Khaled Hosseini covers 33 years of turbulence through uprisings in Afghanistan in A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. He follows the lives of two women - Mariam and Laila - and shows how they are affected by war and the customs of Afghanistan. The language is so vivid that one can actually picture in their mind as to what is happening in the story. The emotions that are evoked range from gut-wrenching to heartache to pure joy as the reader sees the intertwining of the lives of these two women in their struggle to survive during these years. At times their story brought me to tears. I highly recommend this book as a "must read." The author makes one feel like they are actually there and living the moments in the lives of Mariam and Laila.

THE KITE RUNNER was an immersion in the culture that was riveting to the end. And I had hoped for a sequel for years.
A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was even more emotionally thought-provoking to our female reading group. We discussed what freedoms most of us take for granted, even our personal freedom to be ourselves. I am looking forward to the new book. I have great expectations of this author!

THE KITE RUNNER was a wonderfully descriptive story of the friendship of two boys. It was sensitive and heart-breaking. Hard to believe this was written by a man. For a debut novel, I wondered how he could ever beat it. Along came A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS with the story of two women and their horrible lives in Afghanistan. How this author was able to understand the thoughts and feelings of the women was just amazing. The second book outdid the first! I loved them both! I have been watching for the release of a third book and am so excited that it is almost here.

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was just as good, but perhaps the bar was set higher because of the success of THE KITE RUNNER and it was harder to live up to my expectations. Both of these books are ones I continue to recommend to friends, and it is obvious that Hosseini is a gifted writer.

THE KITE RUNNER was a tug-at-the-heart read. This is a story of two boys, one the son of the rich father, and one his servant's son. It shows class distinctions, honor and dishonor, the rich and the poor and the acceptance of injustice as a way of life in this culture so much different from our own. If you haven't yet read this book, I suggest doing so.

After reading and loving THE KITE RUNNER, I was hesitant to read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS fearing that it would not be as good as the first. A letdown I have often experienced with a sophomore release. However, the second novel was equally as engaging.

My book club read both of these books a few years ago. We loved THE KITE RUNNER because it was one of the first books to reveal the history of that era and that part of the world in a heart-wrenching novel. We gladly picked Mr. Hosseini's second novel and were not let down. This time, from a female perspective he revealed the brutality of that world and made us cry, profusely. But both of his works gave us hope in the end and I am looking forward to taking that journey of a lifetime with Mr. Hosseini in this new book.

I loved the understanding and exquisite writing about children in the first book, and the expertise he wrote with about women in his second book. My husband, who is normally not a fiction reader, read both of these and loved them. I actually don't know ONE woman who has not read these two books.

It was a wonderful experience to share such a special book with people who either aren't readers or who only read mass-produced popular fiction. I have read and loved both books. I absolutely cannot wait to read AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED. The characters stay with you. THE KITE RUNNER I have read several times. The characters still permeate with me. I was so excited to see high school relatives reading this book as it had so many wonderful issues to discuss. Having been a victim of sexual assault this book opened the door for me to discuss the issue with my teenage son. We had a great discussion and I am thankful for THE KITE RUNNER.
A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was a gift to me from my sons. I loved the main characters redemption, the portrayal of strength amongst adversity. Hosseini handled domestic violence in a way, where I saw the victim as strong not weak. I cried a healthy cry through the book; it was cleansing and I felt strong at the end. Like I said before I cannot wait to read, AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED!

THE KITE RUNNER was a riveting story. This coming-of-age story in Afghanistan was engrossing yet difficult to read when the brutal abuse of Amir's friend took place. But, just like everyone else, I became a Khaled Hosseini fan after reading this book.
I really looked forward to A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and it didn't disappoint. The abuse of the wife was, again, a dark element of the story that seems to be Hosseini's realistic writing style. I found the story line very dark. Hosseini's books are not light fare. This book, like THE KITE RUNNER, left a lasting impression on me.

Our Grace Readers Book Club read both of these books and were fortunate enough to see and hear Mr. Hosseini speak at East Lansing. I know the books are fiction, but they are very believable. I know some of the first one is based on his early life. He has such a wonderfully expressive style that makes one feel like they are almost there going through the same situations. Very moving, very touching, very memorable. Books like that make me want to read non-stop until the end, but also to linger over them to make them last longer.

I enjoyed them both, but especially THE KITE RUNNER which was our book club's choice. As mothers, most of us with sons, we could see and understand the tension between father and son. It also gave us a glimpse of a country about which we knew so little. I can’t wait to read Hosseini's new book.

I read THE KITE RUNNER a few years ago when the movie came out, but before I watched that. I've always enjoyed traveling, especially in foreign countries and since that's more difficult for me now, the next best thing is to read a book by a person who actually knows the country and the people. I liked the book very much since it gave me exactly that kind of view into such a life. Although I can't guess how much of it is true to life, I find that you can't prevent yourself from expressing your upbringing, your roots in many ways that you don't even realize. Therefore, I'm sure the writer could do no less.
The way of life he wrote about is quite different from the one I know but there are still certain feelings we all share: love, fear, aversion (if not to say hate). We all try to find our way in life and reading how others manage helps us manage as well. In many ways this is not a happy book, but it shows that we can all reach a level of acceptance for our lot in life and thus find some peace.

In telling this story Hosseini informs us of how much harm intolerance and religious fanaticism can cause. Again, a beautifully written story about love and sacrifice told against the tumult of Afghanistan's history. This book moved me greatly and should not be missed.

Both books are beautifully set and opened my eyes further to things going on in Afghanistan. I learned more about Afghanistan reading these two books than I have listening to news reports.

Sometimes the violence is hard to bear but you cannot turn away from the story. Upon reflection, it would seem that neither of these covers subjects I would have known much about. The lives of our central characters were foreign to our way of life here in the USA. But Khaled writes so powerfully and passionately it's easy to become swept up in the story as it moves from one place to another through the book. We have often said that we wished Khaled Hosseini had written more and now it seems we will be rewarded with a new read!!

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is one the best novels I have ever read. The writing is excellent, as is the character development. I grew to care deeply about the two main characters, who are two Afghan women together by tragic fate. The novel provides an insight into the atrocities of the Taliban, the extremely conservative culture of Afghanistan, and the very low status of women in this Middle Eastern culture. Afghan women are the victims of a male-dominated society, especially when the Taliban is in power. The novel does a lot to help educate readers in other countries about the culture of the Middle East, particularly Afghanistan, and also provides some interesting history about the government/leadership struggles of the country. I highly recommend this novel!

I enjoyed both books by Hosseini. I had always chosen books that were set in the USA for some reason, usually family sagas and a lot of southern fiction. A coworker offered me THE KITE RUNNER and what a new adventure for me. The story was and still is unforgettable. Those two books broadened my book choices now. To read about other cultures is a wonderful thing and to have it done by Hosseini is an added bonus. Great reads! Looking forward to his next!

I read the amazing book A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS, seen through the eyes of the two women Laila and Mariam. This book covers the cultural treatment of women in Afghanistan with a background of the constant fighting and turmoil over a thirty-three year period. It is so vividly written, that one actually feels that they are there with the two women.

I absolutely loved A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS! My favorite character is Laila. I imagined a beautiful girl who had experienced the ugliest part of life but still triumphed through it all and saw light at the end of the tunnel with the love of her life. I wasn't able to read THE KITE RUNNER, but I did see the movie. My emotions were on a roller coaster during that movie. I felt hate towards Amir when he didn't save his best friend/half-brother Hassan when he was supposed to. I felt the guilt that Amir had in heart when he learned about everything that happened in Kabul after he left, and I felt the love, loyalty, and devotion that Hassan had towards his family.
Both books are definitely memorable and I would recommend them to anyone and everyone. They teach life lessons and morals and allow us to always remember how thankful we should be for what we have because there are those in the world who have nothing but still find happiness in everything.

I read about these countries and people in the magazines and newspapers in the USA, but the author opens a window so I am able to peek in and hear how they think, speak, and feel. I meet the characters, see life through their eyes, feel their pain and endure their unbearable struggles with them. Through this window I see a people so very different and yet so similar to myself. His writings bring me to a place of understanding, empathy, and respect for a people who before were only a headline. Compassion, equality and dignity silently scream out in his writings leaving only questions --- such a brutal existence, such strong people!

I just finished A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and think everyone should read it to gain an understanding of the turmoil and plight of women and children suffering under religious dictatorships. The book was also an excellent "first step" introduction on the current history of Afghanistan. I couldn't put it down.

It is difficult to imagine the hardships that people in other parts of the world suffer. Hosseini has presented his native Afghanistan with a mixture of sadness and love that can only come from one who has lived it. The culture, that seems incredibly harsh to those of us outside of it, is accepted and has been accepted for thousands of years...with no end in sight. I found THE KITE RUNNER to be a truly engrossing story. I was impressed by the author's ability to tell the story of a young man looking back on growing up in Afghanistan and a friendship he shared with his father's servant. He captured the changing, turbulent times in Afghanistan, and its aftermath, as well as the effects the upheaval had on his family and friends. He was able to let the reader feel the story from the eyes of a young boy and from the man looking back on his life.
A Thousand Splendid Suns was an excellent second book by the author. This time Khaled Hosseini told the story of two women trapped in the Afghan culture. It always amazes me when a male author can write a novel from the point of view of women and make you forget that he is not one himself. I loved both books. They were intelligent stories that stayed with you long after the final page.

I read both of these books many years ago. They are great stories but I can't say they are enjoyable stories. The harsh reality of life in Afghan is hard to take. It breaks your heart to read these stories and you don't forget them either. Our book club still brings them up every once in awhile.

They are both great books. It gives you great insight about growing up in a foreign country where there are many difficulties. It’s a survival story with great feeling and sense of friendship. It also relates to immigrants in the US and the adaptation to a new environment. It's a very touching story which I enjoyed to the fullest.

It was six years ago, and I was a senior in high school when I first read THE KITE RUNNER. I remember that if we were under 18 we had to have our parents sign a permission slip form stating that they allowed us to read the new required material. Of course, that permission slip only got us even more intrigued. It was the best thing all of the Senior English teachers could do to make us want to read it. I remember finishing it before it was due; it was thrilling, fast paced and mind consuming. It left me questioning what was right and wrong, and the power of friendship and love. I remember my grandmother ran into my room because she heard me sobbing when I finished it. She had no idea that I was even reading anything; she thought that one of my friends had died. And in a way, one of my friends HAD died. That was the power that Khaled Hosseini had over me while I read THE KITE RUNNER.

I have been looking forward to reading the latest book by Hosseini. His portrayal of Afghanistan, and the city of Kabul where the stories take place, has a long history of occupations and wars with its different ethnic tribes, Islam, economic classes and gender. In A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS he tells the story of Afghani women and the hardships that face them with each regime change. In THE KITE RUNNER we learned about Afghanistan before the Russian’s were there, about two boys, growing up, betrayal and redemption. Both were beautifully written. The author helps us to see the experience of Afghans that most of us know very little.

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS opened my eyes to some of the injustices that occur around the world. It taught me that women can overcome adversity that I never could have imagined. I enjoyed reading about the history of the region where the book was set. I had never thought much about that and the assumptions that I had made were corrected. Overall, while the story is not a "feel-good" book, it is definitely a fabulous read and enjoyable.

I first read THE KITE RUNNER in 2005, for a book club discussion. Recently, I decided to listen to the audio version of this powerful story. Khaled Hosseini does an excellent job reading his own work, and it's wonderful to have a reader who knows exactly how to pronounce the Farsi and Dari words he sprinkles in the novel. Set in Afghanistan and Pakistan in 1975-76, 1981, and August 2001; and in Fremont, California, from 1981 through December 2001, this novel has as its backdrop the tumultuous recent history of Afghanistan --- the overthrow of the monarchy, the invasion of the Soviets, the takeover by the Taliban, and 9/11. Highly recommended. The graphic novel version, illustrated by Fabio Celoni and Mirka Andolfo, doesn't have the depth of the original novel, but would be another good way (besides the audiobook) to introduce this worthwhile book to a reluctant reader.
While Hosseini’s THE KITE RUNNER told a story of Afghanistan from the male perspective, A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is told from the female view, and that may be why I liked it better. I think this book deserved all the hype it got. I found myself eagerly looking forward to my commute, so I could find out what happened next.

Khaled Hosseini is on my top 5 favorite authors. I purchased THE KITE RUNNER and was totally blown away. The story was incredible and heart breaking. I went out and purchased the movie also. Of course it didn't hold up as well as the book, but that is because Hosseini's writing is incredible. He has such heart and passion for the country.
When I saw A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS I was a little tentative as an author's 2nd book after a best seller, never seem to measure up and I could not believe it would compare to THE KITE RUNNER, but boy was I wrong - I think I like A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS a bit better! If there was a fire and I had to grab 3 books off my shelf - these would be the first two! I can't wait for AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED!
