Do you generally choose books by author or by genre?

[email protected]
When I find an author I like, I will read everything by her or him (Hilary Mantel, Anthony Trollope -- that held me for a while, Anthony Bourdain). But when I'm out of material, I will at times resort to genre... usually, if I'm reading for fun, mysteries, new fiction, sometimes the better historical fiction.

I choose books first by an author and then by genre.

Both and also word of mouth and book reviews.  There are a lot of authors out there that need to be read.

I normally pick a book by the author, but sometimes I will read a review about a book and then read the book.
Thanks.

Authors would be first, new books to find out if I like the author. Genre not much because I read a lot of genres. I keep everything I read .I'm going to read the Travis McGee series in order this summer.

By author first, then by genre.

I chose by author mostly,  but also a good story.

I pick a book first by author, then if there is nothing new out there, I go for genre.

Definitely by author.  I try never to miss a book written by Barbara Kingsolver, Alice Walker, Anne Tyler, Rosamunde Pilcher, Maya Angelou, Amy Tan, Sue Miller, Toni Morrison. . .do see a pattern here?  I do read other authors but strictly by genre--relationships between women friends, mothers and daughters, and wives and husbands.  A friend recently recommended a series of books--written by Joan Hess--about a book store owner who solves mysteries.  But, honestly, I haven't had the time!

I generally chose books by genre - which follows that I tend to read many books by the same author.

Right now I'm in a mood to catch up on my favorites that have yet to be read, but I also like to keep track of their new books coming out, so I'd have to say I choose by author.  It's only when I'm in the mood for something new that I'd go by genre.

I usually chose books on the fiction paperback bestseller list in our Sunday paper.

I pick my main reads by genre.  I like to get several author's versions of mysteries, romance, bios, and classics. But then again, it is also fun to read an author for the first time, and really want to check out their other books.  I have run into some really great books this way!  Good question!!

I do both.

[email protected]
I usually buy or read books by both the author or genre. I read such a wide variety of books that it is impossible for me not to do both.

[email protected]
I usually sort of binge read.  I find an author that sparks something like the subject or the theme or the other works by the author and fly from there.  I have huge lists of unread books and when i can't figure out anything else on my own I go to the list and pick something.  I may or may not finish it, but I do work in a bookstore so the choices are seemingly endless.

Normally I purchase books by my favorite authors.

Genre

[email protected]
I want to read true crime and mysteries (fiction) I choose fiction usually by author but I don't care who writes true crime although my favorites are Ann Rule and Jack  Olsen. In fiction I have many favorites and I wouldn't buy a book by someone I had never read. I wait and check it out from the library.

I choose books by the author - I get suggestions in Bookaccino.

genre then author

[email protected]
Normally select by genre first, I am a big fantasy fan...so that's my first stop in the book store. When I get to that genre then I go for author.

[email protected]
I always pick a new book by author.  Even when I'm exploring a new subject I will look for known authors first.

[email protected]
I used to buy only books from my "favorite" authors.  But they couldn't keep up with me!  Now I buy according to genre.  Always looking for that new "favorite".

[email protected]
I choose by both. Of course, I have favorite authors that I will read everything they write and can hardly stand the wait between publications.  I also really like it when I read a book by an author unknown to me and find the book so enjoyable that I can add another author to my growing list of favorites.

As a rule, I generally choose by favorite author first, followed by subject matter. So many good authors and books to read out there it's hard to know where to start!!!  Happy reading everyone!!!!!

I choose books to read by authors.  I have a whole slew of favorite authors.

When reading mysteries, I usually select those books by author.

Author

I tend to search for books by genre, but usually end up purchasing a book within a desired category by a favorite author.  Old habits are hard to break......perhaps I should add this to my list of new year resolutions,  "Expand my reading list of authors, or break away from lists altogether!"

I pick all my books by author.

I usually pick books by genre, though good reads by a specific author would entice me to read their other works.

I usually follow certain of my favorite authors, and will read anything by these - such as Stephen King, Joy Fielding, Leslie Glass -- many, many others - I keep a list.  I also read other books that look interesting - on line you can often find, attached to information relating to a book or author you've read, other books that might appeal to you - I have followed up on these oftentimes with good results - sometimes finding new authors to follow - a really lucky thing to happen is to discover an author that already has released a number of books, so you can read four or five in a row, liking them all - this happened to me with Leslie Glass.

Eighty percent of the books that I buy are due to the genre.

[email protected]
I would have to say I generally choose books by author.  If I enjoy the language and emotion of a writer, I definitely want to come back for more.  So, for me, it doesn't matter the time or place.

[email protected]
I generally read books written by my favorite authors.  Only occasionally do I try someone new and usually someone has recommended that book to me.  I keep all the books I read and have run out of room!  Therefore, I haven't bought any books for awhile.

[email protected]
Moostly I buy books by author....but genres also count most of the time as well.

[email protected]
Actually I choose my books by reading the inside cover or back cover.

[email protected]
I always choose the books I read by authors.  I have my favoites. I check the Authors On The Web "Coming Attractions" site for new releases.  This site has the authors listed by the month their books are released.   I also consider recommendations from friends discovering new authors.  Genre plays no part in my choices.

I choose books first by the author and then by genre.

Apparently, most authors write stories in the same genre.  Sorry, but you know that's true. I do follow authors, though; and I also like to find new ones by reading the remarks about books and authors on bestsellers' lists and brochures, and most importantly Bookreporter.com!

BY AUTHOR.....

Usually by Author

[email protected]
I chose books by both genre and author. Most of my reading falls under the heading of literary fiction or mysteries. Within both categories, I have favorite authors whose new books I read automatically, but I am also open to new authors. I also venture outside of those two categories, reading science fiction, fantasy, the occasional biography, nonfiction, etc. If something interests me, I'll read it, regardless of how it's classified or who wrote it.

[email protected]
Both.  I read biographies and mysteries.  I have favorite authors, and am always on the lookout for new ones.  I have read 3-4 books per week for many years.

[email protected]
I look for books by authors I have enjoyed first; then, I go with friends' recommendations and then reviews.

[email protected]
I pick books and audio books by genre, and author. I also tend to look for new ones that look intersting with online and in print reviews. Favorite genres include books about dogs, adventure, and the natural sciences. Most of them include dogs in one way or another. Recently I read some books by Gary Paulsen. While they were about him, they included his dogs. In Winterdance, he writes about sled dogs he has run with and trained. In My Life in Dog Years, he writes about his special canine friends. So you see, its not just what the book has as a primary theme that determines its genre. Paulsen's books might be called autobiographical, a primary theme,  but without his dogs, there would be no book(s). So are they really about the author's life, or the lives of his dogs, in which case, they would be a canine biography, or an adventure book, making them completely different genres in the catagory of Non Fiction. No wonder Bookstores have no idea where to shelve books these days!

Always go for the author first, then recommendations from friends who like the same kind of reading as I do.

[email protected]
I usually select books by genre.  I shop at Half Price Books and always check the anthology sections of mystery, science fiction, and horror.  The only author whose books I always buy is Stephen King.

[email protected]
I generally chose books by topic, and maybe what I have read about them by critics (Including Book Reporter).

[email protected]
I choose books by author and by genre.

[email protected]
Most often author.  There are so many authors I follow and love that I don't have as much reading time left to try new books as I would like.  After author, I probably go by reviews for choosing books, and then genre.

Choice in books - ALWAYS BY AUTHOR

[email protected]
Actually, it's both, at about a 50/50 breakdown.

[email protected]
I usually choose books by the author.  If I find an author I like, I try to read all the books by that author.
