Edan Lepucki is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop and a staff writer for The Millions. Her short fiction has been published in McSweeney's and Narrative magazine, among other publications, and she is the founder and director of Writing Workshops Los Angeles. CALIFORNIA is her first novel.

Writer Lady Daniels has decided to take a break from her husband. In response to a Craigslist ad, S arrives, a magnetic young artist who will live in the secluded guest house out back, care for Lady’s toddler, Devin, and keep a watchful eye on her older, teenage son, Seth. S performs her day job beautifully, quickly drawing the entire family into her orbit. But S’s connection to Lady’s older son takes a disturbing turn. The glossy veneer of Lady’s privileged life begins to crack, threatening to expose old secrets that she has been keeping from her family. When their neighbors are poisoned and the couple learns that Frida is pregnant, Cal and Frida venture toward a nearby settlement run by “Spike People,” a collective that has secured its borders with tall metal spikes, in the hope that the group will protect them from pirates that ravage the countryside.
