Books on Screen: September - December 2016

We've made it through the bombast of summer movies and can now look ahead to the many book adaptations that will be hitting the big screen this fall and winter. Let's be honest; summer may be hot temperature-wise, but the cooler months are when movies really heat up.

The season kicks off with the gorgeously filmed adaptation of M. L. Stedman's bestselling THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS, and things only get more interesting from there. Sundance-phenom The Birth of a Nation --- loosely based on William Styron's Pulitzer Prize-winning THE CONFESSIONS OF NAT TURNER, about the slave turned preacher turned insurrectionist --- hits theaters in October, alongside The Girl on the Train, a sexy adaptation of Paula Hawkins' sleek debut thriller.

As the seasons shift from fall to winter, be sure to check out A Monster Calls, based on the YA book of the same name, about a young boy dealing with his mother's terminal illness in darkly creative ways. Harry Potter enthusiasts (who were maybe not quite sated by THE CURSED CHILD) can look forward to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them --- the latest Rowling adaptation --- in mid-November. And film buffs won't want to miss Silence, Martin Scorseses' "passion project" based on the novel by Shûsaku Endô about Jesuit priests who are met with violence in 1970s Japan.
