Jerry Seinfeld

This October Jerry Seinfeld takes readers on a wild ride through his candy-filled version of Halloween. James Bennett's illustrations of little Jerry are so entertaining they might make you want to dive into the pictures go trick-or-treating yourself. And everyone will identify with the Seinfeld "rules" of Halloween --- from what constitutes a good costume to what is acceptable as candy. "I never actually grasped the whole Trick or Treat ultimatum," says Jerry. "Giving candy to grateful adorable children or receiving a bag of flaming animal excrement on your doorstep? Is this a choice?"

Jerry Seinfeld Talks About Halloween

Q. What was your first Halloween costume?

JS: I remember my first Halloween wanting very badly to be a devil. I remember making a very big deal about it and my mother finally making me a devil costume for me by hand. In subsequent years I became more sophisticated (image-protection wise) and chose costumes that were not so candid.

Q. Did you have any favorite children's books growing up?

JS: My favorite children's books were The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins by Dr. Seuss and Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson. I loved what that kid could do with that crayon, no wonder he didn't need parents!

Q. How do you manage to recall childhood so vividly?

JS: I find childhood memorable because the colors were so strong and bright. I'm sure if I grew up in Eastern Europe, with it's more muted gray-brown palette, I wouldn't remember a thing.

Q. What was your favorite Halloween candy as a kid?

JS: I couldn't possibly name a favorite Halloween candy. As I child I went through a candy store the way Andre Leon Talley goes through his closet before a party.

Q. Did you ever play a Halloween "trick" or is it always about the "treats"?

JS: I never actually grasped the whole "Trick or Treat" ultimatum. Giving candy to grateful adorable children or receiving a bag of flaming animal excrement on your doorstep? Is this a choice?

Q. Do you like the way that James Bennett made you look as a child?

JS: Jim Bennett did an amazing job. He makes you want to dive into those pictures and live in that world.

Q. Do you have a favorite picture in the book?

JS: My favorite picture in the book is Superman with the winter coat flying off to a chilly rescue.
