTHING like you remembered. Many of the book's themes struck particularly close to home...but I don't want to be a spoiler. Definitely worth adding to your "To Read" stack.

Paula Barclay
Moloka'i by Alan Brennert

4
This is a thrilling read about a young girl who is sent to a leper colony. She is taken from her family only to find herself alone to face the hardships of a leper's life. I am anxious to finish the book to see if it continues her life as an adult. She is a strong character as a young child, so I am hoping to see her character develop as and adult.

Susan Johnson
The Hidden Child by Camilla Lackberg

4
Another great one by Camilla Lackberg. Her writing style is much like Steig Larsson. She weaves the characters into a most interesting murder mystery. Great ending!

Francisca E B
The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim

4
Lovely story of four women seeking nothing more than to escape their lonely, unhappy London lives, and finding friendship, love, peace and promises for the future in sunny Italy.

Francisca E B
Little Bee by Chris Cleave

2
2.5** This is the story of a Nigerian woman, hardly more than a girl, and the British couple who came across her on the beach, what they witnessed and what they wish to forget. Cleave alternates narrators from chapter to chapter. Little Bee is likeable, though she makes some odd choices and suffers great guilt as a result. Sarah, however, is a selfish woman who can’t seem to decide what she wants and leaves a path of destruction behind her as she careens through life. I felt Cleave couldn’t decide what kind of book he was writing --- an expose of big oil’s practices in the developing world? A story of a broken marriage? Or a young girl’s journey from a horrific life towards a future full of potential?

Nancy Banks
Once We Were Brothers by Ronald Balson

5
Exciting read!

Peggy jaroma
The Witness by Nora roberts

3
Just started yesterday, a little slow but am hoping it will pick up

Nancy Gallagher
Gone West by Carola Dunn

5
Nice cozy mystery. Always guessing as to " who done it."

Laura McDonald
Red Cell by Mark Henshaw

4
Mr. Henshaw makes a very strong showing in his first novel. It is written in an authentic voice that can only have come from his years with the CIA. I expect him to improve with experience as a writer. That is not to say this isn't an excellent read! The plot centers on two CIA officers and a weapon developed in China. If you keep up with current international events, you will be intrigued at the possibilities this story raises. I enjoy reading a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction, and this was a very satisfying addition to the thriller category.

Julie H
Pies and Prejudice by Ellery Adams

3
Adams sends the usual cozy fare on end with a voyage into magical realism. Ella Mae and the strong women in her life have certain gifts. Detecting being only one of many! Cute beginning to a new series.

Pat Pascale
The Last Boy Friend by Nora Roberts

5
It does not get any better than this if you enjoy a romantic novel with characters that you remember long after you finish the last page. And to be part of renovation of the Inn at Boonsboro adds to this part two of the Trilogy. Just can not put this one down and love the ghost. She adds a lot to the already touching plot. Just impatient to continue to part three. Nora Roberts always good is perhaps the best in this series.

Joan Burton
Summerland by Elin Hilderbrand

4
Great summer read, with great descriptions of Nantucket. The story unfolds through the voices of the characters and Hilderbrand does a good job developing each one so they all blend together to create another winner for her.

Donna Hall
Home by Toni Morrison

3
Moving book of one man's trials.

Angela Satalino
The Winner by David Baldacci

4
As usual, Baldacci has got me from the first page. It's hard to put any of his books down and this one is no exception. What would you do if you were asked to be the next big lottery winner?

Audrey
Maine by J. Courtney Sullivan

4
Wish there was the ability to make 4 1/2 stars. Thanks to Bookreporter for sending the lovely read. Sullivan packs so much into this family saga. The Kellehers win a property on the Maine coast that becomes the center of the families summer life. Sullivan shows the personalities of the characters wonderfully, the only disappoint in the book is that there was a last page and I had to leave Maine (fingers crossed that they might return). Highly recommended.

Julie H.
Red Velvet Revenge by Jenn McKinlay

3
Angie and Mel are on the road in Oz's new tricked out cupcake van to sell cupcakes at big rodeo up in Juniper Pass. A friendly wager with a neighboring BBQ van leads to possible vandalism. When the famed rodeo rider Ty Stokes is found dead in a barn, Mel and Angie team up and stumble across clues in their normal fashion. Business partner Tate, Oz and Marty accompany them to Juniper Pass and all are important parts of the tale. I enjoy the antics of these Fairy Tale Cupcake bakery folks and can't wait for the next installment.

Sandra Goldberg
Sins of the Father by Jeffrey Archer

4
I feel like I am a member of the family. Can't wait for his next book

Judy O.
The Deposit Slip by Todd M. Johnson

4
Erin Larson is cleaning out her father's lock box after his death and finds a $10,000,000 deposit slip from a local bank. When she goes to the bank to inquire about it, she gets a run-around. Nobody knows anything about it. She hires young attorney Jared Neaton to help her and there it gets interesting. Threats and violence ensue. I really enjoyed this fast-paced book, and it reminded me of a John Grisham plot.

Julie H.
Out of Sight, Out of Time by Ally Carter

4
Amnesia, European travel, crumbling buildings and it all begins during the first semester of senior year. Who wouldn't want to be a Gallagher Girl? Carter has created a wonderful place for these wonderful characters to live and grow. I have enjoyed each exciting installment of the series.

Jane McCown
Heartbroken by Lisa Unger

4
I just started this book, and it has already drawn me in. Lisa Unger always has such well developed characters and plots. Her three main protagonists have been introduced, and I look forward to following their stories.

Julie H.
Kingdom of Strangers by Zoe Ferraris

4
Disturbing as the crime described in the book, Ferraris drops us into another hot, dark tale of a side of Saudi Arabia we don't see very often. Inspector Ibrahim Zahrani sets forth as a big case breaks in Jeddah. At the same time, on a personal note, his mistress Sabria goes missing. Always one of the more liberal minded at the station, he turns to Katya Hajazi for help in both instances. Katya surprises once again. This woman, who like many in her city shouldn't even be looking at unrelated men, turns on her smarts, making connections that seasoned detectives haven't found. This was a case full of evil, made readable by the characters Ferraris has created over these past three novels.

kathy novotny
The Sojourn by Andrew Krivak

4
The story of a young man's sojourn into the world before, during, and following World War I. At a time when the Great War is receding into the annals of distant history, "The Sojourn" a powerful story of a young soldier, Josef Vinich, who hails from a disenfranchised and impoverished family in rural Austria-Hungary, arrives in it's short but elegaic and poetic form. The narrative beautifully written and filled with tension details life as its protagonist learns to accept responsibility in his poverty-stricken, rural Hungarian village and shows his strength as an individual on the "Forgotten Front" of the First World War. The prose is so pared down that if you take a word out of a sentence or a sentence out of a paragraph, it would collapse.

Julie H.
Spring Fever by Mary Kay Andrews

3
A new Andrews summer novel, complete with large, slightly dysfunctional family and gritty southern heroine. Annajane may not be the only one to think it's strange she attends her ex-husband's wedding, but the events that follow can only unfold in true southern, small town fashion. From the local soda (and employer) Quixie to the complicated romantic lives of all involved, Andrews has delivered another fun summer read.

Sharon Long
The Last Child by John Hart

4
Very good book, great author. I have read his 3 other books as well. He is one of the best "unknown" authors !!! All mysteries and each book is a stand alone, all set in the south.

ADMIN OFFICER
The Meryl Streep Movie Club by Mia March

4
I am reading “The Meryl Streep Movie Club.” Can’t help it --- it’s about Maine. Plus it made me order “Out of Africa” in Blue Ray. Couldn’t help it when the book referenced Meryl Streep as Karen Blixen says “Perhaps he knew, as I did not, that the earth was made round so that we would not see too far down the road.” (I can just hear her Danish accent.)

Jean M
Coup D'Etat by Ben Coes

3
This is a very exciting book of the Dewey Andres series. I do not plan to read any more of this series because it is a bit too much to believe.

Jean Lesslie
Milk Glass Moon by Adriana Trigiani

5
I love this series about Ave Maria, her adventures, neighbors and friends. This is the third in the series which is so good that you want the series to continue with many more books. It is nice to make friends such as these.

Jean Lesslie
Never Tell by Alafair Burke

5
This is a young author whom I believe that we will read many more of her books. Our heroine is a lawyer. If you like legal thrillers, you will like this one which is Burke's latest.

Vickie Watts
Backfire: An FBI Thriller by Catherine Coulter

5
This newest title by Coulter will not disappoint! It starts with a bang (literally) and has so many curves and twists that you may need a pill for motion sickness. Seriously, it is one of her best books, with some new characters from the U.S. Marshall's office in San Francisco and lots of non-stop action. It is a rather long book, but I couldn't put it down and read it in only a day and a half. The villain is not only believable but there is a well-written twist to the story that you will not be able to guess at...no way! MAX solves the mystery. Can you?!?

Jean M
Leader of the Pack by David Rosenfelt

5
If you like humor with your legal thrillers, this is the series for you. Andy Carpenter is the hero who besides being a defense attorney, runs a rescue foundation for golden retrievers. There is always an abundant supply of self deprecating humor. This is the latest in the series and is a home run for Rosenfelt.

SHARLENE RIEKE
Nightwoods by Charles Fraizer

4
Had me hooked from page one. Well written and I didn't want to put it down.

Bridget
Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann

5
Compelling novel about two cousins. Starts after World War II, goes up through the 1960s. A lot of it takes place at their family summer home on Mother's Vineyard, but I would not characterize it as a "summer read." Their children (each cousin has one child) are also main characters. Could not put it down.

Bridget
The Soldier's Wife by Joanna Trollope

4
Really liked this book about a woman married to a career soldier. She has to juggle lots of things while he is deployed and contend with a new set of issues when he returns home. Only thing I disliked is that it reminded me a little too much of The Rector's Wife (wife wants a career, but can't have it because of husband's career. Unhappy teen aged daughter)

Bonnie Tollefson
Poacher's Son by Paul Doiron

3
This is the first book in a new series. It has potential but seems a little inconsistent. Hopefully the author and characters will grow and develop.

Eileen Palmer
The Headmaster's Wager by Vincent Lam

5
Vincent Lam’s masterful debut about the Chinese experience in Vietnam from 1966 to 1975 is both an exploration of the dangers of nationalism and a testimony to the power of love. It captures how difficult it is to know how political/world events are going to end and what we can do to protect ourselves and those we love. I found it to be both captivating and heartbreaking.

Jean V.
If Books Could Kill by Kate Carlisle

4
An enjoyable cozy centered around book restoration and binding. I found it light, yet entertaining. This was the second book in the series. I'll definitely read more.

I, Michael Bennett by James Patterson

5
This is by far the best of the Michael Bennett series that Mr. Patterson has written. Michael Bennett lives in Manhattan with his ten children and a nanny Mary Catherine. Michael is always involved in series cases and this time he captures a drug leader. Revenge is in the cards not only for Mr. Bennett but his entire family. When things happen at home the stories just takes off and leaves you wanting to read more and more it is great.

Love this book!

Friends Forever by Danielle Steel

4
Danielle Steel writes one of the most touching and emotional books I have read. It is about five friends who meet in kindergarten, three boys and two girls. It follows them thru 12th grade when they graduate and continues on as they have made a pact to stay "Friends Forever." We see some wonderful things happen and some of the friends accomplish the dreams they had wanted and goals they had set for themselves. Unfortunately the price does not come without pain, suffering and heartache. It involves the parents and the five children and you wont be able to put it down.

Marie-Louise Molloy
My Berlin Kitchen by Luisa Weiss

5
If you love to eat and like Julie & Julia, you will LOVE this book!

Lynn Jarrett
The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian

5
I am just starting this book, but can already tell that it is going to be a good one. I am a big fan of Bohjalian and have looked forward to this book for a while. In the Prologue, the girl of a boy/girl set of twins speaks about her grandparents. She describes her Grandfather as playing the oud while her aunt belly danced for everyone. Her Grandfather loved his breakfasts --- cereal and a lamb chop every morning. He loved American cereals with Frosted Flakes and Cocoa Puffs being his favorites. Bohjalian is great at describing his characters so well that you feel as though you are looking over his shoulder. This talent of his draws me into every book he writes. I am looking forward to a weekend of reading. More later.

Sheila Dixon
The Fault in our Stars by John Green

5
I almost never give 5-star ratings. A really well-written thriller might be a great read, but is it comparable to, say, To Kill a Mockingbird? But I’m giving this one 5 stars. I loved this book, really loved it. Yes, it’s about teens and cancer. But it’s not a cancer book. As a character in the book says, “cancer books suck.” This is a love story, but it’s not sentimental and predictable. Instead, it’s smart and funny and heartbreaking and completely wonderful.

Joyce sigman
Defending Jacob by William Landay

4
A page turner. As seen through a parents point of view.

John Warner
Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

4
I don't generally pick up YA novels to read; however, I did in this case for a book discussion group. I have enjoyed this trilogy; however, I would recommend that parents be discerning in allowing a child that is not in the YA age group to read this because of the troubling themes.

Beverly Lychako
Dead Scared by S.J. Bolton

5
If you like psychological thrillers, then S. J. Bolton is a must read. In Dead Scared, Psychiatrist Evi Oliver asked the police to investigate a series of suicides which she believes are in fact murders. No one really believes the suicides are murders, but a police women goes under cover and the suspense begins and build through out the book as the police come closer to the truth.

Mary Champagne
Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum

5
I am always torn between reading new books and going to my "to read" shelf and finding something I am overlooking, but put on the shelf for a reason. I guess that is one of the many benefits of having a "to read" shelf. This is one of those books, like Sarah's Key that tells a story of the secrets that were part of the Holocaust and the sacrifices that were made. The fact that an adult is reaching back into long forgotten childhood memories make this even more powerful.

Connie Fischer
Outrageous Confessions of Lady Deborah by Marguerite Kaye

5
Lady Deborah Napier, the Dowager Countess of Kinsail, has chosen to live a quiet and solitary life in the years since the early death of her husband. The miserly funds given her from her late husband's brother are barely enough to keep her. Thus for some time, she has been using her enormous writing talents by penning erotic novels under an assumed name that have been huge sellers especially to matrons and even some men. The novels allow her to release her suppressed sexual fantasies squelched by the coldness and cruelty of her late husband. However, the scars from the mental abuse and degradation inflicted upon her over the years by her late husband are many and run deep leaving her convinced she is worthless as a woman.

Rhoda MacMaster
The Advocate's Conviction by Teresa Burrell

5
The Advocate series including "The Advocate's " book three are page turners. Once you get into the book you are hooked. All three books were good.

Mary Zelli
Echoes of Titanic by Mindy Starns Clark and John Campbell Clark

4
Only partway through reading it and can't put it down. Love the history part and the way the characters lives are interwoven, history, mystery great!!!

Natasha Rose
Bringing Up The Bodies by Hilary Mantel

5
A fascinating look at history

Ann Hengst
The Line Between Here and Gone by Andrea Kane

4
A mystery --- a child needs a bone marrow transplant and his mom searches for his birth father to see if he can be a donor before its to late.

Robin Weiss
The Fiddler by Beverly Lewis

5
I'm about halfway done, but the thing that strikes me the most is...no matter what your background/beliefs all of our problems are the same! This is an awesome story that accidentally intertwines a strong, but troubled heroine with slower paced Amish community.

Dar Sery
Citizens of London by Lynne Olson

5
This is a "can't put down" book that has suspense, drama, history, romance and the fear of evil! It takes place when Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt were in turmoil and discussion on whether the United States should enter the War against Hitler when Germany was bombing London on a regular basis. Americans, Edward R.Murrow, Averell Harriman and John Gilbert Winant who were in London at the time and became friends with Churchill were determined to save Britain from Hitler and convinced a cautious Franklin Roosevelt to support the British. This is a historical book with historical insight --- a terrific work!

Laura Busch
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

5
75 % finished and loving every minute of it

Stephanie Wolfe
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh

4
So many flowers and so many reasons to give them and so little time to figure it out!

Christina Allen
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
Amazing! I was a little weary at first since I hate the circus but this novel will totally entrance the reader. Full of magic, love, loyalty, competition, and mystery. Great characters. I was very sad when this one ended because I was so immersed in the story.

Bobbie Hacker
Calling Invisable Women by Jeanne Ray

4
This book is about a woman who wakes up one day to find that she is Invisible but her family doesn't notice. As it turns out, there are others like her. An interesting concept as I have "felt" Invisible to my family from time to time. This is a good, quick and fun read. I loved it.

Bobbie Hacker
Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson

4
This story is told from an 11 year old girl's perspective as the world's rotation starts to slow down. It is the story of how her family copes with the radical changes experienced due to the "slowing". How life goes on at home and at school and "new normals" become normal. It really leaves you with a sense of how things could change. If not by the earth slowing down then by some other dramatic changes in our world. I enjoyed reading this author's first novel and look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

Melanie S.
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

4
I couldn't decide whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars, but ultimately decided on 4 ( 3-1/2?) because ultimately I ended up liking this book. The latter half was much more engaging than the first half. This was a coming of age story set in the "what if " scenario of the earth beginning to spin more slowly and the ramifications of that slowing on the climate, on plants and animals in the environment, on society and on the mental/physical health of humans. The story, as told through the eyes of a 12 year old girl, was poignant, and I did like the ending, which other reviewers said they did not. Not sure if I would recommend as a must-read though.

marion Miller
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty

4
What a great read! This book starts with vivid descriptions of life in the 1920's, especially women's lives. It tells the story of Cora Carlisle and her "different" kind of marriage. Cora gets the opportunity to discover her past when she becomes a chaperone for a young woman from her hometown of Wichita, Kansas. She arrives in New York, tries to find out how she became an orphan and her life changes considerable. The life of Louise, her charge, changes too. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to Book Clubs.

Marian Furukawa
Flash and Bones by Kathy Reichs

4
Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, is asked to dig into a cold case of two persons who disappeared many years ago during a big NASCAR race at the Charlotte Speedway. Once she begins, she is embroiled in the intrigues of a white supremacist military group, a body discovered in a drum near the Speedway, and a connection to biotoxins. How she goes about solving this mystery is deftly told around the venue of stockcar racing and its environs.

Andrea Arbie
The Hangman by Faye Kellerman

3
Not the best in the series, but still a readable who-dun-it. I liked the character of Gabe and look forward to his exploits in future books,

Gail Satterthwaite
The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton

5
It is so interesting to not only read about life in the early 1900's but to experience the writing style of the period.

Christine Freeman
The Weird Sister by Eleanor Brown

5
This book was incredible! I really enjoyed all the Shakespeare references throughout the story. I also enjoyed all the family dynamics. The story was not predictable and I was pleased with that.

Robert Runyon
Black List by Brad Thor

4
I have read each of Brad Thor's prior books and would not missed this one for anything.

Nanette McCall
Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness

5
Traveling back in time with Diana and Matthew is just what the doctor ordered!

Richard Garcia
Callahans Crosstime Saloon series by Spider Robinson

5
Being older I'm rereading most of my favorites from years back. I'm reading a series called The Three Investigators written by various writers working for the same company. Also reading Doc Savage by Kenneth Robeson which is a cover name used by Lester Dent and others working for the same company. Also reading The Death Dealer series by James R. Silke/Frank Frazetta. Other authors include Micheal Moorcock,E.R. Burroughs, Sir A.C. Doyle

Nell Landman
Wild by Cheryl Strayed

5
The book was inspirational. It made you realize that when you are determined you can overcome any obstacle in your path.

Jane Coward
Into The Free by Julie Cantrell

5
A beautifully written book..Julie's character development is unforgettable. Millie is a young girl you won't soon forget as she struggles to grow up with many obstacles in her path. Our introduction to life on the rodeo circuit and traveling Gypsies during the Depression brings new insight to the story. And the end leaves the reader wanting more --- a book you should pick up for a great summer read!

Karen White brings us another good summer read with Sea Change. Her characters are believable and well-developed. Parallel lives between Pamela in 1815 and Ava in 2011 keep the storyline moving and our interest piqued throughout the book and the beautiful setting of St. Simons Island in Georgia can't be beat! If you are headed to the beach, make sure to take this one along!

Jane Coward
Porch Lights by Dorothy Benton Frank

3
Another good summer read from Dorothy Benton Frank, who brings us back to her beloved Sullivan's Island in the South Carolina Lowcountry to meet and follow the lives of three generations of a strong Southern family. Put it in your beach bag..you won't regret it!

CAROL
Final Crossings by Carter Wilson

5
Non-stop action in this thriller. Great book!

Francisca E B
The History of Love by Nichole Krauss

4
The novel is a paean to the written word, in the form of a book --- a medium that survives the Holocaust, a transatlantic journey, flood, plagiarism, fire and international translations to touch men and women, of three different generations, on three continents. What connects the disparate characters in this novel is their loneliness, and their search for love. The chapters are narrated in turn by the various characters; the different styles sometimes slow the plot too much. Still, Krauss can craft a sentence that stays with you; she weaves a rich tapestry, revealing her character’s pain and joy, and arriving at a poignant conclusion that is simply poetic.

Janet Nydegger
Wild by Cheryl Strayed

3
I had a hard time getting into the book, but after she started hiking the PCT it became interesting. I did not have warm feelings for the author as she told her story about hitting bottom and finding her way back. She had some sadness and disappointments, but she also behaved in a way that hurt others. Even the name she made up for herself sounds self-indulgent. That said, she is an excellent writer and the book is worth reading.

Bonnie Gluhanich
Shade It Black: Death and After in Iraq by Jessica Goodell

4
Non-fiction account of the author's time in Iraq working as a Marine in the Mortuary unit. Not a "fun" read by any means, but important and sobering.

mary branham
The Last Promise by Richard Paul Evans

5
I loved this book. About a woman who marries an Italian man and goes to live in Italy with him and her little boy. The boy has asthma very bad . The husband travels all the time and is a womanizer. An American man comes to Italy running from a terrible thing that happened to him in America. He moves into an apt. in the villa and falls in love with the wife and little boy. What happens next is so sad and also so wonderful. Loved all the descriptions of Italy and the vineyards and the food. Enjoyed every moment of this book.

Vicki Rogers
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

5
This book puts you on a roller coaster ride and keeps you guessing until the end. It is totally unique and riveting and you won't want to put it down. Flynn tells the tale of a seemingly ideal marriage gone bad --- so very bad. On their 5th wedding anniversary, Nick comes home to find that Amy is missing. His home reveals that a struggle has taken place. As time goes by and Amy isn't located, the police begin to suspect that Nick is responsible for her disappearance. With so many plot twits you don't know who is right or wrong and you will be eager to find out what happens next.

Muriel Logan
Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton

4
A delightful look into the social class system of the later 1800s in New York and the lives of main characters May, Ellen, and Newland as they interact with one another and others. It was interesting to explore how certain indiscretions and situations were handled in upper class society at that time.

Bobbie Davis
The Forgetting Tree by Tatjana Soli

4
Reading an advance readers edition. Story of a family trying to keep a farm together. Also a story of separation and how an illness affects all.

Anne Spier
Karma by Cathy Ostlere

5
A thoroughly delightful read. The book is written in verse, but not rhyming verse, just a free-flowing, beautifully written and emotionally satisfying prose. As I finished this wonderful book, I was surprised to find that it was written for young adult readers. As a reader who long ago left her young adult days behind I was impressed by the content, character development and story line of this lyrical novel which follows the relationship of two adolescents from differing cultures as they struggle to find common ground. Our book club loved this book and is anxiously awaiting additional books by this author, even if we are not her target audience.

Susan Thibaud
I, Michael Bennett by James Patterson

5
Fast paced, exciting suspense. He did it again. A great read!

Michele
Unorthodox by Deborah Feldman

5
Terrific novel about a very young Satmar Hasidic woman who pries her way out of a stifling marriage and eventually her closed, tight-knit, secretive community. It is superbly written by an author who knows her subject intimately.

Sandy McCullough
The Elusive Mr. McCoy by Brenda L. Baker

4
If you can get past the first couple of chapters you will really like this book. While trying to identify a man who collapses in a Portland, Oregon coffee shop, two wallets are found, one belonging to Dave McCoy, the other to Eric McCoy. Devastated by their comatose husband's betrayal, Kendra and Lesley voluntarily join forces in an attempt to piece together a true picture of the man they both fell in love with. Instead, they uncover a vast web of deceit as they learn their husband lived a third life neither of them suspected.

Paige Weiner
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

3
The book was good but the ending was not so good. I felt that the ending offered no closure to the plot. The characters were complex and the storyline was intense.

Jayme G
Wide Open by Larry Bjornson

4
In Wide Open Bjornson has blended elements of the western novel and historical fiction to create a fast-paced, entertaining story about the conflict between the farmers and cattlemen which arose during the settling of the Great Plains. Bjornson’s sense of place is so detailed and descriptive that the town of Abilene, Kansas is just as much a character as our young protagonist, Will Merritt. Wide Open is an enjoyable read and would be a perfect jumping off point for those new to the western genre.

Linda Johnson
Dracula the Undead by Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt

3
This is a sequel to the original Dracula written in 1897. One of the authors is the great grand nephew of Bram Stoker. I thought I was getting the original Dracula when I requested this from the library for a road trip with the guys. They only heard about 1/3 of the book, but I finished it. It was exciting and had a wonderful narrator. Now, I need to read the original.

Bridget
Heartbroken by Lisa Unger

4
A little hard to get into, but once I did I couldn't put this book down. Several members of a family and an outsider are all headed to Heart Island in the Adirondacks. They all feel differently about the place, and when they collide their worlds change.

Debbie M
Perfect Sax by Jerrilyn Farmer

2
I had thought I would not read anymore of Farmer's books, but a friend convinced me to continue with the series. This mystery series is not the graphic gore of James Patterson. The series combines beach fluff with a little mystery. The series is set in Los Angeles, and expounds on that superficial existence. Money and power is God. The clothing emphasis reminds me of Susan Kandel's series with detective Cece Caruso. The series centers on the lavish parties given by Madeline Bean and her partner, Wesley. The actual murder is not the center stage in this series that does not feature graphic autopsies. This is a gentle mystery and full of fun and partying.

Joan Burton
Tigers In Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann

2
After reading about this book on Bookreporter, I read it and was very disappointed. The story line did not flow smoothly, and the plot did not hold up. All the main characters were dysfunctional, flitting through life with no direction or concern for others. Certain circumstances did not have any real truth to them, and it felt like sections were missing. What was all the hype about????

Kit Murphy
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

4
It twists and turns like a roller coaster then stops on a dime. Clever and chilling with a surprise ending that will keep you wondering even after the last page.

Liz DiBona
A Summer Affair by Elin Hilderbrand

5
A great summer read.

Diane Porter
The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian

4
A harsh subject handled in a manner that makes it almost acceptable. The characters are carefully drawn, and although I have to put it down from time to time just to handle the intensity, I'm eagerly awaiting my return each time.

Phyllis Gronewold
The 500 by Matthew Quirk

4
A fast paced novel of Washington D.C., The 500 takes you behind the scenes as Mike Ford is recruited by a high end firm that seeks to control the most powerful people in the county. The 500 really makes me look at the current headlines and wonder what is actually happening and who is pulling the strings.

Nancy Buenemann
The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian

5
I have read all of Chris Bohjalian's books and he has outdone himself with this one. Chris uses his Armenian heritage to write a historical love story that travels between Aleppo, Syria in 1915 and Bronxville, NY in 2012. I don't give many books five stars, but I did for this one.

michele cmelo
Friends Forever by Danielle Steel

5
Another winner for Danielle Steel. I really enjoyed this book!

Ann Hill
The Crossroad by Beverly Lewis

4
Wonderful story about the Amish way of life. Interesting characters and a story line that is easy to follow but yet holds my attention. This was the 2nd book in a 2 book series. But each book is easily read and understood even if you haven't read the other.

Lynn Ketelsen
V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton

5
You would think that the "Alphabet" crime books would have become formulaic by now, but not so! Every new book featuring PI Kinsey Milhone is full of new surprises! "V is for Vengeance" continues on that tradition! Every book shows a new side or facet of Kinsey and the story lines are always exciting and contain a fun twist!

Sherrie Payne
In The Garden of Beasts by Erik Larsen

5
I am a big fan of WW2 books and like to get different perspectives on the same period in history. This one reads like a novel but is factual - backed up by footnotes. Very interesting story of the American ambassidor and family in early Hitler's Berlin.

beth mitchell
The Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar by S. Joinson

3
Interesting to read about a different time period and a different part of the world.

Nicolette Bonzani
Defending Jacob by William Landay

5
As a 20Something, Defending Jacob left me pondering my parents and their struggles raising my brother and me. As I've had no children of my own I cannot identify with the story in that way but was still emotionally connected through the loving family relationships. Although the characters kept me invested unil the end I do wish it could have wrapped up more compactly. However this will still be on my top picks list for the year so far.

Dorothy Boyum
The Healing by Jonathan O'Dell

5
Wonderful book. Definitely a "must read" for all!

Jill McAfee
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

5
Interesting and amazing story behind the He-La cell line. Medical information was presented on a readable and enjoyable level . I would highly recommend this book!

Elaine Campbell
Acceptable Loss by Anne Perry

5
The latest in the William Monk series is a page turner and very exciting. This book, hopefully, is a lead-in for the next book.

Darlene Reid-Rericha
The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson

5
Can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Kaylynn
Porch Lights by Dorothea Benton Frank

2
Contains a good cast of characters, but a predictable plot.

Mary Healey
Harriet and Isabella by Patriicia O'Brien

4
In this book the reader actually gets into the mind of all the Beecher family . History comes alive and we enter the world of the family of the woman who wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe. What a discussion---truth versus loyalty. Many surprises unfold as the family members tackle with their decision to defend their brother accused of adultery. They must decide whether or not to protect the family name or, as one sister did, to tell the truth. This is interesting reading with much history and a great story.

Brenda Wiltshire
A Dozen Deadly Roses by Kathy Bennett

4
I found another great author, Kathy Bennett. She has written two books so far in this series, A Dozen Deadly Roses and A Deadly Blessing. I am reading the first one right now - A Dozen Deadly Roses. It's a great book with a strong female lead, Jade Donovan, and her partner, Mac Stryker. There is, of course, a romantic side storyline in this book as well. A fast paced, quick read.

Sonia Zaffiris
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed

4
Interesting read so far and the protagonist has just started her trek.

Lauren Guydan
This Love Is Not For Cowards: Salvation and Soccer in Ciudad Juárez by Robert Andrew Powell

5
Fascinating non-fiction look at life in deadly Juarez, Mexico, just across the border from El Paso, TX. The story is told in a first person narrative style by the author who moved to Juarez and lived there for a year. Don't be put off by the title, this is not a sports book!

Sarah
Death and The Girl Next Door by Darynda Jones

5
This is the first book in the new YA series by Darynda Jones. This book is unique and original with enough mystery to keep you on the edge of your seat!

Karin Anderson
First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

5
This is a funny story about a Grim Reaper who happens to be a normal girl. A fantastic, light read!

Phyllis Holt
The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach

4
This book is not only about playing baseball, but about inter-personal relationships in a small Midwestern college. It is a first novel which is difficult to put down.

Michael McAdam
Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris

5
So far I love it! This has been a great series. A few of the books had such fantastic plots and all of the books have the characters I have grown to love so I am really enjoying it so far (about a 1/3 of the way through). CH is very good at humanizing even supernatural creatures and making me root for them (or dislike them depending)... will be sad to see this book series come to an end....

Craig
Falconer by John Cheever

4
Strange and vibrantly written tale about coping in prison and dealing with regret.

Julie H.
Pies and Prejudice by Ellery Adams

3
Adams dips into a bit of magical realism with a new pie shop opening in Havenwood, GA. Ella Mae LeFaye is a great new character surrounded by some great secondary characters.

Janet P Bedell
The Fallen Angel by Daniel Silva

5
Another great Gabriel Allon thriller. Just enough twists and turns to keep the reader totally engaged. Loved it!

Lea Ann Morris
Please Look After Mom by Kyung Sook Shin

4
This book tells about a Korean wife, suffering from early dementia, who is lost on the subway in Seoul when her husband and she become separated. She is never seen again by her family. The book is told from the viewpoint of members of her family and one segment is told by "Mom" herself. The tales are poignant with a lot of regrets by husband, son and daughter as to how they let mother work, work, work and yet be almost an invisible member of the family. But, she loved each of them and they at last recognize her worth after her disappearance. A book to jar us into looking at the members of our own families and how we see, or don't see, them. Well worth reading.

Lea Ann Morris
Soldier Dogs by Maria Goodavage

5
This book is non-fiction, filled with accounts of dogs used by the United States military from early wars to the killing of Osama Bin Laden. Their heroics, the love between them and their handlers is well written and wriggles into one's heart as one is reading. For history buffs, animal lovers and those who wish to know about the bond between man and dog, this is a worthwhile book.

Linda Johnson
The Shoemaker's Wife by Adriana Trigiani

5
Marvelous fictional recounting of the author's grandparents immigrating, separately, to the U.S. from the same area of northern Italy. They had met there when they were in the mid-teens and met several times in their new country. This is a genuine love story that had me in tears by the end of the book.

Amanda Cargile
The Forgotten 500 by Gregory Freeman

5
A fabulous read about the little known rescue of over 500 downed airmen behind enemy lines during WWII through the combined efforts of a few American intelligence officers, the airmen themselves, and countless Yugoslav people (in the midst of fighting their own civil war). Think you don't like history because it's dry? This one reads very much like a novel. Fabulous book!

Christina Greenawalt
First Grave On the Left by Darynda Jones

5
Witty, sarcastic, hilarious, sexy, and action packed. This book is a well written tale of a modern day Grim Reaper/ Private Investigator, named Charley Davidson. Charley is a coffee addicted P.I. with a sassy mouth, an uncanny knack for finding trouble, and the unusual ability to talk to the dead. Her average day starts with several cups of coffee, trying to help a ghost or two pass on, and then heading to work. Oh, and she's also being haunted by an insanely sexy, but frightening entity named Reyes. But I digress, Charley is by far my favorite female lead character ever and I have never laughed as hard at a book as I have when I read this book. If you have a good sense of humor and enjoy a little paranormal romance then read this. :)

Charity Hornback
Keeping Secret by Sierra Dean

5
This is the fourth book in the series and the best so far. From a romp in the swamp to a run down on an isle the action and laughs never stop in Keeping Secret.

Dorothy Cowling
Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny

5
This is a superb mystery series set in Quebec Canada and is almost flawless. Do start at the beginning of the series as the character and story development threads its way through them all. I can hardly wait for the next book.

Marie Ledin
Saving Faith by David Baldacci

4
Another great David Baldacci book. Involving politics, the FBI, and the CIA--it makes one wonder about the real world when comparing to some news events that are written about. It includes personal relationships with a bit of romance.

Nancy Hausladen
Left for Dead by J.A. Jance

4
If you are a fan of J.A Jance, you will enjoy this one. This is an Ali Reynolds novel. It begins with the Border Patrol finding a badly beaten girl. She is alive, but was supposed to have been dead. The story begins on the first page, which is my favorite kind of book. I recommend reading this one.

Lois Lilling
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

4
This book is an epistolary tale which takes place during the days of World War II. Perfect reading during the Olympics. I highly recommend the book for book groups.

Mary Toelke
The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen

4
I have only just begun reading this novel which is the first installment of Adler-Olsen's Q series. I am already in love with detective Carl Morck. This is a "can't put down" book. Those who loved Stieg Larsson's books will enjoy this book--probably even more than Larsson's trilogy. A friend of mine lent this to me with the warning, "I stayed up til 3 AM to finish this. Had a hard time going to work the next day." I was reading on the train this morning on the way to work and just wanted to remain on the train and keep reading all day!

Marge Guthrie
Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann

4
This story takes place on Martha's Vineyard, just after World War II. As I was vacationing on Martha's Vineyard, thought this would be a good book to take. It's a family tale that has it all: suspense, glamour, secrets. I believe this is a first novel by Ms. Klaussmann, and I look forward to her next one!

Dana Hartmann
What Doesn't Kill You by Iris Johansen

4
Mystery and intrigue at Iris Johnasen's best! Getting up early to read and staying up late, too. Even taking it so work to read on break!

Susan Atkins
The Chocolate Jewel Case by Joanna Carl

5
This is about a lady who helps her aunt run a chocolate store and keeps coming across dead bodies. She has a lot of help from her family to solve the case. I love them, also lots of chocolate history in between chapters; very interesting to know.

Laura Adams
Divergent by Veronica Roth

4
Young Adult book somewhat similiar to The Hunger Games trilogy but not as good. Good read though (for adults as well).

Gail White
In the Kingdom of Men by Kim Barnes

4
A well written novel beginning in the heartland of America all the way to Saudi Arabia. So much info regarding the history of the relationship between Americans & Saudis, covering their customs & feeling & business dealings with Americans, as well as culture and emotions. I certainly learned a lot & could not put down this book 'till I finished.

Carroll Savage
Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind by Ann B. Ross

4
I am enjoying getting to know Miss Julia Springer, the recently widowed main character in this book! I am loving this author's style and wit. Glad that this is one of a series of books about this interesting character and know I will be reading more about her soon.

Gail White
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

4
What a wild, thrilling ride! Great original first novel from Kim about progressive, disturbing happenings on the earth. It is deeply moving, as I became so attached to the characters, mainly the 10 year old girl telling this crazy, but powerful, portrait of what could be our future.

Amy Lang
Moonlight Promises by Sherryl Woods

4
Love the fact that this romance is about a couple who is already married that is just trying to keep the love alive while dealing with their families and the baggage that each person brings into a relationship.

Tricia Douglas
The Inner Circle by Brad Meltzer

4
A suspenseful, intriquing fiction story about the "inner circle" of men closest to the President and making decisions only known to those few. It's been a while since I've read a Meltzer book and this one did not disappoint.

Tricia Douglas
The Shoemaker's Wife by Adrianna Trigiani

4
A quick read about Italian immigrants and their tolls and troubles. The story is based on Trigiani's grandparents in the early 1900s. It was a wonderful tale showing how hard everyone had to work to get ahead, how loved always prevailed, and the importance of family and friends. If you've read other Trigiani books, this one won't disappoint.

Cynthia Parry
The Winding Ways Quilt by Jennifer Chiaverini

5
Loved it. Perfect for book club readingx

Nancy Snodgrass
The Lost Ones by Ace Atkins

4
A great action adventure thriller with an engaging multi-layered hero and a terrific supporting cast. Quinn Colson is an many medalled ex-Ranger who returned home to Mississippi and ended up being its sheriff. The action includes gun-running, Mexican drug cartels, illegal immigrants and the kidnapping and selling of children. And amazingly a little romance. A wonderful fast read. Can't wait for the next one in the series.

Robin McKay
The Illusion of Certainty by Greg Messel

4
In the novel "The Illusion of Certainty" by Greg Messel, the author creates two parallel storylines. In the first, Marc Wilson is a happily married man with a successful business career and a wonderful family. In the second story, Alexandra Mattson, a single woman meets and falls in love with Sean. Both protagonists seem to be enjoying a great life, however, twists and turns will change that.

Judith Mroz
Iron House by John Hart

4
What a ride this author takes you on! There is great depth in his characters and it is easy to feel their thoughts. The plot was put out in layers until the end. A very good read. I am almost finished and my only complaint is that several parts seem to go on and on without end.

Donna Haueter
Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult

4
Jodi has done it again... a book hard to put down.

Sandy mcCullough

Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby. Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast.

5
So far, so good. Interesting conflict between the main characters, relatively plausible storyline about a potentially fatal drug somehow given to party goers.

It was soooo chilling--reminded me of the Manson murders but different. The ending will amaze you. Read it!!!

Pat S
The Litigators by John Grisham

He keeps getting better - really enjoyed this one!

Brenda Rumsey
All Summer Long by Susan Mallery

5
Susan Mallery's Fool Gold series gets better and better with each book and 'All Summer Long' is one of my favorites. Two people must get past their fears and first impressions and learn to trust someone with their hearts. Can a cranky firefighter with a heart of gold learn to believe that a underwear model has more to offer than a handsome body? Welcome to the land of Happy Endings.

Lynn Hough
The Book of Summers by Emylia Hall

3
I received this free book through the summer read contest and definitely enjoyed it while sitting on the beach. It's a light, easy read. The story itself if not a feel good one though. It made me appreciate the relationship I have with my mother even more.

Heather schrock
First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

5
This book is amazing and hilarious. I started laughing from page one. You won't put it down. Thankfully there are currently 2 (Second Grave on the Left and Third Grave Dead Ahead) more in this series available with more coming soon. (Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet available in October 2012)

Dorothy Gordon
The Salaryman's Wife by Sujata Massey

5
The first book in the series about Rei Shimura, a young Japanese American woman living and working in Japan. She has come to Japan to learn more about the culture and antiquities. On a New Year's vacation in the Japanese "Alps" she is caught up in what she believes to be a murder although the local police seem to be calling it suicide. Her own safety is precarious as someone tries to kill her. She has to find out the truth. Well written and very interesting with plenty of details about living and working in Japan. Rei is an outsider even though she looks Japanese. Old prejudices about foreigners die hard.

Tiffanie Holton
First Grave Dead Ahead by Darynda Jones

5
This series is awesome! It is a "can't put down" type of reading and will have you yearning for more. There are currently three books in the series and a fourth is due out in October. It has action, romance, and comedy all rolled into one.

Jill C Dann
The Tender Bar by J.R. Moehringer

4
I got the idea of this book and author from reading Andre Agassi's book called "OPEN". First off, my favorite read is a biography and/or memoir. This book is written with lots of humor and emotion. At times the author's life is so dysfunctional, yet you always feel the love somewhere in the chaos. I highly recommend it, not because its a pretty life to read about, but because it was so well written in spite of it. Enjoy!

Janice Baly
Winter Journal by Paul Auster

5
This book is a wonderfully written memoir that pulled me into the author's life from page one. I didn't want it to end.

Lori Barnes
Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James

4
I was a little reluctant to read this book; didn't think there could be much of a story line. However, there is and it's really good. It's a very descriptive and sexual book but with a really good story keeps you waiting for book 2.

Phyllis Sinclair
Let's Take the Long Way Home by Gail Caldwell

5
This memoir reminds us that we never know where we will find that one true friend. A wonderful story of friendship.

Laura Busch
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

5
Wow this book is awesome, constant twists and turns. Love it.

Kellie
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

4
This book picks up sometime after where The Hunger Games leave off. Katniss has been home for about 6 months. This book focuses on the impact Katniss and Peeta have on the rest of the Districts. People view the ending of this latest episode of the Hunger games to be a sign of rebellion and the Mockingjay becomes the symbol. As a result of this, Katniss senses that she, her family and Peeta are in danger. Things are happening around the districts and the tension is growing. This is another great work by Collins, however, it doesn’t have as much excitement and action as The Hunger Games. And being the second in the series, it leaves you hanging at the end. The best thing about this series is its unique theme.

LINDA BASS
Drusilla Blood by Miriam Cook

5
A very powerful story that spans 3 generations, where man sought to control beings of the underworld to have their power at any cost. Drusilla Blood, a child of a hippie mother who never knew the father, steered her career toward archaeology instead of the family tradition of being a midwife. After the scandal involving her married lover's betrayal she took off and settled for working in an occult shop, but after three years a heavy book was sent to her that she couldn't translate, then people died in heinous ways and she thought it had something to do with the festival she had attended... Miriam Cook pens book one of her trilogy that's bound to keep you awake all night long and rapidly reading. I can't wait for book two!!

4
This book totally surprised me! It took me a while to get into it (and in the while I probably finished 5 other books) but, once I picked it up again I just couldn't put it down! More than interesting, almost scary and intriguing how you knew who the killer was but as he/she had no name you didn't know anything! Blizzard writes a GREAT read!

This story was beautifully written by a man that saw it firsthand. From the beginning of Kennedy’s presidency to the tragic end of Mr. Kennedy's life. I love the way Mr. Hill described his relationship with the President, Mrs. Kennedy, and their children.

Ronna Lord
Broken Harbor by Tana French

5
Tana French expertly uses today's headlines to develop her psychological story line. Builders going broke, homes empty, job loses becoming more prevalent amongst the 'climbing' middle classes, and message boards on computers becoming the primary source for information, communications, and the hope of helpful comforting solutions to life's problems. Police procedural with great psychological impact on all the characters!

Ronna Lord
Yes Chef by Marcus Samuelsson

5
This story of a poor sick orphan boy who worked, tasted and cooked his way into top cooking shows like Top Chef and Chopped, cooked in the White House for the President of the USA, and opened one of the first fine dining restaurants in revitalized Harlem, is a must read for any foodie! Marcus fought the color barrier for hiring chefs in this country. 'He also tasted, tweaked and journaled his experiences in restaurants around the world to develop popular new recipes. YES CHEF would be interesting just because of it's factual information, but it actually reads like a fast passed novel! A spectacular read!!

Mary Bryant
Dream New Dreams by Jai Pausch

5
Almost finished reading this compelling biography from the wife of Randy Pausch who gave us "The Last Lecture." She pulls us into her everyday life dealing with the last two years of Randy's pancreatic cancer and subsequent death. Dealing with three small children certainly complicated life. She has moved on with her life after dealing with the loss of her 47 year old husband.

Melody Jeffrey
The Homecoming of Samuel Lake by Jenny Wingfield

4
Southern Gothic story told in an easygoing way with growing intensity. Great reading when you can sink your teeth into a nice juicy story.

Ruth
The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

This is the third in a series by Ruiz Zafon....superb book...mesmerizing!

Priscilla Escajeda
Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris

Interesting story of Framboise Simon who returns to a village on the banks of the Loire. Her mother is the infamous woman that the locals hold responsible for a tragedy during the German occupation.

Bridget
The Great Escape by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

5
Thought this would be a fluffy, light summer read, but turned out to be a little more. Character development was great. Thought the characters would be standard, but little by little more was revealed that made me want to NOT put this book down!

Melina Smith
Summer in the South by Cathy Holton

3
Summer in the South is a great vacation read! The story travels between present day and the 1920s as Ava tries to uncover the past secrets of a prominent southern family. With a little mystery and a little romance, it's the perfect way to spend some time with a glass of sweet tea.

Denise Beierbach
The Inn at Rose Harbour by Debbie Macomber

4
I am just getting into her series after reading this book. One must follow all her books to get a clear picture.

Fran
Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman

3
Having never read anything by this author, I did not know what to expect when I started reading this book. I found that I loved the characters, Fat Charlie, his brother, Spider, Rosie and even her mother. The characters were real; flawed yet lovable. The blend of fantasy in this quasi family drama lent a fairy tale style feel to this story.... with no expectation of the traditional happy ending. Overall, interesting... not my favorite book.

Gil Harris
One Shot at Forever by Chris Ballard

5
In 1971a small town high school baseball team in southern Illinois shocked the state by going to the state finals. The coach was a hippie consistent with the Vietnam protest, and his views conflicted with the small conservative city. However, the coach was loved by his students and team. An inspirational true story.

Lynn Demsky
A Family Reunion by Rod Pennington

5
This is a 5 star plus, plus read! What a delightful book to read! From page one right to the end I just couldn't put it down! This family reunion is nothing like any family anyone would expect! The laughs, surprises, twists and turns were just great! I will have to find all his books now! He even has a contest for the readers in the book! Pure heavenly reading!!!

P
Mirror's Fathom by Sheridan Hough

5
A page turning historical who-done it that examines the mystery surrounding a mirror with love letters hidden beneath its surface. Purportedly on the harbor floor in Malta, Mirror's fathom is a mediation on the measure of human purpose - but played out in exotic locations with characters that delight, charm, and puzzle. This debut novel from an acclaimed Soren Kierkegaard scholar and poet Sheridan Hough is a must read for those looking to fill the gap left with the passing of Iris Murdoch.

Kathy Vallee
The Body Box by Lynn Abercrombie

5
What a great book! So many twists and turns makes this a great cold case thriller. Such a hard to put down book.

Mary Champagne
In The Woods by Tana French

5
I don't know how I missed this book. It was written five years ago & won an Edgar for best mystery & made numerous book lists, but I did not come across it until I was reading rave reviews of her latest book, Broken Harbor, which was published this month & is definitely on my "Read me soon" list. Two murder mysteries are powerfully & seamlessly interwoven. The characters and action are so real it's like watching a movie... a very, very good movie .

Sherri
The Meryl Streep Movie Club by Mia March

5
I very much enjoyed this book about family and friendship and how trauma drives them apart and movies help bring them back together. Makes you want to watch movies with friends - especially Meryl Streep.

Sandy McCullough

A heart-pounding glimpse into the world of forensic psychiatry, Kill Swith introduces Dr. Claire Waters, a young dedicated forensic psychiatrist with person insights into the criminal mind. This book is a great thriller with a very surprising ending.

5
I was so looking forward to this book and it was worth the wait!

Elaine Baxter
True Sisters by Sandra Dallas

4
I started to read this book in the morning and by evening I was putting it down. It was a mesmerizing book. No one really knows how the lives of the earlier settlers of the Mormon Community played out, but this author has taken the facts from the history of the church and has woven a story of how they suffered on their trek to reach "The Promised Land." Reading this book gave me an insight to what people were made of in the early days of settling our country. I recommend this book to all women who think they have it tough today.

Monica Sleap
Farther Along: The Writing Journey of Thirteen Bereaved Mothers by Carol Henderson

5
This is a wonderful and emotional account of thirteen bereaved mothers who met ten years ago for a one day writing workshop and decided to meet again, and then again at least twice a year for the past ten years. The moms in the book wished such a book was available when they suffered the loss of their children.

Judith Scharle
Wicked Business by Janet Evanovich

3
I'm just getting into this novel. I believe there are characters from the Stephanie Plum series. Evanovich's sense of humor, as always, is superb!

Felipe Guimaraes
Salvation of a Saint by Keigo Higashino

5
After reading The Devotion of Suspect X last year, I could not wait to get my hands on Keigo Higashino's new novel, which will be released on October 2. Luckily, I got an ARC and I am devouring it. Not to be missed!

Amanda Mullins
The Next Best Thing by Jennifer Weiner

4
I absolutely adore Jennifer Weiner! I love her writing style, her characters, and her ability to tie up stories with a nice happy feeling at the end of them. Her 10th novel did not disappoint! I'm a huge fan of sitcoms, and the detail of the work that goes into writing air time kept me entertained. I was rooting for Ruth 'till the very end!

Anne-Marie Chandler
The bungalow by Sarah jio

5
Both a wonderful love story and fabulous mystery.

A beautifully written novel that spans days before the Titanic sailing and goes through World War I. This is a story of love, sacrifice, hope and forgiveness. You will be captivated with the fascinating historical details, realistic characters, and many twists and turns. Highly recommend.

Allison Gardner
Kingdom of Shadows by Barbara Erskine

3
Great story about Scotland & Robert the Bruce

Pat Pascale
Sleepwalker by Karen Robards

5
This is truly a page-turner that I could not put down. From an exciting speed boat ride in Michigan, to slipping and sliding in a snow storm to spending the night in a deer blind, Mick and Josh are hot, hot, hot. Who says cops and robbers don't mix? Robards' description of the Cayman Islands makes me want to pack and see if it is really that beautiful. I read this book in one day and hated for it to end.

Lynn Demsky
Family Business (The Second Family Charon Adventure) by Rod Pennington

5
This is a totally enduring book to read! From page one on to the last I couldn't put it down (read it in less than eight hours)! The characters are captivating and he continually added new ones to the book. Was sorry to have the story end! Entertaining, comical, mysterious and just wonderful to read! Again the author has a contest (but maybe this should be at the beginning of the book instead of the end)! I'm still studying the cover and not understanding how it has anything to do with the story but captivating!

Anne Joyce
Creole Belle by James Lee Burke

5
There is nothing this man writes that I do not love. Burke writes with knowledge and passion for the South he knows and loves and for the fabulously flawed character Dave Robicheaux.

Lani Strom
The Long Walk by Brian Castner

5
Destined to be a classic of the futility of war and PTSD. Beautiful prose and such an incredible sense of what PTSD must feel like.

Tessa B
The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman

4
What fun! 1966 "spy" novel starring an elderly Mrs. Emily Pollifax who offers her services to the CIA when she is bored in retirement and widowhood.

Tessa B
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

I listened to the audio book performed by Carrington MacDuffie. This is a wonderful coming-of-age story about a young girl in Brooklyn, and her family, 1900-1920. A true classic!

Judith Frasca
Into The Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes

5
One of the best books I have read all year. Chilling page turner that keeps you guessing at every page. Very suspenseful!!! This book does not disappoint.

Anne DeRemer
Light a Penny Candle by Maeve Binchy

5
I just read of Ms. Binchy's passing in your newsletter. I happen to be reading this at the time. I have read most all of her books and think she is one of the greatest authors. She will be sadly missed. I'm enjoying this 1st of hers very much. I highly recommend it.

Zara Garcia-Alvarez
I Am Forbidden by Anouk Markovits

4
It is an eloquent and graceful dramatic story, which begs the question of how to remain faithful to God, family, community, and oneself without sacrificing one facet for another. The story is both crisis and redemption in both forms of spirituality and secularism and the burning passion in which they clash and implode. Markovits is a gifted storyteller with an acutely aware and sensitive pen. This is a book that I highly recommend to readers of all faiths inclusive of those who are non-believers for it is more than a story of religious, spiritual dichotomy. It is a beautiful narrative of the capacity and the human condition to assert itself in its desire to approach its relationship to knowledge, love, laws, morality, and its Creator.

Kate Weber
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

2
Eleventy-billion characters and the only truly interesting one is the dwarf. Sure, there were a few decently intertwined stories, but I really only paid attention when it was focused on Tyrion Lannister. His cynicism was refreshing amidst all the obsession over who gets to be king next. I liked this book far more than I’d expected, given that I tend not to favor political intrigue of any genre, but I don’t feel any particular desire to read more of the series.

Martha Humphries
The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson

5
The stories in this book about the great migration of black Americans to the North, West and East away from the Jim Crow South are fascinating. They give us a glimpse into the lives of Americans who gave up the little they had on a chance for a better life. Love this book.

Denee Savage
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

4
It doesn't get any more 'Noir' than this. The author shows that the real demons are inside of us.

Rena Tobey
The Woman at the Light by Joanna Brady

5
Immediately, I was transferred into the character's world. I haven't finished the book yet, but can say I love the sense of traveling back in time when I'm reading.

Amy E. Baldwin
The Roots of the Olive Tree by Courtney Miller Santo

5
Very well written book about five generations of women who live on an Olive orchard in California. A must read. Very insightful on the lives of how women live through time, the family dynamics and love that conquers all no matter what. I could not put this book down. Was so disappointed when I was done!!!

Dr. Judith Glies
The Potter's Field by Andrea Camilleri, Trans. Stephen Sartarelli

4
Funny, snappy dialogue, human characters and a wonderful sense of the nuances of Sicilian culture.

Irene Unger
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

4
A psychological thriller about a married couple that will keep you guessing until the last page. Did she do it? Will he do it? Their twisted love/hate relationship will keep you reading until the very last page. I loved it!

Marcia Burns
The Given Day by Dennis Lehane

4
A very good story --- that's what I look for in a book. Set in Boston, MA at the end of WW1. Historical fiction beginning with Babe Ruth on a train to a game, when it breaks down and he finds a baseball game to join in on, and that begins this long winding, captivating tale. Many themes and relationships are involved and keep the pages turning. Lehane is from Boston so his insights and feelings are genuine --- after all, writing what you know is what a good story is based on. Try it --- you'll like it! Even if you are not from Bean Town.

Jean L
Reliquary by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child

3
This second book in the Agent Pendergast series takes us underground again. It is about the homeless people who live in the tunnels under New York City. If you like a rather unrealistic premise, you'll like this one; plenty of suspense and action.

Carol Poulos
Wallflower in Bloom by Claire Cook

4
A nice, funny and well-written book. This book is perfect for a time you want something light to read.

Jean L
Hit Man (John Keller Mysteries) by Lawrence Block

5
I really liked this book and plan on reading the rest of this series that is told from the hit man's point of view. I found it very interesting and quite unlike any other that I have read because I like this character. Some time back I read "The Very Talented Mr. Ripley" which is nearest to this one that I can think of but I did not like the Ripley character so did not read more of the series.

Marie Ledin
The Cove by Catherine Coulter

5
Great book. Didn't want to put it down. Super FBI mystery, suspense, and romance. Fast moving book and keeps you totally interested and guessing about the ending, which was quite surprising.

Sue Em Davenport
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarity

5
The story of a woman who accompanies a 15 year old Louise Brooks to NYC. The character's arc makes her one of the more interesting heroines in a while.

Amy Cramer
Looking for Alaska by John Green

5
I am 2/3 finished with this book and so far I would give it five stars. My 17 year old son introduced me to John Green and I must admit, I love his writing. John Green knows and writes the way young people think. If every high school non-reader picked up this book, we could convert them all! I will certainly recommend this title to my friends at book club.

Joanne McIntyre
Run by Ann Patchett

4
Read this for f2f book club. Well received by all members and discussion was comprehensive and lively. I had the honor of moderating for this book, formulated several questions and read passages that most touched me. Wonderful characters, who seemed to grow as the book progressed.

Rita Wray
Sunrise Point by Robyn Carr

5
Sunrise Point is another one of Robyn Carr's books set in Virgin River. This is the fifth one I have read and I have enjoyed each one. The characters are connected so they are like a part of a big family with new characters being introduced with each book. I love connected books so I'm having a great time reading them.

Paula Emmert
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

3
I am having a hard time getting into this book. I really don't like the characters. I shall continue in hopes my attitude improves or the book does.

Estelle Wolf
The Wrong Man by David Ellis

5
I can't wait to turn the page. The main character's actions and thoughts are real.

Rosemary Sobczak
XO by Jeffery Deaver

5
WOW!!! This book not only kept me from many projects and needed sleep, when I passed it on to my husband, he (not an avid reader) was similarly hooked!

Jeanette Mateer
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese

4
I am just halfway through this book and finding it difficult to put down. The location is almost a character and the theme is intriguing.

Annette Schmidt
Below Stairs by Margaret Powell

4
A good book that portrays life as a kitchen maid in early 20th century England. A good one to read if you love Downton Abbey as much as I do.

Marian Furukawa
Grave Secrets by Kathy Reichs

4
Tempe Brennan is sent to Guatemala to investigate the remains of victims of mass killings. While there, she uncovers several unidentified bodies of young girls which are involved with stem cell research and the black market. The intrigue keeps you digging into the story until the final climax.

Barbara Linton

Excellent book about track cycling at the Olympics. What does it take both personally and professionally? How it affects your friendships and relationships with others in order to win.

Judy O.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

4
This was an exciting, suspenseful book, but it's not really my genre of reading material, as I had trouble "buying into" the plot. I've heard so much about it that I'm glad I read it, but I don't plan on reading the next two in the series.

Rochelle Stempler
The Fallen Angel by Daniel Silva

5
Love all his books.

Karel Deich
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

5
It was great to read an old favorite. Our book club went to see the movie and in a few weeks we will have a discussion on it.

Annette F. Wood
Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by Anna Quindlen

5
Quindlen's essays are very heart-warming. After reading a few pages, I feel as if I've just spent the afternoon with a good friend.

Michele Aber
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

4
This was one of those books I could just not put down! Gone Girl is a somewhat dark thriller with edgy characters. It kept me guessing all the way to the end. I had mixed feelings about the ending which is why I did not give the book five stars. Well worth reading!

Julie
11/22/63 by Stephen King

5
If you love Stephen King, you'll love this book. I absolutely could not put this book down. You go back to 1963 with the protagonist to see if he can change history and stop the JFK assassination.

Janet P Bedell
Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine, and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard

4
An absolutely great read! I found it engaging, informative, interesting --- all without being preachy! It is amazing how medicine can heal or kill and how presidential biographies can be so interesting. My hat is off to Candice Millard, the author, for writing such a brilliant and thoroughly engaging work.

Blood Trail (Joe Pickett #8) by C. J. Box

3
My favorite Wyoming game warden follows a "Blood Trail" to its heart-breaking end.

Jo Bruccoleri
Maine by J. Courtney Sullivan

4
Maine is the perfect summer book --- it's even set at the beach! It tells the story of three generations of Kelleher women and their lives, dreams and relationships. I'm three-quarters of the way through the book and can't wait to see how it ends, yet at the same time I don't want it to end. I recommend this book.

Kathy Zinecker
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

5
The Age of Miracles was a book I couldn't put down. The story is told through the eyes of a young girl surviving adolescence in the midst of worldwide chaos due to the slowing of the Earth's rotation. This book will make you think about what you would do in this situation, how your life would change and how you would handle it. You'll be thinking about this one long after you finish reading.

The Seven Wonders: A Novel of the Ancient World by Steven Saylor

4
If you enjoyed Saylor’s novels Roma and Empire, then you’ll also enjoy this one. A renowned poet fakes his own death to enjoy the spectacle of his funeral and escapes with his loyal 18-year-old pupil to travel to see the Seven Wonders of the World. At each site they encounter a mystery. With the deduction skills of Sherlock and Watson, the two of them manage to dissect the mystery and solve the crimes. It is a little history, a little myth, and a little murder mystery rolled into one.

B. K.
V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton

4
Another great read from the alphabet mysteries of Sue Grafton. This time she dovetails more than one storyline into an intriguing plot. A rich kid who thinks he’s a poker master; a middle-aged shoplifter; a mobster with a heart; and a bored society wife all mix together with P.I. Kinsey Millhone to sort it all out. Her 1980s stories seem almost quaint now with no cell phones or other modern communications. Now I can’t wait for W! I listened on CD, and the narrator was excellent.

B. K.
Istanbul Passage by Joseph Kanon

4
WW2 has ended and an American working for a tobacco company remains in Istanbul to look after his Jewish wife who has gone mad from what she saw during the war and is a permanent resident in an institution. He can’t afford to take her home to the US, but can he afford to stay in Turkey and be involved in the intrigue of spying and murder and harboring Nazi criminals? He finds himself doing a small favor for someone from the US Consulate…and then another, and another until he is in so deep he doesn’t know how to get out. I have enjoyed all of Kanon’s novels. He has a storytelling gift.

B. K.
A Conflict of Interest by Adam Mitzner

5
A great legal thriller with a little white collar crime, a little murder, and a little revenge thrown in. Alex Miller works for a big NYC firm making tons of money. A securities fraud case falls into his lap when he goes to Florida for his father’s funeral. His father’s best friend needs the help. After that, nothing is as it seems at first. This was one of those books that reminded me of the leading current legal thriller writer. It is Mitzner’s first book, and one I highly recommend. I was especially pleased that he did not rely on profanity, vulgarity, or smut to bring a great story to life that held twists right to the last chapter.

B. K.
Miss Julia Rocks the Cradle by Ann B. Ross

5
Another delightful book in the Miss Julia series. I continue to love every book, and enjoy Miss Julia in the way I enjoy Hyacinth Bouquet on PBS. This time Miss Julia’s home is overcome with the sounds and activities of two brand new baby twin girls. At the same time a mysterious body turns up behind the house of the town scoundrel. Miss Julia and housekeeper Lillian set out to determine the cause of death. I listened on CD. The narrator is excellent and is almost like another character that brings the story to life.

Marion Miller
The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance by Edmund De Waal

4
I give this author lots of credit for his pursuit of his family's netsukes. He travels from England to Japan to Vienna and to Russia to trace his family's history. He is trying to learn more about his legacy, through the Second World War, prior to that and to the present. I loved his descriptions of the netsukes. I could feel them in my hands as he touched them. This is a wonderful history and character study.

Melanie S.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

4
This seemed to be the book everyone was buzzing about all summer, so I decided to read it, not knowing anything about the story at all. I am not a lover of CSI marathons or of the mystery genre, so this book wasn't something I would typically read, so I didn't know what to expect when I started reading. I "read" the first half on audio book in my car and the latter half on my Kindle. I have to say I enjoyed the last third a lot, and was curious to know how it would all wrap up. The ending was a surprise. Not really my cup of tea, but if you like mysteries, you might like this book. The best part for me was the sardonic humor of the two narrators, the husband and wife.

Raylene Wauda
To Heaven and Back: A Doctor's Extraordinary Account of Her Death, Heaven, Angels and Life Again by Dr. Mary C. Neal

4
I'm always intrigued by "near death" experiences, and I think this one is tops.

Marian Collins
Only His (Fool's Gold, Book 6) by Susan Mallery

4
I have enjoyed seeing the Hendrix Triplets get their own story and how they interact in a small town. Her books are fun and a nice quick read.

Lori Edelson
The Fallen Angel by Daniel Silva

5
Daniel Silva can be depended on to deliver consistently great thrillers. This book did not disappoint. I've read and enjoyed the entire Gabriel Allon series. President Clinton said Allon is his favorite fictional character, and I concur. This book not only has an interesting mystery, but it is a fascinating way to learn more about the big issues of today. I highly recommend the book, but I do suggest it is best to read the series in order to fully appreciate the characters.

Frankie
The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty

5
Thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Moriarty's writing brings the reader right in. It was a unique novel and fun to learn more about Louise Brooks in the process. (The book inspired additional research.) Cora's story starts out very believable; however, as her story continues it becomes much less so. Cora's multiple dilemmas make it easier to understand the path that she chooses. It is a reminder that what we most wish for may lead to disappointment, and also that we should never judge others because we do not really know what we would do in a particular situation. Even though I thought the last part of the book was implausible, I still enjoyed reading about Cora and Louise.

Jean
Angelina's Bachelors by Brian O'Reilly

3
This was a Reader's Choice Selection at our local library. It was a sweet story and held my interest. It was fun to watch Angelina heal after her husband's sudden death by cooking for a group of bachelors.

Sandra Furlotte
The Earth Hums in B Flat by Mari Strachan

4
I read this book by Welsh author Mari Strachan for my book club and enjoyed it very much. The book is very much a coming of age story, however the events in the book are not typical of this type of story. The concept of inherited mental illness in a family is not the norm for coming of age story lines.

Sandra Furlotte
Insurgent by Veronica Roth

4
The second book in this trilogy was every bit as good as the first book Divergent. The characters are strong and diverse and the storyline is fantastic. Sometimes the middle book in a trilogy can be a bit lame --- not the case here. I look forward to the final book.

Brady
The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts by Billy Bob Thornton and Kinky Friedman

4
If you like a true rags to riches story this would be the book for you. Billy was a terrible student up to college getting almost failing grades always. He hated school. He didn't prepare in any way for what he came to be...a movie actor and screenplay writer. His innate talent shone through to finally realize a happy life. I have not been a particular fan of his, but now I will pay much more attention to his doings in Hollywood.

Jane Ann Clear
One Mountain Away by Emilie Richards

3
Interesting, just barely holding me. Just not up to what I've come to expect from her, almost half through it may get better.

Caitlyn McCampbell
Divergent by Veronica Roth

5
Best book of the century! This book was exciting and unlike anything anyone has ever written. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something new, unique, and action-packed.

Diane Pollock
Spark: A Sky Chasers Novel by Amy Kathleen Ryan

4
Exciting sequel! Not as intense as the first, but very good job for the mid-book in a trilogy!

Debbie M
Spring Fever by Mary Kay Andrews

3
I felt that this book was better than some of the other books that Mary Kay Andrews has written. The characters and setting are better defined. Of course, the characters and plot follow a Southern literature formula. The ending concerning the waiting for 5 years after the death of the patriarch for the estate to be settled is a little strange. The surprise is bittersweet. I enjoyed the interaction of the family and the fact that no family is perfect, and relatives can surprise us.

Debbie M
Vanish (Jane Rizzoli, Book 5) by Tess Gerritsen

4
As usual, Gerritsen writes an excellent novel. The story flows easily. In this adventure, Jane Rizzoli is ready to have her baby. Of course, Jane cannot just start her maternity leave; she must follow dangerous villains. A hostage situation arises in the hospital and Jane is one of the hostages. Gerritsen skirts in and out of the reason for the hostage situation and the reason for the title of Vanish. The story hits on the topic of vanished women stolen from European countries and sold into slavery in the United States. The story is chilling in that it has been told again and again, and yet this violence continues.

Kathleen Carn
A Dog's Journey by W. Bruce Cameron

4
I always wondered how a dog looks at life. This is a good story looking through a dog's eyes. Sentimental but a very good story.

Renee Booker
Come Home by Lisa Scottoline

5
This novel shows how you can love a child even when you are divorced from the other parent and a step-parent in his or her life. No matter what happened with the father, the mother wanted to keep her relationship with her family and his. You will see how someone tells a child "you can depend on me" and means it.

Kathleen Carn
Wicked Business by Janet Evanovich

4
A funny story about Lizzy the cupcake baker and her supernatural friends and foes. A good read.

Melanie S.
Monkey Mind: A Memoir of Anxiety by Daniel Smith

4
A poignant memoir written by a man who describes his struggle and management of his life-long, ongoing anxiety. I enjoyed this book, which was also humor-filled, as it gave great insight into what one goes through living with chronic anxiety. This was an engaging, funny memoir that I would recommend to anyone who suffers from anxiety or to anyone who knows someone who suffers from anxiety as it gives a clear descriptive picture of what it's like to have to deal with an anxiety disorder on a daily basis.

The Book Lover by Maryann McFadden

4
While this isn't a favorite book I've read recently, it was interesting and worth reading. The Book Lover is the name of an indie book store that Ruth has owned for 30 years. She strikes up a friendship with Lucy, an author who has self-published her first novel. The book gives much insight into the difficulties of finding an agent and then a publisher who will take on a new author. Then it shows the reader the daunting task of marketing one's book. The story involves more than these points with a look into the personal lives of both women and those whom they love, but the information about book publishing was what especially attracted me. I don't aspire to be an author, but have friends who are, so this was fascinating.

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson

3
Larson has compiled from diaries, letters and other written material, the story of the brief Ambassadorship of a mild-mannered professor from Chicago, William Dodd. Dodd was sent to Berlin in 1933 as the rise of Hitler was taking the country by storm. His flamboyant daughter becomes enthralled and involved with many young men so her diaries are valuable in the telling. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked. The President and Cabinet largely did not recognize the grave threat until Berlin and Europe were awash in blood and terror.

The Last Thing I Remember by Andrew Klavan

4
This book is the first in a series by Klavan geared toward the young adult set about a teenaged boy, Charlie West, who goes to bed one night and wakes up tied to a chair and on the run for his life --- and nothing is as it seems. This was a very fast read, kind of reminiscent of the TV show 24 in the fast-paced action that it had. I will definitely be seeking out the rest of the series just to see where it goes.

Craig
Lady Killer by Ed McBain

4
Police are given a note saying a woman will be killed by 8 pm that night and asks what they can do to stop it. With only the note to work with and 1950's-era police methods, can the detectives of the 87th precinct solve this mystery? Fun and clever story.

The Gifted Gabaldon Sisters by Lorraine Lopez

2
Four sisters whose mother died young are left mysterious "gifts" by the family's ancient criada. If it weren’t for the blurb on the back I’m not sure I would have figured out what the gifts were supposed to be. The book’s chapters are narrated by the Gabaldon sisters --- two told in first person, one in third person, and one in second person --- and the story follows the family from 1966 to 1987. The result of the various narrators and different styles is a choppy story line that left me cold. I didn’t connect with any of the characters and had trouble with some of the story lines because years would be skipped from chapter to chapter.Lopez uses a lot of Spanish phrases throughout, frequently without translation or explanation.

11/22/63 by Stephen King

5
I don't give 5 stars very often but this book deserves it. It is a compelling page-turner about going back in time to try to stop the JFK assassination and how the world would have been different if he wasn't shot. It's one of those books that you don't want to end and when it does, you feel like you've lost a good friend. Stephen King is a master of suspense and characterization. I highly recommend this book!

Atonement by Ian McEwan

5
I know I am late to the party in reading this book, but I am so glad that I finally did read this exceptionally crafted novel. McEwan's ability to get into the head of each of his characters is truly amazing. And the issue of how perception and the ramifications of what we perceive can have lasting impact was handled brilliantly. This book has love, despair, war, guilt, atonement --- what more do you want? Read this book.

Interesting historical novel about the lives of women in biblical times.

This book really hit home, as I have lived this book!

Elaine McIntosh
Joy for Beginners by Erica Bauermeister

5
This was an easy, quick, and entertaining read. The main character, Kate, has just beaten cancer and at her congratulations party, her daughter challenges her to go white water rafting. Her friends encourage her to go. She will do this provided that each of them have to do something they are afraid of, the catch being that Kate will decide the challenge. The book then takes up the story of each person's challenge.

Marsha
One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf

5
This book was as good as her other two. During a snow storm, a unknown man goes into a elementary school and takes students and a teacher hostage. It had many wonderful characters and being an intermediate school librarian made it especially interesting, plus the small town feel made it relate to any school. She made you feel the many different people's fears and your own worries of what happens in today's world.

Lynn Hough
The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larson

4
I actually enjoyed this book more than the first one. It didn't start slow like the other. I still don't like the way the characters are always referenced by last name vs. first name, but that is just the way it is written so I have to get past it.

Dawn L Cronk
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

5
Very well written sci-fi/adventure novel! The characters are very vivid, and you really connected with Katniss, Peeta, and the rest of the tributes. I found this book entertaining, page-turning, and extremely challenging, The premise of kids killing kids was difficult to swallow, except you became enamored with the tributes, Haymitch, Effie, Gale and Prim. I enjoyed this book very much and can't wait to start the next book in the series.

Diane Porter
The Virgin Cure by Ami McKay

4
Well-researched and well-written. A story about post Civil War New York and the many homeless and orphaned children. This novel goes into the "business" of raising courtesans for gentlemen of the era --- especially those that had syphilis, etc.

Nancy Black
Force of Nature by C.J. Box

5
A fast paced "can't put it down" novel. This novel has at the heart Nate Romanowski, who was a overseas Special Forces member. He walked away when things went terribly wrong with his section. Joe Pickett, a Wyoming game officer, is one of his best friends and is about to become involved in the upcoming battle. Any novel by C.J. Box is terrific and this one is the best one yet.

Katharine Walczak
Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

5
Great book. Our book club found so much to discuss about this book, from the style of writing to the themes. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Sandy McCullough
Cloudland by Joseph Olshan

3
Not one of my favorites, but the ending was good. I thought I knew who did it, but I was wrong.

Jo Ann Melikian
The Secret Life of Josephine by Carrolly Erickson

5
The author calls this book Historical Entertainment. I loved it. I felt like I was reading Josephine's diary and that I really knew her. I have never read Carrolly Erickson and now I am hooked on her. Just picked up The Tsarina's Daughter!

Louise Droz
Defending Jacob by William Landay

I just can't put this one down!! Characters are so realistic and I love that it is set in Massachusetts!

Enough: Why the World's Poorest Starve in an Age of Plenty by Roger Thurow and Scott Kilman

4
Easy to read, easy to understand. Sometimes I cried, sometimes I cheered, sometimes I raged with anger. Above all, I learned and went to kiva.org and made a microloan to a poor African farmer for seeds and fertilizer. Those of you from a farming background will be particularly moved by this book.

Mary Champagne
A Song for the Asking by Steve Gannon

4
I am from an Irish family of seven children and I grew up in Southern California. I had lots of great summers, and so I could relate well to the characters in this book.

Michael McAdam
Defending Jacob by William Landay

5
This book is RIVETING! After a marginally slow start, it quickly became a page turner. The story is interesting and I am very much enjoying how it is panning out. I hear there is a twist ending (not quite there yet) that is totally unpredictable. I love that so I hope so! I was in the mood for a legal thriller and this is turning out to be quite an engaging and unique one. Highly recommended.

Dorothy Newmark
Doc by Mary Doria Russell

5
In this compelling novel, Mary Doria Russell brings to life the brief and poignant story of Dr. John Henry Holliday. This is not the OK Corral shoot-em-up tale. Rather, it is a thoughtful portrait of some of the major icons of the American West that are part of Doc's life, like the Earp Brothers and Bat Masterson. It made for a wonderful book club discussion.

Deanna Mancuso
Depth of Deception (A Titanic Murder Mystery) by Alexander Galant

5
This was the best mystery I've read this year. So many great characters, an intense and interesting plot, and an ending that left me wanting more.

Susan
The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova

4
The story centers around a psychiatrist and his quest to try and understand why the patient is the way he is. On his journey to discovering this, he is drawn into the patient's life and loves. I love the way this author uses a character to develop her other characters and introduces different story lines that ultimately converge.

Carol
Final Crossing by Carter Wilson

5
Great book!! A real nail-biter!

Linda Johnson
If Books Could Kill by Kate Carlisle

4
A quickly read, hoot of a cozy that takes place at a book fair in London. Humorous and a bit of chick-lit, but a good palate cleanser after reading something heavy that took a long time. Brooklyn Wainwright is to bookbinding as Jessica Fletcher was to Cabot Cove: wherever she goes someone (or some two) gets murdered. Unlike Jessica Fletcher, Brooklyn is always the prime suspect. Jessica Fletcher had Sheriff Amos Tupper. Brooklyn has Derek Stone, a former Inspector with Scotland Yard who, now that this is the second book in the series, knows that Brooklyn is not the prime suspect and works to find the true culprit. (Second book in the series.)

Liz Goldstein
The Invisible Mountain by Carolina de Robertis

5
A beautifully written book about three generations of strong women in Uruguay. Their lives and experiences illuminate the history of that small Latin American country.

Eileen Gosselin
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
Unusual story about a circus of dreams as well as a competition. Makes one stop and think along the way. Not your average summer read. You will either love it or hate it.

Kathy
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

5
A wonderful coming of age novel with a science fiction twist. Terrific character and plot development. Wonderful showing of the resilience of the human population. I couldn't put it down!

Veronica Earley
Heading Out to Wonderful by Robert Goolrick

5
I liked this novel. I found the character Charlie Beale very interesting. I liked his secrecy.

Brenda Whiting
Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie

5
Mr. Massie has the ability to engage the reader and cause them to forget that they are reading nonfiction. He has brought Catherine and the Russian court to life in a way that I've not seen another biographer/historian do. I am anxious to begin reading his other works about Peter the Great and the Romanovs. He has gained a place as one of my favorite authors.

Michele Cmelo
The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks

5
For some reason, I just re-read this book even though I have many times. It is such a great book that it bears repeating, and I was thrilled to see it come out in paperback.

Lynn Demsky
The Fourth Awakening by Rod Pennington and Jeffery A. Martin

1
I found this book boring and nothing but a self-help type book imbedded in a not very believable fiction book! I was delighted when I finished wading though it and proud of myself for finishing it; good for putting you to sleep!

Lynn Demsky
The Gathering Darkness by Rod Pennington and Jeffery A. Martin

1
This was a totally disappointing story, worse than the first one in the series! Again a bunch of self-help type stuff imbedded in a fiction book, took me 2 1/2 days to wade through it, not very believable and I kept falling asleep through it! Super ugh and was NOT worth the $0.99 I wasted on it! I will read more of his Charon Family Adventures but NO more of these!

Jan Hummel
Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer

5
I found this book in a box of books in the attic, and before I took it over to the Friends of The Library, I decided to read it, not expecting too much. Wow...was I surprised. It was engrossing, with rich characters and a wonderful story. Two men from two different worlds are entwined in many different ways. I enjoyed it so much and will look for more of Archer's books as he is a great storyteller.

Stacey Kehrer
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

5
Great book! So exciting the entire way through. Kept me on the edge of my seat and I had already seen the movie. Can't wait to read the next one!

Come Home by Lisa Scottoline

5
LOVED this book! I knew I would because I’ve loved every book of hers that I have read. Her story lines are never slow, and her character development immerses you into their lives. This was a great read and I highly recommend it.

Mary Lebel
The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian

5
A historical fiction account of love, war and survival during Armenian massacres around 1915. A very gripping, action-filled book.

Laurie Oberman
The Red Book by Deborah Copaken Kogan

4
This is an engaging read about 4 former female Harvard roommates who return for their 20th college reunion. While they've kept up with each other and their classmates over the years through the Red Book, a compilation of written updates about their lives, their reunion points out that their lives have taken numerous twists and turns not readily apparent in the glossy Red Book summaries. Life has hit each with unexpected developments and though the plot is somewhat predictable, the writing style is engrossing and highly effective. This is a good read about all the dreams of unsuspecting youth and what happens as real life intervenes. I highly recommend it.

Bobbie Davis
The Forgetting Tree by Tatjana Soli

2
Started well and I really became interested in Claire and how she survived loss, illness, etc. The story of the caretaker, instead of being a flashback as the story progressed, suddenly interrupted the story of Claire 3/4 of the way through. We know that Soli is a bit strange but the story became just too bizarre. Liked it a lot until the flashback began!

Marsha
Night Watch by Linda Fairstein

5
When it comes to suspense novels, Linda Fairstein is the top writer. Her books featuring Alexandra Cooper, sex-crimes prosecutor, are always fascinating. This one deals with opening a fine restaurant and all the problems involved. Her romance with her lover, Luc, is always interesting. Scandal, secrets, murder, violence and treachery are themes that are woven deftly throughout the novel.

Lori
City of Women by David Gillham

3
This book kept my attention, but it was yet another book about home life in Germany during WWII, and I'm not sure how realistically it portrayed events of the time period. The characters weren't particularly likeable or believable to me, but the story had lots of twists and turns.

Linda H
Back of Beyond by C. J. Box

The Operative by Andrew Britton

A great book involving Ryan Kealey, former CIA operative who is now working directly for the President. This one involves the use of brainwashing. I was so sorry to hear of the death of Andrew Britton. His books will be missed.

Temptation Ridge by Robyn Carr

5
Books by Robyn Carr are always good. Virgin River is a town where most of us would like to live. This book is about an ex-Army helicopter pilot who has come to renovate some cabins. He doesn’t plan on staying until he meets the niece of a retired Army general. But with Shelby, Luke has met his match. A great heartwarming story.

That Holiday Feeling: Silver Bells/The Perfect Holiday/Under the Christmas Tree by Debbie Macomber, Sherryl Woods, & Robyn Carr

4
Each writer contributed a short story centering around the Christmas season. Each story is heartwarming and easy to read.

Ivy Pittman
The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson

5
An absolutely amazing story about a man who refuses to celebrate his 100th birthday in a nursing home without liquor. He climbs out the window and starts down a path riddled with one domino effect after another, making friends along the way, each of whom comes with their own bag of drama, crime, and other ill-reputable characteristics. It is a ride of lifetime for an old guy who has already lived through a life many can only imagine. Engaging on every level.

Lorna
Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L .James

4
So much more than I expected. The reader is taken into the lives of Mr. Grey and Ms. Steele. This is so much more than the sex lives of 2 consenting adults. Yes, is it quite graphic, but it brings you to understand the characters. Can't wait to get started on the next installment.

Judy Dorton
The Inn at Rose Harbor by Debbie Macomber

I love anything she writes and would love to have this to add to my collection.

Where We Belong by Emily Giffin

4
Marian Caldwell is a thirty-six year old woman living in New York City with a lifestyle many would envy. She is a television producer for a popular TV show, dating her handsome boss, but she is hiding a secret she has kept buried for years. One night she receives a visitor; her 18 year old daughter arrives on her doorstep, and her life changes from that moment on. The story is told in alternate voices of Marian and her daughter Kirby. As you turn each page another layer unfolds, making the characters strong and believable. Each is on a quest to find the missing something in her life. Great read!

Laura Beierbach
A Hundred Flowers by Gail Tsukiyama

A passionate story, enjoy.

Diane Porter
When in Doubt, Add Butter by Beth Harbison

4
Although this seems like chick lit, the topics covered are deeper and interesting. Characters are fleshed out, and even the "Cinderella ending" holds up well. I highly recommend this as a summer read that is likely to get you thinking.

Janet Estridge
Hiking Through by Paul Stutzman

5
"Hiking Through" is the true story of one man's journey to peace and freedom on the Appalachian Trail. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I will never be able to hike the AT but I can do so through this book and never have to leave my house. I am recommending this book to everyone I know.

Ruth Underwood
The Shoemaker's Wife by Adriani Trigiani

5
Triagini is an outstanding author...I've read all of her books and this latest one is truly as good as, or better than all of the rest...her research is in depth and her description of the country of Italy would make you think she was born there. A "five-star" book!!!

Lynn Demsky
Last Chance Beauty Queen by Hope Ramsay

5
What an entertaining read! From the first page on I just had fun with a cast of unique characters, antics and just plain weird persons! It brought all the advantages of living and being raised in an itty bitty town to make for a more then interesting family! Only took me a day to read and was really a GREAT SUMMER READ! It's a "make me happy person" book! Have to go get more of this series!

Mary Bryant
In The Woods by Tana French

4
Very detailed and suspenseful mystery that takes place in the outskirts of Dublin. The author keeps you guessing about two murders that appeared to be connected and some 20 years apart. A great read.

Wendy Catalano
Guarding Jess by Shannon Curtis

4
Better Than Warm Milk!!! Jessica Pennington, a prim and proper etiquette consultant, is being stalked and Noah Samuels is hired to be her bodyguard. As the story progresses so do the threats that become quite dangerous and so does the attraction between Noah and Jessica. "Guarding Jess" was a entertaining romantic suspense novel that was fun and a quick read. I look forward to reading more of Shannon Curtis's work.

Lee Cobb
The Line Between Here and Gone by Andrea Kane

4
Was Paul Everett a charismatic businessman, or a manipulator in over his head? If his involvement with a tycoon and a congressman were legitimate, why was he on the FBI's radar, and why did the local police believe he was murdered? The life of his infant son depends on finding Paul Everett alive, and finding him fast! You'll definitely feel the clock ticking as you turn the pages of this compelling story of secrets and lies.

The Sweetness of Forgetting by Kristin Harmel

Rose's memory is ebbing rapidly due to the onset of Alzheimer's, and she knows she doesn't have much time left to tell her granddaughter the truth about a secret she's kept for seventy years. Giving Hope nothing but a list of names, Rose sends her on a journey of discovery that takes Hope to a synagogue and a mosque in Paris, to a history forged in the Holocaust, and the story of a love long thought buried. I loved this book!!!

Sharron
Secrets of Eden by Chris Bohjalian

3
Predictable "mystery" or who-dunit. Battered wife ends up dead beside her dead husband. Was it a murder/suicide or a double murder or did Alice's lover kill her husband? Told from different points of view.

Ratlines by Stuart Neville

4
I’ve just finished reading an advanced copy of Stuart Neville’s Ratlines. This is the first of his novels I have read, and I enjoyed it immensely. I was very surprised to find out about some of Ireland’s immigrants after WWII …so this is one of the many governments that accepted some of the worst of the world as they fled seeking shelter after the commission of their atrocities! Interesting how protagonist Ryan’s behavior brutally blends in while helping to bring about some justice, and how, yet again, guilty parties may not be prosecuted. Very exciting read.

Laura Hilger
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

5
Book club selection. I had no idea when this book was selected how popular this book was becoming!

Bobbie Mohney
Return to Grace by Karen Harper

5
I live in Amish Country so this book caught my attention right away. It is interesting to read the story and learn what happens when an Amish girl decides to leave her culture and then has to return because of conditions out of her control. The book has a lot of twists and turns in it with murders and disappearances and it is interesting to see how the author ties the common folk and the Amish together and how they will work together to solve the mysteries that they have embarked upon.

Kaylynn S
A Summer in Europe by Marilyn Brant

2
There's lots to enjoy in this book. The problem was that for 30-year-olds and above, these characters acted like juveniles.

Linda Johnson
Wonder by R. J. Palacio

5
WONDERFUL (pun intended) story of a fifth grader born with a myriad of facial deformities including a cleft palate. His mother decides, after years of homeschooling, that Auggie should go to school. His loving parents find a small private school that seems to meet Auggie's and their needs. This was meant to be a YA book, but I know many adults who have rated it highly. Palacio tugged at my heart so often during this book. I was never fully prepared for my emotional roller coaster from how I personally related to so much in this book. I think this should be a must read for all.

Peter Wentworth
Mirror's Fathom by Sheridan Hough

5
This is a intellectual person's page turner - based on speculative anecdotes surrounding the Danish Philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, his niece, an alleged pirate and an antiques dealer. A delightfully breezy read from an acclaimed Kierkegaard Scholar.

Susan Schleicher
The Healer of Fox Hollow by Joann Rose Leonard

5
I loved this book from the very first page. Beautiful writing and such a fabulous story.

Linda Bentzen
Live by Night by Dennis Lehane

4
LIVE BY NIGHT by Dennis Lehane is a suspense/thriller story that I enjoyed. As a suspense/thriller fan, it was fun to read a story quite different from most stories I’ve read. I feel the writing is good and the characters are well defined. This book would appeal to mystery readers as well as those who enjoy suspense. Book clubs could find many areas to discuss from gangsters and their morality to knowing how to love the right person. I would not call it a Young Adult story even though the protagonist is in his late teens. It can make you smile occasionally, but is basically a serious story with serious questions. Who will get killed? Who will not get killed? Who is trustworthy, if anyone? I appreciate the chance to read this book.

Sharon Hughson
One Mountain Away by Emilie Richards

Phyllis Gronewold
Wife 22 by Melanie Gideon

5
i loved reading Wife 22. It was a fast reading book mixing technology with a good story line. Loved the romantic storyline.

Kellie
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

3
This wasn't as good as the other 2. I felt cheated as a reader on a few things. Number 1) the love triangle fizzled out and I thought I was left hanging at the end. 2) I was looking for more of a dramatic ending which didn't happen. After all I went through as a reader, I was hoping for more closure and it didn't happen for me. 3) The ending did not come full circle. I thought it ended too quickly. I really enjoyed the series but this last book took away from it's impact on me.

The Red House Country Recipes by Charmaine T. Davis

5
A most entertaining, enlightening, comical read! Amazing they all made it and reminded me of our old cottage way back in the 50's - no plumbing, no running water, no electricity! Difficult to believe that people lived like that in the 1980’s! Was sorry when it ended! A really good read and am looking forward to finding more by Charmaine T. Davis!

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

5
Without a doubt, one of the most deserving books of the title as a "classic". While many other books written around the time period fail to capture my interest, this novel is one of the few exceptions. Not only is the story about the American Dream, but it's about so much more. While many of the characters are dishonorable and reckless, I can't help but admire Gatsby (despite him being less-than-innocent himself). All I can say is, definitely one of the top 10 books ever written. Period.

Elizabeth - Silver's Reviews
The Roots of The Olive Tree by Courtney Miller Santo

5
Olives, Olive Oil, longevity...sounds like it could be true to me. The Keller women had worked in the olive orchards for generations, and Anna, who was 112, claimed the longevity was because of the family's "love" of the olives...this book is filled with generations of women and family life. What a magnificent book with a powerful, thoughtful ending.

Elizabeth - Silver's Reviews
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

5
The adjective, MARVELOUS, on the ARC's book cover undeniably describes this book. Additional adjectives such as SPECTACULAR and SPLENDID would also be revealing terms. The author made this mundane topic of a 500-mile walk to see a friend not mundane at all. Ms. Joyce had beautiful descriptions of landscapes, feelings, conversations, and thoughts about friendship and family. She drew you right into the book from page one. You will find that this read is very profound and thought-provoking. Nothing but praise for this remarkable book ... the characters and the storyline are exceptional.

Nikki Youngren
The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian

4
I love books like this with a wonderful story based on historical facts. Those historical facts are dry and unrelated to me when read in a history book but in novel form they become something that I can experience and feel along with the characters. As with the book "Sarah's Key", I learned of very sad times in the world's history where society ignored the atrocities that one race committed against another. The story is depressing at times but also encouraging showing the resilience of the human spirit. I highly recommend this book.

Nikki Youngren
Shine Shine Shine by Lydia Netzer

2
I must be strange or something because I can't figure out what was so great about this book. I had to force myself to finish it thinking that it would get better based on the reviews. Parts of the story would grab my attention but then the main character would do something strange & wires and the book would lose me again. I would only recommend this book if you have nothing else in your "to be read" pile.

Lori
Minding Frankie by Maeve Binchy

4
I listened to the audio version of this book and found it a pleasant "read". The narrator wasn't the best (mostly due to a terrible American accent for one of the characters), but the book was typical of the late Maeve Binchy and was very enjoyable. A lot of characters from previous books appeared in this one, and I liked that. I'm sorry that Maeve is gone and we won't be hearing more about them (unless there's a book in progress).

Running For My Life: One Lost Boy's Journey from the Killing Fields of Sudan to the Olympic Games by Lopez Lomong and Mark Tabb

5
This is an amazing true story of the life of Lopez Lomong who was kidnapped by rebel soldiers during church services in his home village of South Sudan, his escape to a refugee camp in Kenya, to his new life in the USA. I loved this book. It made me love my country of America more. It redefines what is possible, if we are willing to work hard than nothing stands in the way of reaching our dreams. I can't recommend it enough.

Elaine Campbell
The Abbey by Chris Culver

3
This is a good, fast paced thriller featuring Detective Ash Rashid. The plot might have had more development, but it is enjoyable.

Joan Chance
Dreams of Joy by Lisa See

5
A rare glimpse into communist China, horrifying but probably true of the 60's. This is the continuing story of Pearl, May and Joy from See's book, Shangai Girls, and others. An excellent view of the mother/daughter relationship and how it can change. I do think the novel can stand alone for first time "Lisa See" readers.

Joan Chance
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

5
I enjoyed this book on many levels. Flynn is a readable treat as she vividly paints pictures of the characters and story line. She does not write in cliches or beneath our reading abilities. By that I mean Flynn is an accomplished, literate writer with an imagination that grips us and keeps us reading into the night. Gone Girl is confounding, mysterious, sometimes funny and just a darn good read. I'd not read anything by Flynn before but for sure will now.

Suzanne Gonneville
Midnight in Peking by Paul French

4
The book takes the reader into the deteriorating city of Peking before the devastation of Japanese occupation and WWII. A mutilated body of a young English woman is found without any clues nor motive. An investigation develops and it is critical to both the Chinese and British to solve the case as soon as possible. With many convoluted circumstances the case is closed. The girl’s father decides to mount an investigation. This story is very suspenseful and sometimes downright scary. Peking’s history at that time tells us a tale of unbelievable decay.

Suzanne Gonneville
Not in the Heart by Chris Fabry

This is a captivating story. Truman Wiley is a down-and-out worldwide reporter who not only is destitute, but alienated from his wife and two children. He agrees to write a book about a death row inmate charged of murder in exchange for the accused’s heart upon execution. Truman feels he can gain restitution by trading the book for the heart for his dying son. The twists and turns of the continuing story is engrossing enough to keep interest until the surprising ending. Chris Fabry’s writing is inspiring.
