This contest period's winners will receive 11/22/63 by Stephen King, KILL ALEX CROSS by James Patterson and THE SISTERS by Nancy Jensen.

Anita Nowak
Strangers At the Feast by Jennifer Vanderbes

5
This was a wonderful book that takes place on Thanksgiving Day - When Ginny's oven doesn't work, the Olsen family must move the festivities to her brother Douglas' house - that's when strange things start to happen. Though the family has problems, they come together when things go wrong. I had never heard of this author, but purchased this book at a library sale, and it was worth reading. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Vanderbes' work.

Dianne
The Gates by John Connelly

4
Good read for the Halloween period. A young boy and his dog suspect an evil energy force has invaded his neighbor's bodies and plan to open the gates to hell on All Saints Day. This is a fun read.

Michelle Archer
The Language of Flowers by Vannessa Diffenbaugh

5
This was a really great book. A touching story about an abandoned girl coming out of the foster care system. The chapters alternate between the girl's current story and her past to give readers a full understanding of how she came to be. Will Victoria's understanding of the Victorian meanings of flowers ultimately save her?

Michelle Archer
The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan

5
The second title in the new Heroes of Olympus series returns to everyone's favorite - Percy Jackson. Percy and his new friends are just irresistible. Riordan's clever blending of Greek myth and modern day America is entertaining even for adults.

W. Tina Chase
Mini Shopoholic by Sophie Kinsella

4
I just love the Shopaholic books when I am looking for something a little lighter to read. They are a nice read, with a good combination of quirky, humorous and sometimes even touching storylines. Mini Shopoholic is the 4th book I've read in the series, and they never disappoint. Sophie Kinsella just seems to write in a style that makes the characters feel real and you can't wait to find out what happens next.

Crystal
Green Housekeeping by Ellen Sandbeck

3
Contains useful information. The edition I read was a 2008 trade paperback of copyright 2006 material. It could definitely use an update.

Crystal
As The Pig Turns: An Agatha Raisin Mystery by M.C. Beaton

5
The latest Agatha Raisin is wonderful! It's a great mystery that made me laugh out loud a few times.

Elaine Beierbach
Kill Alex Cross by James Patterson

4
I thinks James is getting a little sloppy with his stories - pumping them out too fast, but I am a follower of the doctor.

Stephanie Ward
The Strain by Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan

4
The first in a trilogy, "The Strain" is a modern update to a classic vampire tale. The book is easy to read and flows well. There is a good mix of vampire lore, technology, science, and mystery to keep the reader turning pages. This book would make a great movie!

Bonnie Gluhanich
You Are Not A Stranger Here by Adam Haslett

4
These short stories are the kind that you read, put down the book and think about the story and characters for a long time afterward. Very compelling.

Dreams of Joy by Lisa See

5
This book was fascinating. It is the sequel to Shanghai Girls. I wish I knew that before I read it because I have not read Shanghai Girls. So, I’m going to read them out of order. Oh well. This book takes place during the Great Leap Forward in China. There is so much in here. History of China. Communism. Family relationships. Art. It’s all in here. Plus, the author takes a character, Joy, who is young and very confused and influenced by her roots and the pull to find her father and become a part of the new China. Once there, she thinks she is happy and can fit right into the community and political atmosphere that has taken over the country. She falls in love and is so caught up in the moment, she loses her perspective. The History aspect of this novel is also amazing. China has so much mystery in it’s past. I became so caught up in the history, it made me appreciate my heritage and freedom. It also scared me a little to think bit, by bit we are starting to let our government take more control and our freedom is being eroded at the same pace. I was very apprehensive towards the end of this book. I was so worried I was not going to be happy with the ending. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoy this author and I’m so glad I stumbled upon this book. It is not one I will forget.

Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend by Susan Orlean

4
Wonderful!

Teresa
So Brave, Young and Handsome by Leif Enger

2
Loved his book, Peace Like a River, and thought I would like this. I grew impatient with the narrator, Monte Beckett, and wished he would just grow a backbone. It did slowly grow on me, but thankfully it's less than 300 pages.

Teresa
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton

5
Really loved it! Very gothic with lots of mysteries and twists and turns.

Teresa
Milk and Honey: A Decker/Lazarus Novel by Faye Kellerman

4
Fun, easy read.

Rena Tobey
The Buddha in the Attic by Julia Otsuka

4
Intriguingly written in 1st person plural, sociological, but strangely moving, too. I've never read anything quite like it--a kind of tone poem, historical treatise of Japanese mail order brides. Unforgettable.

Wendy Catalano
Tell It To The Trees by Anita Rau Badami

4
This is the story of a murder (in the 1st chapter), family secrets and domestic abuse all within the Dharma family who had immigrated from India to a small isolated town in Northern B.C. I found it hard to close this book once I had started. The subject matter is very disturbing, yet the story grabs you. The characters were well-developed and I found that either my heart was breaking for them, I was terrified for them or I loathed them. This has to be one of the best portrayal's of the effects of domestic abuse that I have ever read. The title was perfect!

This is a really good book.

Saundra McKenzie
A Sound Among the Trees by Susan Meissner

I am half done, and cannot put it down. Great book.

Inside of a Dog by Alexandra Horowitz

4
Delightful look into the canine mind. If you own a dog, you should definitely pick this one up. If you don't own a dog, what are you waiting for?!

CHERYL STILLWELL
KILL ALEX CROSS by JAMES PATTERNSON

5
THANKS FOR THE GIVE AWAY!

Ron Rosebrough
Wonkenstein: the Creature From My Closet by Obert Skye

5
Robert Burnside is a twelve year old with a problem. No, besides the funny name, or his goofy younger brother, or his older sister, or his parents. That's just the normal stuff. He also has a funny little creature that came out of his closet. True, it almost popped out of the overstuffed closet where Robert throws everything. The problem is Robert doesn't know what it is or what to do with it. It looks like something Dr. Frankenstein might have made in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Worst of all, it won't go back into the closet and it seems to keep getting Robert in trouble. The book is easy to read with lots of cool illustrations to help with the laughs.

Pat S.
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory

5
A friend loaned me 4 books by Gregory - had never read any of hers thus far. Even though this is a long book, it is extremely interesting - can't wait to read the other 3 she loaned me. Highly recommend this book.

Laurie H
Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor and Barbara Taylor Bradford

4
I'm sure when it was written it was viewed as much more scandalous than it reads today. I did think her telling about the plague was really interesting. It's a long book, over 900 pages and definitely not a bit boring. Amber can be incredibly dense and annoying at times.

Dianna D
The Love of My Youth by Mary Gordon

3
3 1/2 This story is about two complicated, very intelligent teenagers who become lovers. Their relationship lasts through college and then ends very badly. The story begins when they are 60 years old and agree to see each other the first time since their relationship concludes. Along with their sometimes humorous exchanges, you are also enjoying the sites of Rome.

Janet Kent
The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen

5
Set in Denmark, this police procedural/thriller combines cold case investigation, departmental politics and an investigator who wants no part of either. Carl and his assistant, Assad, reopens the case of missing and presumed dead politico and refuses to give up no matter whose toes are trampled. In fact, Carl enjoys seeing the bigwhigs dance to get out of his way. Lovely translation makes for an unforgettable read.

Marsha
In Harm's Way by Ridley Pearson

BJ Simon

Great story about a Russian ballerina.

DEWEY: THE SMALL-TOWN LIBRARY CAT WHO TOUCHED THE WORLD by Vicki Myron, Bret Witter (Contributor)

5
DEWEY: THE SMALL-TOWN LIBRARY CAT WHO TOUCHED THE WORLD by Vicki Myron, Bret Witter (Contributor), was published in 2008. Obviously, I didn’t read it right away. That’s because I was afraid it would be a tear jerker. But the cover picture of that cat finally proved irresistible when I found the book at a used book sale. I read it, and I loved it. If you like cats, you’ll love this book, too. And there’s enough description of library work that librarians would also enjoy this book, regardless of how they feel about cats. But a librarian who is also a cat owner absolutely should not miss DEWEY. Some of DEWEY is funny, all of it is touching. But it’s more than a MARLEY-type book, with descriptions of crazy incidents. DEWEY begins with a book depository. That’s where Vicki Myron, the director of the Spencer, Iowa Library, finds the 8-week-old kitten one freezing cold morning. He was near frozen to death, and his paws were frostbitten. But he loved her and everyone else who would hold him immediately. And all the librarians there loved him back. So, of course, they kept him. And now you might expect the remainder of the book to describe cat antics. But Myron actually tells us how Dewey helped so many people on a daily basis, truly helped them. Sure, cat antics are in there, but they’re part of the stories of a cat who loved everyone and helped the lives of so many. I highly recommend this book. It’s just as good today as it was in 2008 when it was getting so much publicity.

Elizabeth V
THE SLEEPWALKERS by Paul Grossman

5
Sometimes I just can’t wait to blurt it out: THE SLEEPWALKERS by Paul Grossman is an outstanding thriller. Like Joseph Kanon’s books, this is excellent historical fiction as well. The setting is 1932 Berlin. The body of a young woman has washed to shore. Willi, a Jewish police detective and former World War I hero, famous already for solving another huge case, is called to the scene. He notes that she was beautiful. But her legs are horribly deformed, almost as if they are backward. And her hair has been shaved. She is also missing both wisdom teeth, indicating she was probably American. She’s dubbed “the mermaid.” Before he has a chance to get anywhere with this case, Willi is given another, higher profile assignment—to find the missing princess of Bulgaria, who had been visiting Berlin with her husband. According to the doorman at the hotel she walked out of, she looked like a sleepwalker. Willi’s subsequent investigation finds many more missing persons cases involving sleepwalkers. I highly recommend THE SLEEPWALKERS.

Mary Rodriguez
Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks

4
Nicholas Sparks fans will enjoy another good read.

Marjorie
Don't Scream by Wendy Corsi Staub

5
If you want a mystery book like no other, check out Don't Scream. Wow, what a mystery and a who done it. Excellent, I highly recommend it. Scared to Death, is also an excellent read, another 5 star book from WCS.

Joan B.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
The Night Circus is an amazing debut book. This book is not for everyone. Warning! You must have an open mind and a vivid imagination. As I was reading this book it played out like a movie in my mind. As quoted, it is a feast for the senses.

Joan B.
Sins of the Mother by Tara Hyland

4
This book spans England and Ireland during war time, telling the story of Franny Healey, a young Irish girl who dreams of a better life in another country. Leaving her young daughter behind, she heads off to America, where her life begins to unravel over the years. Back in Ireland her young daughter Cara grows up not feeling loved, and not trusting. She ends up in an orphanage after the death of her Gran, but her strength to survive prevails and she begins on a journey to find the mother who left her behind.

Francisca E B
Light From Heaven by Jan Karon

3
The last book in the 9-book Mitford series. Father Tim and Cynthia are spending the year at Meadowgate Farm. He's also taken on being Vicar of Holy Trinity - a mountain church that's been closed for 40 years. And, they've taken Sammy Barlow in. Only Kenny is still missing. 3*

Connie Fischer
Waking Up With The Duke by Lorraine Heath

5
I enjoyed this book immensely. The characters were believable which can be hard to find in some romance novels. The heroine, Jayne, is married to a man who is paralyzed. However, she wants a child. Enter her husband's cousin who has always secretly desired her. From there, we follow a pact that will lead from passion to sadness to finally love. A wonderfully written novel that I would highly recommend.

Connie Fischer
The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin

4
I was truly intrigued by the synopsis of this novel long before it was published. Therefore, it was with great anticipation when I started reading it. I can say that it was hard to put down. What is portrayed in this book is the story of a rich American girl who had been raised to marry a man with a European title. This was not unusual as many American heiresses were doing the same thing. Usually, these men had titles but their family coffers were empty and thus they needed the dowries brought by these young women. We follow Cora as she learns to accept this type of marriage as her fate and we see how strong she is as she matures. The events that follow are well written. Although the ending might not be what the reader would like, one does realize that indeed this is what she "signed up for" and she does not disappoint.

Connie Fischer
Then Came You by Jennifer Weiner

4
Jennifer Weiner never fails to write a book that wraps you up and doesn't let go. Our heroine is a money-strapped college student when she decides to sell her eggs to help with her expenses. We then follow the way her donation is used and all of the people whose lives are affected. The story goes from character to character each chapter which can be confusing unless the reader is totally engrossed in the novel. To pick it up and put it down often can add to that confusion. I would advise someone to dedicate themselves to reading it. In the end, we find that it truly does take a village to raise a child. I enjoyed reading this book very much.

Connie Fischer
Confetti Confidential by Holly McQueen

4
This was a really cute book that grabbed my attention from the first page. It's chock full of really interesting characters that the author wove together perfectly. The heroine's hard work at becoming a wedding planner was at times painful, embarrassing, and funny. Working on her own love life keeps the reader guessing all the way to the end of the book as to which man she would choose. A wonderful read that makes one wonder why we go to all the trouble that we do in planning a wedding when elopement is so much simpler.

Connie Fischer
Crowded Marriage by Catherine Alliott

4
I enjoyed reading this book and it really kept my attention. I did not want to put it down. Some funny and some sad situations all worked together to make the reader feel a strong empathy for the heroine. I love British chick-lit and this is one I would put at the top of my list.

Tessa B
The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister

3
Lillian is a talented chef and restaurant owner who holds a cooking class each month. Participation is limited to eight students and their stories are told in each chapter as the lessons unfold. The writing in this slim volume is rich and sensual, but overly reliant on simile. Still, the descriptions of the food made me hungry for more and I enjoyed this indulgent treat (though I wouldn’t want a steady diet of it).

John Kwok
Zone One by Colson Whitehead

1
Where Colson Whitehead sees zombies, I see instead, The Borg or Daleks. Strongly recommend skipping Whitehead's latest novel, "Zone One", an exercise in breathtaking inanity, and instead, read Michael Swanwick's "Dancing with Bears", or Kathleen Ann Goonan's "In War Times" and "This Shared Dream", both edited by legendary science fiction editor David G. Hartwell. These offer far better prose, far more engaging characters, and far more intriguing ideas than what Whitehead has wrought in his latest novel. What Whitehead has written is more a pale imitation of Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" than an inspired work of fictional social commentary.

Richard B
18 Best Stories by Edgar Allan Poe

4
Classic Short Stories of murder, mayhem, horror.

Jean L
The Sleepwalkers by Paul Grossman

5
This is a really good book. It is set in the early 1930s in Berlin. We all know how events turned out for this time and place but this is a good page-turner that will keep your interest. Good believable characters that you will like (not including the nazis). There is another book coming which features the same main character and I intend to read it.

Dennis Beierbach
Kill Alex Cross by James Patterson

4
His plots are getting weak, but I like Alex.

Jean L
Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay

This book is definitely different. I enjoyed reading it, but believe that I will not read the rest of the series, as this is but the first.

John Dallal
The Man In The Rockefeller Suit: The Astonishing Rise and Spectacular Fall of a Serial Imposter by Mark Seal

5
I find this book to be very interesting as quite a vivid portrait of a man who was a great manipulator of peoples feelings - luring them in to his world - a world built on lies and betrayal.

Bobbie Jedlicka
A Night Too Dark by Dana Stabenow

5
I am currently reading “A Night Too Dark” by Dana Stabenow. It is one in the series about Kate Shugak, a native Alaskan P.I. in Alaska. The descriptions of Alaska, the hardship and rewards of living in the unforgiving wilderness, as well as the character development are outstanding. Stabenow, who lives in Alaska, has done her research.

Jill Porco
The Mill River Recluse by Darcie Chan

4
This is a mystery-cum-small town story that revolves around the death of one woman, a long-time recluse, and of how her secrets, once revealed, affect the town. A juicy, gripping read. It was on sale for $.99 for the Kindle in October, so I couldn't resist!

The book kept my interest with the twists and turns. Was disappointed with the ending. Still a fan though.

Ann Burch
Spinning Forward by Terri DuLong

5
The first book in a series of stories located in Cedar Key, Florida, a favorite spot for me and so many others. Terri spins the story, with characters from the locals to those transplanted, to visitors to the island and keeps you wondering what will happen next as the story unfolds; she uses actual places and businesses around the island which makes for even more interesting reading. I can't wait to read the next two books: "Casting About," and "Sunrise on Cedar Key."

NANCY HOLLIS
The King of Lies by John Hart

5
First book I've read by him - will be searching for his former titles. Out of the ordinary and compelling.

Judith Marshall
The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason

4
I found the author's writing to be the best part of this highly unusual story.

Geneva Saville
Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love by Larry Levin

5
Heart-warming story of a rescued pit bull and the family who rescued him. Great insight into the personality of pit bulls and the fact that even though he was tortured beyond belief, Oogy's wonderful nature and loyalty shows that pit bulls make wonderful family members.

Gail Spitzer
Ellis Island by Kate Kerrigan

5
In order to survive, Ellie leaves her home in Ireland during the 1920's and travels to New York, leaving her husband behind. This is a very good book.

MsAnnie9181
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

4
This could have been a 4 1/2 star book with a better ending, as it is, it's a Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell lite. I liked it very much, though and think it may, if exposed correctly, give the Harry Potter fans (especially the older than 12-year-old's) something to read.

julie
Brainrush by Richard Bard

4
This is the story of Jake a terminally ill combat pilot who emerges from an MRI with extraordinary mental powers. Everyone wants a piece of his talent including one of the world's most dangerous terrorists. It's a real page-turner. I haven't finished it yet, but can't wait to see how it all turns out.

Susan simon

Captivating story told from the eyes of a 5 year old boy named Jack. Jack has never left the room he was born in and kept hostage in along with his mother.

Prudence Taylor
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

5
The story of the Jewish wars with Rome ending at Masada as told through the voices of 4 women - Yael, Revka, Azziza, and Shirah. Wonderful characters - best historical novel I've read this year.

Joanne Bozik
The Crush by Sandra Brown

5
She writes the best of thrillers with romance!!! I had won one of her books on Goodreads and I am now hooked!!!!!!! "The Crush" is great, scary, especially when there's a psycho in it, romance, great characters, witty, the best!

Ann Hengst
The Perfect Suspect by Margaret Coel

4
Interesting storyline again about a murder of a politician and involves a cop.

Suzanne Gonneville
The Sleepwalkers by Paul Grossman

4
The first quarter of this book was hard to get into. After that, my understanding of what was happening became peaked and I continued without interruption. The story takes place immediately before Hitler claimed Germany. Much is going on within the political structure and the famous Jewish police inspector finds many disturbing activities. He realizes his Germany will never be the same again.

Sherrie Gil
The Help by Kathryn Stockett

5
This is a great novel for all to read!

Suzanne Gonneville
Planting Dandelions by Kyran Pittman

5
I know this is the funniest book I've ever read. I laughed on nearly every page with tears running down my face. I spent a lot of time wiping my eyes so I could again begin reading. My husband solicitously asked me a few times if I was all right. The honestly written stories about Kyran's life are beautifully done and I know she has a true heart and feeling for all that is good.

Debbie Bentman
The Fixer Upper by Mary Kay Andrews

4
Surprisingly delightful. I have never read any of her books. During the school year (I am a teacher), I like to read things that are light.

Michelle Thomas
New York to Dallas by J.D. Robb

5
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'm at the very end of it and am already eager to read the next one. I absolutely love Eve and Roarke.

Reva W.
The Book of Fate by Brad Meltzer

3
This is the first book I've read by this author & I had a little trouble getting into it. But it gets better as you go along & the ending was a surprise. It starts out with an assassination attempt on the president where two of his aids are shot, one in the face & the other supposedly died. Eight years later, Wes, the one who was shot in the face is still working for the now ex-president when, on a trip out of the country, he comes face to face with the man who was supposedly dead. He starts investigating & finds that there was more to the plot than originally thought.

Lorraine Jarvis
Defending Jacob by William Landay

5
This book was GREAT!! It is about a District Attorney whose 14-year-old son Jacob is accused of killing a classmate. This book was hard to put down. When I thought the story was over I wondered why there were so many pages left. It was not over. LOVED it. This book will be available Jan. 31, 2012.

The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh

This is a hard-to-put-down-story about redemption. The author switches back and forth between the present day and past life of Victoria and the problems she had growing up in foster homes after she was abandoned as an infant.

Susan
The Dressmaker of Khair Khana by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon

4
The Dressmaker of Khair Khana is the true story of Kamilia Sidiqi, an extraordinary woman who ran a successful business in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. An Inspirational story!.

Judy O.
An Irish Country Courtship by Patrick Taylor

3
This is the 4th book I have read in this series, and it was a fun read--just like the others. We again get into the lives of Doctor Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly and his assistant Dr. Barry Laverty in the little Irish town of Ballybucklebo. Barry's girlfriend, Patricia Spence, breaks up with him, and he is despondent. Dr. O'Reilly's budding romance with Kitty Halloran is not helping his mood. We also get into the larcenous plans of Bertie Bishop, who is running a horse racing scam. All of these events come together into an entertaining read. I loved the authentic sound of the Irish language.

Susan
Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult

4
Once again, Picoult tackles a controversial subject. This time: Gay rights! What makes this story different than her others? This time Picoult has written the lyrics to original songs to correspond to the story. A wonderful audio book experience!

One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp

5
I am on my second time through it and recommended it to my book group and they will do it next month. The author accepted a challenge --- write down what you are thankful for until one thousand has been reached. Her writing form is different and becomes a story of her days on this journey. A joyful book!

Not as good as in the past, but James is still producing Alex Cross.

Danna Lambert
A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley

5
After reading the first Flavia de Luce book written by Alan Bradley, I became an ardent fan of the feisty girl, and eagerly look forward to each new book. I normally read murder mysteries, especially those with a well-plotted twist. However, I am totally fascinated by Flavia, the interactions of her family, and her cunning little 'revenge' techniques.

Not a Creature Was Stirring by Jane Haddam

3
This is the first in the Gregor Demarkian (retired FBI agent) series. It shows promise, but this is only an okay mystery. The plot is plodding, and the characters not sufficiently fleshed out. I see promise here, however, so I'm sure I'll read at least one more in the series.

Marjorie
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

5
This one certainly holds your attention. It teaches the reader a lot about Sweden as well. Sad that Stieg Larsson is lost to us for further writing after this first of a trilogy.

Marjorie
The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson

5
The second of the trilogy. I'm mad that there will be no more after the third of the series.

Marjorie
Only His by Susan Mallery

5
Susan Mallory is always fun to read, and this book about the third of the triplets in Fool's Gold, California, is no exception. Montana and Dakota have found their mates and now it is Nevada's turn.

Lynn W
1105 Yakima Street by Debbie Macomber

3
1105 Yakima Street is the address of Bruce and Rachel Peyton and thirteen-year-old Jolene, except pregnant Rachel has left because Jolene's jealousy is too stressful. Olivia's and Will's mother left something on a lit burner --- the kitchen is a total loss. The Bellamy's have separated because of Leonard's shameful treatment of Linc, daughter Lori's new husband. Such wonderful reading to solve these challenges by the end of the book!

Lynn W
Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher

4
Elfrida Phipps settles in a quaint English village with her dog, Horace, and good neighbors. Tragedy upsets her new found peace and she takes refuge in the north of Scotland. Corrydale attracts waifs and strays, each escaping past difficulties. As the solstice passes and Christmas approaches, the healing power of love begins to work its magic. This book is on my all-time favorite list. I read in every year before Christmas.

Denise Beierbach
Kill Alex Cross by James Patterson

3
Not bad...but not so good. Is James losing his touch? I wasn't enthralled.

Laura Beierbach
The Sisters by Nancy Jensen

4
The author has some good insight about relationships, and applies it to her story.

Wendy Catalano
Bring Me Home For Christmas by Robyn Carr

4
What a wonderful feel good book just in time for the holiday season. This is a great addition to the Virgin River series (which is one of my favorites of all time) with its unique characters and the small, close-knit community that surrounds them. I look forward to the next book that never seems to come quick enough.

Yes, I have only read one chapter so far, but it is beautiful. Looking forward to savoring a long read.

Edge by Jeffrey Deaver

3
It took me quite awhile to get through this one. Henry Loving is a lifter, hired to get information by any means --- including torture. His expertise is in getting an "edge" by kidnapping or threatening someone close to his principal, exerting pressure until they cave. When Washington D.C.'s police detective Ryan Kessler inexplicably becomes Loving's target, the job of keeping Kessler's familyalive falls to a senior federal protection office named Corte, who lost a friend to Loving's ruthless machinations six years earlier. As Corte and his team race to counter Loving, the lifter moves in on his prey --- and Corte must choose between protecting his charges and exposing them to a killer in the name of long-awaited revenge.

Jackie Ranaldo
The Cypress House by Michael Koryta

5
This is an excellent suspense thriller! It takes place during the depression in a back water Florida coastal town. The local law enforcement is corrupt and taking advantage of the locals. Arlen Wagner, a World War I vet, unexpectedly ends up in High Town and takes on the corruption. Arlen has a very special gift --- he can see when someone is about to die. Makes for a very interesting storyline.

I've discovered Brown's thrillers to be right on!!!

Arthur Harriman
The Horizontal Man by Helen Eustis

4
A farrago of personalities met with more commonly in an abnormal psychology textbook are spotlighted in this somewhat depressing, but well-plotted, murder tale which is, however barely classifiable as a mystery.

DebbB
The Fifth Woman by Hanning Mankell

5
I have only been reading foreign language translated books for about two years and I am so sorry that I never took the opportunity to do so earlier in my life. This book is one that keeps you reading into the night, the characters are very easy to relate to, suspenseful, plot is good and the chance for a follow up book is also there. I loved the description of Sweden, it's people, it's politics and the lifestyle. I would recommend this book for anyone that likes a really good suspense thriller.

Michele Counihan
The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

5
This is a great story, very well-written. I have read Hemingway and admire his work, but this is a gripping story of the unraveling of a marriage and perfect description of him as a talented, famous narcissist. I was mesmerized.

CC
Black Echo by Michael Connelly

5
This is an old one but it was interesting to see Harry Bosch in earlier years and see the beginning of his relationship with Eleanor Wish who is often referred to in later books.

Linda Johnson
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
I've needed a book like this for a long time --- a page turner, one I didn't want to put down, one I really didn't want to end. I bought into the circus from the beginning and I wanted to run away with it. It would be hard to explain the story of this book, actually to do so would ruin, for subsequent readers, the ride on the carousel. The story resembles a lace doily - beautiful to behold without recognizing all the pieces of cotton that make up the individual threads of the story. This is a fantasy, a mystery, and has multiple love stories. I was one of the lovers.

Jacki Maxwell
Kill Alex Cross by James Patterson

5
I haven't read this yet, but I think I have read all of his other Alex Cross books and thoroughly enjoyed them. I anticipate this one will be just as good a read.

Bob Chase
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese

5
This book is very entertaining and very memorable even half way through.

Rachelle Belletete
Long Drive Home by Will Allison

3
Will Allison's novel makes the reader think about what one's actions. I found it enjoyable and thought provoking. When finishing though, I was wanting more, but it ended abruptly.

One Summer by David Baldacci

3
If you are a Baldacci thriller fan beware, this is a radical departure from a typical Baldacci book. This is a soft, sweet family story. Aside from a couple of surprises early in the book, it is a predictable story with predictable events. It is clean and very well written. I applaud the effort and know that it will attract and please an entirely new audience for this brilliant author. My rating is based purely on the fact that this is not my reading preference.

Teresa A. Ryan
Dracula by Bram Stoker

5
I have read this before in the abridged edition. Now I am trying to find the unabridged edition. I have just gotten a Nook e-reader and I love it. Makes it easier to carry my books to the doctor's office.

Nicole Aben
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant

5
A great read set around the time of the bible but from a woman's perspective.

Paul Dimino
Suspect by Michael Robotham

4
This is a good thriller set in London. The author keeps ratcheting up the tension as the main character gets deeper into trouble.

Debbie M
Naughty in Nice by Rhys Bowen

3
The weather is lousy in England, so the rich head to the French Riviera. Georgie feels excluded when her brother and his wife head to the Riviera until the Queen asks Georgie to go and find a stolen snuffbox. During this escapade to the Riviera, Georgie models for Coco Chanel, becomes a murder suspect, meets some fascinating men, and spies on Crown Prince David and his new love interest, Wallis Simpson. Bowen does a nice job presenting the world of the rich and the royalty, but falls short on detailing her characters. The story is an easy read with no graphic murder scene.

Jane Gaulton
Light From a Distant Star by Mary McGarry Morris

5
I loved this book. Nellie grabbed my heart and never let go. The adults were very frustrating but my emotional reaction to them just emphasizes how good this book reads.

Tides of War by Stella Tillyard

5
I am a big fan of historical fiction. Yet, although I love the characters and the history, I have to admit that the writing itself sometimes leaves something to be desired and the dialogue is often confusing and stilted. I imagine its difficult to create interesting conversations for people long dead from times long ago. This book about England and Spain during the time of the Peninsular War is an exception. Ms. Tillyard allows us to feel the pain of war and the frustrations of separation of loved ones without all the blood and gore typical of war novels. I felt the horrors soldiers experienced and the loneliness and boredom of those left behind. I was able to experience both the pride and joy of the Spaniards as well as the nausea and disgust of the English soldier. I truly feel that this is a book for everyone and every book club.

State of Wonder by Ann Patchett

3
I love Ann Patchett. Bel Canto has been one of my favorite books. I was not, as others, spellbound by this book. It kept me interested; it was an easy read. But I felt that the concept was somewhat far fetched and that the conclusions that the scientists ultimately made were obvious. Good parts, some suspense but not Patchett's best.

Connie B.
The Search by Nora Roberts

4
This was an excellent romantic suspense book. I listened to this on audio and all the voices were done superbly. Also, if you are a dog lover this is a must read full of great training tips. Fiona Bristow was kidnapped eight years ago by a serial killer however, she was able to get away. So the killer went after her fiance and his K-9 dog and killed them both. It was Fiona's testimony that put the killer behind bars. In her finances memory she started a dog training school which does search and rescue. Fiona meets Simon Doyle who would like his dog trained and that is how the romance portion of the book starts. Someone starts imitating the serial killer so now the race is on to find him before he kills any more young women. Excellent to the very end!!!

Lauri Wilson
The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan

4
After only a few chapters I could see this book is unique, it's not your ordinary paranormal novel. After I finish, I think it will get another star. I wouldn't recommend it for Twilight readers though.

Sharon Cerasoli
China Wakes: The Struggle for the Soul of a Rising Power by Nicholas D. Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn

4
I'm really enjoying this nonfiction account of China's economic burgeoning interspersed with the communist reality in China. The authors are journalists who spent years in China, culminating in this book.

Linda H
Total Control by David Baldacci

5
This book is one of Baldacci’s earlier works but is one that you will not be able to put down once you start reading it. As FBI Agent Lee Sawyer investigates an airplane crash, he uncovers a plot where the chairman of the Federal Reserve Board was being blackmailed into changing the interest rates drastically causing some companies to lose everything while others grew by leaps and bounds. As investigations continue, an executive with a major company who was supposed to be on the downed airliner is shown as being alive. The film also shows him exchanging papers. Was he exchanging vital company information to a competitor? Is this connected to the crash and if so, how? A great book!

Linda H
The Devil Colony by James Rollins

5
Once you start reading one of James Rollins’ books, you can’t put it down until the end and this one is no exception. A fiery explosion at a dig site of ancient Indian ruins leads Sigma to the science of nanotechnology. Painter Crowe, director of Sigma Force, rushes to the scene when he identifies his niece running from the cave on television news coverage of the blast. Gray Pierce, commander of Sigma Force, tries to find out who is behind the infamous Guild using their former assassin Seichan. A great book.

Quinn by Iris Johansen

4
This is the second book in the trilogy and Joe Quinn is the ex-FBI agent who fell in love with Eve while investigating the kidnapping of her daughter Bonnie. Eve and Joe have called on Catherine Ling, a CIA agent, to help locate John Gallo, Bonnie’s biological father. They believe that Gallo killed Bonnie while he was temporarily insane as a result of his years of imprisonment in Korea. Catherine is beginning to have doubts about Gallo’s guilt and helps him locate a man who might have answers to what happened to Bonnie. A good book and I am can’t wait to read the final book in the trilogy, Bonnie.

Angel Fire by Lisa Unger

Lydia Strong writes books about true crimes. She was a victim herself when she was a child and came home from school one day to find her mother murdered. Seeing her grieving while sitting on her doorstep, FBI agent Jeffrey Mark helped Lydia with her grief. Now part owner of an investigative firm, Jeff travels to Lydia’s home in Angel Fire, New Mexico where they both become involved in catching a serial killer.

Linda H
One Was a Soldier by Julia Spencer-Fleming

4
This book was about several characters who had served in Iraq and the problems they faced once home. The book centers around Sheriff Russ Van Alstyne and Reverend Clare Fergusson, who are a major and helicopter pilot in the National Guard. There is also a mystery regarding the theft of several million dollars from the US Army which occurred when false invoices were submitted for payment. It took a while to get into the book but once I did, it was hard to put it down.

jan kanowitz
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

5
This latest book by the prolific author Alice Hoffman is historical fiction at its finest. Taking place in the year 70 C.E. in ancient Israel this story tells about four women who make their way to Masada as they flee the Romans. Nine hundred people fought off the Romans for several months. Most people committed suicide rather than submit. Two women and five children survived. This is really one of the finest of Hoffman's books.

Judy Stein
The End of Everything by Megan Abbott

4
Told from thirteen-year-old Lizzie's viewpoint, this is a gripping story about a kidnapping that wasn't (until it was) and a perfect family whose golden aura hid terrible secrets and rivalries. Abbott captures the teenager's voice in the book beautifully --- their loyalties, their angst, their secrets and keeps things just ambiguous enough to intrigue the reader.

Joanne King
Killer Stuff and Tons of Money: Seeking History and Hidden Gems in Flea Market America by Maureen Stanton

5
Great book about the flea market and antiques sub culture. The author has a witty and fun way of teaching us the history of antiques and old things.

Lynn in VA
Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns

5
This story is about a family in the very early 1900s as told by a young boy. It was a very enjoyable read. You can't help but laugh out loud during parts of this story. It leaves you wanting to know more though so I'll have to pick up the 2nd book (although not finished by the author prior to her death so it will probably leave me with more questions than answers).

Duncan Fox
The Drop by Michael Connelly

4
A solid entry in the Harry Bosch chronicles. After 9 Dragons some might have told Mr. Connelly to stick to his Mickey Haller (Lincoln Lawyer) series, but this is a return to earlier form for our LA detective. A lot of play is made of the fact that Bosch is only a few years away from retirement, and that may not be a bad thing, to stop before his character gets too old. But there should be a few more novels left in Bosch yet.

Natalie Watson
Killer Stuff and Tons of Money: Seeking History and Hidden Gems in Flea-Market America by Maureen Stanton

5
I Thoroughly enjoyed this book even though I'm not an antiquer - but I do love a bargain, yard sales and flea markets - great information and storytelling here. The author tags alongside a dealer who has a colorful personality which makes for very fun reading. A great find and I will not never discard anything my mother, grandmother or mother in law gave me before finding out what it's worth!

Dianna D
The Silver Boat by Luanne Rice

This is a good story about three sisters who need to decide what to do with the family vacation home. It seems a familiar subject.

Make the Bread, Buy the Butter:What You Should and Shouldn’t Cook from Scratch by Jennifer Reese

4
When Jennifer Reese lost her full-time job she began to economize by making things she had previously bought at the grocery store. This turned into a series of experiments on whether it’s better to make or buy. Was it cheaper? More expensive? Easy or too time consuming? This book is a delightful chronicle of her results. I was expecting only a cookbook filled with recipes, practical advice and cost comparisons, but I was pleased to discover a lot more. Along with the 120 recipes is a must-read narrative. I sat down with the book to look through the recipes and ended up reading it cover to cover. Her witty, humorous, easy to read style of writing made for some hilarious tales from raising chickens and goats, making honey using her own beehives and even an attempt at curing meat. She also delves into the health benefits of home cooking, the additives and chemicals in store bought foods, plus making your own often tastes better. Educational, informative, some great recipes and a delight to read, I recommend this to both adventurous cooks those challenged by the kitchen.

Tollie Stuprich
Running the Books-The Adventures of an Accidental Prison Librarian by Avi Steinberg

4
I am about half way through this book and it captured my interest with the first sentence, "Pimps make the best librarians." This is a great telling of work in a library in a tough Boston prison. Avi notes in the cover "While the incidents in this book did in fact happen, some of the names and personal characteristics of the individuals have been changed in order to disguise their identities." You think? This book seems to be giving readers a good look into one part of the prison world. This book is a learning experience. I do feel sorry for those prisoners, who for some reason, are not allowed to use the library. This book is fascinating and informative. I will recommend it!

Adam DeClercq
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Schafer

2
This book came highly recommended from some friends. My wife read it and loved it. I did not. There are some good one liners but I find it tedious and unbelievable. The story is written as letters back and forth from different characters. It is set right after World War II and is interesting in that it explores the idea of an English channel island under Nazi occupation. I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish this book.

Marjorie Clark
Hell's Corner by David Baldacci

I'm not quite finished, so I can't comment on it just yet.

China Dawn by David Sheff

5
China Dawn is a book where the author tells in depth stories about two capitalists who were really upset about what happened in Tiananmon Square. Because of these events, these two gentlemen are trying to turn China into a capitalist country via technology. It is a very interesting book that was hard to put down.

Wendy Catalano
In Leah's Wake by Terri Giuliano Long

4
An intense family drama dealing with the struggles of Leah, the teenage daughter, and the impact it has on her family. This novel is told through the eyes of Leah, her sister, her parents and even the police officer that is involved. We, as readers, are able to experience and identify with their perspectives on this heartbreaking situation that quickly spirals out of control. This story was very well written, brutally honest, and will stay with me for a very long time.

How the Mistakes Were Made by Tyler McMahon

5
This is a fantastic novel about the making and breaking of a superstar rock band in the early days of Seattle's grunge scene.

The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly

4
Mickey Haller, the Lincoln Lawyer, finding his business drying up has turned to foreclosure defense. One of his clients is accused of killing a banker she blames for taking away her home. In a complicated case, Mickey struggles between his personal life and the court proceedings and after being beaten by professional thugs, rallies to mount his best defense. It is fast-paced, thrilling and insightful.

Sean P.
The Fall by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan

3
After thoroughly enjoying the first book in this trilogy (5 stars) I was eagerly waiting to read this. When the time finally came I realized that the book probably would have been better off if it had ended after book one. Here there is so much going on that characters aren’t able to be developed, they get forgotten, and the schemes seem too complicated. The idea of vampirism being a contagion was fantastic but here it goes in a different direction that loses its coolness. Also, there are so many times where the rules of the contagion that the writers invented seemed to break. Overall, a big disappointment based on its predecessor but not terrible.

Ellen Hinkle
Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes

5
I've read several novels about the Vietnam War and think that Matterhorn is the best. It's certainly a gritty subject matter, but if one really wants to get a feel for the war, there's no better or no more compelling novel that Matterhorn.

Karen Beierlein
Wench by Dolen Perkins-Valdez

5
I loved the whole story. It's about choosing between family and freedom, what love means and sisterhood. i liked adding in the factual of the actual place in Ohio. A good history lesson in the form of entertainment. It would make a great movie.

Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick

This book describes the lives of a young girl from 1927 (in pictures) and a young boy from 1977 intertwine at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It includes beautiful pencil illustrations from the author.

Paula C.
Holly Blues by Susan Wittig Albert

3
It has been a long time since I have disliked a character in a book. Although the book didn't end as I had hoped, it was a good weekend read. The information about the holly plant/tree that introduced most chapters was interesting.

The Blood Royal by by Barbara Cleverly

4
This is another Joe Sandilands mystery. This one introduces a new character, Lily Wentworth, a young woman police constable.

Donna K
The Taker by Alma Katsu

4
I understand this is the author's first novel and it was a very good read. I thought it was going to be about vampires, and I'm rather tired of vampires, but it was something else entirely. It was well worth reading.

Debbie M
The Sandburg Connection by Mark de Castrique

2
Castrique thoroughly researches his subject matter. In this story an escapade involves the Flat Rock home of Carl Sandburg and mountain music. The characters in this novel lack depth. I enjoy the journey into the Flat Rock area, the mountain songs, and the tales of Carl Sandburg, but the death and resulting mystery do not create anticipation. The story is a quick read and not a novel that will cause further investigation.

Debbie M
A Christmas Homecoming by Anne Perry

3
This is a story set in the 1890's about the new novel Bram Stoker's Dracula. The setting is Christmas as a troupe of actors goes to the country estate in the village of Whitby to perform a stage production of Dracula. The estate owner's daughter has adapted the play from the novel. A mysterious guest, Mr. Ballin, arrives as the rehearsals begin. With Mr. Ballin's help the production captures the essence of Stoker's Dracula. Of course, this Christmas novella must have adversity, in this case a death during a winter snowstorm. Caroline Fielding, the mother of Charlotte Pitt from the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series must solve the mystery. This is a short novella, but I like the way that Perry has used the play production to enhance the story. The scenes and dialogue for the production show mystery and danger waiting to enter the house.

VT
The Infernals by John Connolly

4
I loved "The Book of Lost Things" and "The Gates" so I knew I would like this one too. I read this in novel form as our library did not purchase the audio book version but I would definitely recommend the audio experience. "The Infernals" is a sequel to "The Gates" both hilarious books about a small boy named Samuel and his faithful dachshund Boswell who encounter demons like Nurd the Scourge of Five Deities, The Great Malevolence and all the other residents of Hell. Listening to the demons carry on in their British accents (especially the Liverpool) is priceless.

Barbara Kirch
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5
The visual descriptions were absolutely stunning. I felt as if I were actually in the audience. The characters were well portrayed, and this was the kind of book I didn't want to put down, but at the same time was sorry to see it end.

Kathy Vallee
Wanted Deb or Alive by Laurie Moore

5
This book is the second in the series of the "A Debutante Detective Mystery" Awoken by a desperate phone call from her sister saying her best friend had gone to Mexico after tier debutante ball. She was not making any sense and she only told Dainty she was in Mexico , she thought she was in a hospital, and did not know where her best friend was. So Dainty asked her why she did not call the police and her sister Teeny says you don't understand I have been trying to tell you it was the police that did it. So Dainty takes it upon herself to go down there herself to rescue her sister and the friend even though she does not even know how to speak the language. Great read.

When She Woke by Hillary Jordan

3
The setting of this book is in Texas sometime in the future. Hannah Payne has been "chromed" and imprisoned for having an abortion, since it is now illegal. Being chromed means that she was injected with a virus that turned her skin bright red. When she is released from prison, her shame is evident for all to see. Her lover was a prominent married pastor in the Dallas area, and Hannah strives to protect him. The second half of the book promptly gets really weird, and I found myself wondering why I was reading it. I did enjoy it through most of the first half. Not my taste, I guess.

The Girl Who Disappeared Twice by Andrea Kane

5
Just started this book so can't tell you how it ends.....but it starts out strong and has held my interest from the beginning chapter with a twin being stolen from her bedroom one night as her sister watches .....fast forward 30 years to NY and a team of forensic investigators.......that's as far as i've gotten ... love it so far....fast paced and well written....draws the reader in.......

Some may find the way the chapters go back in forth in time off-putting, but DON'T! This book is worth the efffort. It is a story of love and magic. Good and evil. Past and present. You will not be able to put this one down!

3
Not one of her best --- what happens to a family when their daily life changes over death.

Lisa S.
The Lost Wife by Alyson Richman

4
When I first started reading I felt that this would be a boring historical novel. What I loved about this novel was once I really got to the meat of the story, I was feeling the characters. I enjoyed how we learn of their lives after WWII. We have had so many books in the past few years that have dealt with the horrors that Hitler put on the Jewish people. What I liked about the novel was in the midst of that awful time, some good did happen. Amazing artist drew and recorded what was going on in the camps. These works were saved and these people took risk with their own lives to record this. The love story and the story of their new loves was sweet and touching. This is a very accurate account of history and a very sweet love story.

Gil
Crooked Letter Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin

5
This story is about an unlikely friendship between two boys in the deep south, one white and the other black. The white boy is referred to as Scary Larry because he is believed to be a serial killer. The black boy, Silas, is a baseball star who goes off to Ole MIss and becomes a policeman. There are two murders. Larry is suspected and Silas investigates. The story describes incidents that happened in their youth that contribute to a surprise ending.

Trez
The Darkening Field by William Ryan

5
A very riveting read. Comrade Korolev is a detective in Moscow in 1937. Russian history indicates this was a very dangerous time in that country. Korolev is instructed to go to Odessa to investigate the murder of a Soviet film star. Soon after arrival, Korolev begins to realize that there are some aspects of the solution to this murder that may involve and or offend higher ups in the party. He may be in serious trouble if he finds the truth. This is what keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat turning pages. This is a very good read.

Gil
Fall of Giants by Ken Follet

5
The first of a trilogy, covering the leadup to World War I and the armistice. The story includes the injustices between the nobility and the common people in Great Britain, the brutality of the tsar and the revolution in Russia, and behind the scenes in Germany with their war plans.

Tia
Never Knowing by Chevy Stevens

4
A very good suspenseful read from Ms. Stevens. As with her first novel, Still Missing, I couldn't put this book down. I thought it might be a little slower and not as psychologically intense but still a great novel. I recommend it highly.

Linda
The Memory of All That: George Gershwin, Kay Swift, and My Family's Legacy of by Katharine Weber

4
Dishy memoir by granddaughter of Kay Swift who was the first woman to write a complete Broadway musical "Fine and Dandy". She also had an affair with George Gershwin and may have been the love of his life. The book starts with the author's reminisces of her father who had numerous affairs while married to her mother. Loved recognizing names of people in the periphery of the author's life.

Linda
The Library of Babel by Jorge Luis Borges

Borges' view of a library. Beautiful illustrations. Only 36 pages.

Tessa B
White Oleander by Janet Fitch

4
Astrid narrates her experiences in the foster care system during the six years following her mother's imprisonment for murdering an ex-lover. Powerful, horrific and tender.

Debbie M
The Scarpetta Factor by Patricia Cornwell

3
This book ties up some issues from earlier novels. The Wolfman reappears into the life of Kay. Kay seems to be working nonstop as an analyst for CNN, a consultant for the New York Police Department, and a medical examiner in Massachusetts. In this novel many issues are introduced: financial scams, medical secrecy between doctor and patient, secrets kept by Lucy and Benton, and fraud. As earlier noted, many factors from prior novels are resolved in this novel such as Jean-Baptiste and Warner Agee, a colleague of Benton. I like the sense of hope of the end of the novel. All the characters are flawed and constantly making errors, but they are trying. As usual, Cornwell seems fixated on the Christmas season.

Angela
Little Bee by Chris Cleave

Very informative and character-driven. I learned of events occurring in Africa I never knew. Loved everything about it.

Dennis

3
Not as inspiring as one may hope.

Nanette
The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino

A bit different than I normally read but it's holding my interest. This is a crime drama with a twist.

Julie
Pie Town by Lynne Hinton

4
So far I'll give this book four stars. I am in the middle of it and am really enjoying the way this author writes. This is the story of Pie Town, New Mexico. The town's fortunes take an unexpected turn when the new priest, Father George Morris arrives who is woefully unprepared for his first assignment and also for the young hitchhiker who is trouble with a capital T.

Elaine
The Gap Year by Sarah Bird

5
Sarah Bird's clever dialogue, endearing characters, plot twists and humor deliver a delicious story of mother, daughter, estranged and absent father, an intriguing career for the mom (lactation specialist) which required some research on the author's part --- all come together in a wonderful book. Is college for everyone? Find your answer here. Sarah Bird is the one writer I buy in hardback the minute a new title comes out, and I eat it like rich dessert in small bites, savoring the taste.

Dianna D
Birds of Paradise by Diana Abu-Jaber

4
I really liked this book. Written about each of the characters in their own chapters about how a disappearance of a child effects everyone.

Lynn W
When We Went First Class by Ellen Williamson

3
I bought this old (1977) book at a yard sale because I liked the cover; a fashionably dressed couple of the 20s standing in front of a locomotive. I liked the memoir inside even more. The author wrote a cheerful, lively, funny book about her life in the twenties, thirties, and forties when first class really meant something. She reminisces about boarding schools, debutante dances, afternoon teas, and dating and dancing in wonderful New York City night spots. The reader is along for the rides on the great ocean liners, private Pullman cars, and Pierce-Arrow automobiles before maps and paved roads. It's a tale of the goodness of life lived to the fullest.

Keith
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet by David Mitchell

5
One the best period novels I have read in many years. Mr. Mitchell's prose is marvelous. This book is a gripping tale of life in Japan at the end of the eighteenth century. Atmospheric! Recommended to all lovers of the historical novel.

Lorna
Odd Thomas by Dean Koonz

3
I started this a while ago and really couldn't get into this. I loved Odd Thomas and couldn't wait to find out what was going on with him ... not so interesting. He sees dead people, but not in a bad way. This time he is trying to save a friend who was kidnapped and follows the kidnappers to a deserted old casino. The main kidnapper has found out about Odd's gift and wants his services. I found it kind of boring, but funny at times but it did deliver a good ending.

As the Pig Turns: An Agatha Raisin Mystery by M.C. Beaton

4
I'm always ready for an adventure with Agatha Raisin as she solves murders in the quiet and picturesque Cotswold villages. This latest episode proved just as entertaining as suspenseful. In the epilogue, M.C. Beaton ties up the loose ends of the case and provides a tantalizing preview into what Agatha might be doing while we anxiously wait for the next book in the series.

The KenKen Killings: A Puzzle Lady Mystery by Parnell Hall

5
The latest Puzzle Lady Mystery is funny while still being a good mystery. I laughed out loud at some passages. Also, I didn't guess the correct killer(s). I enjoyed the story so much that I read it in one sitting.

Nicole
Angels by Marian Keyes

5
I love anything written by this author --- she is so funny, this one is a great chick-lit read.

A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama's Mother by Janny Scott

4
Fascinating read about Barack's early childhood and youth, and his unique, progressive mother. It gives new insight into the man who would later be President. It is also bitter-sweet, since his mother did not live long enough to know about her son's accomplishments.

ck
The Litigators by John Grisham

5
Finley & Figg have a boutique law firm in Southwest Chicago. Read that and you know this is going to be a book filled with wonderful humor. Grisham pokes fun at lawyers but also gives us nuggets of wisdom about the law, particularly frivolous filings. Enjoy! I did.

The Dark Half by Stephen King

An oldie but a real scary book from the master. Don't read it alone on a dark night!

The River King by Alice Hoffman

Fascinatingly weird in many ways...

A Thousand Days in Venice by Marlena de Blasi

3
Within a few months the author quits her job as a chef, sells her house, and leaves her two grown children to move to Venice. Why would she leave her satisfying life? LOVE, of course. This book is delightful.

Jessica
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

5
I reviewed this book on my blog and I totally gushed over it. So beautiful and profound. I love how Ms. Hoffman writes and how she honors women in her work. She sees our strengths and captures what is is to be woman and an individual. Loved it.

The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh

This was a very beautiful, well told story. What a beautiful way to communicate!

We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Schriver

4
Very disturbing but awfully "good" book...quite difficult to like the characters but I found it difficult to put down anyway...I needed to know what would happen. I would think it would be excellent for Book Clubs, so much to discuss.

The Taker by Alma Katsu

I thought this book was going to be another vampire story, but boy was I surprised! A great dark mystery.

Michelle
The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara

5
History written in novel format! This author really makes history come to life. I am neither a history buff nor a civil war buff but I thouroughly enjoyed this book. I was ready to charge the hill right along with them.

Once Upon A Time, There Was You by Elizabeth Berg

4
Very enjoyable story about the divorced parents of a teenager and how they handle trauma in their daughter's life. This book did not have the typical happily-ever-after ending but rather a realistic and satisfactory ending. A great read.

Bridget
Jake by Audrey Couloumbis

5
This is a children's book that I read to see if it would be a good recommendation for my Fifth grade class. Even though it's a children's book I could not put it down. It was about a boy and his mom who is injured just before Christmas. His distant grandfather arrives to help them and all sorts of things happen. Ideas such as what makes a family, how people become estranged and how fences can be mended are all discussed, but in a forthright, realistic way. There is nothing sugar coated about this book, even though there is a happy ending. I would recommend it to any adult in search of a good holiday read.

Bridget
The Christmas Wedding by James Patterson

1
A waste of time. The characters were caricatures. I found the main character to be especially annoying and totally unbelievable, as was the premise of the plot.

Sharon
The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery

3
This story takes place at an upscale apartment in Paris (the author is French). An intelligent and philosophical concierge makes friends with a suicidal 12 year old girl.

4th book of "A Song of Fire and Ice." Excellent writing, kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire book.

Rosalie
Moloka'i by Alan Brennert

5
Although the premise of this book --- the life of young girl taken from family due to diagnosis of leprosy --- should be depressing, it is actually very uplifting.

Muriel
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

5
This book was fascinating in regard to all the uses that have been made of Mrs. Lacks cancerous cells after she died in 1951. The cells were taken without her knowledge or that of her family and used to make important advances in a polio vaccine, cancer study, Aids research, gene mapping, etc. Not only is the scientific information interesting, but the details of her life and that of her family make quite an impact on the reader.

I don't normally read thriller/horror novels, but I'm a fan of Chris Bojalian's and this book kept me up for several nights. It's unique and enjoyable.

Cross Currents by John Shors

5
I loved this novel. I lived in Asia for several years, and Cross Currents brought the people and culture of Thailand back to me in a very vivid way. This is a powerful, wonderful novel. It's about the tsunami but so much more than that.

Recipes For Life by Linda Evans

4
What a pleasure it was to read the memoir of one of my favorite celebrities, Linda Evans. She takes us from her childhood, early years of acting, her Dynasty years, including all of her accomplishments to present day. She incorporates pictures and recipes, collected over the years from people who have meant a great deal to her, with memories that have meant the most and made an impact on her life. We learn about her friendships, marriages, heartbreak and her inspiring spiritual journey. A wonderful read by a woman who is truly an inspiration.

Cold Truth by Mariah Stewart

5
An uncommonly crafty serial killer challenges two crime-fighting women with problematic pasts in the first of a new romantic suspense trilogy from RITA-nominee Stewart (Dead End). In a tantalizing prologue, Regan Landry, the daughter of a recently murdered famous true crime writer, discusses her father's files of unsolved cases in a TV interview, which inspires a globe-trotting mass murderer to return to the small Jersey shore town where his killing spree began. It's also home to police detective Cassandra Reilly, whose entire family was slaughtered 26 years before by a killer who'd been caught. Or had he? As the new body count climbs, Cassie and Regan, paired with two suitably strong yet sensitive FBI agents, gradually unravel an obsession-rooted mystery spanning continents and decades, in which nearly everyone could be a suspect. As in most of Stewart's work, sex is minimal; emotional entanglements focus as strongly on family ties as romantic love. Loved it!!!

The Return of Captain John Emmett by Elizabeth Speller

An excellent literary debut, this novel brings home the devastation suffered during and after World War I. Comparable to the novels of Charles Todd featuring Bess Crawford and Ian Rutledge.

Eggsecutive Orders: A White House Chef Mystery by Julie Hyzy

4
I really enjoy her books, this is the third book I've read. It's an entertaining, quick read with the end of the book having some very good reciepes. An interesting look inside the working of the White House kitchen too.

The Paris Wife by Paula McClain

5
This was an especially touching novel, written in beautiful prose. I was completely pleasantly surprised by this book. I could not put it down, even though I knew the unfortunate ending. Ms. McClain put me right in the middle of Paris with the Hemingways and I could feel every emotion and picture and every landscape with her lush descriptions. All other members of my book group gave this book a 7 or 8, but I say 10 all the way!!

The Women by T.C. Boyle

5
I so admire the way T.C. Boyle makes Frank Lloyd Wright come alive. His descriptions of FLW are spot on and I feel like I am right there experiencing his genius and vision firsthand.

The Birth House by Ami McKay

4
I read this book for my book club and it was a wonderful read. The story of a midwife in rural Nova Scotia around 1917, this book described the lives of rural women who had very little access to medical aid in time of childbirth.

Sandra F.
Pearl of China by Anchee Min

4
I loved this book. It is a fictional account of the life of Pearl S. Buck in China told by a fictional Chinese girlhood friend Willow Yee. The last half of the book after Pearl was expelled from China in the 1930's, deals with Chairman Mao and the Communist rule in the country. It is difficult to believe that the Chinese peasants were able to survive such hardship.

Yvonne
The Paper Bag Christmas by Kevin Alan Milne

5
This a quick read about having a TRUE Christmas Season. It invovles 2 brothers, ages 9 and 11 and how they learned about the gift "everything you've never wanted". It is a great story for young and old. I highly recommend it, especially for the upcoming season.

The Litigators by John Grisham

5
Oscar Finley and Wally Figg are partners in a seedy "boutique" law firm in Chicago. Business is terrible, and feckless Wally gets the firm involved in a mass tort law suit. The suit is against a huge pharmaceutical called Varrick, and it is specifically targeting a drug called Krayoxx that is supposedly causing people to die of sudden heart attacks. Enter David Zinc, a young man who has worked 100 hour weeks in a huge law firm working on bonds. He is totally burned out and joins the F & F Law Firm as an associate. None of them has any idea about how to really carry out their suit against Varrick, but they can't really just drop the suit either. The rest of the book is an entertaining look at bumbling lawyers trying to make lots of money without really practicing much law at all. It is a very entertaining book.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

5
This is the second time I have read this book, with two different book clubs. I am a Program Developer for a Senior Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and combined my book club with a public celebration of all Veterans, in particular WWII Veterans. I had two veterans come, in uniform, to juxtapose the book with their actual war time experiences, with me serving as sort of a moderator. Two of the three local television stations showed up for the event. My Cincinnati book club read Sea Biscuit years ago, and I truly didn't think Laura Hillenbrand could outdo that book, but she did! I am currently in three different book clubs, so a BIG reader and I have always been intrigued with reading books set in the 40's, but this book really grabbed me for so many reasons. One, what an amazing amount of research the author did, especially in light of her health struggles with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Two, that Ms. Hillenbrand can take a subject that would not be nearly as interesting and easy to read and turn it into such a readable and enjoyable format. And last, but certainly not least, such an amazing story of a man and his will and fortitude to survive and overcome his youth, the war, and the demons that chased him after the war. I have since read anything I can find on Louis Zamparini and have tried to get him to visit our city and enlighten even more people. Needless to say, I loved it and will probably read it yet again!

Maybe it's me, but I couldn't get into this biography. It should have been fascinating reading, but my mind kept wandering...not a good sign when reading.

The Last Testament: A Memoir by God by David Javerbaum

5
This is one hilarious book! I took it with me everywhere (including the bathtub), and it never failed to brighten my spirits during these long, gray days of Autumn. 'Co-written' by a former 'Daily Show' writer/producer, God has much to say about the Bible, sports, family (his wife Ruth, and children Zach, Jesus, and Kathy), and his new Revelations. I laughed so hard that coffee spurted out of my nose.

I haven't finished it yet but can hardly put it down. This will be my favorite book of the year!

Wishes and Stitches by Rachael Herron

2
I was excited to learn about this series set in California that features knitting. Unfortunately, the series does not live up to my expectations. The Cypress Yarn series is very similar to the Seaside Knitter's Mystery series set in Massachusetts. But the Cypress Yarn series lacks characters and setting and emotion. Both series are not of the caliber of Elizabeth George or Patricia Cornwell, instead each is easy reading. Wishes and Stitches is not worthy of the reading time, but did enjoy the shawl pattern at the end of the book.

Smokin' Seventeen by Janet Evanovich

4
-#17 of Stephanie Plum series --- I am having some serious internal conflict here…I am totally pissed at this author for her lack of imagination for the last 5 books. The plot has not changed. Don’t waste your money by buying these books because it is the same book since around #12. Contrast to my rant, I have to say, this book was funny. The humor isn’t lost from book to book. And for some reason, this one seemed funnier than the last few. Bodies are turning up by the bonds office so the gang, Stephanie, Lula, Connie and Vinnie are using Mooners bus as their office. An old highschool class mate is back in town and Stephanie’s mother is trying to hook her up. He was on the football team and he’s a great cook. Does Stephanie have enough room for Dave in her life while she is still deciding between Morelli and Ranger? I would like to tell readers to quit on this author until she starts listening and shakes up her plot a bit but I can’t escape the pleasure I get from reading these books. The humor has not failed me yet.

Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon

5
I could be one of the last people on earth to start reading the Outlander series. I am so in love with the love story of Claire Randall and James Fraser. If the rest of the series books are as wonderful as the first two, I am in for a long satisfying read this winter. This book is #2 in the series. It is a love story that spans over two centuries. Layering in Scottish history along the way has been a great bonus and does not bog the story down at all. Can't wait to start #3!
