Think Twice by Lisa Scottoline
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the best one she has written!
Two Sisters. An unimaginable betrayal. A novel that takes you into the heart of good and evil.
Is evil born into us or bred?
You can' help but read this in one sitting.

The Canary List by Sigmund Brouwer
Rating: 3 Stars
The Canary List is a standard "good vs. evil" suspense story. Big, bad evil! This is the first book I've ever read by Mr. Brouwer and I, personally, found it to be quite intriguing. Even though it is a work of fiction, it's written in a manner that seems to imply that it may be based on factual occurrences. Makes a person wonder.

Lori
Bride of New France by Suzanne Desrochers
Rating: 4 Stars
This book tells the story of the filles du roi --- the King's Daughters --- who were sent to Canada in 1669 to become wives of the colonists of New France and populate the colony. The grammar tense is interesting, but I got used to it.

My Mother Killed Christ: But God Loves Me Anyway by Katie Roberta Stevens
Rating: 5 Stars
This story lives up to the title. It is pure honesty and emotion and will take you on a roller coaster ride. Tears, laughter, then tears again. It's the memoir of a child of a mentally ill mother who believed she killed Jesus. Powerful!

Mystery: An Alex Delaware Novel by Jonathan Kellerman
Rating: 5 Stars
The latest adventure of Dr. Alex Delaware and LAPD Lt. Milo Sturgis is riveting and fast-paced. And I couldn't guess the killer(s)!

Sean from Ohio
Fool by Christopher Moore
Rating: 4 Stars
Christopher Moore has deftly crafted a Shakespearian comedy with his usual sense of humor, and it's really funny. The main character, Pocket, is a sarcastic, horny, and somewhat altruistic hero who can hold his own with any of Moore's previous leads. Simply put, he is hilarious. The book sometimes was bogged down by the vast number of nefarious nobles but it was still very good. Once again, this screams to a Comedy Central animated show! Make it happen!

Jadie
Bossypants by Tina Fey
Rating: 5 Stars
The funniest book I've ever read. And there's plenty of food for thought here too. In fact, I'm planning to read it again, just to really focus on what she had to say. Thanks, Tina!

All the Colors of Darkness by Peter Robinson
Rating: 3 Stars
This is not one of the better books in this series featuring Yorkshire detective Alan Banks.

Debbie
Black Swan by Chris Knopf
Rating: 2 Stars
This is my first endeavor into the world of Sam Acquillo, the fifth novel in a series centered in the Hamptons. This novel skirts from the Hamptons and has Sam and Amanda battling the elements on a sailboat journey from Maine to the Hamptons. Knopf spends over half the novel detailing all the nautical adventures, a little too much for this land lover. The characters are well described, as well as the current weather conditions. The weather and the sailboat reign as the main characters. Then the detour into the workings of software programming and of the software developers ruined any pleasure that this novel might have elicited. The weak attempt of Anika to seduce Sam unfolds like a Harlequin romance. This is not a series to garner my attention.

Constance
The Irresistible Inheritance of Wilberforce by Paul Torday
Rating: 3 Stars
The reader meets Wilberforce, a young British widower, already at the end of his life due to a severe wine addiction that is quickly killing him. The novel is told in reverse from the end of Wilberforce's life to the beginnings of his addiction. This makes it a bit depressing to read since there are so many times you want to root for him. But you're never given the chance to hope Wilberforce can beat his addiction since you know where his story ends up. Although you know where the story is going, it is interesting enough to see how his loneliness and desire to belong lead him to such a path of destruction.

Springwater Seasons by Linda Lael Miller

Springwater is a small town in Montana that sprang up around a stagecoach station. In the first story, Rachel is the new schoolteacher and is saved by Trey when the stagecoach flounders in the creek. In the second story, Savannah is Trey's partner in the saloon and fears that the townsfolk will think she is a loose woman. The third story is about Miranda, a young women who showed up on the doorstep of the station and is cared for by June-bug and Jacob, the operators of the station. The final story is about Jessica, who arrives to help her brother operate the town's newspaper.

Tanya
Shanghai Girls by Lisa See
Rating: 4 Stars
This is the story of sisters, May and Pearl, who are born in Shanghai. Their father arranges marriages for them to Americans who want Chinese brides. The time period is from 1937 to 1957. The sequel, DREAMS OF JOY, is being released this year and I recommend reading this one first to really know the characters.

The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly
Rating: 5 Stars
I loved this book, and I'm always amazed that Connelly never runs out of steam and never produces a bad book. Lisa Trammel is accused of murdering a banker who was about to foreclose on her house. Lincoln Lawyer, Mickey Haller, takes on the case. Much of this book is one of the best courtroom dramas that I've ever read. The author would have to be well-versed in the law to make it so realistic.

The Unlikely Spy by Daniel Silva
Rating: 4 Stars
Alfred Vickery is a college professor who has been recruited for the intelligence service during World War II. His job is to turn German spies into English spies and have them report erroneous facts back to Berlin. One spy who hasn't been turned is Catherine Blake. Her job is to find out how England is going to carry out their invasion of the French coast. Can Alfred's group find her before she finds out the facts and relates them to Berlin? A good book.

Joan
Night Road by Kristin Hannah
Rating: 4 Stars
A story about high school friends, a twin brother and sister and a long-term foster child who is placed with an elderly family member for her high school years. The twins' mother is over-involved in their lives --- in fact, I now really understand the term "helicopter mother." This should make an interesting discussion for a book club. Something horrible happens about two-thirds of the way into the story --- I will say no more! The story ends implausibly I think, but I was mesmerized by the characters and their stories.

The Shadow of Your Smile by Mary Higgins Clark

Coming Back: A Sharon McCone Mystery by Marcia Muller
Rating: 4 Stars
After Sharon McCone had been shot in the head, she spent quite a while in the hospital and now was going to rehab. At rehab, she met another patient named Piper Quinn. When Piper failed to show up for rehab for several days, Sharon was concerned and went to her house. Piper appeared to be drugged but a woman identified as Piper's aunt told Sharon that Piper was okay. Sharon went back the next day and the apartment was cleaned out as if no one had ever lived there. What happened? Who was the woman? A good book.

Two Brothers: The Lawman and The Gunslinger by Linda Lael Miller
Rating: 4 Stars
During an Indian raid, Mattie gave birth to twin boys. After their birth, she found out that her husband had been killed. Since the birth was hard, she did not survive and her babies were given to two families on the wagon train to raise. One family went to California and the other went to Oregon. Now the boys are in their thirties and were unaware that they were twins. That is, until one showed up at the marshall's office. The marshall (Shay McQuillan) was one of the twins. The other twin (Tristan Saint-Laurent) was a former gunslinger. Both men later married and settled down in the small town of Prominence, California. A good read.

Rating: 4 Stars
Years after the Rand scientific expedition disappeared in the Amazon a former Special Forces soldier emerges near death but the strange thing is he had a missing arm and now he has regenerated that arm. A team of scientists vie with a dangerous band of criminals for the pharmaceutical secrets of the jungle. Heart-pounding!!

One of the most inspiring books I've read in a long time. This true story of a real hero appeals to all ages and genders.

The Narcissism Epidemic by Jean M. Twenge and W. Keith Campbell
Rating: 5 Stars
Narcissism is on the rise in the U.S. and there are studies to prove it.
Twenge and Campbell have written a compelling book about narcissism and its effects on our country. They offer some suggestions for limiting and perhaps turning this trend around.

Anatomy of a Disappearance by Hisham Matar
Rating: 4 Stars
In ANATOMY OF A DISAPPEARANCE, Hisham Matar has done a remarkable job in describing what happens to a family when a loved one disappears. When Kamal el-Alfi disappears in Geneva, his son Nuri is left with his new step-mother Mona and many unanswered questions about how his father disappeared and why. Kamal el-Alfi is a wealthy political dissident living in Cairo and a political exile from his country. His disappearence would seem to be politically motivated, but there is never any concrete information and the circumstances of his disappearance are shrouded in mystery. Nuri grows up, but, without the closure that would be the result of knowing if his father is alive or dead, he is unable to move forward with his life. This is a powerfully written book that addresses a subject not often encountered in fiction.

Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult
Rating: 5 Stars
I love all her books, but she dealt with the subject in this book in such a great way that I think it's her best yet!

Beyond the Darkness by Leonard D. Hilley II
Rating: 5 Stars
Another great read from Leonard D. Hilley II. This author has a way with words: they come to life on the page. This story continues three years after the characters escape Pittsburgh. Everyone has moved on and started living life again. Everyone except Daniel. He knows this isn't over. The next morning he gets a call from Lucas saying he's in jail for murder. Everyone knows Lucas is a dare devil but he would never murder anyone. Daniels fears are coming true...

In PREDATORS OF DARKNESS you meet Lucas' clone, Lucian. He doesn't seem like a bad guy to me. He's like a child. He just wants someone to love him. He's tired of the way Idris treats him. I kind of felt sorry for him in this book. When he tries to get close to someone they always turn on him. I think he wants to be good he just needs someone on his side.

I feel like I know the characters. When they set off in the story and you're following them you have the urge to yell at the book to let them know that something bad is about to happen. Ugh, I was so nervous I bit all my finger nails off.

This is an amazing series, and we need to spread the word. As long as Leonard keeps writing, I will keep reading what he puts out there!

The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly
Rating: 5 Stars
If you like legal thrillers/mysteries, this is a winner! After seeing the movie version of THE LINCOLN LAWYER (which I really enjoyed), I picked this up and am loving it! I think it's one of Michael Connelly's best. By the way, according to the book cover, GQ magazine rated Connelly "the best mystery writer in the world." I believe it!

Louise
Cordelia Underwood or the Marvelous Beginnings... by Van Reid
Rating: 5 Stars
Very unique and refreshing. The stories take place in Maine during the month of July, 1896. I say stories-plural because there are counter tales going on at the same time, which also have some connection with each other.

Mr. Reid certainly knows his history, and he will charm you and cause you to feel like you're living at that time yourself.

It was such a delight to read (no sex or bad language a plus) that I want to get the next two in the series.

LouBabe
Operation Husband by Barbara Bretton
Rating: 5 Stars
This was a quick and easy read (I needed a break from the heavier stuff). Martina and Trask had a wild love affair ten years earlier, and then Trask just disappeared. When he came back into Martina's life, she was already engaged to another man.

Debbie
Under the Mercy Trees by Heather Newton
Rating: 3 Stars
This book reminded me of William Faulkner's THE SOUND AND THE FURY. It's a character-driven novel, but I did not like the way the author jumped around from first person to third person in the narrative. Newton writes a Southern novel seeped in quirky and vindictive characters within the setting of decay: the home place and the school.

The story opens with the disappearance of Leon, one of five children born to a poor sharecropper/farmer in the 1920-1930's. At the end of novel, the reader is still unsure what has happened to Leon. One of the main characters, Martin, is homosexual. This is not developed nor explained well. Many of the characters lack dimension, and the reader is unsure of the author's direction in the story. Maybe the author needed to limit the characters and concentrate on fewer members of the Owenby family.

A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin
Rating: 5 Stars
This is quite a long novel, about 1200 pages, but I'm completely engrossed in it. This is the third book of a five book series titled Fire and Ice. If you enjoy reading about knights mixed with fantasy and magic, this is the book for you.

I was attracted to this book by the cover and the title. However, I couldn't make myself finish it; the language was so objectionable.

Rating: 2 Stars
I don't like reading about stupid women. March Cooper is stupid. Most of the other characters are neurotic. Tarot, the horse, I liked.

Harvest Moon by Robyn Carr
Rating: 5 Stars
Robyn Carr continues the popular Virgin River series with HARVEST MOON. An escape to Virgin River leads to healing and happiness for the town's newest couple. A touching and emotional novel about taking a chance on love. This latest book is sure to please!

Barbara B
The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff
Rating: 5 Stars
I loved this book, which parallels two stories --- the 1875 story of Ann Eliza Young, one of the wives of Brigham Young, who fights to dissolve polygamy; and a present day mystery that takes place in a polygamy compound.

Joan
Emily and Einstein by Linda Francis Lee
Rating: 3 Stars
This story might be considered karma-based. A young husband dies on his way to join his wife for dinner. He returns as something other than human --- if I tell you the whys and wherefores, it would ruin the story for you, so I won't! But justice is served, unpleasant characters receive justice, and I had a good time reading about it!

The Reading Group by Elizabeth Noble
Rating: 3 Stars
Great story about a women's reading group in England.

Luanne O.
Home to Woefield by Susan Juby
Rating: 5 Stars
Juby is a very funny woman. It takes a lot for me to laugh out loud while reading, but Prudence's forays into Home Depot, and a disastrous attempt at sheep shearing and many other scenes had me laughing out loud at work --- prompting more than one read aloud session to my co workers.

Four diverse personalities band together to save the farm and in the process save themselves. HOME TO WOEFIELD is a hilarious, heartwarming, heartbreaking, heartfelt heck of a read. I was going at breakneck pace and had to put the book down and save the final 50 pages. I just didn't want it to end.

Play Dead by Harlan Coben
Rating: 4 Stars
Harlan Coben's first book, PLAY DEAD, had been out of print. It's reissued in paperback now.

A gorgeous model marries a Boston Celtics basketball player who disappears and is supposedly found dead. But something's going on that's fishy-fishy.

And so the reader is taken for a ride as everyone seems suspect of something.

Coben prefaces this book with a plea for readers who haven't read his other, later books: please don't read this one first.

So I was all set to dislike PLAY DEAD. But I didn't. It kept me up reading until late at night, and that's a good book, I think. If you like Coben's books, you will this one, too. Don't be put off by his preface.

The Moment by Douglas Kennedy
Rating: 3 Stars
This is a review of an Advanced Reader's Copy of THE MOMENT, which I received from Shelf Awareness. It is due out in May, although I believe I also saw it advertised for later in April.

In THE MOMENT by Douglas Kennedy, a divorced man, a writer living alone in a cottage, receives a package in the mail. He doesn't immediately open it but does recognize the name of the sender. It's from Petra, someone he knew many years ago, back in the 1980s when he was 25 and living in Germany.

He kept a notebook during that time. And now he takes it out to read BEFORE he opens the package. (That was just the first unbelievable incident in this book).

So now we go back to the 1980s. After being scared off by a girlfriend in New York who wants to get married, Thomas Nesbitt plans to write a book about life in Germany.

THE MOMENT is full of interesting details about life in East and West Germany before and after the wall came down. But it seemed that Kennedy got carried away with inserting detail. So I had a hard time for the first 150 pages figuring out what this book was about.

I gave the book three stars because the first half deserves two, and the second half deserves four. If I were the editor of THE MOMENT, I would say this book could easily be half its present length. Cut, cut, cut.

The Kids Are All Right: A Memoir by Liz Welch et al
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a different sort of memoir in that it's written by a family of siblings. Their father dies in an auto accident and soon after their mother finds she has cancer. After a long illness she dies and the kids are scattered to various friends and relatives. How they adjust --- or not --- and eventually make it out okay are the gist of the book. I like the fact that they played the hands they were dealt and, for the most part, put one foot in front of the other and just moved ahead.

The Distant Hours by Kate Morton
Rating: 3 Stars
THE DISTANT HOURS by Kate Morton first introduces us to Edith. Edith is an editor who gets stuck having to, needing to, or wanting to unravel various mysteries throughout the book. All of them in one way or the other have to do with "the sisters Blythe" and their author father.

There are three "sisters Blythe:" two twins and their much younger half sister. We meet them first in 1940s England, during World War II. They live in a castle with their father. And we get snippets of their lives in both flashbacks and the 1990s as the story progresses. In this way, we learn more and more about each of them and the castle's hold on them.

The Blythe family is strange. But Morton tells their story well so well that by the second half of the book, I didn't want to put it down.

But I had to get through the first half first. It was all interesting and told me what I really did need to know about the Blythe family history. But I could have done with fewer details.

The second half, though, is outstanding. I'm very glad I stuck with it.

In the Arms of Stone Angels by Jordan Dane
Rating: 5 Stars
This suspense story is extremely good. I was a little tired of reading and had to almost force myself to start this, but before long, I couldn't stand to put it down. It's billed as a YA novel, but I'm a great-grandmother and enjoyed it every bit as much as the young people will.

Jordan Dane, please keep writing!

The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf
Rating: 4 Stars
Calli Clark is a sweet, gentle seven-year-old child who has a form of selective mutism. Callie has not spoken a word since witnessing a tragedy as a toddler, but communicates with others through her best friend Petra. When Callie and Petra turn up missing one morning from their homes, their families go on a desperate search to find and bring the girls home. At times chilling and full of suspense, the reader is taken on a journey with each family and is given a glimpse of their lives leading up to the girls' disappearance. A well written debut novel and I will be looking for more from this author!

Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo
Rating: 4 Stars
I love this series. They are murder mysteries with the main character being a female Chief of Police named Kate Burkholder. The book is fast-paced with lots of twists and turns. This is the first in the series with number 3 coming out on 6/21 --- it is called BREAKING SILENCE.

Lori B.
Vampire Mine by Kerrelyn Sparks
Rating: 4 Stars
I loved this story! This was my first read by this author and I will be reading more of her books. This story tells of love and trust and healing. Connor is a vampire who has become hardened to regret in his life. It isn't until he comes upon a dying woman that he finds he is an angel. The characters are very likeable and the story was a very smooth read.

The Lost Dogs by Jim Gorant
Rating: 4 Stars
Excellent, fast read about the dogs recovered at Michael Vick's dogfighting operation. It is quite graphic at times, but as a dog-lover, I was happy to read a happy ending about a horrific case of animal cruelty. My favorite part is telling people when they see the book that I'd never heard of Michael Vick before I heard about the court case and I wish I'd never heard about him period.

Fall of Giants by Ken Follett
Rating: 4 Stars
This is not quite PILLARS OF THE EARTH, but Giants has a good story line with interesting characters. In typical Follett style, he has a couple of strong women characters and some odious male counterparts. I look forward to Books 2 and 3 of this series.

Hester: The Missing Years of The Scarlet Letter by Paula Reed
Rating: 3 Stars
3.5 stars on this modern day sequel to the THE SCARLET LETTER. Ever wonder what happened to Hester Prynne and her daughter? The author gives us her take on one of the most read Classics of all time.

The Troubled Man by Henning Mankell
Rating: 5 Stars
The ending of this book leaves no doubt that this is the last book about Swedish policeman, Kurt Wallander. He gets unofficially involved in the disappearance in Stockholm of Hakan von Enke and his wife Louise. This couple are the future in-laws of Wallander's daughter. He soon is deeply involved in a probable spy scandal and it does not look good for the missing pair.

This is a great series, and Mankell always leaves the reader with a satisfied feeling by wrapping up all the loose ends of the plot. I loved it.

Prey by Michael Crichton
Rating: 4 Stars
I always feel smarter after reading Michael Crichton's work. Maybe that's more of a statement about me but I like to think it applies more to Crichton's ability to deftly weave high tech science into a horror story. That's what this book really is. It also plays well as a family drama for a large part of the book. The protagonist, Jack, at times seemed too flawless but overall he was likeable. I would recommend this book if you don't have problems with techno-babble!

Imperfect Endings by Zoe FitzGerald Carter
Rating: 5 Stars
Carter has written a beautiful and poignant memoir of her mother's desire to end her life after years of suffering from Parkinson's disease as well as other maladies. The three sisters have differing ideas of their mother's decision and the implications on their lives; their marriages and their outlooks are addressed beautifully. A decision to die affects all around the patient in ways one would not notice immediately. There is much to discuss from this heart-felt memoir.

Birthmarked by Caragh O'Brien
Rating: 5 Stars
Great book! Interesting story idea, variety of characters and fast-paced plot. In a future society, many things are dictated and there is a definite class distinction that is similar to the Hunger Games trilogy. The characters were well developed and I could really feel their struggles and understand their motivations. I also liked that the heroine was brave and fierce when necessary without being brittle or losing her compassion. I would recommend this book and am looking forward to the second in the series!

Hell's Corner by David Baldacci
Rating: 5 Stars
Excellent book: fast paced and so full of action and suprises I didn't want to put it down! I liked the well-developed characters and the suspense of never knowing who was good or bad---and discovering that some of the characters were both. This book kept me guessing until the end! I would definitely recommend it.

The Insider by Reece Hirsch

Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff
Rating: 2 Stars
I was really disappoined in this biography. I was looking forward to reading it based on all the great reviews it received. It just came across to me as a hard read with a lot of very technical information about the Ptolemy family that seemed very confusing. Would not recommend this -- a better choice would be CLEOPATRA'S DAUGHTER by Michelle Moran.

London Bridges by James Patterson
Rating: 3 Stars
Even with all the violence and killing, I enjoy reading a Patterson novel. I am amazed at the wickedness of the villains. In this novel, two mean men, the Weasel and the Wolf, have teamed together in a run to control the world. Wolf is the mastermind and no one knows his true identity. Hef asks for billions of dollars and release of certain political prisoners in return for not destroying four major world cities. Alex Cross is now working with the FBI and he travels the world in an attempt to stop these vile men. The action is fast paced, a characteristic of Patterson's novels. I have decided that I do not like the first person narrative of Alex Cross. I do not want to know all his personal thoughts and feelings.

A Child al Confino by Eric Lamet
Rating: 4 Stars
The story of a family who fled to Italy to escape the holocaust. The memoir discusses the childhood of "Enrico" and how he handles daily life under Mussolini. An interesting account of how different southern Italy's "camps" were as to compared to Germany's. Highly recommended.

A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin

The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe
Rating: 4 Stars
An interesting portrayal of the Salem Witch trials. The main character, Connie, is a graduate student who comes across evidence of Deliverance Dane while clearing out her grandmother's home. An interesting perspective on the history of the witch trials, however the book itself dragged a bit in places. A good edit may have been able to shave off 50 pages or so and tighten up this potentially good story.

The Blessings of the Animals by Katrina Kittle
Rating: 5 Stars
I am half-way through this book and I never want it to end. Veterinarian Cami Anderson has hit a rough patch. Stymied by her recent divorce, she wonders if there are secret ingredients to a happy, long-lasting marriage or if the entire institution is outdated and obsolete. But as she struggles to come to terms with her own doubts amid this chaotic circus of relationships, Cami finds strange comfort in an unexpected confidant: an angry, unpredictable horse in her care. Get this book!!

Debbie
Murder on Lenox Hill by Victoria Thompson
Rating: 3 Stars
The story begins with Sarah determining that a 17-year old girl is pregnant. The mystery rests in how this could have happened, as the girl is "simple-minded" and always under the scrutiny of her parents. The mystery leads to the minister of the local church as even Frank Malloy assists Sarah in her search for the father of the baby. Frank is still investigating the death of Sarah's husband, Tom Brandt. Frank's search leads him to the new field of psychology and Dr. Freud, as Dr. Brandt was studying four women diagnosed with hysteria. The medical discussion in the book is interesting when compared to what is known today. I feel that the characters could have been better developed, and missed the meddling hands of Mrs. Ellsworth.

Phyllis
The Ale Boy's Feast by Jeffrey Overstreet
Rating: 4 Stars
Reading THE ALE BOY'S FEAST was like delving into a world full of magical characters (many) and landscapes. It is full of mystery and complex conflicts. Overstreet involves you in the quest to find the perfect, safe world for the Abascar survivors. A story of hope and redemption, readers may find their own interpretations in the allegories presented.

A Long and Happy Life by Reynolds Price
Rating: 4 Stars
I regret not knowing about Mr. Price until his recent death. Now I want to read ALL his books! This is, I believe, his first novel....so beautifully written, the reader feels the emotions of his characters. Rosacoke thinks she is in love with Wesley, but really doesn't understand love, and that he gives her nothing in return. Her thoughts and dreams fill the book, along with her family's struggles, and sorrows. It is a wonderful Southern novel.

Rita P.
Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels by Ree Drummond
Rating: 4 Stars
I usually don't read romance novels, but this is a true story about how a couple met, dated and married. She has a way of telling a story that kept me interested. I actually finished the book and really liked it.
She describes some rough times and some lovely, happy ones. Her life has not been all roses, but for the most part, I got the impression she has her feet planted firmly on the ground. I hope she writes another book.

Rating: 5 Stars
This is a spy thriller featuring Milo Weaver as a "tourist" for the CIA. He has been inactive for a while, so he has to prove he is ready to be committed to espionage. The first assignments go well; but his next assignment is to kill a 15-year-old girl.

Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay
Rating: 5 Stars
After having this book on my "to read" shelf, I finally grabbed it off the shelf and now do not want to put it down. I was aware of the Vel' d'Hiv, and as a result of this book, plan on doing research. I love a book that makes me want to get on the computer to learn more about some aspect of the material.

Murder on Marble Row by Victoria Thompson
Rating: 3 Stars
Teddy Roosevelt selects Frank Malloy to investigate and solve the death of a wealthy New Yorker. A bomb detonated in his office kills the man, Gregory Van Dyke. Of course, Sarah Brandt must assist Malloy since Sarah knows the families and can ask questions that he cannot ask. Malloy is also investigating the murder of Sarah's husband, Tom Brandt. Malloy believes that Sarah's father, Felix Decker, is responsible for Tom Brandt's death. Thompson shows the confines of society, especially for women. As usual, Thompson throws in many historic episodes such as anarchist Emma Goldman, the use of bombs, medical advances, and the plight of the poor.

Mr. Chartwell by Rebecca Hunt
Rating: 1 Stars
Just finished the book and although it had some wonderful paragraphs it is hard to believe a dog is going to rent a room in a house! Oh well, to each his own. The dialogue about Winston Churchill wasn't bad but still find the dog idea pretty fake!

UltraViolet by Nancy Bush

I wasn't crazy about this series of three books, although after I discovered that I'd read them in the wrong order, they became more enjoyable.

Jane Kelly is like a knock-off Stephanie Plum but just not quite as much fun.

Edge by Jeffery Deaver
Rating: 3 Stars
Corte is an officer with a federal agency who acts as a "shepherd" in protecting individuals who are the subject of "lifters" or hits. In this case, Corte and his associates believe that the hit is to be on Ryan Kessler, a DC policeman, so his family is moved to a safe house. When other facts emerge, Corte is not sure who the lifter is trying to get. Although a good book, I did not feel it was as good as Deaver's other books.

Tick Tock by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge
Rating: 5 Stars
As Michael Bennett is torn away from his seaside vacation, he is tasked with finding a vicious killer. It takes the help of FBI agent Emily Parker to see that the crimes are copycats of previous crimes. Who is behind these and why? A good book from James Patterson as always.

The Mark of the Assassin by Daniel Silva
Rating: 5 Stars
When flight 002 is shot down over Long Island, the Sword of Gaza claimed responsibility. In retaliation, the US destroyed several of their training sites. Michael Osbourne, agent with the CIA, does not believe the Sword of Gaza was responsible. His wife, Elizabeth, is a prominent attorney and has been approached by a friend, who is a reporter and asks her to search corporate files for a tie-in between one of the law firm's partners and a wealthy industrialist. The reporter also feels that there is a connection between these two men and the White House. Elizabeth refuses, but then her friend is murdered. As Michael searches for answers, he comes up with an assassin who killed a former friend right in front of his eyes. A great book.

The Murderer's Daughters by Randy Susan Meyers
Rating: 4 Stars

The Fall of the House of Zeus by Curtis Wilkie
Rating: 5 Stars
Living on the Gulf Coast and having seen some of these people locally and on the news, I found this book very interesting. There is a lot of legal information that may slow you down a little bit, but this is a worthwhile book. You will learn more than you may want to about the law, lawyers, judges, and the government. These people are fascinating, but it is sad to see what goes on behind the scenes and how people with great potential can fall victim to their own success. This is a book that I know I will re-read in the future.

Abuse of Power by Nancy Taylor Rosenberg
Rating: 5 Stars
I do not understand why there is police corruption in our world. It is always hard for me to believe. This book is very good, based on a female police officer who has gotten caught in the middle of police corruption. How is the female police officer going to cope with the corruption of her fellow police officers in their department?

The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry
Rating: 5 Stars
One of the best fiction books I have read in a while! This novel perfectly combines mystery, psychology, the mystical and the power of human relationships with the right amount of detail to the New England setting. For most of the novel, you will be trying to piece together the truth (you're never really sure whose story to believe). And once you think you've finally got it figured out, Barry throws in a huge and unexpected twist! I loved reading this book and I was sad when I finished. The ending kept me thinking and questioning everything I had just read!

I didn't know anything about this book before starting it and I think that was the best way to read it, so I don't want to give too much information. But I am highly recommending this book to anyone who loves a good mystery!

The Dry Grass of August by Anna Jean Mayhew
Rating: 5 Stars
This book certainly lived up to all the hype I had heard before I read it. It was a terrific read! Segregation in the south is the topic, and an ugly time it was--not just in the south either. A family takes a summer vacation to Florida, and we see the ensuing tragedy through the eyes of 13 year old Jubie. I devoured this book in two days.

Skywriting by Jane Pauley
Rating: 2 Stars
Jane Pauley writes about her years of growing up with mood swings. She was later diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. She claims she got it from hives. I also have Bipolar Disorder and like her, I was diagnosed later in life. Her mood swings were described accurately, but I question that hives caused a mental illness. The book disappointed me. I am going to hear Jane speak next weekend, and I'll see what she says then.

Golda by Elinor Burkett
Rating: 3 Stars
Golda Meir was the first female head of state in the Western world. She was also one of the most influential women in modern history. This biography tells us of her demeanor, how she was admired or not by various people in the government, what she was best at, and how she became head of state. It is an eye-opening and interesting story. It makes me wonder how much more successful she would have been with a better education and a slighly different personality.

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton
Rating: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful book. It starts out in 1913, with a four-year old girl waiting on a ship in Australia, heading for England. When a woman she is waiting for never arrives, the girl ends up in England all alone. She is raised by a couple and only learns that she is adopted at age twenty-one. Each chapter in the book represents a different time period in this young girl's life. Eventually, part of the story is told by her granddaughter, who sets out to solve the mystery of her grandmother, Nell's, early childhood.

Though I found many parts of this mystery predictable, it was still worth reading. I look forward to more of Ms. Morton's work

Rating: 4 Stars
In New York city in the 1940's, amongst the well-to-do, live a bunch of characters who are so caught up in their own meshuga that they can't get out of their own way. One is distressed over his daughter's bad marriages and illicit affairs, another over his inability to commit to his wife or either one of his mistresses, and another so distraught that he dies of grief. Very long, yet very enlightening book about Jewish customs and eccentricities.

Rating: 4 Stars

The Drinking Den by Emile Zola
Rating: 5 Stars
It is hard to imagine a Paris filled with so much poverty and so much pain. Bu the two go hand in hand as Gervaise falls prey to man after man until she has nothing of nothing. The title is oh so appropriate as Gervaise, Coupeau, and a band wagon of others succumb to their vices of drinking...sad and depressing. Long winded and at times funny, I was glad to have finally reached the end.

The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
Rating: 4 Stars
Young brothers Prosper and Bo are on the run in Venice, having escaped their aunt Esther who intends to separate them. Esther hires Victor, a private investigator, to find them. Soon Victor finds himself in the middle of a complex plot involving orphans, mysterious counts, and a certain Thief Lord with secrets of his own. Though the fantasy element was an interesting treatment of classic Bradbury, it came out of nowhere and left me a little cold. If the story leading up to that part hadn't been so thoroughly within the realm of Realistic Fiction it would not have been quite so jarring. That said, it was still a fun little tale with likable characters, and I am still a little bit in love with Scipio.

Fall of Giants by Ken Follett
Rating: 4 Stars
This is an epic novel and the first of three. It covers 1914-1924 and tells of the lives of several families: Welsh, American British, German and Russian. A tremendous book in size and breath, it fictionalizes WWI and the Russian Revolution. It's better than any history book and worth reading if only for the historical perspective.

The Dry Grass of August by Anna Jean Mayhew

Loved the book. Jubie, a thirteen year old girl living in Charlotte NC during 1954, takes a trip with her family and their black maid, Mary, to the deep south where segregation was even more severe. Jubie really loves Mary, who has been more of a mother than her own, and feels terrible about the way she is treated.

Damage by John Lescroart
Rating: 5 Stars
Ro Curtlee, the son of a wealthy and influential family in San Francisco, gets an early release from prison due to a technicality, pushed by his parents. Shortly after, a reign of terror breaks out against those responsible for convicting him. Is Ro Curtlee responsible for doing this? A lot of the evidence points to him. Hmm?

Blood Vines by Erica Sandler
Rating: 3 Stars
This is kind of a weird story about an unspeakable crime. Detective Daniel Reed was the last person to speak to Patsy, and what he reveals to Alex is shocking. Twenty-five years ealier, Patsy was married to Harlan Sommer, one of Sonoma County's most prominent vinterners (wine maker) when their infant son disappeared without a trace. The loss destroyed the Sommers' marriage, causing Patsy to leave and take Alex with her. I found this story a little unbelievable.

31 Hours by Masha Hamilton
Rating: 5 Stars
Haunting story of a homegrown terrorist, and his thirty-one hour countdown to carry out his mission in New York City. He has alienated himself from his parents and girlfriend. They are looking for him everywhere, thinking he is a missing person. He trained for his mission in Pakistan. His preparation, including his interaction with his mentor in the final hours, is very intense and believable. Frightening to think this could happen in the United States. Along the way, we meet other people who could become collateral damage if his mission is accomplished.

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
Rating: 5 Stars
It's a heartfelt, beautifully written book about the Vietnam War. The author says it's a work of fiction and yet the dedication and names used tells me there is some truth in the stories. I usually have a pile of books to read next and yet I'm wanting to savor every word of this book.

Freckles
Around the Next Corner by Elizabeth Wrenn
Rating: 5 Stars
This felt like a "middle age" coming of age novel. Any mother who has lost themselves in the art of caring for others will relate to this little gem! Deena Munger changes her life when she decides to take on raising a seeing eye puppy for the K-9 Eyes for the Blind program. Well fleshed out characters and a good storyline keep the pages turning!

Savanna Blues by Mary Kay Andrews

Fun and fast to read. It's entertaining and does make you wonder "who done it?" right until the end.

Pacific Glory by P. T. Deutermann
Rating: 5 Stars
One of the best books I have ever read about WW2 in the South Pacific. It covers three different sea battles and is heart-rending. A novel, but with such great descriptions it really gives meaning to the words "the greatest generation." Well written and very personal. I read it twice.

Carol
Closer than Blood by Gregg Olsen
Rating: 5 Stars
I had never read Olsen before - - but I'll be searching out his books now. This thriller was on a par with Lee Child, Harlan Coben and T. Jefferson Parker. Great story with twists and turns all the way.

The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe
Rating: 4 Stars
Very engrossing, entertaining read, and an original perspective on the Salem witch trials. Nice integration of story elements set in 1991 and the distant past.

The Perils of Paella by Nancy Fairbanks

This was an easy read, but I don't think it's as good as her first in the series.

The Cream Puff Murders by Joann Fluke

Pretty good mystery and the recipes keep the saliva running! And I don't even like to bake very often.

The Barbary Pirates by William Dietrich
Rating: 5 Stars
This proved to be an interesting Ethan Gage adventure into the Barbary coast. The story was a good one and I was surprised to learn that a lot of it was based on fact!

the Black Cat by Martha Grimes
Rating: 4 Stars
What a mixup of black cats. And just how smart can they be? There's the solution to the whodunit. As always, Richard Jury has conflicting emotions (all romantic of course) concerning the various women in his life.

Sharon

Well written, good plot twists, and Jury finds another love interest. Which will he choose? And how will Grimes get him out of this conundrum?

The Divine Circle of Ladies Tipping the Scales by Dolores Stewart Riccio
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the seventh in a series of Divine Circle of Ladies books. Wonderful group of women who are Wiccans and get involved in crimefighting and solving it too, usually with some magic involved, these are people you would love to hang out with. I never read series books until I found the first book: CIRCLE OF FIVE. I love every page. Every character is likable and colorful in their own way, including their pets. The whole setting in Plymouth MA is perfect, right down to the wines they enjoy and recipes they share.

Rating: 4 Stars
A fun read, with witches and vampires and demons oh my!

The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a unique book. It is not a novel with a distinct beginning, middle and end. It is a series of character studies that will probably remind you of at least a few people you know or have known. All the characters are tied together because they all work for a Roman newspaper. Each chapter (character study) ends with a little twist. One actually made me gasp. The book provides great points for discussion.

Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann
Rating: 5 Stars
I almost put this book down after only reading a couple of dozen pages but I am so glad I didn't. McCann's writing is often poetic and his characters are not likely to leave you for a long time. I heartily recommend this book.

Rating: 5 Stars
Captivating, philosophical and humorous at the same time. Excellent translation by Alison Anderson.

Invisible Mountain by Carolina de Robertis
Rating: 4 Stars
A family saga that takes place in Uruguay. I especially liked Salome's story, and her mother Eva's. Salome becomes a revolutionary during Castro times, but not in Cuba. Eva also has an interesting life as a poetess.

Lie After Lie by Lara Bricker
Rating: 5 Stars
Don't start this one if you're busy - I couldn't put it down! It's supposed to be a true story. Bricker is an artful storyteller.

Peggy
Spiral by Paul McEuen
Rating: 4 Stars
Debut novel about biological warfare starting with WWII and working forward into modern times. Based on real information about the Japanese use of such agents, this is a taut mystery story about what would happen if an American had this doomsday weapon, and how someone wants it badly enough to kill. Not the first book to deal with this issue but definitely entertaining, with interesting characters.
