Janet Evanovich can read any of her Stephanie Plum books to me. I can only imagine what fun she has writing them. Hearing them from the author would make us both laugh, cry, guess at the ending, etc. I couldn't think of a better way to enjoy the crazy world of Stephanie Plum.

I would love to have Ann B. Ross read her Miss Julia series to me. If you love to read about Southern women, this series is delightful. The books contain good story lines with a lot of humor woven in. She also has included "words of wisdom" that I remember my Mother saying. There are six books in the series, and they all are very good.

I usually avoid "read by the author" audio books --- because they write doesn't mean they can read! I think that reading aloud should be left to professionals like actors or trained speakers.

If I were to have an author read aloud to me, I would want it to be Garrison Keillor. I love to listen to him read poetry on NPR each morning on "Writer's Almanac." I also subscribe to his daily newsletter and always "imagine" his voice reading the poem to me.

I just would like to hear Robert Redford read anything. I love his voice, and his voice-over in A River Runs Through It is one of the most moving narrations. I even love the airplane commercials he does. I would love to hear him read anything.

Many years ago, I was privileged to attend a reading by John Irving of several chapters from his unfinished book, A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY. As everyone recalls, Owen, in the novel, has a very distinctive voice. Mr. Irving explained that he planned to use italics to differentiate Owen's voice from the other characters. That evening, in a typical college auditorium at the University of Houston, Mr. Irving became Owen Meany, speaking his words in a voice both abrasive and plaintive, poignant and heartbreaking. As I read the novel much later, after it was published, it was incredible to discover that Owen was speaking in my head with the voice that Mr. Irving had given him. Hearing John Irving read from any of his most wonderful books would always be a privilege.

I just finished GIRLS OF TENDER AGE and would love to have Mary Ann Tirone Smith read it to me. I loved her wit even under the most tragic circumstances. Her story was riveting. I laughed out loud and wept while reading the account of her growing up poor in such a dysfunctional family and then the tragic murder of her classmate. I am recommending this book to just about everybody I know.

I recently read DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME: Culinary Catastrophes from the World's Greatest Chefs, edited by Kimberly Witherspoon and Andrew Friedman (Bloomsbury), which begs to be read by Friedman. I learned about and got the book because he recounted some of the true stories in it on NPR, and I laughed out loud, which continued when I read the book itself. It's an overlooked gem by the audiobook publishers.

My favorite author is Anne Rivers Siddons, a Southern lady who can write about anything and create a great story. I'd love to hear her read THE COLONY, the story of a wealthy family's summer conclave in Maine and the young wife who didn't "belong" there. This is my favorite Siddons book, the first of many that I've read, the one that introduced me to this fine author.
